Clyde McBride sat at the desk in his dorm room typing away at the final essay of the semester. His teacher had assigned each of them to do an essay on a particular phobia, and given his own parentage he decided Homophobia was the best choice. He was nearly done with it when his phone went off. Recognizing the ringtone he knew it was his dad and sighed massaging the bridge of his nose under his glasses as he reached for the phone answering it. “Dad it’s still two days before semester ends. I promise come Saturday morning I’ll be on my wa-.” He was interrupted by the crying of his father Howard, which only made Clyde sigh more. His father was a bit overdramatic with chronic fainting spells and panic attacks. “I-I-it’s not that-t C-Cl-Clyde it’s, it’s oh I can’t do this! Here Harold!”
There was some shuffling on the other line before his much calmer father answered. “Clyde so we’re not calling you to pester you about when you’re coming home, but something has happened with the Louds.” Clyde sat up straighter. “What happened was it something bad?” He asked waiting for his father to answer him and hoping it wasn’t anything too serious. “Well Clyde you see Mr. and Mrs. Loud were…killedinaplaneaccident!” Harold rushed the last five words out as if he were ripping off a verbal Band-Aid. It took Clyde several seconds to decipher his father’s sentence, but when it did an icy fist slammed into his gut. He released a whoosh of air as he collapsed his whole body numb as millions of thoughts ran through his mind.
How could this happen, I can’t imagine how the girls must be feeling, what’s going to happen to them? Then the biggest question popped into his mind. “How’s Lincoln taking this?” He asked hearing a deep sigh on the other end. “Not well son I know you probably have a lot of work to do, but I was hoping that maybe-.” “I’m packing right now.” Clyde said interrupting his dad already knowing what he was going to say.” On the other end Harold smiled. Clyde’s loyalty never ceased to surprise him. “See you soon son.” Clyde gave a solemn nod before realizing that he was talking to his father on the phone. “Yeah you too dad love you.” He said hanging up and getting back to work on his essay. Clyde spent all night on his essay and was the first one to hand his in before immediately going back to his room to pack and hit the road.
Clyde arrived that night around 11:00 collapsing into his fathers’ arms. “When’s the funeral?” He asked as his dads carried him to his bedroom laying him down Howard even going so far as to tuck him in. “The crash happened last week and well their bodies were never recovered so the family thought it best to go ahead with the proceedings.” Clyde wanted to explode at his dads that they’d know about this for a week and only now just told him, but he was too tired, settling for a tired glare before he dropped into unconsciousness.
Clyde had wanted to wake up early and go see his friend, but he didn’t want to intrude on the family’s grieving besides he knew that Lincoln being the oldest probably had enough on his plate, so he decided to speak with him after the funeral. Since there were no bodies the Louds were having a service at their home. Clyde arrived with his dads seeing him and Lincoln’s friends along with the friends of all his sisters. Even crotchety Mr. Grouse was teary eyed. Clyde made his way into the home seeing the various faces of grief on each of the Loud’s faces. There was Lincoln’s grandfather Albert and his girlfriend Myrtle and surprisingly Aunt Ruth was here without a single cat. He made his way into the kitchen finding Lori, Leni and Luan serving plates of food fake smiles barely holding back the pain they must feel inside. As a Psychologist in training Clyde could pick out a person’s feelings by watching them, but he didn’t need those skills to know his friend’s sisters were in pain. I gotta find Lincoln. He thought making his way out the back giving Leni, Lori, and Luan a small hug and his condolences on his way. He proceeded to the garage turned bedroom and knocked. “Lincoln it’s me Clyde. I’m here for you buddy.” He said grabbing the knob and opening the door.
Lincoln sat on his bed shirtless wearing black slacks and dress shoes. Laid out next to him was a dress shirt and tie. Lincoln looked up at his best friend and smiled sadly his eyes bloodshot and puffy. “Hey Clyde I knew your dads would call you here even though I told them not to.” He said wiping his nose with a rag. Clyde’s eyebrows shot up. “You told them not to call me?” He asked shocked. Wow I owe my dads an apology later. Clyde thought to himself. “Why would you not want me here Lincoln? I’m your best friend and best friends help each other in times like this.” Lincoln blew his nose again before speaking. “You have your own stuff to deal with Clyde Psychology school is tough business you should be using every second to study not worrying about me.”
