Elsa stood at the bow of the Corona flag ship, deep in the advanced formation. Moana, Maui, Anna, and Rapunzel all stood beside her. She and Moana were wearing the fantastic armors Odin had given them, with their weapons at the ready. This was the day they had been anticipating for some time. The assault on Arendelle. The most massive fleet of war ships ever assembled was sailing on the island, fully aware of the level of defenses that awaited them.
Only, they weren't sailing down the main fjord to the actual town of Arendelle. Instead the fleet was approaching the island from the south west, and Arendelle was on the north west coast. It had been decided that the coastal defenses were weaker in the south and that was where the main invasion was going in. The English were leading the charge with almost two thousand Royal Marines. Next were to be the Southern Isles Marines. Following them was the Corona force including Elsa and company. It was theorized that between the five thousand English and Southern Isles forces, it would just be a safe enough landing to let Elsa get ashore.
However, there was one thing Elsa had insisted on doing before any shots were fired from the fleet. It just required her ship to get within range and sight of the coastal defenses, if not within shot range. And so, now her ship was weaving it's way out of the protective fleet, Corona flag waving proudly. It took time to get to position, but it was worth it. The shore batteries fired several test shots, and found the range too long. Which was perfect for Elsa.
She stepped up to a clear enough spot, and summoned her magic. She flung a huge ball of ice into the air which immediately exploded into a giant ice snowflake hovering in the sky, with a slight snowfall falling all across the shore. She let it hang there for a good five minutes before she dismissed it. She repeated it twice more, and no more shots came from the shore. If anything, the shore was disturbingly quiet.
They waited for a solid half-hour before a flag of Arendelle and a white flag both waved from the flag pole of the battery. Elsa nodded to the captain, who then sent the signal for the transports to start putting troops ashore. It took time, but eventually five thousand soldiers were ashore and Elsa and company were quick on their heels. When she got ashore she was shocked at what she encountered.
Standing before her were three officers, one Southern Isles, one British, and the last wore the uniform of the Arendelle Army. That last officer had the rank insignia of a Gunnery Captain. Elsa cocked an eyebrow as she failed to recognize the captain's face. She shrugged and helped her crew, starting with her wife, out of the landing boat. She approached the officers cautiously as she wasn't sure what exactly was going on. As she came up to the group, the three men saluted, but the Arendelle officer looked both shocked and relieved. Though his face darkened as he saw Anna.
“Queen Elsa! Ma'am!” the captain addressed her.
“Captain?” Elsa's tone turned the statement into a question.
“Thorbjorn, Ma'am. Gunnery Captain Thorbjorn. I am the surviving senior officer of the garrison, Ma'am,” Captain Thorbjorn stated in a crisp manner.
“Captain, what happened here?” Elsa asked.
“My Queen, when the Pretender King Hans took the throne, he did it under the guise of freeing us from Queen Regent Anna,” his gaze never wavered, but Elsa could read his body posture as one of anger towards Anna as he spoke her name, “and every soldier and sailor that she had enlisted under her rule turned on the loyalists and backed him. Most of us Loyalists, who didn't resist at the time, were sent to the furthest reaches of the Kingdom and given shit detail, Ma'am, if you'll pardon my language,” again, the Captain's report was precise and to the point.
“I see, Captain. We had gotten some word about that in Corona before we departed. What happened after that, and when we got here?” Elsa pressed.
“Ma'am, he replaced most of us or moved us around if he couldn't find a more 'loyal' officer to take our place. You chose the right harbor to land, Ma'am. Most of us here, including Colonel Larson were what are being called Snow Loyalists. Unfortunately we had more than a few Pretender Loyalists. When you sent your magic up to let us know it was you, fighting broke out, and the Colonel and most of the other officers, most of whom were Pretender Loyalists, were killed in the opening shots. It was a fast action by everyone here, but we took the garrison with minimal casualties. There are five hundred soldiers awaiting your command, my Queen!” the Captain finished.
Elsa looked at the other two officers. They nodded to back up the Captain's story. “Queen Elsa, we have secured the garrison, and they are still collecting the bodies up. But so far every soldier here surrendered and swore fealty to you instantly. What do you want to do with them?” the English officer asked her.
“Round them up, arm them, and get them ready to be integrated. This won't have to go so fast as we thought, Colonel. We need to get to and round up every able bodied Snow Loyalist, and get word to those in Arendelle proper that I am here. If Hans only has partial control of the country, it will be better to enact Operation Snow Storm instead of going for Operation Leopard Cat. Operation Maori was a success, Colonel. Please pass the word. We'll dig in here until we can get intel on how to proceed from here,” Elsa's queenly voice was in full force.
“Yes, Ma'am, your majesty. I'll see to that thing,” the colonel saluted and hurried off.
“Meanwhile Captain, I feel I owe you an explanation, you and all your men. It seems we have all been a victim of Hans these last three years. Please gather them and have them assemble somewhere I can address them, please,” Elsa requested.
“Yes, your majesty!” and the captain hurried off.
Which left the Colonel of the Southern Isles forces. Elsa turned to regard him. The resemblance was striking, so she had to address it. “Colonel, I take it you are one of his brothers?”
