"I see it around me, I see it in everything
I could be so much more than this
I said my goodbyes, this is my sundown
I'm gonna be so much more than this

You'll take your time, but no one cares
No one cares"

Dreams of an Absolution
Chapter 48
Blossom sat uncomfortably in Uka-sensei's classroom, staring at the far wall without seeing anything around her. Her mitts tightly gripped the edge of her desk, her lips twitched every so often when her chest hitched and she began to tremble. Across from her, someone scooted their seat, suddenly, breaking the quiet of the room with a loud screech. She flinched and ground her teeth, eyes growing wider. Faintly, she heard Uka-sensei say something; vaguely she was aware that he was close to her. She could almost feel his claw on her shoulder.
Buttercup would be back soon, then it would be her turn.
Blossom dreaded that moment.
Soon the door would open, Buttercup would return, and it would be her time to go.
She couldn't handle that. She couldn't see her like this.
"Ah you return. Please, take your seat, we've only just begun," Uka-sensei spoke, in a voice not at all how she remembered. Still rough, but with a dark warmness to it, an understanding he hadn't shown before. Buttercup shuffled by Blossom, tilting her head just enough for the red-haired girl to catch a glimpse of her eyes. She'd been crying.
Blossom had known that. She heard every word of it.
Uka-sensei said something about the assignment, then appeared near her, kneeling down next to her. When he spoke, it was in a voice he only saved for her, "Blossom, dear, it's time for your appointment," He frowned when she shook her head. He lowered his voice, so much so that she needed her supersonic hearing just to pick up more than a rumble, "I understand, but you need this. Recall how she helped you before. This is for the best, Dearest," He gently helped her to her feet when she shook her head again.
He let the other students know that he would return and took her hand, leading her out of the room. The hallways were absolutely plastered with Christmas decorations. Wreaths and tinsel and snowflakes and ornaments hung from every possible inch of bare space. The heater was turned up and the PA played a cheerful medley of Christmas favorites throughout the day. Blossom held Uka-sensei's hand tighter and shivered, hugging her middle with her free hand.
"It is for your own well-being, Blossom," Aku explained, tightening his hold on her hand. Blossom shook her head once more and he frowned, "She worries for you, as we all do," he continued.
Blossom shook her head again, visibly shaking when she realized where they'd stopped. She kept her eyes low and her jaw clenched as the door opened and a friendly figure greeted her. Miss Elise knelt down next to her, biting her lip and gently resting her hand on Blossom's cheek.
"Hi, Honey...I've been looking forward to seeing you," she whispered. She thanked Uka-sensei, who stayed a few moments longer, giving her mitt another supportive squeeze, before begrudgingly returning to his classroom. Miss Elise led Blossom into her office without any trouble, making sure she was comfortable on her little couch before joining her.
For the longest time, they didn't say anything. Miss Elise simply hugged Blossom tight, while the little girl refused to take her eyes away from the floor, battling the budding wetness in her eyes and the clenching pain in her stomach.
Blossom choked back a sob when Miss Elise finally spoke, "I was so worried...I'm still so worried, Blossom. What did they do to you? Who hurt you so much? Please tell me...tell me and I'll make everything better, I swear it," she whispered, her voice taking a harsher tone. Her hold on Blossom tightened and she began to hiss, grinding her teeth, "I swear, I'll do whatever it takes, Blossom. You know I will," she promised.
Blossom shook her head and buried her face in her hands. Her mouth stayed clamped shut, her throat swollen until she could barely breathe. She couldn't say it yet. She couldn't dare tell her the truth.
"You don't have to say anything. Just...nod if I understand so far, from what your sisters have told me," Miss Elise began.
Blossom stayed silent.
Miss Elise cleared her throat, taking a moment to kiss Blossom's head before she began, in a low hiss, "You were kidnapped...they aren't sure who was responsible, but I know you must know," Miss Elise laughed softly, "Of course you know, I shouldn't expect any less,"
Blossom remained still.
