Chapter 51
Warning: This chapter contains Maiko
Someone knocked on the door but Katara continued to meditate. She had to ground and center herself before she became like her mother’s friend Nini, the one who froze and turned into a ghost. She was Water Tribe, she moved, she flowed, she adapted. She was a Waterbender; she channeled, she manipulated, she froze, she healed. She destroyed. She was a Bloodbender; she was the puppet master, not the puppet.
“Ty Lee, could you stay with her while I go talk to someone?” Zuko asked tacitly. Katara was meditating and no longer seemed to be in distress.
Ty Lee’s face brightened and she nodded happily knowing he wanted to talk to Mai. She had spent the night with her and knew that Mai had spent most of the night crying. Azula had knocked earlier but Mai refused to open the door. Since Mai was being difficult Azula was hoping she to get a little entertainment out of Zuko; she was called to the bridge before he opened the door.
Ty Lee had been at lunch with Ozai, Azula, Zuko and Katara and she had heard what Zuko had said to Mai yesterday on the way to the Ursa. She was happy to watch Katara and give her cousin time to go and reconcile with her friend. Zuko’s aura was a mix of colors, muddy forest greens and dark blues with a dirty brownish gray quality. All of them signified fear, dishonesty, insecurity, being on guard against something. The only bright color about it was lemon yellow which meant he was struggling to maintain control and afraid of losing it.
Zuko’s aura normally flickered between a broad spectrum of colors but that was the first time all of them were so negative. She hoped his conversation with Mai would improve it.
Zuko knocked on Mai’s door but she didn’t answer. As a member of the royal family he had one of the master keys so he unlocked it and opened it an inch, “Mai. It’s me, Zuko. Can I come in?”
“Fine,” she replied monosyllabically.
Zuko walked in. Mai was sitting in perfect seiza practicing calligraphy in beautiful even strokes. She only did that when she was upset. She set down the brush and folded her hands demurely across her lap.
She bowed, “Prince Zuko, thank you for honoring me with your presence. What do I owe this unexpected visit?”
“I’m sorry,” Zuko sighed sitting on the floor beside her. “I said cruel things to you yesterday and I was out of line.”
She picked up the brush and resumed practicing her strokes. They sat silently as she finished the scroll and put away her supplies. She sat on the bed and motion for Zuko to sit beside her.
“Are you sure?” Zuko asked. Mai believed that a bed only served two purposes - sleeping and sexual contact. He sat on the bed facing her.
Her eyes bore into his, “Zuko tell me the truth, why did you break up with me? Was it because you wanted the Waterbender?”
“No!” he insisted. The question caught him off guard; at the time of their break-up he had no thoughts of Katara.
Mai nodded and bit her lip before shyly asking, “Was it because we haven’t had sex?”
“It was part of it,” Zuko replied honestly. There was a tiny shift in the bed and he knew he had displeased her with what he had just said. “Mai, it’s not for the reason that you think. I mean did want to have sex with you, I still do, but not because I just want to sheathe my dragon on your cavern. You’re my betrothed, but we aren’t fully bonded. I was banished before we consummated our engagement and you haven’t been willing since I came back.”
“I always thought that you were the one person who’d always be by my side. I care about you. Whenever I thought of home, I thought of you. I thought of becoming Fire Lord with you as my Fire Lady. I didn’t think things would be so strange when I returned or that things between us had changed or that we had grown apart in so many ways,” Zuko admitted.
“So you broke up with me because our bond is incomplete? Zuko that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. You don’t break up with someone to fix a bond, you spend more time with them to try and repair it,” Mai huffed.
“I know, but I’ve been so confused lately. I…,” Zuko began then stopped, “Mai, why didn’t you want to have sex with me? Do you not trust me?”
“How can you ask me about trust? You slept with someone else the same day we broke up!” she dodged.
“I know but, that’s beside the point. We were together for almost two months from Ba Sing Se to the invasion. That was plenty of time for you to make our engagement official. Do you not want to marry me?” Zuko asked upset by the prospect of losing his future with her.
“Of course I want to become Fire Lady. How can you ask that?” Mai said quietly.
“I didn’t,” he corrected, “I didn’t ask if you wanted to become Fire Lady. I asked if you wanted to marry me, Zuko, not the recently returned banished crown prince.”
“Zuko, why do you say that like you’re two different people?” she asked wrapping her arms around him. This was the latest of several conversations in which Zuko had tried to separate himself from his title. She could tell by his tone she was losing him. She had to regain his attention.
She scooted closer to him and practically sat in his lap, “That’s part of the reason I was afraid. I didn’t know what the future held for you. You’ve been so confused and volatile since you came back. It’s like I don’t know you anymore. I know you’re upset about your uncle being imprisoned. I wasn’t sure if you’d do something stupid like try to bust him out. I needed to be certain of my future before I took such a big step.”
Zuko laid his head on her shoulder. She didn’t sleep with him for the same reason he broke up with her.
Her long fingers slid under his chin and pulled him into a kiss, “I’m not afraid anymore, Zuko. Let’s consummate our relationship.”