“Yes, your majesty. I am Sven, fifth in line for the crown. For better or worse, we made Hans' life a living hell when we were younger. I felt partly responsible for this mess, so I had to come and end it. Olaf, our older brother and third in line, is the Admiral of the Southern Isles fleet here today. In a sense, we have all had the same feelings on the matter. From Father on down. We may have driven Hans to this, but ultimately, he is a demon of his own creation, and responsible for his own actions,” Colonel Sven replied calmly.
“That is an interesting perspective, Colonel. How do you resolve that in your mind?” Elsa asked quietly.
“By remembering that of the thirteen of us, only Hans has gone down this road. Other than Erik, who stands to inherit the throne, none of us succumbed to the abuses of our brothers. We shrugged them off, and looked at them as trials to overcome and help us become better men for it. Hans apparently did not. He did not see them as learning experiences. Instead he has harbored resentment and greed all these long years,” Colonel Sven explained.
“I see. And now that we are here, Colonel?” Elsa pressed.
“Do not fear. None of us wanted a war, and none of us will betray you. This shall go down exactly as planned. Hans will pay for all of this. Dearly I think,” Sven replied sadly.
Elsa nodded. “Sven, you have my sympathies. I hate to think that I was almost in your position with my own sister before we broke Hans' curse on her. I shudder to consider what you must be going through.”
“Ma'am, I am glad you are not in my position. I know how close you two are. None of us ever had that close of a bond with Hans, more because of his actions than our own desires when we got older. He shut us out in such a way that made it clear we were his enemies, even when some of us tried to reconcile with him. As such, it might be easier for me than you think,” Sven explained sadly.
“Well, I hope we still win, Colonel. For now, let's get to addressing the five hundred troops I still command. If you'll show me where they will muster?” Elsa invited.
The group, Elsa's and the Colonel, all found their way to the garrison mustering yard, where five hundred Arendelle soldiers stood in perfect uniform lines, if not exactly dress uniforms. A small platform looked down on them and Elsa and her group were quick to ascend the small steps up. When she did, she looked out on the grim faces of the men below her. She nodded and drew a steadying breath. She then felt Moana step up next to her, and she drew strength from the presence of her wife.
“My good men,” Elsa started, “I don't know what you have been through, and I certainly don't know what is going through your minds just now. Just know I am proud of each of you for sticking to your loyalty to me. However, I think there is something that needs addressed before we go any further in retaking our homeland from a Pretender.
“Anna, as Queen Regent, was cursed by Hans. She had been under a powerful curse since a month after my departure for the Orient. Gentlemen, none of her actions were her own. She was a puppet to a greedy and treacherous man who had duped us all into a massive war all so he could claim my throne as his. Anna was every bit the victim, same as you.
“I know that won't change the past, and I know it might not change some of your minds, but know that ever since the curse on her was broken, she has expressed desire for punishment for her actions. And as the rightful Queen of Arendelle, under our own laws, I am obligated to do so. And so I shall render my judgment on my sister for her involuntary actions.
“Anna, please step forward,” Elsa commanded as she stood aside.
Anna didn't know what was going on, but she still stepped up and faced Elsa, the pain evident on her face. “Kneel, Anna,” Elsa commanded again. When Anna knelt before Elsa, Elsa took another steadying breath and raised her hand up and facing her sister.
“Anna, as your Queen, and not your sister, I must pass judgment. Even though all your actions were done under the power of a sinister and wicked curse, I cannot forgive the lives you took. There is simply too much blood on your hands. As such, your fist punishment is that you are removed from the line of succession. Second, pending the retaking of Arendelle, and the defeat of Hans, you will spend not less than two years in the dungeons. After that, you will suffer exile from Arendelle, and on the pain of death should you return. And so it is done,” Elsa's tone never wavered, and her determination was evident, even through the obvious pain the pronouncement brought.
Rapunzel inhaled audibly at the judgment, Moana put a steadying hand on her wife's shoulder, and Anna visibly wept. Maui, however, stepped up between Anna and Elsa. His glare reminded Elsa of the time on the boat when he had flown off leaving the group when his hook had been cracked.
“Elsa, no! You can't do that! She is your sister! She is blood!” Elsa had expected him to blow up in her face, as she knew how hot his temper was.
What no one expected was for Captain Thorbjorn to step up and side with the large islander. “My Queen, I must agree with this big man. You can't do that! I do not doubt that she was cursed, and as such, she is innocent of her crimes. The real blood rests on Hans' hands. Not hers! I beg you, pardon Princess Anna!”
There was a chorus of agreement from the crowd of soldiers. Elsa was stunned. She hadn't expected that. She gave the captain a hard look.
“Captain, you forget your place. But I must ask. What makes you so certain of this decision?” Elsa's tone was firm, but inquisitive.
“Ma'am, I apologize for my abruptness, but Princess Anna was under a curse. And while none of us knew it, we knew something wasn't right with her! All of us recognized that Princess Anna had changed drastically, but we couldn't do anything about it at the time. We knew something was wrong, but we were too busy trying to hold things together against the Concordant. If you insist on punishing Princess Anna, then I must insist you punish all of us, as we stood by and did nothing to stop it in your absence,” the captain's voice was full of firm resolve and when Elsa looked at the other men, she found equal resolve there as well.