"Whoever captured you, did something to you...they had some way they planned to control you. Buttercup said it felt like fingers tickling her brain; Bubbles said it was like when your arm falls asleep, except you couldn't control it any more. Does that sound right?" Miss Elise paused, waiting for Blossom to respond. She sighed when the little girl remained quiet, "Your sister, Bunny, they were using the same thing to control her, weren't they?"
At the mention of Bunny's name, Blossom's chest hitched and her hands flew to her mouth. The temperature in the room plummeted around her. Tears began to roll down her cheeks, only to freeze when they reached her chin. Miss Elise continued to hold her, even when the chill bit at her arms, "But, Bunny managed to save you...and the exertion caused her to break down again. She...died protecting you,"
Blossom buried her head in her arms. A small, strangled cry managed to escape from her lips and she began to sob. Miss Elise swallowed the lump in her throat. Her skin began to glow with a dark, green light. She let Blossom slip into her lap and held her while she cried.
"It's not your fault, Blossom. Shh...it's not your fault," she whispered.
Blossom finally spoke, choking out between her sobs, "Yes it is,"

Blossom slowly looked up, swallowing the lump in her throat. Baku tilted his head, offering her a shy smile. He'd walked her home after her evening with Boomer at the library. Now, standing on the porch, he was holding her hand, keeping her from going inside. She lowered her gaze, staring at their hands, his fingers wrapped tightly around her mitt. With a sigh, he pulled her closer and placed a warm kiss on her cheek.
Blossom flinched when his lips touched her skin.
"Do you want me to come by later?" he offered, a hint of hopefulness in his voice. Blossom bit her lip and turned away from him, shuffling toward the door. She stopped when she reached her arm's length, her mitt still held tight in his hand. He opened his mouth to say something else, but she couldn't hear what it was. In a flash of smoke, he was gone, leaving her alone staring at her hand. She turned her eyes up and pushed the door open, slipping inside and pressing the door shut behind her.
It was only a week until Christmas, and the Professor was making preparations for what he promised would be the best party they'd ever had. Blossom kicked out of her shoes and marched through the living room, keeping her eyes low and ignoring the Professor's rapidfire chattering. She could faintly hear Buttercup responding to him from the kitchen.
"Hey," Blossom froze, her eyes widening. She furrowed her brow and swallowed when she felt a soft mitt on her arm. Her sister quickly pulled away, rubbing her hand and digging her foot against the floor, "Sorry," Bubbles whispered.
Blossom shook her head, still refusing to look at her. She turned away when Bubbles tried to get a peek at her face. Blossom shifted her weight back and forth and rubbed her hands together. She flinched when Bubbles touched her arm again.
"I just...I wanted to talk to you. We haven't...not since we got back…" Bubbles whispered, glancing nervously toward the doorway to the dining room. Thankfully, the Professor was preoccupied with making cookies or something like that. She tried to offer Blossom a smile, but it quickly faded when she saw the twitch of her sister's lips. When she felt the surge of energy beneath her skin.
Blossom's breathing picked up, her upper lip twitched again and the temperature in the room began to drop rapidly with each breath she snorted.
"Blossom...I don't blame you. We don't blame you. It's not your fault. I just...wanted to talk about, you know," Bubbles bit her lip and fumbled with her words. With a hopeful whisper, she leaned closer, "I wanted to ask about…"
"No," Blossom hissed, wrapping her arms around her middle. "Just...no," she shook her head and shoved passed Bubbles, storming up the stairs. Her chest was clenching, the corners of her eyes were brimming with icicles. But, her insides felt like they were on fire. The hallway seemed to be nearly glowing when she hurried to her room and shut herself inside. She snatched her Devil Blossom doll and laid down on her bed, hugging it tight against her chest.
She wasn't sure how long she laid like that, but she finally sat up when her door opened and closed. Blossom averted her eyes quickly when she caught sight of her sister's anxious green eyes.
Neither said a word. Buttercup began to shiver and stared in awe as her breath came out in puffs in front of her. The fresh paint in the room was peeling from the ice making its way across the walls. Her ceiling fan had stopped twirling, stuck in place. But, she stayed where she stood. In fact, after summoning her courage, Buttercup walked over to the edge of the bed. She kept her arms crossed and her hands to herself.
