Chapter 55: Homo Sapiens Possibilis.
Kim thought about the display she had seen at the sex museum. The one that prompted her to wonder about the nature of evil. She also thought of the words her Nana said as she looked at the picture of the knife wielding murderess.
“There are many kinds of evil in the world, but sometimes, Kimberly Ann, things are not always what they seem.”
Now, as she listened to her grandmother tell the story behind picture, Kim had to agree. Things were definitely not what they seemed.
Nana continued with her story. Reliving her past in her head before the rapt audience of her family. “The government wanted to cover the whole thing up, but nobody counted on Goatte. My murder trial had barely begun when he published his picture, and Edith's lies...”
Kim Interrupted. “Hold on a second, Nana. I don't get it about the MP dying like that. I've been in lots of fights. I can't even count the number of times I've elbowed a henchman in the gut. Not one of them ever died from it.”
“That's because none of them was already suffering from a ruptured spleen. They found that out in the autopsy, but covered it up. That man would likely have died even if I hadn't hit him. I have to take part of the blame for his death, that's something I've had to live with my entire life, but most of the blame has to fall squarely on the shoulders of Goatte. If he hadn't called them in to arrest me, that man might have been on his way to a hospital, instead of barging through that hotel door.”
“Your trial was a complete sham.”
Every head in the room turned. All eyes fixed on Gemini. He kept speaking. “When I was first forming the WEE, I studied that trial. It was one of the biggest fuckups ever. Public outcry was so intense after the story was published, the government had no choice but to put Randolph Goatte on the witness stand. They would have put Miss Lenderbetter on the stand too, but the judge was able to keep her out of court, citing she was underage. It was still a circus though. The testimony from Goatte was bad enough, but having the other two soldiers confirm it was the final blow.” Gemini struggled to remain calm, but the intensity of his anger showed through. “They locked you up and threw away the key, all because of the government's desperate need to hide the truth! Because one man couldn't handle the fact that you were attracted to women. Because you were gay!”
He stood up from the table, clenching both his real and mechanical fists. His rage could almost be felt by everyone in the room. “It's always the same. It never stops. The hatred, the lies!” He raised his metal fingers to his face. Ripped off his eye patch. “They are all the same. Always hurting what they fear. They did it to you. To me! They'll keep doing it until somebody stops them!”
Betty stood up and grabbed his arm. She was as baffled by his outburst as everyone else in the room. “Sheldon?”
He violently shook her off. Not paying any attention as Shego and Kim jumped up to keep the woman from falling to the floor. “Don't you see? I've dedicated my life to showing them the error of their ways! They call us evil, so I've given them evil! The Worldwide Evil Empire! Once I've taken over the world, they will be forced to recognize us! Forced to accept us! They will be made to pay...”
There was a flash of green light as Shego left Kim to hold onto Betty and jabbed a glowing finger at the ranting man's forehead. The room grew quite as he slumped over the edge of the table, completely unconscious.
Nana shook her head as the tension in the room eased. She looked at her protegee, who was being helped into a chair by Kim. “Are you alright Betty?” Seeing the woman nod, she went on. “Apparently your brother has some issues.”
Betty heaved a heavy sigh. “I'll say. That explains a lot of things. Hell, I didn't even know he was gay until last night!”
Ron chuckled. “He didn't seem to have any militant hetrophile issues last night.”
Kim looked at her newly renewed best friend, puzzled. “Huh?”
Ron shrugged. “When he was fucking me up the ass... Oh! That's right, you weren't here for that were you?”
Kim remembered her own speculation about Ron's sexual orientation. Was it only yesterday morning? It seemed like weeks ago. She also remembered Shego's description of what had sent her fleeing this room last night. Now here he was, talking about getting it up the ass like it was no big. “You know, Ron, I wondered if maybe you didn't play on the other side of the fence. I mean, I know you've always had a thing for women's clothing, but...” She thought about the device that had caused the whole event. “Or was it just because of that lust inducing thing?”
Ron's brow wrinkled. He looked around at all the naked, or nearly naked, people surrounding him. It wasn't like any of them had kept their preferences secret last night. “I think the device just kinda forced our inner selves out into the open. I fooled around a little bit, just experimenting, back in school. A guy can only take so many rejections by most of the girls he knows, before he looks for other outlets, you know? So anyway, I guess I could say I'm kinda bisexual.”
He looked down at the unconscious Gemini. “I knew he was gay ever since that time he kidnapped me. It seemed pretty obvious when he tried to tempt me to his side with a grande sized burrito.” Ron rolled his eyes. “Like, euphemistic much?” He got up from his chair and walked over to where Gemini dropped his eye patch. He picked it up and slid it back over the man's ruined eye socket. “Last night, he looked so horny and confused. And, well, it's not like I'd never done it before, so...”