Elsa nodded, and looked at her wife. “Moana, my wife, I cannot in good conscience pardon my sister. However, these men raise a valid point. What say you?”
Moana nodded. Absolutely none of this had been rehearsed, or planned, but she knew her part instinctively. “Elsa, my wife, as you can't pardon her, then it falls to me. While Elsa's judgment stands, on my authority as Queen of Arendelle, I pardon Anna for all crimes of which she stands accused. It was none of her doing, and as such, she is innocent.”
Anna looked up at the pair as Elsa considered the words of Moana. Finally, Elsa looked down at Anna again. “Then so be it. Anna, this day your are spared your punishment by the will of the Queen of Arendelle, and the will of the very people your wronged under the curse. However, even if you have been found to be innocent, I cannot allow this to happen again. From this day forth, you are Countess Anna of Raven's Nook and stripped of your place in the line of succession. Never again will you endanger all of Arendelle. Even by accident,” Elsa's voice was soft and sad at the last part.
Moana nodded at the lighter sentence, and the captain and the rest of his men seemed to accept that as sufficient. Even Maui grunted in acceptance. “Rise, Countess Anna,” Elsa commanded.
Anna rose to her feet, tears in her eyes, but she managed a weak smile. Elsa held out her arms, and Anna rushed into the hug. Then the courtyard broke out in cheers at the far more happy ending to the case. Elsa hugged her sister for all she was worth, and then broke apart. Moana was next with another hug for Anna, all of them glad to have put the who sordid mess behind them.
However, once the happy moment was over, Elsa had to turn back to the crowd. “I know many of you have questions, and I promise to answer as many as I can, but to summarize for the immediate moment, my absence needs explaining. For the past three years, starting when then Admiral Hans blew my ship out from under me, I have been living in the South Pacific, where I met my wife, Moana. We have shared numerous adventures, and I can probably sail better than most of our current sailors on my little boat, now. That said, I am here to fix the problems that have arisen in my absence. I realized that I can't just leave this country like that again.
“So for the immediate moment, I am here to stay, and will not be leaving any time soon. As will my wife. Once we have settled up with Hans, that is. Which brings me to another point.
“In dealing with Hans, I must ask more of you than any ruler of Arendelle has before. I must ask you to help me retake this kingdom from a pretender to my throne. This may mean having to fight our own kin, which will be a sad thing indeed. Also, it may mean many casualties, as I intend for us native Arendellians to be the leaders of this campaign. Any man who does not wish to be a part of this need only leave formation now, and no one will think lesser of them for it. I know this is a tough call to make,” Elsa paused to watch the crowd. Not one man so much as twitched. Elsa smiled sadly.
“So be it. Now, for the mission at hand. The brief is this. We are going to entrench ourselves here, and the ships are going to move to blockade the ports. In the meantime, we need to get word to as many other loyal sons of Arendelle as we can. And even the daughters. In this, any person, regardless of gender, who can carry a rifle and help defend this country from Hans is needed. I'll leave it to Acting General Thorbjorn here to decide how best to use each of you to this goal. And we only have a few weeks to do this as we must hurry before the fall snows come in. I may be immune to the cold, but I am sure none of you are,” that earned a few chuckles.
“And as your Queen, I want to thank each and every one of you for your service in this. I will try to be a worthy queen for you all,” Elsa smiled as she finished.
Elsa stepped back and turned to the mildly stunned now Acting General Thorbjorn. “I know it is a bit sudden, General. Sadly, I find myself without a Military Command so you are the man on the spot as the highest ranking surviving officer. I am sure you will not let me down.”
“No Ma'am! I will never fail you!” and Thorbjorn saluted sharply.
Elsa smiled and waved him to follow her as she turned to the Southern Isles Colonel Sven, who had been standing silently at the back of things. Elsa smiled at him, “And now, Colonel, let's get to the command area and begin putting this into action.”
“As you say, Your Majesty,” and Colonel Sven led the way to where the other senior officers were gathering.
Elsa groaned as the wind changed direction again. This time of year the wind was from seemingly every direction as the winter began to close in. The birch trees were already shedding leaves as the days got shorter. Another check of the map only increased her frustration.
In the two months since she had landed, her Arendelle forces had grown to two thousand troops alone. However, Hans wasn't sitting idle. Arendelle itself had massive earthen works going up all around it, and her forces had been forced into a siege of the town after several pitched battles forced an adjustment to her plans. Elsa sighed, and felt a comforting hand on each shoulder.
She looked to either side and saw her wife and sister there supporting her in the command tent as she looked on in despair at the lines on the battle map. General Thorbjorn was updating it to show a recent bulge where Hans' troops had forced her forces back somewhat on the eastern side of the town.
“Damn it. We should already be in the city! Where is he getting his support? We have him blockaded, surrounded on the southern front, and still he manages to fight!” Colonel Sven cursed.
“I don't know, but his numbers are increasing. And they are all flying the old flag of Arendelle from before I changed it. Nothing wrong with the old purple and green, but to see it flying in Hans' name is an insult. I don't want to think he is forcing my own subjects to fight me. We need intel on what is going on in town,” Elsa sympathized with Sven.