She turned to stare at the spot on the floor Blossom had been glaring at.
Finally, she managed to say, "She's just worried,"
"I know,"
Buttercup glanced up at Blossom and licked her lips. She shuffled her feet and returned to staring at that spot on the floor, "So am I,"
"I know,"
Buttercup looked up, catching a glimpse of Blossom glancing at her. Both quickly averted their eyes and the silence resumed. The room continued to get colder.
"Was that," Buttercup started, only to trail off, shivering.
Blossom swallowed and pulled her knees up to her chest. She kept Devil Blossom close and hugged her tight.
Finally, Buttercup spoke again, choosing each word carefully, agonizing over every inch of her question. When it finally came out, it came out desperate, "Was that...the real you?"
For the first time in a long time, Blossom finally looked up, meeting her gaze. Her expression was complex, difficult to read, but Buttercup was sure she could see...regret? And maybe...pride.
"Yes," she breathed. The corners of her lips twitched, her eyes seemed brighter. The room felt warmer, brighter as a swell of energy filled the rose-eyed sister, "It is,"
XxXxX
Maybe today would be different, Miss Elise thought with a mental sigh. It was the last day before Christmas Break, maybe now was the right time to hope for a miracle.
She sat at her desk, dabbing the corners of her eyes and gazing at a photograph on her desk. It was a school photo of Blossom. Before this mess happened, after she'd pulled herself from despair once before. Her smile was warm and her eyes bright. There was a definite pride in her, she was a proud girl who knew she was smart, knew she was powerful, knew she was something special. Miss Elise giggled softly and picked up the photo. She'd had it framed the very day Blossom gave it to her and cherished it ever since.
Of course she was special. She was...the perfect little girl, Miss Elise thought with a shiver. Blossom was the perfect little girl. A beautiful girl, a limitless girl. Someone she'd grown to admire, someone she'd grown to love. How could someone, how could anyone, have hurt her so deeply? How could anything have dealt such a blow to the most amazing, the most powerful girl who had ever lived?
Miss Elise wiped her eyes and jumped from her seat, reaching the door just as she heard Uka-sensei's harsh knock. Even swallowed by sorrow, Blossom couldn't help being beautiful and perfect to behold. Miss Elise dropped to her knees and greeted her favorite girl with a tight hug. She buried her face in her warm hair, and gave her a tight squeeze, one she hoped would let her know that today could be the day. Today could be the day Blossom trusted her with the truth, as she had before.
"Thank you, Uka-sensei," she whispered, smiling and nodding when the monster retreated, staring after Blossom. Miss Elise had to admit, she envied the love in the monster's eyes. Much as she cherished her little girl, she knew she'd never love her the way she loved that monster. And, some part of her knew that she would never love Blossom the way that monster could. Miss Elise wiped her eyes and shut the door, holding her hand as she led her to the couch.
When Blossom sat down, Miss Elise was certain there was something different today. She sat beside her, unspeaking, simply watching her and caressing her little mitt with both hands. There was something brewing inside her, something building up within her. Irena Elise could feel it; she'd known this girl well enough, she'd worshipped her long enough to feel it.
Something was different about Blossom today.
Something was different inside Blossom today.
"Blossom?" she finally managed to ask. Before she could continue, Blossom turned and finally looked her in the eye. There were no tears this time. Somehow, that was more troubling than the sight of the little goddess crying.
"Miss Elise...I...need to tell you everything…" Miss Elise nodded eagerly, slipping from the couch, to her knees, and clutching Blossom's hand in her own. The little girl turned away, lips trembling.
"Anything, Blossom," Miss Elise whispered, kissing her little hand.
"I...failed," she finally whispered. She shook her head when Miss Elise started to speak. Her words caught in her throat, but Blossom bit them back and, with a deep breath, told her everything.
