16 March 1916
Elsa growled in frustration as dust filtered down from over head as as yet another explosion could be heard from above. She wasn't naked this time, nor in her bed chambers, but rather in a dressing gown and her pajamas and in the shelter under the War Ministry. She checked the maps again and growled louder as it was updated with fresh enemy markers. The map of Arendelle showed a scarlet line of battle just to the south of Arendelle City proper.
The French Navy had exploited a distracted Arendelle Navy's gap and landed troops and supplies on the southern edge of Arendelle, and were followed closely by the Russians as well. Even now, a major naval battle was being waged to try and close that gap by German, British, Arendelle, Southern Isles, Russian, and French naval forces.
Thankfully, the Spanish had had to quit the war as a civil war erupted in their own back yard. That didn't change the fact that as yet a fourth front in the war had just opened up. Even though her alliance was numerically superior, the Allies were able to open multiple fronts thanks to geography. Still, Elsa's main concern was the battle raging on her doorstep.
Moana glared at the map in her own night gown as Helga updated the ship positions yet again as still another crash came from above. Thankfully, a fisherman with a telegraph had spotted the incoming ships in time for everyone to get to shelters. As the War Ministry was deep inside the city and the most fortified shelter available, that was where Elsa, Helga, and Moana had been taken. Which was just as well as as soon as the French had come within range, they had begun to shell the royal palace of Arendelle.
Technically, the old castle still counted as a harbor defense, but in reality, the French were making a point more than anything else. Elsa and the rest had lost a lot of their possessions when the castle caught fire. Still, that mattered less than the suffering her people were going through as Arendelle City suffered under the intense shellfire. And it had been going on for three days.
Elsa rubbed her swollen belly and winced as the baby within kicked hard at her kidney. Moana sided up to her and rubbed her shoulders. Elsa smiled at her shorter wife and knew that Moana was doing what she could to comfort her, and Helga joined her and helped out. Both of them were versed enough in Elsa's mannerisms to know how badly stressed she was. Also, the temperature in the small room had just dropped several degrees as Elsa had growled.
Finally, Elsa relaxed and she smiled at her lovers. “Thanks girls. Moana, I can certainly understand why you turned down my offer to sit on the throne in my place. This shit is for the birds.”
“Island Lilly, the throne is your place, not mine, as I told you then, and I am telling you again now. I just wish we could drive the Allied navies from our shores and out of cannon range. A three day naval battle is insane!” Moana breathed, and the little tattoo version of herself nodded from the v-neck line of her gown.
“Elsa, they are going to have to break as it is. Likely within a few hours. They don't have an infinite number of ships to keep up the fight with. I think this engagement was a gamble on their part to try to drive us out of the war. If anything, I think this is going to steel the people's resolve to win the war outright,” Helga shrugged.
“The fact that this all happened in the middle of the night and there hasn't been time to get a change of clothes in three days isn't helping, honestly,” Elsa sighed. “That and we could all use a bath.”
“Heh, just like you to focus on the little things to distract us from the larger worries,” Moana teased.
Suddenly Helga looked up as the telegraph operator cleared his throat. “What, sergeant?”
The sergeant gave a weary smile, “Ma'am, the enemy line is routing back to the south, and the enemy ships are all turning back to the south as well. I think they realized what they got themselves into and are retreating. We didn't even need her highness to pull out the big freeze like we were afraid we would!”
“Thank Te'Fiti for that! Alright, give us the heads up when the all clear goes out,” Elsa sighed as relief flowed through her.
“And let us know if they got that damned fire in the palace contained or if it broke out of the east wing,” Moana growled.
“Yes, Ma'ams! I'll do that thing!” the sergeant saluted and turned back to his telegraph.
Elsa sighed and sat down in the comfortable chair that had been brought in for her specially. All they could do was wait, and that was hard for her. Truth was, everyone was busy fighting to keep Elsa from using her magic at all. The last thing they wanted was for a pregnant Elsa to get herself and the baby killed by stray gunfire or even a shell exploding too close. Which was why they had delayed the “big freeze” as they were dubbing Elsa's ability to freeze over an entire country the size of Arendelle and then some.
An hour went by, then two, until after almost three hours the telegraph operator looked up and smiled in relief. “The enemy are withdrawing back to their landing sites. Enemy naval forces are covering their transports' escape, but otherwise, we won. The enemy are fleeing Arendelle territory.”
“Thank Tangaroa! Now if we can just figure out what they were trying to do here. Unless they were going to get some reinforcements in, they just didn't have what they'd need to take the island away from us. From what I have seen of the battle and action reports, this war is something like a chess game and right now this looks like a rather foolish move for the Allies to make,” Moana mused.
“Very true, Mo. Any word on the palace?” Elsa asked.
The sergeant winced. “The shell fire spread the flames across the palace as they pulled out. The entire palace is gone, your majesty.”
“Damn. Well, no matter. We were meaning to build a new palace in a more secure area of the island anyway, so might as well get started on that while we move into a temporary base. What made the Allies pull out when they did?” Helga asked with a raised eyebrow as she looked at the flags of Arendelle, British, and German ships that were pursuing the enemy ships and trying to drive them from the southern coast.
“Ma'am, Norwegian and Coronan naval forces were coming in from the north east and west. I guess the Frogs saw them coming and decided it was time to pull out and cut their losses,” General Sigurdsdotter suggested as she updated the map with the reinforcements positions.
“Most likely. Just what was their goals though, that is what remains to be found out,” Elsa sighed.
“Ma'ams, I might be able to help with that. Word is just coming in that we captured a number of the Allied troops and even a number of officers. To say nothing of enemy sailors we are plucking from the water,” the communications sergeant offered.