Nana was as amused and interested by Ron's revelation as the rest of them, but she knew now wasn't the time for it. “Be that as it may, perhaps later would be best to discuss such things? We do have a few more important matters to attend to.”
Joss spoke up. “Yeah. I sure would like to hear the rest of granny's story. Cuz, I ain't sure how it all has anythin' ta do with what all's goin' on right now.”
Nana smiled at her granddaughter. “It does have bearing. What Sheldon said was mostly true. Back then there was no such thing as tolerance. The government's cover up failed, but they put the best face on it they could and threw me in prison. I figured that was it for my life, until the day Sergeant Barkin showed up at my cell door...”
Kim, Ron, Anne, and Shego all exclaimed at the same time. “Barkin!?”
The youthful elderly woman's eyes rolled. “Yes, Barkin. Grandfather of the Steve Barkin you all know. I'll get to all that a bit later.”
She continued speaking of the past. Telling them how she was inducted into Dietrich Hall's project. Her near death at the beginning, the testing, and how, when the testing was over, she found herself in a living hell. She could see glimmers of recognition for Hall's name and her descriptions in the eyes of both Kim, Shego and Ron. thankfully none of them interrupted her story.
“So everyday became the same. Stints in that infernal machine, mixed with equally horrific visits to my cell by Barkin. It seemed to never end. Then one day someone else was shoved into my cell. A man, without whose help, I might never have escaped. General Gideon Stoppable.”
She paused, awaiting the expected outburst. Ron didn't disappoint.
“Wait a minute! My Grampy Gideon helped you escape?”
“Yes, Ronald. He did. And after that he became the best friend I ever had.”
She saw Ron and Kim's eyes meet. Knew they were thinking of the resemblance to their own friendship. She was glad they had reconciled their differences, and wished she had Gideon here to be the steadying force he'd been for her in the past. She really needed that kind of support right now.
Nana finished out the rest of her story. Their confrontation with the villains. Telling of Dietrich's escape, Barkin's loss of memory, and how Gideon set them up with new lives in Middleton. With a heavy sigh, she told them all about what had been done to her inside that machine.
Kim was the first to break the silence that followed. “I'm guessing it's no coincidence, the two most insane genetic scientists in the last hundred years were both named Hall?”
“None. However, they are not actually related.” Nana knew she was about to get to the part that would either make or break her family. “This part of the story comes from Mr. Brotherson's research. I myself had no idea, until yesterday. Amy Hall and her brother, Adolf, were the children of a boy stolen in infancy and raised by Dietrich Hall in South America. From what Big Daddy found out, Dietrich named the boy Cain. Neither Brotherson or myself have any idea what happened there, but we know that, years later, Cain moved to Texas, married, and had twin children. At some time between the two events, Dietrich Hall simply disappeared.”
Yori interrupted. “As fascinating as this is, it does not explain who is trying to kill all of us, or why. How can any of it be related?”
Nana closed her eyes. She wasn't sure she could handle seeing the initial reactions to what she was about to say. “It's related because, with the exception of Wade, Ron and Kyoko we are all genetically related.”
There was nothing but silence. After a few heartbeats, a single voice came to her ears. “Well, Princess. I think your granny has just lost her marbles.”
Nana opened her eyes. The snarky look on Shego's faced matched her comment. She could see everything from disbelief, to speculation, to cautious acceptance on the rest of the faces. “There's no easy way to do this...”
She touched a button on the console. The giant image disappeared. In it's place a diagram was displayed. Nana didn't say a word as she let the family tree she and Brotherson put together do the talking.
Everything was all laid out. Names. Dates. Connections. Nana watched as eyes went to names. Followed the connections. Saw the truth. The noise level in the room went up as exclamations of shock, surprise, and incredulity arose. Questions and accusations were flung at her. Demands for explanations. She was feeling extremely overwhelmed until she saw the door to the room open.
Handel Feeley stepped into the room with his arm around Sara's shoulders. The tiny woman was crying.
The man looked at the people in the room as they slowly became silent. “Mr. Brotherson passed away a few minutes ago.”

In the suite Kim and Anne shared during their time on the island, two women sat on the bed facing each other. Kim and Shego were both wrapped in towels, having just showered. Between them on the bed was a printout of the same family tree they'd seen on the viewing room screen. Both of them were trying to ignore it, and it's implications, as they dried their hair. From the closed bathroom door, they could hear the sound of the shower running.
After Feeley's announcement, Nana told them all they needed time to come to terms with what they'd found out. Then she'd cryptically told them they would all meet again the next morning, at which time she'd tell them the rest.
