Chapter 56: Born to be Tall
*****Dedicated to Meee, my new reviewy-peep of DOOM!
Late in the evening, Zim sat in the lounge with a few of the technicians who had just finished their shift and were now off-duty, sipping at a can of Irken soda as he chatted with them.
“So how did you get Tall like that, Zim? Did it just happen?” a green-eyed officer inquired, his collar open and flattened against his shoulders now that he was off-duty.
Zim smiled. “Well, I’d like to think I was born to be Tall.”
They all chuckled, leaning back in their chairs with their snacks and sodas.
“So how come you were never Tall before, then?” a red-eyed Communications Officer asked, quirking one antenna.
Zim laughed. “Well, it’s good to know Red and Purple have staff with brain-meats on board! I guess you’re all too smart for me to lie to you.” Zim smirked, taking another sip of his soda and then setting the can down, relaxing and reclining in his chair. “I do have my own theory, naturally.”
A few of the technicians leaned forward, listening intently.
Zim stretched, then folded his arms behind his head. “I discovered that the planet I was assigned to, Earth, has a lower gravitational pull than Irk. Which meant that with less downward pull on my body, I grew Tall in a very short period of time.”
The officers nodded, fascinated. “And that’s it?”
Zim nodded, stretching his long legs out and propping his feet up on an empty chair. “That’s it, my fellow Irkens. That is my theory.”
“So what are you planning on doing when we get back to Irk?” a green-eyed female officer asked, smiling and straightening her antennae a little.
“I am going to demand that the Control Brain appoint me as the new Tallest.”
There was a collective gasp, and the technicians were silent for a long moment before one of them spoke.
“Demand? How can you force a Control Brain to do something? And besides, Tallest R—I mean, Red and Purple are still a little Taller than you…not much, but enough to affect the Control Brain’s decision.”
Zim just grinned. “I happen to have a plan…an amazing plan. I will become Tallest, my good soldiers. I have worked far too hard for this to let the chance slip by. I will kill Red and Purple if I must.”
A few of the officers nodded, and a purple-eyed Communications Officer shook his head and leaned back in his chair, grinning. “Well, I’ll tell you, it’s good to have you in command, Zim. Snacks beat that boring mess pod food any day.”
There was a general chorus of agreement around the table, and Zim’s antennae stiffened proudly. “It was the least I could do for having so little resistance when I took control…and besides,” he frowned a little, “my grudge is not against any of you.” Zim unfolded his arms and sat up, grinning again. “Things are going to change now. Once I am Tallest, all Irkens working for the good of the Empire are going to be treated much, much better.” He scowled. “The abuse of power has gone far enough.” Zim slammed his fist down on the table. “I say no more! It’s time that the loyal followers were praised and rewarded for their efforts!”
There was a loud cheer from all of the officers in the lounge, and they raised their poop cans in a toast.
“Hail Tallest Zim!”
Zim grinned, rising to his feet and bowing slightly. “And with that, my companions, I must leave you. I have many things to do before we reach our beloved home planet.”
As soon as Zim had left, one of the officers shook his head. “I never thought I’d see the day. But now that I have, I hope his reign lasts a long, long time.”
The other officers agreed, continuing to munch on their snacks.
***********
Zim walked into the Tallests’ elegant quarters, seeing that Dib was sitting at the table with a pair of headphones on, his fingers typing away on his laptop. Zim stretched, walking over to him and sliding his arms around the human from behind, nuzzling his ear. “What are you doing?”
Dib sighed. “I’m going through all of the data ever chronicled in my father’s lab. I need to find out what this thing on top of my head is…I can’t stop worrying about it.”
Zim gently took Dib’s hands. “Come with me.”
**********
Knocking at the door of one of the security guards’ quarters, Zim held Dib’s hand as the human looked at him in puzzlement. The door opened and one of the guards blinked up at Zim, saluting.
“My Tallest?”
Zim grinned. “At ease.” He nodded when the soldier relaxed, lowering his hand. “Do you have an x-ray scanner on board?”
The guard nodded eagerly. “Yes, Sir.”
“Good. I need you to do a scan for me, then.”
“Right away, Sir.” The guard jogged off into his quarters, rummaging through his equipment and then coming back with the scanner.
Zim nodded, taking Dib’s hand and leading him into the guards’ quarters, sitting him down in a chair. “Run it over this spot here.” He indicated the scar on Dib’s head.
The guard saluted and ran the scanner over the top of Dib’s head, his antennae quirking in curiousity.
Zim frowned. “Save the image and transfer it to the view screen in my quarters.” He took Dib’s hand and nodded to the guard. “Thank you.” Zim pulled Dib along, leading him quickly back to the Tallests’ suite, bringing the image up on the view screen.
In the x-ray image of the top of Dib’s head, there was something dark between the plates of Dib’s skull.
Zim frowned. “Enhance.”
Dib’s expression grew even more worried. “What is it?”
Zim scowled. He refused to admit that he didn’t know; therefore, he downloaded the image into the main database, leaning down and kissing Dib softly and walking to the door. “Go to sleep.” He left their quarters, heading towards the deck housing the science labs within The Massive.
