Dreams of an Absolution
Chapter 45
A tiny voice groaned, straining to be heard above the sound of the waves crashing around her. With what strength she had, Blossom slowly forced her eyes open. She immediately regretted it, closing them again quickly when she caught sight of the sun overhead.
Her head was throbbing. Her entire body felt numb and distant. Where was she? How long had she been out here? She clenched her eyes tighter, praying that she could focus her thoughts. Unfortunately, the churning sea around her, and the frigid, salty breeze kept her distracted.
But, where was she?
Blossom cracked her eyes open and struggled to get a better look at her surroundings. Water, rolling ocean waves as far as she could see. Straining her eyes, though her powers were unbearably weak still, she looked left, then right, but couldn't seem to find a shore in the distance.
"Lost?" she managed to groan, sputtering when salt water rushed into her mouth. She was lost. Somewhere out at sea. How did she get there? Where were her sisters?
Her sisters!
Blossom sucked in a breath of air and called out, "Girls? Bubbles? Buttercup?" as loud as she could. Her voice barely echoed over the ocean. If they were nearby, she doubted they would be, would they even be able to hear her? Blossom sighed and closed her eyes, hoping to block out the searing light of the sun overhead.
What happened?
How long had she been out here?
Where were her sisters?
Her sisters...
Blossom sighed as she slipped under the water. She opened her eyes at last, staring blankly into the sea. She was sinking, but, if she focused, breathing was something she only needed every so often. The water was so cold. It was so dark beneath the surface, and got darker the further she slipped. She hoped that, maybe if she slipped far enough, she'd forget how she got here.
She'd forget how she failed.
She had asked her to save Bunny. It was the one thing they'd asked her. It was the only thing she had to do! She didn't have to stop that monster! She didn't have to destroy the nanobots! She just had to save Bunny! She just...had to...
But she failed.
Bunny was dead, and this time, Blossom knew she was never going to get another chance. She'd asked to stay gone. She'd asked to just sleep forever. Sinking deeper and deeper into the ocean waves, Blossom felt she could understand why. Bunny had lived both of her lives in pain. First, the pain of her sisters' rejection. Then, the pain of death. And now, the pain of being a slave to a madman. She'd earned peace at last.
Peace at last...
She could have saved her, Blossom thought, opening her eyes again. She stared emptily up at the water's surface, watching the light grow thinner with every foot she sank. Blossom could have saved Bunny, if she'd have just been braver. If she'd have been stronger. If she'd have acted quicker. She didn't have to die. Bunny didn't have to die. She didn't have to suffer. Blossom, the real Blossom, had the power to save her.
No...
Save her how?
By the time she found Bunny, the nanobots had wormed their way into her brain. It was all she could do to just walk on her own. How could she have fought something that stole her body from her? How could she outwit an enemy who had stripped her mind away from her?
What power did a demon have to save a life?
Bunny could have survived.
If Aku had interfered back in Townsville, they'd have never been kidnapped.
If Professor Utonium had treated them, he could have deactivated or destroyed the nanobots.
If Ms. Keane had spoken to Bunny, maybe she could have gotten through to her, as she'd gotten through to the older girls so many times.
If Bubbles had gotten free, she could have woken Bunny from Dick's control. She could have prevented the fight that killed her.
If Buttercup had gotten free, she could have defeated Dick. She wouldn't have stood around and waited for him to explain. It was that headstrong determination that could have changed things.
What could Blossom do?
She messed everything up, just like she always had. She couldn't save Bunny. What power did she have to save a life? Every one of her powers was made for taking life. Lightning that could split the ground and tear apart the sky. Fire hotter than any star, able to consume anything in its path. Ice cold enough to freeze Hell itself. And darkness, made to rend, tear, smash, and split flesh and bone. She was the most powerful person in the world. With one hand, she could crush entire planets. She had the strength to tear entire worlds apart. But, when her little sister needed her the most, she was powerless.
Blossom wasn't the heroine, she didn't have the power to save anyone.
She could only destroy.
She could only kill.
How could she know how to save a life, even the only life that ever deserved to be saved?
Blossom clenched her fists and eyes tighter. The water bubbled around her as a trembling pink light surrounded her. Growing with every shake of her body, the light grew until it was visible even in the darkest depths of the ocean. Her horns grew from her skull, her eyes lit up like little fires burning under the water. Her wings, her six writhing tentacles, tore through her dress. Blossom growled, causing the ocean around her to quake with her power.
She threw her head back and screamed, a bloodcurdling scream. Three streams of red light erupted from her eyes and mouth, tearing from the churning ocean's surface and splitting the sky open. Her scream echoed across the horizon until it was drowned by the water collapsing on her.
Blossom's true form faded, and she slipped into unconsciousness once again.