“Well, we'll just have to see what we can get out of them then. Though, I doubt it will be much,” Elsa sighed.
28 March 1916 – Royal Residence(Temporary) of Arendelle
Elsa sighed as Helga went down the list of factories and ship yards that were having to be rebuilt. Since Helga took over as her Chief of Intelligence, Helga had been more in the know about what was going on than Elsa was. Now however, it was just a litany of damages that were going to have to be healed, and worse still, several new construction ships that were shelled in their dry docks were going to have to be repaired before they could be finished, and at least two were complete write-offs.
Helga finished and looked hard at Elsa. “The palace is now nothing more than smoking ruins, Elsa. And despite our interrogations, we have come up with no reasons other than trying to slow us down that the enemy attacked. British and German aid is already coming in to help rebuild, but remember, they have their own issues. Of course, Britain is dealing with the northern front in Normandy, while the Germans have the Western and Eastern Fronts to worry about. And with Japan in the Pacific, we are having a hard time trying to keep them bottled up as they have tried twice now to attack the navy we have out there. With all the commitments to combat, we are just going to likely have to focus on rebuilding the war effort first and foremost.”
“Helga, I wish you were wrong, but that attack did so much damage, we might have to fall behind the others in terms of production schedules, which is not going to help the current shortages we are facing on all four fronts. Mind you, we still have what is coming in from the Pacific Realms, but since Spain lost all their Pacific holdings to Japan, getting shipments from there to here is tricky before they even cross the naval battle lines in the Atlantic,” Moana pointed out with a heavy sigh.
“Indeed. Worse still, I don't like how suspiciously quiet America is being right now,” Helga mused.
“Particularly after the Congo Invasion went off as well as it did and we found evidence of America using Africa as a way to funnel supplies to France and her allies. I just don't like this sullen silence from a country that big with that much war fighting potential. I'd honestly be less concerned if they were blustering about it,” Elsa sighed heavily as she rubbed her swollen belly.
Moana noted her wife's distress and took Elsa's hand in her own. “Elsa, we'll deal with it when it comes. We know full well it isn't 'if' the US comes in, but 'when.' And we have a plan to deal with it.”
“I know, but this just doesn't look good for us right now. It will be months before we are back on track again. The only good news is that that was the only successful operation the enemy has had against the Centrists. We are pushing them back to Paris even now. Without Spain, the Allies are going to lose, but I just wish we hadn't just been gutted like that. The last thing we need right now, is another set back. If it wasn't for Britain and Corona, Germany would be looking at some serious shortages. As it is, our supply lines are strained as it is,” Elsa heaved a heavy sigh.
“Maybe we'll get lucky and the Allies will call it quits before the US gets involved,” Helga suggested hopefully.
“We can hope,” was all Elsa could give at that moment.
Aries was beyond pissed. All his pawns were laying low on orders, as he had suddenly found himself under an inordinate amount of attention. He wouldn't have guessed that there were gods that actually knew that Elsa was part dragon and Jotun. He would have been wrong.
Elsa had been a known element for over a century! He didn't know which gods had conspired to create her, but certainly Odin, Loki, and Freya were being rather tight lipped. And apparently it had been a big secret, because the moment Hel had brought it up, she'd been demanded to explain how she knew and just who else knew it too. And so an inquiry was under way as to how Aries had stumbled upon their dirty little secret instead of them being investigated for creating the gods slaying demigoddess at all! Though, to be fair, there were gods demanding to know who created Elsa and why. They were just being drowned out by the demands on Aries and Hel.
Aries raged about his palace. He should have been moving against the demigods while Elsa was pregnant and incapacitated. Instead he was having to watch his step around them, lest he be seen as “interfering” in matters he shouldn't be. Which would have doubled the suspicion on him, further derailing his plans.
At least one of his agents had managed to convince the French and Russians to launch an attack on Arendelle itself to disrupt it's war fighting capacity, and to rub some salt into the wound by destroying the Royal Palace. Not that Aries had ever thought for a moment that the attack would be anything more than a slight inconvenience to the Centrists, but the petty side of him took great pleasure in blowing the crap out of Elsa's palace and industries.
He was still working to get the Americans in on the war, but it was going to happen sooner than later. At least the other gods understood his need to meddle in a mortal war. Still, the new and vicious weapons like the various gasses and what was looking to soon be air dropped bombs were going to be available to prolong the war once the Americans got in on things. Those Americans could be so inventive. Like their experiments with magic beam weapons. That was something Aries hadn't foreseen coming this early. He'd figured it would be the next war when such fantastical weapons came out.
Still, war was still fought by mortals, so it would be up to the troops and generals to know how to use them. Now if only he could get an agent to play havoc with Elsa while she was having to tend to her growing family...
2 May 1916 – Royal Residence(Temporary) of Arendelle
Elsa screamed as she pushed hard against the coming child. Her water had broken hours ago, and the babies were coming fast and hard. The fact that she was having twins had been a shock to everyone. They'd expected one child, but twins was something the gods had failed to mention. Another scream and then the midwives gave way to a doctor who just arrived.
“Breath, your majesty!” the doctor admonished.
Elsa did the breathing as she had been instructed, and winced as she felt the doctor begin probing at her loins. Moana and Helga squeezed her hands in support, but then the whole thing was on Elsa and the doctor to get the babies out safely. The doctor looked up and smiled at her.
“Alright, they are coming whether we want them to or not. When I say, give it another push, as hard as you can,” the doctor smiled.
Anything that was about to be said ended as a flash of golden light announced the arrival of a woman with red hair wearing a nurse's gown and with a kindly face, not to mention a golden crown with white wings around her head. Everyone gaped a the arrival of the obvious goddess and Elsa was about to speak when she held up a hand. The doctor was about to demand what was going on when she gave him a hard look.
