"Hold on, Jamie," Jack said as he let the wind take them up and up, Jamie clinging to him for dear life.
Jamie tried not to look down, but he eventually gave in to the impulse. "Ohhhhhhh wow that is far to fall." He closed his eyes again, and Jack laughed. "Hey, eyes on me. Not too far now. I see his cloud." Jamie trained his frightened brown eyes on Jack's face, the perpetual grin he wore while he was flying high over everything, and he felt more brave. "What happened to that boy I knew who loved to fly, eh?" Jack teased him, but he was truly curious. How could a person change so much in just eight years? He'd been around for hundreds, and it seemed he'd stayed frozen in a state of boyhood, until tonight at least. "He got scared of dying, I think," Jamie replied, sadly, "along with a million other things." Jack chuckled. "If that's what growing up means, becoming scared of everything, I'm kind of glad I never had to." Jamie laughed. "Yeah, I get that. They keep telling me you eventually come out of the other side in one piece, but I'm not sure if everything I care about will still be there when I do." Jack smiled down at him. "I'll be there, Jamie." That elicited a glowing smile from Jamie, until they hit a sharp gust of wind blowing in another direction, and he had to catch his breath while focusing on keeping his dinner down. When they finally landed safely on the golden dream-sand cloud, Jamie was relieved. Sandman watched them as they approached, and a large golden exclamation mark made of sand appeared over his head. "Hey there, Sandy," Jack said. He waved and smiled at Jack, then greeted Jamie. "Hi again." Jamie smiled. "It's been awhile." Sandy nodded, and a scene of the battle between all of the Guardians and Pitch began to play over his head. When it ended, there was a simple question mark in its place. Jack began to supply an explanation for their visit. "Well, I was wondering, ah, how to say this. . ." Sandy looked at him with a waiting, confused expression. "Right, direct approach is the best, I guess." Jack said, a little flustered. "Have you been giving Jamie dreams about me in, uh, varying states of undress?" "He means naked, Sandy. Like, sexy dreams, with lots of nakedness." Jamie chimed in, trying to help Jack out in his floundering. Sandy's eyes grew comically wide and he put a hand over his mouth, looking a little scandalized and shaking his head. He pointed at himself and shook his head again, crossing his hands over each other in a 'no way' gesture. "Right, that's not your thing." Jack said. "That's what I thought, but, then, who else makes dreams?" Sandy looked at him a little amused and pointed at Jamie. He nodded to Jamie, meeting his eyes and a number appeared above his head, 16, with a question mark behind it. Jamie nodded. "Yep, just turned sixteen about a week ago actually." Sandy looked at Jack pointedly. "I know, adults make their own dreams, not your area of expertise. But the thing is, he made drawings from the memories of these dreams, and they were amazingly accurate. But he's never seen me naked, so how is that possible?" Sandy looked at Jamie for a few moments while he thought, then a light-bulb appeared, then a question mark, while Sandy tapped his head, winked and pointed at Jamie. Jamie grinned and laughed. "Good guess," he said, interpreting Sandy's charades. Sandy gave him the thumbs up. "That would have to be a pretty insanely good guess. Not likely," Jack pointed out. Sandy went into his thinking pose, and then another light-bulb appeared. Drops of water fell on his head as he whistled and pretended to wash himself, then a tree limb over his head and binoculars in his hands. "Okay, that is just silly. First of all, I don't live in a house. Second of all, back me up here, Jamie does not spy on people taking showers.” Jamie emphatically nodded on that count. “Thirdly. . . I, uh, don't take showers." Jamie and Sandy both looked at Jack with horrified expressions on their faces. Sandy pointed at Jack and pinched his nose, waving the air in front of him. "Dude, really. And under that hoodie too? How many years has it been?" Jamie laughed, clearly far more amused with this than Jack would have preferred. "Like three-hundred?" Jack shrugged. "I never get hot, and I don't sweat. I'm always cold. Besides, I kind of have this thing about water. . ." He frowned. "Yeah, but, you are due for a bath, Jack. That's ridiculous. I'm stripping you down as soon as we get back if I have to drag you into the shower myself." Sandy nodded and clapped for Jamie. "Okay, anyway, back to the matter at hand, is there anyone you can think of, Sandy, who can make dreams and put them in someone's head?" Sandman looked worried as he thought of the only other possibility that it could be. His dream sand formed a picture of Pitch Black, and he shuddered. "No, that's not possible. We defeated him. We left him underground being guarded by his own night mares," Jack insisted. "Besides, he only makes bad dreams, not pleasant ones." "Anything is possible, Jack," Jamie said. "Especially after Pitch got a taste of dream sand. Maybe he defeated his own fear and found a way to reform his night mares into whatever he wanted me to dream." "Even assuming all of that were true, why those dreams? Why target you?" Jamie pondered it. "Maybe he wanted to get to you. He's smart and manipulative. He saw how close we were. He knows you're smart too. He knew you'd figure it out. Maybe he just wants you to come down there, to see if you'll free him." Jack shook his head. "I won't do it, ever. But if he's manipulating your dreams, I have to stop it." Jamie grinned. "Just like old times, huh?" Jack looked at him, confused at first, then realized what he meant. He was there to help, however he could. They would face it together. Jack nodded. "Two heads are better than one. If he tries some kind of mind tricks, I could use the backup." Jamie smiled. "Glad to help."While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