How can I ever face them? I failed...they put their faith in me again, after losing every reason to ever trust me again. And I failed...
It's not your fault! Please, don't blame yourself. You did everything you could...I just know it!
How? How do you know there wasn't more I could do? I should have...I should have been stronger.
You're the strongest person there is. If you couldn't save her, no one could have. Don't blame yourself. Please?
Don't lie to me...you know what I am. I should have been able to do something. I should have been stronger. I should have been smarter. I should have saved her! I...I'm a failure...
No you're not! Stop saying that!
She's right! It's not your fault!
It's not your fault.
It's all my fault...

How long had she been floating along with the current? When Blossom finally came back to the surface, she found that the sun had long since passed over the horizon, and now the dark starry sky was filled with the biggest, brightest moon she'd ever seen. The air had grown chilly, and the smack of the waves crashing even louder with nightfall. Maybe it could have been described as a beautiful night. But, staring up at the pale moonlight, Blossom couldn't find it in her to appreciate it.
She'd have given anything to submerge herself once again; to sink into the frigid darkness below her. But, she feared that if she dared, she'd drift off to sleep again. She wasn't ready to face them again, even in her dreams.
Were they out there, shooting across the ocean waves trying to find her? How far could they be? The ocean was massive...and they had been stuck in their bracelets. Just what had happened to her sisters while she was away? Were they in danger? Were they hurting? Had some great fish come out of the depths and swallowed them whole?
Probably not, she thought with a sigh. The creatures of the sea wouldn't dare attack Buttercup, and likely Bubbles could talk some sense into anything that approached her. And Blossom? They seemed to avoid her entirely. They seemed afraid of her.
She couldn't blame them.
Just how long had it been? Days? Weeks? Months? There was no telling how long they'd been in that base, or how long she'd sat in that room before escaping. It was likely December by now. Winter had surely settled over Townsville.
Townsville...what had become of her home? Had that monster attacked? If he did...he wouldn't be a match for Aku, even in his weakened state. But, would Aku interfere? Likely not...what about the Rowdyruff Boys? She couldn't imagine they'd be worth anything without the girls to lead them. Of course, there was Dexter and Agent Honeydew. And Monkey. If things got bad enough, they could always ask for his help, she supposed. Townsville didn't need her. They got by just fine before the girls were born, and they'd get along just fine if they never came back.
Blossom took a deep breath and blew a snowy breath into the air, watching with unfocused eyes as the snowflakes fluttered through the air above her, just to be devoured by the ocean waves. With a groan, she too slipped beneath the water, sinking into the darkness. As she fell, Blossom stared at the flickering sliver of moonlight that just managed to pierce the surface of the water. As it grew dimmer and further away, she watched as each of the stars surrounding it blinked out, one by one.
Her eyes slipped shut as the moonlight finally faded.

Night had fallen on the city of Townsville. A small figure stood alone in the starlit street, staring up at the sky, watching as one by one, each of the stars went out. A smile slowly spread across her lips; the moonlight grew darker. It was beginning to snow in the middle of Summer.
She lowered her gaze. Her wings stretched to their full length, writhing as their sharp tips cracked like whips. The flames from her eyes burned brighter, casting a bleak fuchsia glow on the war-torn streets. Icicles spread across the buildings, rising up in jagged spikes and careless, violent shapes and sizes. The moon was a lone silver streak across the darkness.
Her fists clenched, her teeth gnashed. The stars were lighting up again, one by one, each casting down a golden stream of light, piercing the darkness spread across the city. They were coming. The blood pooling at her feet ran cold, slowly freezing.
Countless bodies filled the streets. Shattered skulls spilling steaming gray matter into the gutter; split chests holding up pus-pulsing organs to the stars like offering plates. A trail of death and destruction in her wake, and still the stars shined brighter still. Still they dared to cast their warmth on her eternal night.
"Let them come," she sneered. The moon was just a pinprick in the pitch night sky.
She heard footsteps approaching and turned to face them. The intruder stood at the other end of the street. Her eyes were wide, her mouth agape. The dark fuchsia light pulsed brighter still; her eyes narrowed, but she quickly averted them from the intruder's bewildered stare.
It took her too long to find her voice, "You shouldn't be here. I tried to warn you,"
"I know," her voice was low, but still she gazed at her with the same eyes she'd always saved just for her. Though she couldn't bring herself to smile, she didn't turn away. Instead, she came closer, wading through the gathering snow. The storm grew, the icicles spread and more bodies filled the streets. The stars were bright as the sun overhead, but were powerless to pierce the night over Townsville. And yet, she came closer still.
Blossom finally turned to look at her again. Standing strong against the storm, standing bright in the darkness, standing, without buckling, under the weight of her sister's shadow.
"You need to come home," she pleaded, reaching her hand out.
Blossom cast her fiery stare at the offering. Her lips quivered, "You know who I am," she muttered. Her sister nodded, but refused to turn away.
"I do," Still she stood, offering her hand.
Blossom shook her head and turned away, "I'm sorry," she muttered.