“Doctor, I have no doubt of your competence, but these are special children. Thus, I am here to see to it they come into the world properly. Please stay and assist, but I must be the one to deliver them,” Freyja spoke the order softly.
“Of course!” the doctor wasn't about to argue with a goddess.
As Freyja took her position between Elsa's spread legs she laid a gentle hand on Elsa's pelvis and suddenly a wave of soothing warmth spread across Elsa. She could still feel the pain and pressure, but now they weren't overwhelming. Freyja began giving orders to Elsa and Elsa followed them each time. Finally, after what seemed like hours, the two babies were out, spanked, cleaned up and handed to Elsa. Freyja put a gentle hand on Elsa's head and smiled down at her.
“Two beautiful babies, Elsa. I know you belong to another goddess, but she couldn't be here to help, so I came. What are you going to name these two precious girls?” Freyja's voice was every bit as gentle as her touch.
“Freyja, we haven't decided on names for both of them yet. We were still fighting over them when my water broke,” Elsa managed a tired smile.
“Might I make a suggestion then?” Freyja asked.
“Of course!” the trio of mothers agreed simultaneously.
“This one, with golden hair, should be named Lagertha. And this one with raven black hair should be named Palila,” Freyja suggested.
“I like them,” Moana agreed.
“I'll second that,” Helga chimed in.
“Well, that solves that! We've been going around and around about the names for two days! But this just brings me to another question, Freyja. Does this count as both blessings, or just one?” Elsa cocked an eyebrow as she held her daughters.
“Just the one. They would be identical twins, and other than their hair and complexions, you will have a hard time telling them apart. Honestly, how they wound up looking different at all is partly an agreement between me and Te'Fiti. We agreed that if, by some accident, you wound up having twins, one would always take after you, and the other Moana. I think Te'Fiti knew this would happen, so I am going to give her a hard time over it. Still, these two precious bundles only count as one of your blessings. You still have a second with Helga. Just like any future twins will only count as one.
“To my mind, you three have earned a large family with each of you being lonely the way you have been until each of you met. Elsa, I know you had a beloved sister, but that didn't quench the loneliness in your heart, particularly after she died. We all knew you had always wanted more siblings. As for the rest of you, well, consider this our gift to compensate for your small families of the past,” Freyja explained.
“You know, I had a decent sized family,” Helga pointed out. “Eight older brothers.”
“I am aware. And all of them are such nice boys too. Still, I find it funny that of all your siblings, you wound up to be the warrior of the family. Strange how that works, sometimes. Still, that is beside the point.
“Twins are something the gods can't simply will to happen. Well, we could, but the results are usually sub-optimal. We've never had a good situation come of that. However, creation gods, like myself and Te'Fiti can generally sense when the chances are higher. Lucky guess on Te'Fiti's part if you ask me,” Freyja laughed lightly.
“I see. Well, I am still extremely happy about this,” Elsa smiled.
“You should probably see to their first meal now, Elsa. Babies are always hungry!” Freyja smiled brightly.
“Freyja, if you don't mind, can we have a chat at some point? In private?” Helga asked suddenly.
“Of course, dear Helga. I was hoping you would eventually ask for that. And yes, I know what is on your mind. How about when Elsa and Moana go to sleep? Despite my blessing, this was still an ordeal and will have taken a great deal out of Elsa,” Freyja suggested gently.
“Helga, just go now. I am tired, and the babies need to nurse. Moana can stay with me until you get back,” Elsa prodded as she passed one of her daughters to Moana, who simply held the baby up to her breast just as Elsa was doing. Both of them had plenty of milk for the newborns.
“Alright, now is just as good. Where should we go then? This place is crawling with servants right now,” Helga shrugged.
“Oh, I have a place. Don't worry. Just steady yourself, cause this can be a mild shock,” Freyja smiled and then she and Helga disappeared in a flash of golden light.
Elsa gave a look to Moana, “She is finding her gods at last. I am happy for her.”
“Shame we couldn't convert her to Te'Fiti. Still, if this is where her heart is leading her, then I say good for her! She'll fit right in in this house then. And to top it off, it will be an end to that moping look she gets whenever we bring up the gods!” Moana smiled brightly.
Elsa chuckled a bit, but sobered quick. “Mo, we need to let the nannies handle the girls when we are off fighting. We can't take newborns into battle. But, I will agree, that while we are home, we'll be the primary ones taking care of them. And I refuse to be my parents!”
“Island Lilly, they did the best they could based on what they understood. You can't fault them for that. Yes, it was the wrong way to handle the situation, but they didn't know any better. I am sure they loved you with all their hearts. So, try to forgive them, please. Because we have seen how the harder you try to not be like your parents, the more you act like them. Time and again, honey,” Moana put her free hand on Elsa's shoulder.
“I know, Mo. I know,” Elsa sighed.
26 June 1916 – The Arendelle Royal War Ministry
Helga growled in frustration. The rebuilding effort was proceeding at breakneck speeds, and the fronts hadn't changed in a while. The map spread out on her desk showed that the latest offensive had failed even before it began. And the areal photographs were showing that the Allies were reinforcing the lines with fresh troops. Helga would give her left breast to know where they were getting those soldiers.
Unfortunately, since she'd taken over the ministry from her predecessor after that bungled operation, she'd been trying to get a handle on things. She understood now why Loa Tai had been so stressed and she'd had salt and pepper hair when she'd given Helga the debrief. Helga made a mental note to contact Loa and apologize on behalf of the crown. Unfortunately, her sacking had been parliament's doing, not Elsa's.