Shego looked in to Kim's deep green eyes. The exact same color as her own. She forced herself not to think of the obvious explanation for it. “So you and Doofus Boy are best friends again...” She lifted a hand and snapped her fingers. “Just like that? No recriminations? No blubbering in each other's arms? No angst filled scene making? What's up with that?”
Kim tossed the towel she'd been using on her hair to the side and picked up a hair brush from the bedside table. As she went to work on her hair, she shrugged. “When I saw him there today, I just knew. I guess, deep down, I've always known we'd eventually make up. We've been best friends since we were four years old. It's not the first time we've had a falling out, it was just for a little longer than usual this time.”
Shego could see the truth of it written on her face. Kim wasn't the kind of person who gave her affection lightly. She also didn't toss it aside. “So... The two of you gonna start dating again too?”
Kim handed Shego the hair brush. “So not going to happen. I think we've both realized that wasn't what either of us really wanted, or needed, from each other.” She gave Shego an impish grin as she watched the woman work the brush through her extremely long black locks. “We're never going to be lovers. Just friends. Maybe friends with benefits, but nothing more.” Like a striking snake, Kim leaned in and gave Shego a fast peck on the lips. “I know where my heart truly belongs.”
With her lips tingling, Shego stared at the redhead. She felt the same way. There was no denying that any longer. They were made for each other. She glanced down at the sheet of paper. It lay there, looking innocuous between them, but was actually a minefield she knew they'd both have to navigate. “Look Kim. If what your grandmother said is true...”
“Our grandmother.”
Shego trembled. Her hand stopped pulling the brush through her hair. Kim's correction brought it all home for her. The woman who told them of their tangled, incestuous, family tree was grandmother to them both. Through their father. She hadn't ever know who her male parent was before. He'd been a part of her mother's life, she'd left behind and never spoken of. It had been bad enough, realizing Kim was her sister, but then had come an even more oddball twist. Kim was also her cousin. Nana Possible was, through their twin sister mothers, their mutual great grandmother.
Then, to heap even more implausibility on an already huge pile, it turned out Big Daddy Brotherson had been their maternal grandfather. She felt a twinge of grief at the thought. It was nothing like she felt for her murdered brothers, but it was there. She'd barely known the man, and at that, only professionally, but could feel his loss. It did explain why he'd taken the time to learn the intimate details of her life. She could regret that he hadn't lived long enough to tell her the truth himself.
Shego forced her train of thought back on track before she started thinking of the rest of the convoluted family they shared. There were deeper issues to confront. “As I was saying, Princess. We can't help what we feel for each other. It was designed into us by a madman.”
Kim remembered her Nana's description of what had been done to her in the predecessor of DNAmy's Genetic Zipper. Dietrich Hall's notes, which she and Gideon Stoppable found after his escape from Camp Nowhere, outlined how he'd changed her in meticulous detail. Because of something unique in her genetic makeup, she was the only one of his test subjects that didn't die from the process. Once he'd figured out what that factor was, he had planned to use her as a template to create an entire race of what he considered superior humans.
Her Nana had been his success, and his downfall. He'd given a woman who hated and feared him increased strength and agility. The ability to focus her thoughts on a singular goal. Recuperative powers beyond the norm. Shego was right. He was a madman. Mad to have not seen that such a woman would use those very same abilities to stop him.
After she'd done just that, she found out about the rest of the things he'd done. The increased longevity and the ability to pass on her modified genetics to her offspring. Offspring that would apparently almost always be twins. Topping all that with added incentive, an overactive libido. His intention had been for his super humans to breed with each other, combining and enhancing their genetic lines with each subsequent generation. When Nana and Gideon put a stop to his plan, they also, unwittingly, made sure that there would be no other genetic lines to mingle with her own.
Kim's thoughts circled back around to what Shego had said. That one last thing Dietrich Hall had done to ensure his success. The thing that made incest a next to unavoidable side effect. The thing that made her want Shego to be hers. And her mom. And her Nana. And, she made herself face it, pretty much everyone else in her family. Apparently though, as her Nana explained, sexual orientation, something Hall hadn't planned on, played a big part in it too. She could feel it.
She felt drawn to the women she was related to, much more strongly than to the men. That explained why she hadn't been able to resist her female relatives, but had only given the men little more than passing, what she considered normal, sexual thoughts. Explaining why she did consider her father as a potential lover, but wasn't fixated on him. She still wanted him to be the first and only man to sink his cock in her pussy, but the very first one to go there wasn't going to be his, or a man's.
As Shego watched emotions and thoughts play over Kim's face, she felt a pulse of desire stirring between her legs. “Damn it, Possible! You're getting horny again! You know that only makes it worse.”
Kim tried to look apologetic. Failed miserably as lust built within her. “Sorry Shego, it's that vero... Umm... Vero-whatsits...”
“Vomeronasal organ.”