“Agreed, Island Lilly. We still have troops coming in from surrounding communities, and the last tally is in, and our Arendelle forces are now numbering five thousand men and women. And almost every one of them is a volunteer or someone who was formerly one of your soldiers and Hans dismissed. The problem is the season is changing too rapidly here. Soon we will buried in snow and ice. I do not look forward to that,” Moana commented while looking at a report handed to her by a staffer.
“I know. Punzie, where are we on the winter gear? It looks like our foresight following the battle of Raven's Nook is going to happen after all,” Elsa asked Rapunzel.
“We are starting to get it distributed. Your troops are being given priority right now as everyone agreed, this is now your fight, and your troops are the ones taking the worst of it. So, following that, we will be giving it out to the more Southern nations' troops and work our way north by country of origin. Though, we have almost fifty thousand troops on the field now who all need winter gear. It will take time,” Rapunzel looked up from the report she was reading.
“Thanks Punzie. I'll try to hold off the snows if I can, with my ice magic, but I don't think I have that kind of control,” Elsa breathed a sigh of frustration.
Just then a runner came into the tent and handed a message to General Thorbjorn. He read it and grimaced. “Our scouts weren't able to get past the Pretender lines. However, they have asked for a parlay. I think this is just a stalling tactic. I'd advise not meeting them, my Queen.”
“No, let's go meet them. If for no other reason than to try and find out from them themselves what is going on. They have to meet us half way between the lines though,” Elsa said sadly.
“Yes, Ma'am, your majesty,” General Thorbjorn saluted and headed off to the communication tent to pass the word. It would take time to arrange the parlay.
Time passed and the board didn't change, but Elsa did note that the sound of cannon fire slowly subsided. Finally, General Thorbjorn looked at his watch and nodded. “It's time, my Queen.”
Elsa nodded, and waved for him to lead the way to where the parlay talks would be happening. They reached the point where a man in an unfamiliar uniform was standing waiting for them. Elsa led the group up to talk to him and he smiled grimly at them. Elsa looked him up and down, and while his uniform was unfamiliar, she was still able to tell he was a ranking officer.
“Dobryy den', byvshaya koroleva El'za,” the officer said, though Elsa didn't understand a word.
“I am sorry, but do you speak Norwegian?” Elsa asked.
“I do, but I am afraid you do not appear to speak Russian,” the officer said sarcastically.
Elsa's eyes narrowed. “You are a Russian officer, um...” her voice trailed of indicatively.
“I am a captain in the Russian Army, here at the request of an ally to defend him against the aggression of a deposed monarch in exile and her cabal of cronies,” the Russian said flatly.
“And captain, just how did you get here? Last I checked, this island was surrounded on all sides by my forces,” Elsa demanded.
“It is not hard to land our troops in an undefended fjord, nor an unwatched beach. King Hans made a personal request of the Czar, and he has seen fit to send us to defend his claim to the throne of this country,” the Russian Captain, again in the same flat tone, provided.
“I see. Then what is this parlay for? Hans' surrender?” Elsa asked snidely.
“Nyet, babushka. I came to offer you the chance to surrender. You will not take this city before winter sets in, and in that time, Mother Russia, and the Czar, will have sent reinforcements sufficient to hold this nation from your unlawful claims. If you accept my terms, you will be asked to leave by the most expedient means to a country of your choice to live in exile. These are King Hans' terms,” the Russian Captain's tone was snide in return.
“You can tell Mr. Hans, that I am Queen of Arendelle, and his pretending to my throne will not be allowed. You will find this winter to be even harder on you and your men than even the legendary Russian Winter, Captain. I'll see to that,” Elsa threatened.
“You would do that to your own people, babushka? You would freeze them to ice?” the Captain countered.
“Captain, Queen Elsa knows the risks, and we stand beside her, ready to suffer any discomfort or injury from her magic she might require to force you out. I can speak not only for our troops, but the loyal citizens of Arendelle trapped behind your lines. Do not question my Queen's resolve!” General Thorbjorn interjected as he noted Elsa's stance begin to waver. “Also, if you continue to refer to her as grandmother, then I will consider it a matter of honor and you will meet me to answer for your insult!”
The Russian Captain regarded General Thorbjorn for a moment, and then it looked as if he had a moment of recognition. “Ah! Captain Thorbjorn of the South Coast Garrison. So I see you are a full blown traitor to your king! You won't be extended the same offer as Elsa, I am afraid.”
“My loyalty was never to Mr. Hans! I have always been, and always will be a loyal subject of Queen Elsa of Arendelle!” General Thorbjorn spat back.
“Captain, you can go tell Mr. Hans that he had best stock up on firewood, because it is going to be a bitter winter for him and you. Also tell him, that if any of my citizens are harmed or in anyway deprived this winter, I will turn him to ice, personally. Good day,” Elsa turned on her heel to go.
“Then understand me, Mrs. Elsa. You are going to be the one responsible for your people's harm, not King Hans. You bring this winter upon them at your peril. Also, you will find we Russians are well adapted to bitter winters. Good day,” and the Russian Captain turned on his heel in response and went back to his lines.
When Elsa got back to her command tent, she slammed her fist hard on the table. “Damn them! How dare the fucking Russians back Hans!”