She pushed back from her desk, got up and was about to leave to go see her daughters, when a knock came at the door. Helga groaned and opened the door and found her secretary standing there. Her secretary wore her trademark grim look as she noted Helga was putting on her jacket, but then she smirked.
“I should chew you out for leaving early, boss, but as it happens, you might want to come and see this. The generals forgot to invite you initially, but apparently one of them eventually remembered. That new mechanical contraption from England is about to demonstrate. You'll want to see it in action as much as them,” Helga's secretary smiled.
“Alright, Valka. Lead on. And how did the generals forget to invite me, as head of intelligence, to this?” Helga quirked an eyebrow.
“Thing is, boss, I think it was a genuine accident. The secretary's network was talking and it seems that the memo to invite all senior staff got knocked off someone's desk and lost. So they have been trying to figure out who got it and who didn't. Either way, it is a moot point. I was told they are specifically waiting for you,” the secretary shrugged.
The pair walked out to a waiting car and the driver started the engine. Helga sighed as she noted that they were taking the well traveled and familiar route to the weapons testing grounds. When they arrived, she noted that there were a number of other official cars there. Helga got out and walked up to the stands where a large gathering of men and women were waiting. They all stopped talking as they noted her arrival.
Two women to one side waved Helga over to them and she smiled. She joined them and was about to ask what was going on when a colonel called on everyone to take their seats as the demonstration was about to begin. Helga groaned and then did take her seat as did all the other brass.
It was a sunny and warm day, but not so bad that everyone was uncomfortable. The wait was a short one and then a giant snorting vehicle paraded out onto the field. Instead of wheels, it had treads, and a short snout of a canon pointed out the front. The boxy thing was ugly to behold, but the colonel announcing the thing as a “tank” seemed quite pleased with it.
The tank went through several maneuvers, tearing up the ground as it went, though it wasn't fast at all, and barely moved at the speed of a jogging man. Then came the weapons test, and several real infantry lined up and shot at the tank with several weapons common on the battle lines. Not even one bullet penetrated the tank's armor. Once that was done, the commander popped out of the tank and gave directions for the thing to turn and face several dummy vehicles that had been set up, including an armored truck.
The cannon roared several times, and each shot struck true. The other vehicles went up in flames as the shells blew them to pieces. The armored truck was last, and the shell didn't penetrate the armor, but it did blow the truck up all the same, as the unarmored fuel tanks and cab felt the full brunt of the fire. When it was done with that, the tank rolled over several of the common impediments at the trenches, such as barbed wire and shell holes.
With that, the demonstration was done. The tank rolled up to the stands and the crew got out and took a bow. The brass talked excitedly among themselves as the vehicle demonstration ended. Finally the colonel called for quiet so that questions could be asked. Helga was quick to raise her hand.
“General Helga,” the colonel acknowledged.
“This was nice and all, but can that blasted thing cross the trench lines? And why do you have to turn the whole stupid thing to point the gun at anything? Can it even be depressed enough to shoot into trenches?” Helga demanded seriously.
Several generals nodded and staffers all nodded and murmured among themselves. The colonel, meanwhile looked like he had expected those questions. “General, right now, we don't have any way to aim the cannon without turning the whole tank. We are working on that. Also, the canon can be depressed, but not so much as you might want. As for crossing trenches, well, the wider ones would be a problem, yes. However, at the narrower sections of both our lines and the enemy lines, they can in fact cross them.”
“Alright, and what about other enemy versions of these? Could this thing take out one of them?” Helga asked again.
“Yes. All it would take is armor piercing shots. We have the shells, but didn't feel the need to demonstrate them on this field today,” the colonel confirmed.
Helga sighed and sat back down. Several other generals raised their hands and asked questions. Helga listened intently, but she felt worried all the same. Several of the industries were back up and running, but adding these to the production lines would tax them severely. Though, she admitted, that if enough of these things could reach the lines, they could theoretically make the difference. Provided they got there fast enough to beat the Allies to it.
Otherwise, it might just be another thing to deadlock on.
13 October 1916 – The Arendelle Royal War Ministry situation room
Elsa and Helga hugged Moana tight as fresh markers were placed on a map of the Pacific Realms. No one had seen the USA move, but move they had, and like lightning. The loss of the Hawaiian Islands had hurt, bad. A significant chunk of the Arendelle Royal Navy's Third Fleet had been based there, and the Americans had sunk most of the fleet still in their docks. And they hadn't stopped there.
Already American ships were fanning out into the various island chains, and the Arendelle Navy was desperate to stop them. The battle front was a confused mess as the ships sought each other out and destroyed each other in isolated pockets. The only good thing was that Second Fleet was forewarned and already moving, though it was heavily under strength to try and take back Hawaii.
So, for right now, they were focusing on defending the waters around Tomatoa and the Tahitian island chains. And Tomatoa was cranking out new ships at an increasing tempo. The problem was manning those ships. In almost every area of the Pacific, the numbers were coming up short, and not because people weren't volunteering. It was because it was a sparsely populated region to begin with.
Thankfully, New Zealand was making up the difference and producing sailors at a pace almost faster than the Naval Academy in Arendelle proper. Sadly, it wasn't enough to throw back the juggernaught that was bearing down on them. Austrailia was remaining neutral since their break with England, but everyone knew it was in favor of the Allies. And Canada would be no help as they had just been invaded by America too.
America was a titan and was throwing it's weight around with expert care. American troops were already in the European Theater. Canada was invaded, and now the Pacific Theater was proving to be a mobile mess of ships trying to out maneuver each other. And the timing couldn't have been worse.