The two young women, distracted by their own thoughts and conversation, hadn't heard the shower shut off or the door to the bathroom open. They looked over at the source of the voice.
Anne stood in the doorway. Like them, she was wearing only a towel. She'd caught a good bit of the conversation and was surprised they somehow managed to keep from acting on their desires for as long as they already had. Their pheromone induced desires. She could feel the chemical messengers being put out by her daughter and niece affecting her too. The lust inducing machine hadn't been solely responsible for last night's orgy.
“Thanks, Mom. I understand the whole what it does thing, but still not getting the how, or why?”
Seizing the opportunity her daughter's question made, Anne crossed the room and sat in the chair near, but not too near, the bed. She didn't trust herself to actually get on the bed with the two of them, not if she wanted to get some of the questions filling her mind answered. Hopefully a good clinical explanation would keep things calm enough, for long enough, for her to ask.
“The vomeronasal organ is a auxiliary olfactory sense organ, located in the nasal cavity of most animals. It contains sensory neurons that detect chemical stimuli, specifically pheromones. Most scientists agree that, in humans, the genes responsible for it's operation are non-functional. As Nana said, Hall turned those genes on. Then he modified her body, and through her, ours, to produce potent sexual pheromones.”
Anne could feel those pheromones working on her as she spoke. “The reason is simple enough. Once we reach puberty, we begin sending out those pheromones. They make us have the desire to mate with others of our species. By that, I mean people who have been genetically altered by Hall. Since there isn't anyone else in the world like us, that means our family.”
Shego shook her head. “I get that. But what I don't get is how that could lead to our nice little fuckup of a family tree. So we are attracted to each other, fine, but what I can't see is how all those opportunities to do it came about.”
Kim nodded her agreement. “Right. It seems to me that coincidence has been stretched beyond any reasonable limit. Take dad for example. Just how likely would it be for him to meet and have sex with twin sisters who were separated at birth? Pretty far fetched, I think.”
Kim's question brought one of Anne's own to the fore. Now seemed to be the best time to ask. “It is unlikely.” She looked directly at Shego. “Shego? There is something I wanted to ask... How is it, you didn't recognize me as your mother's twin?”
Shego stared into her aunt’s blue eyes, just like her mother's. “Trauma.” She picked up the paper in front of her. “Until I was hit over the head with all this, I had no clue.” She tossed the paper back down on the bed. “I assume Kimmie's told you all about the comet thing?” Seeing Anne nod, she went on. “I was only twelve years old when the comet hit. The psychological trauma of my parents' deaths, combined with the unnatural aggravation of my condition, made me block out most everything of my life before. It wasn't until I found out we were related, that I realized I'd blocked out what my mother looked like.”
Sensing the young woman wasn't exactly ready to talk about it, Anne decided to put forth another, related, question. “I take it by unnatural aggravation of your condition, you aren't talking about the green skin or flaming hands?”
Shego nodded. She waved a hand at the general direction of her pelvis. “I wasn't born like this. Well... Not exactly like this. The doctor my mother took me to called it clitoromegaly. In other words, a really big clit. It was his opinion that it was a symptom of intersexuality. In my case, he thought it was due to Chimerism.”
Anne saw Kim frown. She could tell her daughter wasn't following. “Shego is a Chimera. Not in the mythological sense, but the medical one. It explains something I've been wondering about. Chimerism occurs when two zygotes combine in the mother's womb. Instead of becoming twins, they merge and result in one person, with parts from both. I think that, along with making Nana predisposed to having twin offspring, Hall also upped the percentage of twin related disorders.”
While her daughter was busy digesting that bit of information, Anne focused on Shego again. “I'm assuming that the comet did something else?”
Shego sighed. She unfolded the towel from around her body. There wasn't any sense in keeping anything hidden from these people. Her family. Kim had accepted her for what she was. Hopefully, so could her aunt. Lifting herself up on her knees, she turned enough to display her perfectly formed dual genitals to the woman who was the spitting image of her lost mother.
“The comet changed all of us. My best guess was that it tried to make all of us more than what we already were. Better, if you can use the term. Hego, for example, was already a big person, it made him bigger, stronger. Each thing it did was based on some aspect of who or what we already were.” She lifted her semi hard cock, exposing her vagina. “I was almost a man, and not quite a woman. It made me completely both. My clit, instead of just being overly large, became a fully functioning penis. The changes aren't only external. I have one ovary, also functional. Where most women have their other ovary, I have a testicle...”
Kim and Anne both stared. Their already partially aroused state, jumped up higher. It was as if knowing that Shego was capable of impregnating them, made them want her all the more.
Shego paused as her cock lifted higher of it's own accord. She could almost feel the massive amount of pheromones being pumped into the air around her.
“Why are you two looking at me like that?”