She hadn't slept in hours. What if she had another vision, one that Buttercup wandered into again? What if it was Bubbles next time?
She couldn't let them see that side of her, even if they knew it existed. It wasn't time yet. Not so soon after losing Bunny...she couldn't bear the thought of losing either of them. Once they saw what she truly was, they would leave her. They would turn against her. It was one thing to know she was a monster, it was another entirely to see the monster she was.
Blossom took a deep breath and tilted her head, watching the sun rise in the distance.
How much longer would it take them to find her? She was a tiny blip in the middle of the ocean. Her reckless explosion of power hours ago wouldn't be much help. There was no telling how far the current had carried her in that time.
She could fly.
She couldn't bring herself to.
It wouldn't be much longer, she was certain of that. Buttercup seemed desperate enough when they'd last spoken. They had to have been found already. It was only a matter of time until she saw a streak of green or blue light across the sky, and then found herself face to face with her sisters.
Then she'd have to face them, she'd be forced to admit her failure.
Time ticked by like sand through an hourglass, a single grain at a time. Yet, somehow, everything felt frozen to her. Time was moving around her, marching on without her. She was starving and her stomach hurt, but she didn't have an appetite. She was tired, sore, and cold, but couldn't feel the chill any more, and she'd long since stopped feeling any pain.
She felt...she hadn't felt this way in so long. Even when she heard the sound of something in the sky nearby, she continued to stare blankly up at the clouds. She faintly heard a cry, and felt something getting closer still. Blossom let her head roll back.
"It's her! Lower! Lower! I can almost reach-Bubbles get back in your seat! And put your seat belt on! Yes, yes, I know, Honey, but I can-oh! Yes, of course," The Professor's voice called, clearly strained from distress, over the churning sea. Blossom took one last breath of the salty air before accepting his embrace. Her father pulled her out of the water and into a big, fluffy warm towel. The air ship, most likely one of Dexter's inventions, stalled for a second, then began to rise up into the sky.
"Blossom! My God, I was so worried! I thought we'd never find you. Are you alright? You aren't hurt are you? Oh my gosh! You must be hungry! You're freezing, Sweetie! Blossom?" The Professor's panicked cries continued, but Blossom remained silent, keeping her eyes low as she fought her way out of her soaked through clothes into a fresh, dry, warm outfit. Then into a blanket and tucked away in a seat between her sisters.
She glanced up when the Professor knelt down in front of her. She offered him a small smile, "I'm alright, Professor," she lied. He planted a warm kiss on her forehead and returned to his seat, already rambling about how they'd have the biggest, yummiest lunch when they got back to Townsville. Oh! And how Ms. Keane would be excited to know they were all safe. Not to mention her friends and teachers, ahem. He made sure to avoid naming any names, but they all knew who he meant.
Blossom blinked, a hot cup of chocolate suddenly held out to her. She peeked up at Agent Honeydew, offering the tiniest thanks before accepting her mug and giving it a long sip.
She couldn't taste the chocolate.
She couldn't feel the liquid burning her tongue.
She couldn't hear the Professor's overjoyed rambling.
And she still hadn't looked at her sisters.

Author's Note: Sorry this chapter is so disappointing and small. I've had just the worst writer's block. I know all of my ideas, I know the words, I just can't get myself to put them down on the paper. I fought to get this one out, finally, so I hope it was worth the wait. I'll do my best to finish out this part of Dreams of an Absolution as quickly as I can manage. Again, I'm really, really sorry for the delay.