The move came on the heels of reports of an uprising in Russia, that had Czar Nicolas in dire straights. Thankfully, Helga had sent the warning to the Czar in time to keep him and his family from being caught or killed, while letting the loyal Russian Army work to defend the monarchy. And true to her word, Elsa had sent aid to extract the besieged Czar and his family before the Reds could get them. He was now as guest at the Royal Residence, even as Arendelle troops, who had previously battled the Russians, were flooding into Russia to try and stem or turn back the Red Revolution. Britain had promised troops as well to help in the even that the Imperial Russian Army and the Imperial Arendelle Army proved inadequate to the challenge.
In the end game, the Centrists had the Allies stalled, but only just, everywhere in Europe, but only there. With America in the mix, it was a growing possibility of defeat for the Centrists. Elsa was determined to not let that happen. German and Dutch naval forces were already springing into action in the Pacific, but that would take time. And Mexico was already talking about putting their weight on the southern border of the US, to take some of the heat off of Canada.
All of which meant nothing as Moana looked forlornly at the red flags marking hostile takeovers of Motonui and Lani Tai. Her and Elsa's homes were in enemy hands, and there was nothing Arendelle could do right the moment to get them out of the US' grip. It just seemed that every major move the enemy made was intended as a direct assault on Elsa and Moana's precious things. Finally, Elsa had had enough.
“Enough of this. We have to get those islands back, no matter what. I don't care how big the US Navy is, or how powerful of an industrial power the US itself is. We need to get Motonui and Lani Tai back. No. Matter. What.” Elsa put special and final emphasis on the last three words.
“Elsa, they aren't strategically important, and they haven't exactly been of great importance to the Empire. I know they are significant to the two of you, but convincing the general staff and Parliament to go along with it is going to be difficult. Particularly when we are pushing the Allies back all over Africa. Parliament is going to want to capitalize on those gains, not throw more good money after bad,” Helga shrugged as she played devil's advocate.
“No, Helga. We want to show you those two islands. We want to introduce you to our families. But as long as the US has them, we can't. And what is more, they are symbolic in ways that go beyond strategically significant or even financially significant. If we can't take them back, then the Empire is doomed,” Elsa sounded completely defeated, and she couldn't help it. She was hurting as much as Moana over the US' move.
“Fine. We'll get a fleet together to take them back. It is just going to take time,” Helga nodded firmly, as she read that Elsa would accept no other answer.
12 November 1916 – an unnamed mansion in New York City
Aries checked his reflection in the bell one last time. Aside from his decidedly Greek features, no one would suspect who he was based on his outer looks. His three piece suit was even high fashion in this city, so he would look right at home in this mansion. He nodded as he accepted his appearance and rang the bell.
A few minutes went by and then the door opened and a butler cocked an eyebrow to see a stranger, even a finely dressed one, on the door step. “I am sorry, sir, but my master is not accepting visitors at this hour,” the butler had a decided Bronx accent and his pale skin said he didn't get out much.
“The name is Lord Abraxis. Please tell your master I come to speak to him about a mutual enemy, and one he would likely be most interested in seeing laid low,” Aries' voice was melodic and a deep bass, which went well with his physique.
The butler cocked an eyebrow, “Please wait here. I'll see if he wants to speak to you.”
The butler closed the door in Aries' face, rudely so, but Aries figured that was par for the course. It was well past dinner time and getting on to full dark, though New York had a reputation for never sleeping. And the man he was here to see was a renowned recluse. A butler rude to a caller who came at an hour later than would be normally acceptable was no surprise.
Finally the door opened again and the butler frowned, “He is waiting in the den. Be quick please.”
Aries followed the butler through the mansion which had two maids, both of them attractive young women, cleaning the house. At least, he only saw two maids. A house this size would need a considerable staff. Either way, he paid close attention to the winding passages, and noted each of the wards of non-detection and counter-teleportation that had kept him from just popping in on this man. They were expertly done, and would keep even a god out, and from being found by a certain demigoddess.
Finally, the butler opened the double doors to the den and announced Aries' false identity. A voice called from within to come in. The butler stepped aside and Aries stepped inside. He found himself inside a well kept and organized library and den. And despite the innocuous covers of all the books, Aries could see that many of them were tomes on magic, disguised as antique novels. This collection had taken time to build.
In the center, in front of the fireplace, sat a man in dapper, if comfortable clothes. The man had a shaggy mop of brown hair, brown eyes, and a fair, but obviously Scandinavian descent appearance to his face. Aries smirked as he waited to be acknowledged. Finally the man closed a spell tome and looked at Aries with a grim expression.
“You come into my home unbidden, false god. Only your stated purpose got you through my front door as it is heavily warded. So speak your plot and be done with it,” the man snarled.
“Such hospitality from a fallen prince who has become a prince again, though of merchants, rather than a kingdom,” Aries dug his claws in.
“Do not presume anything in this house, Aries. I am the master here, and your powers will not work in here. Nor would that heathen bitch's. Speak your peace, and begone from my home!” the man shot back.
“Hans, is that any way to treat an ally? I know it was you who pushed the American government into acting. Your pull is so great that you are almost the puppet master of this country now. Even during an election year! I must applaud you on that. And your campaign of misinformation that branded Elsa as a tyrant oppressing the people of the South Pacific was marvelous. Well done, playing on this country's puritanical bias.
“But I wonder, was it your idea that the US should attack Motonui and Lani Tai so swiftly?” Aries asked.
“Of course it was! I convinced the government that while they were neither strategically important, or even worth much economically, nothing would hurt the bitches worse than to lose those two islands. And that they would fight tooth and nail to get them back. Which is why the Pacific Fleet is keeping large contingents on both islands, with plenty of ships there as well. We know Elsa will move to take them back. It is just a matter of when,” Hans snarled.