"It was a man named Dick Hardley...a long time ago, he was the Professor's best friend. He used us, to create cheap copies of us. When we tried to confront him, he ate a vial of Chemical X and turned into a monster. We thought he was dead, but...he was just hiding. Somehow, he survived. And somehow he...got some of Bubbles' blood," Blossom licked her lips. Her lips pulled back, revealing a snarl, "From our fight. He got her blood because of me. And he used it to give you your powers,"
Miss Elise's eyes widened. She pulled away from Blossom, slipping back until her back was pressed against the wall. Blossom rose to her feet and marched toward her, her lips trembling, barely holding back the snarl now spread across her face. Her eyes were on fire. She slammed her fist against the wall next to Miss Elise's face and the counsellor's disguise melted.
Sedusa quickly wiped away the tears streaming down her face and grabbed Blossom's hand, kissing it again, "Blossom, I didn't know! I...I told you, I never found out who it was I was working for! I swear to you, I would never have helped him if I'd known...if I'd known he was going to hurt you! I swear it…"
Blossom growled, tears rolling down her cheeks, "How did you not know? He gave you Chemical X! He gave you your power! How did you not know!?"
"I...it was in prison," Sedusa ran her hands through her writhing hair. Her eyes kept darting back and forth, trying to recall exactly how it happened, "I was in prison, and he just...appeared. He didn't tell me who he was, he just told me he could make me more like you! He could...he could bring me closer to you than I could ever get on my own and I had to take it! I had to...had to experience just a fraction of what it was like to be...a goddess," Sedusa's cheeks were flushed bright red. She lowered her head and wept openly.
"I had to...I had to so I could be more like you," she whimpered. "So I could be closer to you. I could never be like my sister, you'd never see me as anything but a villain, but if I could just...just taste even a sip of what it was like to be you, maybe...I could make you see me as something more than just a mortal? More than just...trash,"
Sedusa sighed and turned her eyes up to meet Blossom's. Despite the fury in her little goddess's gaze, she couldn't help blushing and smiling, "I was never religious. We weren't a faithful family, and I never believed in anything...until the day I saw you. When I saw you wrapped in black and tearing the sky apart, I'd never seen anything so beautiful or amazing in my entire life. Blossom, you are my world, my goddess. I would never betray you, I would never hurt you," Sedusa took a deep breath and slowly let it out, taking Blossom's hand in her own again. "I meant every word I said to you. I believe in you, and I will always believe in you. Tell me what he did, and I'll find him. I'll destroy every bit of him, until there's nothing left to bury. I was never faithful to anyone, but I've been faithful to you. I will always be faithful to you, please believe me,"
Blossom's lips quivered and she threw herself in Sedusa's arms, hugging her tight. Sedusa held her goddess and let her cry. Her hand trailed across Blossom's waist, recalling that day, so many months ago, when their partnership began.
XxXxX
"You...dearest Blossom...you are a god, aren't you?"
"I...they said...it was just…" Blossom went rigid as Sedusa slid her long, sharp fingers across her arm. Even weakened as she was, Blossom's wonderful skin was like iron beneath her claws. She was certain that, if she truly wanted to, she could turn on the villainess and destroy her in a heartbeat.
Sedusa slid closer, breathing against Blossom's neck, drinking in the scent of her gorgeous hair, "Where is he? Where is your god now?" she asked in a low whisper. She regretted it, hearing the way Blossom's voice caught in her throat. She could smell the tears budding at the corners of her eyes.
"I haven't...haven't seen him since...since that day...Buttercup...I think she…" Sedusa caressed her arms, nearly crying herself as a tear trickled down Blossom's cheek. She breathed into her hair, shushing the marvelous creature. Could she say something, anything to take away her sorrow?
"There, there...you have to be strong...you see, you may not realize it. But, Blossom...there are some people who believed in you," She chuckled when she heard the little girl start to speak. She shushed the poor girl again, "No...not Powerpuff Blossom...some people believed in...that Blossom," Sedusa pressed her lips against her neck. She couldn't help shivering when she tasted her goddess. This was closer than she'd ever imagined she could be.