“Well, your majesty, language aside, at least we now know what we are facing. The problem here is that Russia is finding weak points in our armor and sending their troops over land from the north, I would wager. And despite them being only one country against many, they are damned hard fighters and can field more men than we can. It'd take time to raise the troops necessary to push them out of Arendelle,” the English Colonel mused sadly.
“Can we cut them off and stop them from landing any more troops?” Elsa desperately asked.
“I am afraid not. Arendelle the island is far too big for that. We simply lack the numbers of ships for it and our other commitments. And that goes for all of us, Senora,” the Spanish backed the English.
Elsa sighed and put her head in her hands, as she thought as hard as she could to find a way to break through. She turned the situation over in her mind time and again, even as the cannons started firing again. Then it hit her. She had been trying to avoid getting into a duel with Hans, but maybe that was the only way to get to him after all. The man wanted this to be as public as possible and was willing to make any sacrifice, even that of her own citizens, to smear Elsa's name. Elsa made her decision.
“Get a messenger here. I need to challenge Hans to a public duel. Me vs him. Nice and public. He shouldn't be able to refuse that,” Elsa demanded.
All the gathered officers looked at her like she had just gone mad, but Moana nodded. “I agree. The man strikes me as the type to be unable to refuse it.”
“Mademoiselle, are you sure about this? If he kills you, then we lose, and he wins!” the French Colonel asked cautiously.
“No, he doesn't. If he kills me, which he won't, he'd still have to deal with Moana, my wife, and trust me, he would not enjoy that experience. From the moment we wed in the Pacific, she has a claim on the throne as well,” Elsa flatly stated.
“Fraulein, as much as I'd hate to put it indelicately, but your marriage isn't recognized officially. A marriage of state, even under your pagan gods here in Arendelle, is a highly public affair, to say nothing of all the legal documentation as well. And I highly doubt we'd have the time to put that kind of affair together just now,” the German Colonel put in.
Honestly, Elsa thought, it was a rather Colonel affair in the command tent just then. Only General Thorbjorn was higher ranked than the various Colonels from the allied nations. That had been decided from the outset, to ensure that Elsa's forces led the charge, and held command of the retaking of their country, while still giving the allied nations a say in the matter.
“Maybe so, Colonels, but hear me out. I don't intend to fight him one on one, any more than he would. But it gets him out in the open where we can get to him, and potentially end this fighting. Preferably before winter sets in,” Elsa explained.
“Elsa, we can try, but there is no guarantee that he'll accept, no matter what you think,” Rapunzel put in.
“Oh, he will. Trust me on that. I know the type. He'll come because he thinks he is getting exactly what he wants. Oh, and he'll think he has all the tricks locked up. Elsa, I think Moana and I should be hiding in bug forms when this starts, while Rapunzel and Anna watch from a distance. When the bastard goes to call in his troops, I'll hold them off until Rapunzel and Anna can call in our own little surprise,” Maui put in.
“Alright, then I'll see to the message being sent, my Queen,” General Thorbjorn bowed and left the tent.
Hans smiled wickedly as he strode across the town towards the battle lines. She had done it sooner than he had planned, but it was finally time to kill Elsa once and for all. He climbed the hill that led to the entrenchments where cannons had been firing up until only ten minutes ago. When he reached the summit, he saw Elsa waiting for him in the middle of the battlefield. He looked around and didn't see any of the others she had brought with her for a moment, then he noted that Rapunzel and Anna were watching from their own lines.
“I'd have figured you'd have brought your sister and cousin into this! I am simply amazed you'd face me alone, Elsa!” Hans goaded.
Elsa simply stood stock still, wearing what looked like some archaic armor and a primitive obsidian edged sword brandished in one hand. Hans drew his own sword, though he doubted he'd even use it as anything other than a show piece. One strike from it and that primitive sword of Elsa's would be destroyed. He took his ready stance and then motioned with his hand for Elsa to charge.
And charge she did. Hans was simply stunned by the speed with which Elsa moved. She closed the distance almost too fast for him to get his sword up to block and destroy her sword. Only when they collided, it was his sword that shattered into several pieces, hers unharmed. He managed to dodge to the right to avoid the slash and he growled as he put distance between him and Elsa again. Then he noted that rather than the soft arms he remembered, Elsa's arms that showed through the armor's bracers and chain looked like well toned muscles.
“I see three years in the islands have been good to you, Elsa! Sadly, this is where your legacy ends!” and Hans drew a pistol and fired. Elsa dodged it easily and moved to come at Hans again, only to have her sword only hit what seemed to be an instantly summoned suit of armor and bounce right off.
Hans dropped his spent pistol and flicked his arm out to the side, and another blade, black with what looked like red veins shot out of his armor for him to grab. “Two can play this game,” Hans called out. Then he charged her and their weapons collided with a fountain of sparks of magical energy.
Their weapons flashed as each launched desperate attacks and counter attacks, each seeking the advantage. Elsa's style was as untrained as Hans' given that Hans was used to a fencing sabre, not a longsword. Still, they were evenly matched, and each thrust apart from the other. Deciding that weapons would not suffice, Elsa called to her magic and threw a spear of ice at Hans, only for him to blast it apart with a gout of flame. Again, and again, they threw magic at one another, only they seemed to be exact opposites and each attack countered the other.