Lincoln stood up grabbing the shirt and tie slipping them on. “Besides I don’t deserve you as a friend.” He said tucking in his shirt sloppily as he made for the door. “Lincoln you can’t mean that.” Clyde said placing a hand on his friend’s shoulder. “I did this Clyde, I caused this mess with my selfishness and now I’m suffering for it, but no one else should have to suffer for my mistakes. Take my advice Clyde go back to school become a psychologist like you always wanted. Forget about me I’ll be fine.” Lincoln said walking into the house leaving Clyde in the shadow of a cloud.
Clyde lost contact with Lincoln after that not for lack of trying though. Going back to school he’d call Lincoln daily either getting his voicemail or one of his sisters saying Lincoln was “out”. It was a lie and he knew it, but he didn’t stop, but with the growing pressure of school work those Daily calls turned to weekly calls, to every other week, then monthly and finally falling to a couple times a year. Clyde had been working nonstop since that day working himself to the bone trying to finish his degree as soon as possible because if he could finish he would finally have the tools he needed to help Lincoln and his family. Part of him hoped he was doing this for nothing that when he was finally done Lincoln would be his old self or at least a better version than when he last saw him.
Clyde had fallen asleep at his desk his face pressed to the cool plywood before his phone went off. He jumped knocking a book to the floor as he looked around for his phone finding it hidden inside the book that had fallen. Apparently he’d been using his phone as a bookmark. He stared blearily at the number on the screen not recognizing it only knowing that it was a Royal Woods area code. “Hello?” He said groggily rubbing his eyes and turned around to see sunlight streaming between his blinds. “Clyde is that you?” He recognized that voice. “Lori? Is that you?” He asked yawning a little. “Yes it’s me Clyde, sorry if I woke you.” Clyde stood up stretching returning the feeling to his legs. “No worries I should have been up already. What’s going on Lori?”
He heard Lori take a deep breath before speaking. “It’s Lincoln Clyde. I don’t know what to do anymore I’ve tried reaching out to him we all have, but he just stays in that house and writes those disturbing comics. He doesn’t answer the phone, the only person I know who’s had any form of contact with him is Pop-Pop and that’s on rare occasions. I think there’s something wrong with him, well more so than before. I don’t want to say it, hell I don’t even want to think it, but I think he’s going to….!” Clyde nodded knowing what Lori was going to say. “You think he’s going to kill himself.” It was a statement not a question. Lori hitched on the other end. “I can’t lose him too Clyde he’s everything to me.” She said crying loudly.

Clyde sat the phone and went to the sink and splashed some water on his face as he thought this through. He should recommend Lincoln to a doctor, but that’s not what he wanted to do. There was a reason that Clyde was so into Ace Savvy. A normal man who went above and beyond to save people. That inspired Clyde to do the same. Truthfully he wouldn’t have his degree for another year after gaining some work experience, but he’d busted his ass to get this degree in a record time of 4 years. “Lori if you can keep Lincoln stable for another month I promise I will do everything I can to help him, but first tell me everything that’s happened since the funeral.”
He heard a deep inhale before Lori began speaking telling him about how from Lynn down all the sisters were living with Pop-Pop and Myrtle, that she and Leni were sharing an apartment, and that she wasn’t sure where Luan and Luna were staying, but she knew they were ok, and how each she along with Luna, Luna, and Leni had been chased off by Lincoln depression. Clyde sighed scratching his head. “Lincoln blames himself I knew that from our conversation at the funeral, but do you have any idea why?” Clyde asked. Lori’s throat locked up she knew perfectly why Lincoln blamed himself, but could she tell Clyde why.