“Do tell me how you came to be so mighty as to be able to do that,” Aries purred.
“Then have a seat. I'll still be brief on this,” Hans indicated the chair across from him, and Aries sat, eager to hear the man's tale. “After my unfortunate loss to Elsa, and her bitch sister, I traveled here to America. It wasn't hard to disappear here. And I quickly made friends with the right people in the lower ranks of society. I started fresh, with nothing, and an assumed name. In time, I put together the money to buy out several railroads, coal mines, oil wells, and even some gold mines. With all my industrial investments, I quickly became a titan, easily outpacing even the most wealthy families in the States. Right now, I am worth over a billion dollars, which is more than any other man in the country by a large margin.
“Of course, my companion had something to do with that, and of course our powers to manipulate people made it easy to buy out people when their minds were possessed. Made it all almost child's play. Of course, I have had to remain under anyone's gaze, so I have been operating through proxies this whole time. It means that no one has put together that I alone provoked this war, in an effort to catch those bitch demigoddess off guard. In time, I will settle up my differences with them, and put them in the ground once and for all, but for now, I need to study and build my powers so that they will not have a chance,” Hans finished.
“I must applaud you on your scheme. Still, you weren't acting alone to provoke the war. Some of my minions were doing my bidding in positioning the pawns to create the proper atmosphere to start this war,” Aries pointed out.
“Maybe so, but I paid to have that assassin hit the archduke. Perhaps we have both been working the same angle, but to different goals. I am sure you are not as focused on destroying Elsa and her sodomite bitch as I am. I owe her twice over for denying me my crown,” Hans growled.
“True, but then, I am also seeking a somewhat similar goal, though it is a bit more elusive and yet more tangible. Oh, and you should know, there are now three in that house you so hate, with two recent children to take their places should the mothers fall. And let us not forget the two additional demigods that reside in Arendelle now, just back from an excursion to England,” Aries played his cards well.
“Five?! There are now five demigods in Arendelle?! Names! Give me names that I might eliminate them! And who is the third bastard to have knocked Elsa up?!” Hans demanded.
“The five are Elsa, Moana, and Helga, as the central three and all of them wed to the others, though Helga has yet to make her vows, but they are principally a whole family. The other two are Jane Porter and her husband Tarzan. And it was Moana that had knocked Elsa up, through a blessing given to them by their gods,” Aries dragged the information out.
A wave of black energy swept the room as Hans roared in rage. Finally, he came back down and his look was of savage fury. “How are there five now? And how many to follow? We knew the gods had forbidden the making of any more demigods! Not since those two bitches joined that giant savage of a man! It was a law!”
“And laws change. There will soon be many more demigods in the world as the restriction has been lifted. Mostly, because of an argument made by Elsa herself before the entire senate of the gods. It is somewhat disturbing how much power she has to sway the opinions of the gods. Then again, the fact that she can kill a god with that ice magic of hers, well, it is a powerful motivator,” Aries played his last card.
“And that is why you come to me. You are afraid of her hitting you with that magic. Meanwhile, I faced her and survived to tell the tale. Just what are you wanting from me, Aries? You know I follow another god, but you chose to come anyway,” Hans demanded as he cocked his head in curiosity.
“Simple. An alliance. The time will come for us to strike out and take what we will from them, as not all demigods are going to be allied against us. We might find allies among them. For now, I have seen that monsters and demons have no power to stop these six demigods, let alone a world full of them. So, it comes to building alliances, with demigods of like minds. And perhaps, the other gods will finally see the folly of empowering mortals again,” Aries purred.
“Then let us negotiate those terms for our alliance, false god. If I am to better serve the one true God, then I must have allies myself it seems,” Hans held out his hand for Aries to shake.
1 December 1916 – Arendelle Royal Residence, nursery.
Elsa sat in a chair, Palila suckling at her breast, as Moana held a tiny Lagertha to her own. Helga sat next to the radio as the music of a jazz band played. Elsa smiled as Palila finished and then put the baby over her shoulder and patted it's back. Thankfully, nothing came up this time, but Elsa had been told to always keep a towel on her shoulder for burping the babies.
A soft knock at the door and Helga called to come in. In walked Jane and Tarzan, along with Czar Nicolas. Elsa smiled at the guests and waved them to the other seats around the room. Once they all had taken seats Elsa moved Palila to her other breast to continue feeding the child. Czar Nicolas had become accustomed to the sight of the Empresses of Arendelle breast feeding since coming to the Royal Residence. He smiled gently at the two mothers.
“Well, I am happy to see two healthy appetites! I remember when my own children were born, Anastasia seemed to consume her body weight in milk from the nursemaids. Only Ivan was the exception to that rule among them, as he has always been somewhat sickly. Still, it warms my heart to see that the two of you don't make use of nursemaids, like the court in St. Petersburg had insisted we do,” Czar Nicolas chuckled.
“You have no idea how hungry these two monsters are! And the fact that Moana and I are full time mothers, as well as empresses of a country keeps us quite busy. Changing diapers alone seems to be a constant chore. And from the smell of things, Palila is due again,” Elsa wrinkled her nose.
Jane chuckled herself. “You two should turn some of the work over to nannies. I am sure there are a great many in Arendelle who would love a chance to change the princesses' diapers.”
“Oh, there are. And we've hired a few, but we decided back after I became pregnant, that we'd be far more of a factor in our children's developments than the nannies. We want them to grow up knowing they are fully loved by their mothers. Which, of course, since Helga accepted our joint proposal, will mean all three of us in a few months. And from the reception to the news, Arendelle is only too ecstatic to have three empresses, with two princesses already,” Elsa smiled widely.