Hans snarled. He hadn't expected that she'd be so good with a sword. That didn't matter though, as he still had other tricks. He raised his hand and then from two warps in space came four snarling hounds that looked like they were made of fire and ash. “Attack!” Hans shouted and the Hounds charged.
Only they didn't reach Elsa as two of them were destroyed out right by a bone fishhook and shark tooth spear that suddenly slashed out of seeming nowhere. The remaining two hounds flashed to the side and took up stances as Hans noted the appearance of a brown skinned woman with raven hair in similar armor to Elsa's and a big man with many tattoos all over him wearing nothing but a leaf skirt squaring off against the ash hounds.
“I see you come with your own tricks too!” Hans screamed at Elsa. He then raised his hand again and flashed it down. In an instant a regiment of soldiers came screaming up out of the trenches and took aim at Elsa. Only in the same moment that he had raised his hand, he noted Anna blow what looked like some kind of ivory horn.
Even as his men trained their weapons on Elsa, Moana, and Maui, they failed to note the hands burst up out of the ground and grip them by the ankles. The soldiers screeched in terror in the moment they fired wide as every one of them fell to the ground. They turned as one to note the armored skeletons rising from the ground, weapons at the ready to attack.
Hans roared in rage as he charged Elsa again. He had to end this quick! How had she known to counter each of his tricks?! Hans simply couldn't believe Elsa had been so prepared! Time to end it then!
Hans charged across the battlefield and slammed through a wall of ice Elsa put up to block his path. Only instead of grabbing her by the throat, he got slammed in the stomach by a spear of ice. The ice didn't penetrate his armor, but the impact took the wind out of him. Then Elsa came in from the side and slashed hard with her sword even as she threw raw magic at him. Hans was too slow to block it, but again his armor saved him as his movement denied her the kill shot at his neck.
He stabbed wildly with his sword, but her armor seemed to hold even his best attack at bay. So, instead of actually trying to hit her with his blade, he feigned to the right and then hit her square in the jaw with his spiked gauntlet-ed fist. He saw blood fly at last as the blow went home.
Elsa reeled back and skidded across the dirt. That cheep shot had hurt. A quick test of her jaw revealed nothing broken, but she could feel the blood flowing from four nasty cuts left by the spikes on Hans' gauntlet. She thanked Tangaroa then for making her a Demigoddess and twice as tough as a human. She covered the blood with her hand and tried in vain to staunch the bleeding.
She noted that Hans' soldiers were waging a desperate battle against the warriors of Valhalla. To either side of her, Moana and Maui fought desperately against the ash hounds Hans had summoned. The agile demons kept dodging even their best strikes. However, the demons were unable to get at Elsa either.
So far, Elsa hadn't responded to any of Hans' verbal jabs. She was resolved to not speak to him at all as she fought. Then she had a thought as Hans charged her again. Just as before he was feigning to the right while swinging with his left, only this time he hit nothing but air as Elsa transformed right in front of him. She flew in butterfly form to just above him, transformed back, and brought her sword down in an overhead chop to try and split his skull.
Hans must have sensed the attack as he dodged to the left. His roll brought him back to his feet even as Elsa nimbly landed. The pair squared off again even as the other battles raged around them. Then Hans charged with his sword again and Elsa rushed to meet him. Only instead of actually striking her with his blade, he threw a large amount of dirt into her face, temporarily blinding her, and causing her wounds to burn.
Elsa hit the dirt and struggled to clear her eyes. She knew she was vulnerable and rolled to her left as Hans went for his own overhead chop. Her dodge was too narrowly timed however as he still managed to catch her in the arm with his sword. She swore as she rolled again and again, trying to clear her eyes. Each time, it felt like Hans got closer and closer to her.
Finally, she cleared her vision enough to see again, and noted that she was almost back to her lines and Hans was still coming at her. She threw her sword up to block the strike, and magical sparks flew again. Elsa used her demigoddess strength to force Hans back, even as she slid her blade down his and slashed at his knuckles. She didn't do any damage through his armor, but he still instinctively dropped his sword as he flinched back.
That flinch was enough to let Elsa get the purchase she needed to force him back and throw him across the field. Elsa took a moment to get her breath back and assess the situation. Then she felt a presence beside her as Rapunzel charged up out of the trench and began to heal her wounds. Hans roared again, and charged the pair, only Elsa blocked his sword with her own again, giving Rapunzel a chance to hit him square in the gut with her frying pan, a blow that sent him flying back across the field.
“Thanks for that Punzie,” Elsa breathed as she felt the wounds finally stop bleeding.
“Hey, it is what family is for!” Rapunzel smirked.
Hans couldn't believe that Rapunzel had healing magic again! And that her frying pan had sent him flying like that! He had been blindsided by Elsa's ability to transform and her agility in dodging his attacks. The wind had been knocked from him and he was flat on his back next to his lines again.
“Get up stupid mortal! We are bound and if you fail we are both doomed! Get up and finish her! Use that power already! Enough toying with her!” Draxiloth railed in Hans' mind.
“Shut up, Drax! I'll use it, and finish the bitch!” Hans growled audibly.
Hans struggled back to his feet, and noted that Elsa's wounds were now healed and Rapunzel was retreating back to her line. He also noted that most of his soldiers were dead along with his two remaining ash hounds. He growled. This was far from over.