"I believe in you...even now...so please, just let me go. No one will ever have to know. I certainly won't tell on you...just let me...disappear…" Sedusa nipped at Blossom's cheek and flicked her tongue across her neck. Taking another deep breath of her hair, she breathed into her ear, "My...Goddesssssss…" she hissed.
Blossom clenched her eyes shut and grit her teeth. Slowly, she turned to face Sedusa. The monster made no attempt to avoid her gaze this time. Blossom bit her lip and glanced back toward the entrance. With a nod, she turned back to Sedusa," I…" Sedusa's breath caught in her throat, "I can't just let you go," Blossom explained with a sigh.
Sedusa started to speak again, but Blossom cut her off, "You mean that? Everything you said? You...still believe in me?" She smiled and blushed when Sedusa nodded eagerly. Blossom cocked her head back and forth, tapping her chin in deep thought. Sedusa couldn't resist grinning. Her goddess was adorable.
"Cut me," she finally said. Sedusa blinked, lowering herself to Blossom's eye level.
"Excuse me?" she asked, holding up one of her claws. Blossom grabbed her wrist and pressed her claws against her belly.
"Cut me across my chest, make it deep and bloody. Then, I'll tell everyone that you beat me because I can't fight. With my bracelet, they'll believe me. Just…" Blossom took a deep breath and sighed, "Don't hold back, make it a good hit. Try to knock me out,"
Sedusa swallowed nervously. Blossom stared back at her. She looked nervous, but at the same time...Sedusa could see the hint of the old Blossom, the powerful Blossom, in her eyes.
"You believe in me?"
"I do…"
"Then do it, and I'll let you go this time. If this is going to work, you can't give me any special treatment. I'll make sure my sisters never catch you, but you have to make sure you rough me up whenever we fight. Don't hold back against me," she insisted. Sedusa couldn't help but be amazed by the intensity in her eyes. With a nod, the villainess reared back and took a swing at Blossom with all her might.
XxXxX
When Blossom calmed down, the two returned to their seat on the couch. Sedusa returned to her disguise as Miss Elise. This time though, it was Blossom asking the questions.
"What all did you steal for him?"
Miss Elise bit her lip and glanced away, trying to recall, "All of the police files relating to...the Rowdyruff Boys, the Devil Jojo incident, the case where the Gangreen Gang got superpowers, and...all of the files relating to you girls. I didn't take the files from April, though. I felt it was none of his business," Miss Elise smiled, though it quickly faded. She sighed and rested her chin in her hands, "So that device I planted in the water treatment center flooded the water supply with nanobots?"
Blossom nodded and Miss Elise sighed, pinching her nose, "I'm such a fool," she muttered, her voice slipping into her natural tone.
"Yeah, you were," Blossom's lips twitched and she let her head drop, "So was I...he almost took control of me. And I just stood there and let him. It's my fault Bunny is dead. If I had just killed him instead of letting him kill time…" Miss Elise slipped her arm around Blossom's waist. The little girl rested her head against her side.
"It's not your fault. Everything is his fault, Blossom,"
"...Maybe you're right," She muttered. Her expression darkened and, once again, Miss Elise felt a swell of power inside the little girl. In fact, she was certain her room was shaking whenever Blossom glared at the wall.
"Maybe…" she hissed through clenched teeth. "But this didn't have to happen," she whispered, fists trembling in her lap. "And I won't let it happen again,"
XxXxX
Blossom stood in the center of Townsville, staring up at the searing red sky. The clouds had all turned black and she was certain she could hear a maddening scream filling the bloody horizon. In the distance, she could see massive shadows growing closer, the ground trembling with every step closer they took. She narrowed her eyes, but a mind-numbing pain suddenly shot through her entire body.
It started at her feet and worked its way up her legs, slipping into her arms and to the tips of her mitts. Her hands flew to her head; she dropped to her knees. Blossom managed to tear her hands away from her head to stare at them. She could see cuts tearing through her skin, burning blood dripping to the ground below.
With a scream, she collapsed on the ground as a surge of energy swelled in her middle. As the shadows fell over Townsville, her scream ended abruptly and the world went black around her.
