After putting his nice clothes away and pulling one of his orange furs over his bare body, Fred joins Barney in the kitchen
"What're you hungry for, Barn?"
He asks, trying to figure out what to make for dinner
"Hungry for? Besides you, uhh... I dunno-" Barney jokes, then checks the icebox for ideas
"Is Wilma still on that diet craze, Fred?"
"...yep... I don't know what's going on with her.. I always tell her that she's perfect the way she is- but she never believes a word of it.." Fred sighs
"Gee... sounds like she's having some self-image issues... I've been there, I get it." Barney replies, remembering his similar struggle- his honesty is proven through the sadness that Fred can see while looking in his eyes
"You...? Why, Barn? If I woulda' known, I'd have tried to snap you out of it..."
"That's real sweet of you, Fred."
...
"But it wasn't until high school when all the other guys started gettin' tall. They thought callin' me names like "dwarf" and "munchkin" was funny..."
...
"Sure, I laughed along with 'em but their words got to me after a while."
Barney shrugs, a little nervous to have just let out an insecurity of his
Fred puts his arm around him and squeezes
"That's part of what makes you so frickin' cute... in my opinion, anyhow."
...
"You're a little guy but you're strong as a beast and one helluva smart buddy to have- you've saved my butt more times than I can count... 'cause I ran out of fingers, heh-heh."
Barney chuckles
"Let's see if Wilma will open up to us tonight, ya never know.."
"-but.. we should still prepare her favorite salad in case she accuses us of trying to make her eat like a king... hehehe." Barney adds
"Good idea- see what I mean? You're clever, I like that about you."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fred fries up some pterodactyl nuggets. Barney begins preparing Wilma's favorite salad and then puts 4 beers on the table- one for each of them and their wives.
The wonderful scent of the meat, as it's cooking on the stove, fills the kitchen and brings a homely feeling to the guys.
After he adds tomatoes to the salad, Barney takes a few ears of corn out of the icebox to begin stripping them into a pan of water- adding a spoonful of butter and a sprinkle of black pepper.. He then places it on the stove, beside the meat, to heat up.
The doors on the clock swing open and the cuckoo bird emerges to tell them the time. Cuckoo-ing six times to signify 6 o'clock-
"Six... Wilma will be here before too long, since the stores close at 6:30 on Sundays." Fred comments
"Right'cha, Fred- food will be ready soon." Barney assures him with a smile
...
Fred skewers the pterodactyl nuggets and moves them onto a platter- before moving the corn and pouring it into a serving bowl.
Barney finishes up Wilma's salad and cleans up the stems and seeds that he removed from the veggies
Now, all there is to do is cover up the food to keep it warm until the girls get home.
"aaaaannd- done." Barney calls out and washes his hands before walking into the living room.
"Thank you, Barney boy!"
Fred joins him on the couch to watch television
"Anything good on?"
"Nothing yet, I think there's a fight coming on sometime tonight, though."
"Ooh, let's watch that!"
"Okay, Barn, we'll keep checking back to see if it's started."
Barney cuddles up to Fred as he's surfing through channels
There's almost too many to watch now that the Flintstones got cable TV. The old rabbit ear antennas don't do them justice anymore... since Bedrock has grown significantly- the commotion takes every last dribble of reception- until all that left on their TV screen is static and white noise.
"Good thing ya got cable, Fred."
"Yeeepp, the only bill I appreciate paying. Heh-heh."
Fred flips to a channel and the Happy Housewife show is on
"Hey, Fred?" Barney taps on Fred's shoulder to ask a question
"Yeah?"
"How's come you didn't like Wilma doing this show...? I, uh.... thought she did a pretty good job... good singin' and such."
He folds his hands, hoping that he didn't just comment on a sensitive topic for Fred.
Fred has to think for a moment, as it was a great question. Why was he mad when she found great success? Was it out of selfishness?
All these thoughts run through his brain, which strains itself to figure out why he was mad... at his wife, for earning her own money.
The only legitimate reason that comes to him is: no food on the table, prepared especially for him- ready at the very moment he steps through the threshold.
"I... I've been thinking about that a lot lately, Barn. I shouldn't have acted like a heel back then."
He hangs his head in shame
"Gee, Fred- I know that change can be hard.. especially when you end up stuck with frozen Salisbury steak..."
Barney can't help but joke and cackle uncontrollably at Fred's admission.
The expression on his face is priceless-
Besides...
He knew that it was about food because Fred had then tried to come over to their house for dinner. Betty kicked him out because he was being picky and critical of literally everything..
Although, neither Betty nor Barney held a grudge at Fred for it- he apologized to them both and paid for their groceries as another form of apology.
To ease out of a topic that made Fred sad, Barney pulls him close and kisses him on the cheek.
-and Fred, who remained lost in his thoughts and regrets about being so mean to Wilma......and his best friend's wife- was caught off-guard and a rose-colored tint comes over his cheeks and nose.
"You're not still worryin' about my question, are ya?"
Barney asks, concerned at Fred's trance-like daze and look of worry.
Fred turns towards Barney to look him in the eyes
"I can't even express with words how sorry I am for everything I've ever said and done to you, Betty, or Wilma... I-I feel like I need to make it up to you... but the thought that you should'a disowned me long ago... it haunts me.."
...
"You can be sure of something..." Barney grabs Fred's hands again to show sincerity
"What's that, Barney?"
Fred asks, looking bashful- much like Barney did when he asked the hard questions.
"There's no need to worry, Fred.. no matter what happens, I'll be right here with you.."
"I never wanted to bicker anyways... we both must've had stuff goin' on that stressed us out... but from now on I'm going to be a completely open book... for you, Fred.."
Barney squeezes Fred in a tight hug, his head closely pressed into his side. The warmth brings Fred back into reality, making him stop worrying as he was.
"I think we're gonna be o-kay.."
They look at each other and grin happily, before Fred leans in to give Barney a quick kiss on the lips- to make up for the one earlier.
They watch television, holding hands and laughing at the non-satirical parts of the shows- pointing out the stupidity and poor writing in the scripts..
Waiting patiently for the girls to return..