He called to the power Draxiloth had spoken of and sent a wave of black energy out from him in every direction even as Elsa charged him again. The undead warriors were utterly anhialated along with his soldiers. The charging trio of Maui, Moana, and Elsa were all thrown back, injured but alive. Hans reveled in the power, though he knew he could only manage it once more before he ran out of power. So, instead, he changed tactics, and charged Moana, knowing full well the woman couldn't hope to stop him.
Only she did. Moana was back on her feet in an instant and her spear stabbed him squarely in the chest even as he raised his sword to strike. His “oof” was an understatement of the air being knocked from her by her spear, though his armor held up. He rolled to his right to avoid a wicked chop from Elsa's sword, and leaped into the air to avoid being caught by a low swing from Maui's fishhook.
Once he righted himself he took only a moment to get a feel of how to attack. Then he charged Moana again, only instead of swinging his sword, he flung a ball of black ichor at her. She narrowly dodged it, and in returned spewed a gout of flames at him. He had to retreat from the biting flames, though he heard Draxiloth scream in his ear. He realized his mistake barely in time to dodge the wicked slice from Elsa's sword that was at neck height.
After the healing, and once the ash hounds were dealt with, the trio of demigods had gone on the attack. They didn't want another blast like the last one which had severely injured all three of them, though they were uncertain how. There were no visible wounds, but all of them felt wracking pain throughout their bodies. It was all they could do to press the attack.
Still, Hans was seemingly untouchable. However, Elsa was beginning to get an idea of how to end the fight. She looked to Moana and nodded. “The Lava Demon,” was all she said to her wife. Moana nodded, and she looked at Maui. “Follow our lead but don't let up for even an instant,” Moana told the big islander. Elsa took a breath to steady herself, and then charged again, only she threw a gout of snow and ice at Hans rather than swing her sword.
Hans dodged to his right and barely dodged big Maui's fishhook. However, his double dodge slammed him hard into the shark tooth spear of Moana, once again knocking the wind out of him. This time, the trio didn't allow him time to recover as Elsa came in for an overhead chop while he was doubled over.
Hans went to dodge to the right, but narrowly changed direction to avoid a gout of flame from Moana. However, his dodge slammed him face first into Maui's fist. The heavy blow stunned Hans to the point he reeled back away from the press of the trio. However, he was far from out of the fight.
He reached into that last burst and let it flow out of him, this time in an arc in front of him, doubling the power. It caught the trio of demigods squarely, and they all went down. Hans used the breathing space to shake off the bell ringing in his head. Once his mind cleared, he saw all three of them down on the ground, writhing in agony. Elsa and Moana looked like they were less affected, but they were still struggling to get back to their feet.
Hans felt the rage and anger building. He called his sword to him, approached Moana, and stood over her. It was clear the woman couldn't attack him through the pain she was experiencing, and he was resolved to hurt Elsa before he finally killed her. Draxiloth was screaming in his mind to finish Elsa first, but Hans pushed him back.
He grabbed Moana by the hair and yanked her roughly up so that she was struggling in his grasp. “Watch your failure, Elsa. I am going to start with your pretty sodomite savage bitch. I'd ravage her if I had the time, but this needs to end now. Say 'good bye' to your bitch!”
“No!” Elsa cried weakly in defiance.
Hans had raised his sword to strike Moana's head from her shoulders, only to have a sudden pain in his shoulder blossom. He dropped the sword again, and only then did he register the crack of thunder. He looked up to see the brunette Rapunzel with a smoking rifle pointed at him, with Anna standing next to her with her own.
“You leave my sisters alone!” Anna cried as she fired her shot.
The heavy lead ball easily pierced Hans' armor and slammed through his chest at close range, narrowly missing his heart, but puncturing his lungs. He dropped Moana and reeled back as the two merely mortal women dropped the rifles and drew pistols. In that moment, Hans realized his mistake of forgetting those two.
“And this is for everything you did to my people!” Anna cried as her pistol cracked, sending another lead ball into Hans' chest.
Hans hit the ground hard, he knew his blood was flowing out of him with each beat of his heart, and he could hear Draxiloth cursing him, though his attention was riveted to the brunette queen that came to stand over him. She was joined by Anna, Elsa, Moana, and Maui. The last three looked like they were barely standing, but Rapunzel's aim was directly between his eyes.
“And this is for everything you did to the world and your own people. Now die!” Rapunzel cried as she pulled the trigger on the pistol.
Only in that same instant Hans erupted in a black cloud and disappeared.
Two weeks later, Elsa stood in front of the gathered crowd in the main square of Arendelle. She had decided to hold the ceremony in the open so that all the people could watch her be crowned as Queen of Arendelle once again. Then came the ceremony to confirm her marriage to Moana under Arendelle law, and to make it official for the other countries of the world.
The air was chill as she slipped the simple gold ring on Moana's tanned fingers. She smiled brightly at her wife, and they kissed deeply. The crowd cheered for more than just the beautiful autumn wedding. The ceremony was to officially end a world war that absolutely no one had wanted, and everyone was eager to put behind them.