“Well, I hate to be a damper on this, but sadly, we've tracked Stalin down. He is hold up with a number of his lieutenants in a bunker in Siberia. Pulling him out of there is going to be a chore. I am just glad we didn't get into trenches chasing those red bastards from St. Petersburg and Moscow. However, I am fully out of the war, and I wouldn't think of trying another war with Arendelle or England for anything right now. You have been too good to me and my family. As far as I am concerned, our past will stay there. As of now, I am a friend of Arendelle, not an enemy.
“Though, I do know you did it for some selfish reasons. But I'll agree that no one wanted those communist bastards in power in Russia. I am just glad I'll be able to go home eventually. I am sorry that we played a part in the destruction of your home,” Czar Nicolas smiled sadly.
“Don't worry about it. We were planning to turn that old castle into a museum. Now we can simply rebuild it so that we can create the Arendelle National Museum while we formally move to the new palace that is already under construction. Only this one will have more island themes to it, as Moana and I agreed on that point, and the architect was enthusiastic about going with the idea. And it will be decidedly more modern and feature an actual shelter under it that we can use instead of having to cross the whole city to the War Ministry's shelter,” Moana smiled brightly.
“Yes, well, with Arendelle and British troops trouncing those Reds, I owe you a great debt. I think I'll start by helping to pay for a new palace for you. After the war is over, we'll have to talk about a formal alliance between Mother Russia and Arendelle. And while, officially, I have to denounce your spies in Russia, the fact that they found out about the Red time table just in time for me to get my family out isn't something I am about to overlook.
“Still, even with an eventual victory over the Reds, it looks like I am going to have to do something about the government in Russia. I think I'll take the approach you did in the 50's and form a parliament based on the Arendelle model. It couldn't hurt, after all. And it might even dissuade the people from thinking of us as tyrants again, at least to the point of supporting a revolution that is. I doubt that simply forming a new form of government will be enough to rehabilitate the Czars for all the years of oppression,” Czar Nicolas sighed heavily.
“Nicolas, it is a start. That is the best you can do right now,” Elsa smiled gently at the man.
“Yes, well, all that is wonderful and all, but my husband and I came for a reason, Empress Elsa. That man, Tesla, said he'd finished it, and it was working. Whatever that means. He said it was already detecting several instances, again, I have no idea what that means,” Jane put her hands on her hip.
“Really? That is outstanding news! We'll have to go see his results immediately!” and Elsa sighed as Palila finished her meal. “Once we get the babies down to nap, of course.”
Nikola Tesla smiled brightly as the royal family, including Jane and Tarzan entered his small shop in the Arendelle industrial district. His shop was littered with all kinds of creations and ideas, and some were even coming together nicely from the looks. And there were even working models of ideas that were yet to be released even to the Arendelle Patent Office. Ideas of military importance.
“Nikola! We got your message! What have you found?” Elsa positively beamed.
“I have a working model of several designs. And I'll say that it was harder to work on normal electricity than with magic! But enough of that! I have something special for you,” Nikola smiled as he waved them over to a manikin with an unusual backpack and weapon on it.
“What is it?” Elsa asked.
“A beam canon that fires magical energy. This is a crude design, but it actually works. Give me some time to refine it, and I can make your army truly fearsome in battle,” Nikola positively preened.
“You can have all the time you need. I am sure other countries are working on this as well, but let us hope you were the first to get it to work. Now, to the thing you called us here for! That is more important to us!” Elsa beamed at him.
“Ah, that! I have found a way to use a kind of sensor to detect high levels of magic in an individual, as well as in an area. And I found a way to project a location on a screen! Again, all of this is quite crude, but with your funding, we have made great advances. I can even show you the sensor and screen now. And it has been quite revealing. I quite literally saw you lot coming!” Nikola laughed.
“Yes, show us!” Helga smiled widely. Honestly, she was fond of the inventor, as he reminded her of one of her brothers.
Tesla led the group to a console where several dials and nobs surrounded a green screen that glowed dimly in the sun. Elsa and the rest noted that the screen was divided into a kind of grid that was marked in kilometers, which Elsa found unusual as Arendelle used the imperial system still. Still, it might make sense to transition to the metric system as it was proving to be far more efficient.
Tesla worked some dials and nobs and pressed a button. The device hummed to life and a lighter green bar swept around the screen in a circular pattern as a antena on the top rotated. Then there were four blips on the screen. One was right on top of the center point of the screen, and by far the brightest, but the other three were more spread out. Elsa noted that one was close to them, while the other two had to be in Europe by the distance indicated on the screen.
“Nikola, is there a problem? It is obviously detecting us, but what about these other blips?” Elsa indicated the additional dots that appeared on the screen.
“That is the other thing I wanted to bring up,” Tesla said sourly. “We are not alone on Arendelle it would seem. My best guess is that is some kind of monster or demon hiding in plain sight, as you once warned us. The other two are at different points along the front lines. This thing seems to have considerable range to detect, but not unlimited. They weren't there before the US acted, except for that one in our own back yard. We did a lot of fine tuning on it to be sure what we were seeing when we noted that one anomalous blip. Unfortunately, it looks like there is an enemy close at hand. That is well within the city limits.”
“We need to track it down then. Problem is, it could be anyone anywhere,” Moana growled.
“That is why I made a crude kind of hand held sensor that could detect it. The closer you get to it, the brighter and faster the light flashes. If it goes solid, then you are right on top of them and pointing the sensor directly at them. Be damned sure of who you accuse, my Empress,” Tesla handed Elsa a large square box with a gold rod sticking out of one end, and several lights all in a row.
“Got it. Guys, I am sorry to cut this short, and I want to apologize to you in particular, Nikola, but we can't just leave an enemy agent in our midst. We need to identify them, and now,” Elsa said firmly.