No one outside, her, Leni, Luna, and Luan knew that Lincoln blamed the fact that he had sex with them the reason for their parents’ death. It was ridiculous of course, but it was the truth. Lori opened her mouth ready to spill her guts to Clyde, but he stopped her. “Sorry I asked you that Lori, of course you don’t know if you did you wouldn’t be calling me for help. Just forget I asked, like I said if you can keep Lincoln stable for a month I will have graduated and be ready to help him, but if you can’t or he seems to be getting worse and attempts the unthinkable I urge you to find a psychologist for him whether I’m there or not.”
Lori exhaled so deep she felt like her soul was flying from her mouth. She was so relieved. “Thank you Clyde! Thank you, thank you so much!” She shouted through her tears. Clyde just smiled. “Don’t worry Lori I’ll get him through this.” Clyde said and after saying their goodbyes he tossed the phone on his bed and looked at his computer. “Alright let’s do this.”
Now
“And now I’m here.” Clyde said sitting across from Lincoln who stared at him blankly. “I’m here to help you Lincoln, and unlike last time you’re not giving me an excuse about school.” He said looking Lincoln squarely in the eye. Much like me Clyde had also went through a growth spurt standing at six foot seven his curly black hair was combed back from his face showing off the fact he no longer wore glasses having either gone through Lasic or he was wearing contacts. I wasn’t sure which. He was wearing some a pair of jeans below a simple RW t-shirt and sneakers. “If you knew what I did you wouldn’t want to help me Clyde.” I said lying out fully on the couch. “Let me be the judge of that Lincoln.” Clyde said sitting forward resting his elbows on his knees. “What could you possible do to make something like this happen, and for that matter who’s punishing you? God?” I snorted at that. “Clyde you know I have a loose grip on religion. Do I believe in god no, but I do believe that the universe has a consciousness and that it balances itself. So more like Karma then god.”
Clyde nodded that would be something Lincoln would say. Underneath his eccentrics he was a man of logic after all Lisa never complained about having to tutor Lincoln. “I see Karma, so what did you do to cause your parent’s death? Did you go out and gun down some couple in an alley, were you drinking and driving and killed a family?” Clyde asked pushing seeing Lincoln grit his teeth. “What did you do Lincoln?!” I looked at Clyde and shot to my feet staring down Clyde angrily. “You really want to know the fucked up thing I did Clyde, hunh?!” Clyde sat back staring at me calmly. “Yes Lincoln I want to know so I can help you.”
I shook my head before looking at him. “You can’t help me Clyde! You know what I did I fucked my sisters!” I shouted at him and like a broken dam I kept going. “I fucked them Clyde every day before I left for college, and I loved every second for it. While I was at college I could do is imagine sticking my cock in Lori’s mouth. I wanted them so bad it hurt and when I came home and found out my parents’ were leaving I was over the moon about it thinking how much sex I was going to have. That’s what I did. The universe punished my perversity by taking my parents, and you know what even now I still want them! So you tell me Clyde can you help me, do you even still want to help me!?” I stood over Clyde staring down into his brown eyes.
Clyde stood up slowly and looked at me before placing his hands on my shoulder. “Of course I’m going to help you Lincoln you’re my friend, I just need some time to come up with something but my phone is always open to you Lincoln if you need to talk I’m here, always.” He gave me hug before heading for the door. “I’ll be back tomorrow, just sit tight buddy help is on the way.” He shut the door and heard him walk off the steps shortly after a car started up and he was gone. I collapsed back onto the couch. “He didn’t hate me.” I was shocked and for the first time in a long time I felt happy.
Clyde drove pulling his cellphone out and calling Lori only to get her voicemail. “Lori it’s me Clyde I’m heading over to your apartment to talk about Lincoln I need you to call Luna, and Luan and have them to come over. I need to talk with all of you if we’re going to help Lincoln.” He hung up before taking a turn to pick up someone he knew would also be instrumental in Lincoln’s mental health. “I might have bitten off more than I can chew.” He said aloud, but then shook his head. “One bite at a time.”