Except the Russians. They had to be forced to surrender, but it proved to be easy after the defeat of Hans. Though the group had agreed to not inform them that they weren't sure if Hans was alive or dead as he had simply disappeared. Still, the Russian ambassador was here to officially recognize Queen Elsa as Queen of Arendelle again. Elsa just didn't expect him to like her terms.
The party in the square lasted well into the night, with people reveling in the new found peace. Elsa and Moana retired early and shared their wedding bed a second time. It was as though a great weight had been lifted from the world that day.
In the coming weeks, Elsa met with ambassador after ambassador from all the affected nations. From her enemies, in exchange for accepting terms for peace, she demanded that all Pacific holdings be turned over to Arendelle jurisdiction. Most countries were reluctant, but it was a far smaller price than they had anticipated. When it came to dealing with her allies, it was a bit more tricky.
It took some intense negotiation, but in the end she was able to convince even the stuffy British to relinquish their holdings in the Pacific, including the Sandwich Islands in exchange for a heavy sum of gold to be paid over time. In the end, the South Pacific became almost entirely Arendelle territory, but Elsa was determined to restore the customs and traditions of her peoples. And she was determined to undo as much of the European damage to the islands as she could.
She smiled at Moana, Anna, Rapunzel, and Maui one day as the winter began to threaten to close in around the island. Rapunzel's boat to her ship was waiting, but Maui was boarding a boat back to the South Pacific, with a copy of the treaty to spread around to all the islands, and unify them under Queens Elsa and Moana.
“Be careful out there Maui. I doubt word will have reached a number of the European colonies yet, but you are still needed. I am glad I was able to get as much as I was, and only sorry the Philippines and Indochina escaped my grasp. Still, at least we got New Zealand and the Maori back,” Elsa said cheerfully.
“Oh, don't worry. I'll get word around. I expect to see you two out there on the waves again some day. Even if only to visit your father. I was thinking of making Matonui or Lani Tai my base of operations. You know, a place to come home to. Besides, the islands are pretty centrally located in the chains, so it would make sense,” Maui said somberly.
“And don't worry Elsa, I doubt that after this war anyone is going to be overly eager to go back to war with Queen Elsa, Demigoddess of the South Pacific, any time soon. And just know, no matter what, I still have your back with my frying pan!” Rapunzel waved her infamous implement for good measure.
“Well, I plan to build a much larger naval and merchant presence, if only to support and defend all my new holdings. So, I am inclined to agree with you, Punzzie,” Elsa laughed.
“And Maui, we will be seeing you again out there. Elsa and I agreed that we have to visit dad and mom at least once every five years. Which means royal state visits!” Moana smirked.
“Good! I'll be sure to let them know. Now, I gotta go, before your captain leaves without me!” and Maui hurried up the gangplank.
Rapunzel bid her final farewells and stepped into the boat that would carry her to her ship. Once the pair were under way, Moana, Elsa, and Anna turned back to walk back to Arendelle Palace. The smiles turned to determined frowns for Elsa and Moana. Anna gave them a curious look.
“Why the long faces?” Anna asked.
“Hans is still alive. I can feel it,” Moana said.
“So can I. I don't know when he'll show his face again, but he will. I know he will,” Elsa agreed.
“Then let him come! Now he will have to deal with all of us! And with all of us together, we can overcome anything!” Anna was determined to break the building depression of her two sisters.
Hans groaned in his bunk aboard the violently rocking ship. This time of the year, the North Atlantic was a wild ride indeed. His injuries were no longer life threatening, and the bullets had been removed by Draxiloth. The demon invaded every one of Hans dreams and berated him on his failure to kill the three demigods. Hans just took it and said nothing.
Draxiloth had been his chief source of healing until the wounds were no longer life threatening. Once he was back to stable, the demon had decided to let Hans heal naturally, to make a point. Hans was an immortal demigod-like being now, but he was still able to be killed. And he had very nearly been killed if Draxiloth hadn't teleported him to one of the Russian landing sites. The Russians had been quick to get him out, but they couldn't take him to Russia. So, once Hans could talk, he had demanded to be taken the opposite direction. America would be his new base of operations as he still intended to get his revenge on Elsa.
Only now, his revenge included Maui and Moana. He didn't expect to be able to do anything about Rapunzel or Anna, but maybe Anna's descendants, if she had any. So, he was going to bide his time, and build his power base as far from Elsa's spheres of influence as he could. And if he was right about how long the journey should last, he should arrive in New York in a mere three days.
Hans stood, still a painful experience, and looked at the mirror mounted on the bulkhead wall. “We'll still get them. Time is all we need.”
“Maybe, but you also need to learn to overcome your habits. That pride is what undid us. You forgot you had five opponents just because two of them were mortals. Did you learn your lesson on that one?” Draxiloth asked from the mirror.
“Yes, I did. My only regret is that Anna and Rapunzel will still die long before we can do anything about them,” Hans replied quietly.
“Good. And they, in the end, are inconsequential. Our bargain was for Elsa. Her life is all that matters. Though I agree that dealing with her also means killing this Maui and Moana. For this, we will need more than just power. We will need guile. You have cunning, which is not the same thing. So, I must teach you. Are you actually willing to learn from me now?” Draxiloth chided.
“Yes. Teach me what I need to destroy them,” Hans demanded firmly of his reflection.