“We need our weapons and armor if we are going against something here,” Moana said flatly as the group turned.
“Exactly. I want to know who it is, but we are likely to get a real fight out of them, and we need to make sure we take it outside the city before we start throwing magic around,” Elsa agreed.
The group hurried to the temporary royal residence, collected their magical weapons, and then the five of them hurried out into the street and began following the indicated direction of the device, which also featured a normal compass. Several Royal Guard followed the group though they were there out of duty, not really a need to protect Elsa and the others.
The sensor led them through the streets and up to the grounds of the War Ministry. Elsa winced to know that there was something foul in her own military. However, they didn't have to go far into the campus as the lights began to flash wildly as a Colonel, the same one from the proving grounds demonstrating the tank, walked up. As he came up to Elsa, the lights went solid, and Elsa sighed.
“My Empress, welcome to the War Ministry! We were unaware of your visit! Let me get the staff assembled,” the colonel saluted crisply.
“Or you can tell us who you really are,” Helga demanded.
“General?” the colonel actually looked confused.
“We know you are more than you seem, Colonel, so tell us who you really are, and what you are doing here!” Elsa snarled as she pointed her obsidian sword at the man's throat.
The Colonel looked scared for a moment, before he just sighed and then his eyes flashed black as night. “Damn, I was hoping you'd never find me! But I guess all pretenses are off,” the Colonel's voice suddenly pitched into a deep bass.
Suddenly, a wave of power burst out from him and knocked everyone back ten steps. Elsa growled as she picked herself up and dropped the illusion that hid her armor. Moana did the same, and then Helga dropped hers, and it was as if two viking warriors of old were being led by a Valkyrie. Elsa didn't have time to contemplate the shining silver and gold on Helga's armor, as the Colonel was quick to draw his service side arm.
Only Helga was quicker and shot the weapon out of his hand. The royal guards picked themselves up and began firing at the Colonel who simply laughed at their efforts. Every shot seemingly passed straight through him. Elsa, Moana, Jane, and Tarzan all charged him even as Helga transformed her magic gun into a long rifle.
Helga's first shot was fired before any of the group got to the demon, though the demon was quick to dodge the shot. Again a wave of black energy pulsed out from him, only this time everyone was ready. Elsa transformed briefly into a giant eagle and came down from above for an overhead chop. Moana swept in from the left with a swing of her shark tooth spear, and Jane came from the right with her own tribal African spear. Tarzan was the only one to connect however as he charged straight down the center and transformed into a giant gorilla, landing a solid punch on the Colonel's face even as he dodged back out of every other attack.
The Colonel fell limp to the ground. Everyone carefully approached, even as onlooking secretaries and officers gathered. The Royal Guard did the smart thing and ordered everyone to step back. It proved wise as a third burst of black energy swept out of the Colonel even as a thick black smoke started leaking from the Colonel's mouth and nose. The smoke took the shape of some kind of humanoid monster with an ambiguous form.
Elsa growled as she saw the monster's true form. A shadow demon. Just what she didn't need right then. Fast on their feet, and damned hard to damage, from her studies. Still, it was weak on the attack and relied heavily on stealth and cunning to survive. They were the demonic equivalent of spies and assassins.
“You might have exposed me, and I am quite likely to perish here, but my purpose has been served. My master will still succeed!” the shadow demon hissed.
Elsa sighed, “And pray tell, who is this master you serve?”
“You'll know only too late to stop them!” and the demon launched itself at Elsa.
Only it never reached Elsa as a bolt of energy slammed into the demon's chest, even as a rifle cracked. Helga worked the bolt on her rifle and fired a second shot, catching the demon in the head this time, and the demonic smoke simply began to disperse, being carried away by the wind. Helga sighed as she lowered her weapon. The group gathered around the body of the Colonel and Elsa glared at it.
“I want his whole history with the Army checked out. From birth to now. I want to know who he really was, and how he came to be here. Or if he was always a loyal son of Arendelle, when he was possessed by that demon. And if he was a loyal son of Arendelle, and was just unfortunate enough to be killed by that demon, then I want a military funeral for him,” Elsa proclaimed.
“Yes, Ma'am!” came acknowledgments from around the court yard.
The group returned to Tesla's lab, not bothering to change, and found the inventor hard at work. Elsa coughed gently and he looked up. He winced at the obvious battle dress, but then did come over to the group. His face was grim all the same.
“I take it, it was someone important?” Tesla got out.
“Yes, Nikola. Placed in our Research and Development department. A full Colonel in fact. And the demon that came out of him is one noted from ancient times as being the most cunning of spies and assassins. There is no telling how long he was there, but an investigation is under way now. We have to assume everything in this lab, as well as the others, has been exposed to an enemy. Who, I can't say, but it is obvious that demon served someone, by his own statements,” Elsa sighed.
“Damn. And I just handed over some new designs this morning,” Tesla swore.
“Yes, well, that means I can't give you time to refine things before we press it into service. We need to get these new weapons on the field as quickly as possible. And I want that sensor deployed as a first line of defense as well. We need to know where these things are, and neutralize them quickly. Unfortunately, right now, there are only five known demigods, with one additional missing, with which to combat these monsters. So we need all the help we can get to pin them down,” Elsa sighed again.
“I figured as much, my Empress. I only hope we can get them deployed in time to stop this crazy war dead in it's tracks. Such a wasteful enterprise war,” Tesla sighed himself.
“Yes, well, for now, let's focus on what we can do. I completely agree with you on war being wasteful though. If we could have avoided this one, I would have preferred it. Sadly, it was not meant to be,” Elsa smiled sadly.
