Whew, long story short I spent last two weeks fighting against my internet provider (new one now), a stupid teacher (I own an internationally-recognized certification now) and a hard test (see #2) which leaves surprisingly little time for writing, even if reviewing and correcting miscellaneous errata. Let's resume where we left off and thank you everyone for your patience.
Too tired to get deep sleep, she just fell into a shallow slumber and it wasn’t long before she started dreaming: she was graduating from a rather prestigious university as the first of her class and generation, and asked to speak at the event. She just let out the usual boring speech about hard work and how she couldn’t have done it without her family backing her up and stuff, yet one detail of her speech surprised her.
“And specially, I couldn’t have done it without a very, very special person for me, Benjamin Tennyson, please come over here!” said the dream Gwen who seemed to be on her early twenties, calling a Benjamin the same age she was, dressed in a full black tuxedo; “his unwavering support thru the hardest times of my life has brought me to where I am now, and I take this chance to happily announce everyone that we’re in love, engaged and soon gonna be married!” she continued the speech as she hugged him, whom happily embraced and kissed her.
Needless to say, the shock forced Gwen to snap out of the dream, and when she came back to reality she found herself in a quite odd position, specifically she was hugging Ben from behind with arms and legs and rubbing against him; he however seemed to be still asleep, which was good since Gwen was pretty close to yelling her lungs out while she fully regained consciousness.
“Oh my god just what the hell I’m doing? And what was that dream all about?” she asked herself still in shock as she returned to her side of the bed.
A few moments later, she was able to regain calm and think straight once again, she started tracking back all she done that day: “I was tired from the fight after all, and I got whacked on the head a couple times, so that must have messed up my nerve system a bit, yeah that’s what probably happened, it’s not like I’m in love with Ben or anything” she said to herself as she quietly turned her back to her cousin.
“I mean, what kind of girl would possibly be in love with him? She would have to be really desperate to take THAT as some excuse of a boyfriend, he’s reckless and totally lacks manners, he’s not considerate and…” she sighed, realizing she didn’t really mean most of that; “well, he tries to hide it but I know he really cares for me, he can also be really nice when he wants to, I just wish he wanted to more often than twice a year, I know he has a soft spot, just he doesn’t like to show it… is he really THAT bad?” passed thru Gwen’s head as she slowly fell asleep again.
Ben’s dream was nowhere nearly as mature or revealing as Gwen’s was, it was basically him transforming into a plethora of aliens at will and mopping the floor with several enemies, from the bounty hunters to Billgax, passing thru Charmcaster and Doctor Animo, he just kept fighting and fighting. “Take that!” he yelled as he kicked thru the air and saw Billgax falling down in slow motion
It wasn’t long tho, for his dream to take a kind of grim turn, for his enemies started ganking on him and all of a sudden he was overwhelmed by them; he tried to take on as many at a time as he could, but they were simply too many. It seemed like he was done for, until a bolt of lightning crossed the sky, forcibly pushing back half of his aggressors in a blast of bluish light.
“Get away from Ben you freaks!” he heard from a side, and saw Gwen in her lucky girl attire, her magic book hovering in front of her and several boulders hovering midair right next, ready to be shot at whoever didn’t get the message. In the blink of an eye both of them sent all of the contenders running for cover to avoid further ass kicking. He finally resumed human form and sat on the floor, panting for breath.
“Are you ok Ben?” she asked worried after looking at a couple injuries he had taken.
“Yeah, it’s nothing…” he replied as he tried his best to conceal them.
“Here, I’ll make them feel better” she started casting a healing spell that slowly mended the wounds. It wasn’t long before most of the scratched and bruises were completely invisible; “and now for the spell to be complete… this” she continued as she kissed Ben in the cheek, right where the wound used to be, making him blush; “consider it a good luck charm, so you don’t get your butt kicked next time!” she concluded as she winked an eye; Ben slowly held on his cheek, as he felt his heart pumping faster, longing for the soft sensation of Gwen’s lips.
“And… if it’s good luck… can I please… get another one?” Ben asked as he looked away, slightly blushing.
“It doesn’t work that way you dummy! More charms won’t make you any luckier!” you could tell Gwen was amused with the teasing.
“Ok… I get it… I just…”
“However” she interrupted; “if what you want is another kiss, I think we can work that out! Hey, the charm must be working already, since you’re lucky enough to choose where you want it! Limited time offer!” she said in a seductive tone, and seemingly enjoying watching Ben blush.
“So… could I please…” Ben said as he slowly approached Gwen.
“Yes?” she replied as she caressed his face, a gentle smile on her own that invited him to continue as she glared into his eyes, a reassuring look on her face that said she was fine with whatever he wanted to do. It wasn’t long before both of them got what they wanted, and slowly kissed each other…
“What? Where? When? Why? What the… oh man just a dream, thank god!” Ben exclaimed as he rudely woke up kicking a fuss as usual, just that this time Gwen was so heavily asleep from the tiresome battle she didn’t even notice him; “whoa, talking about strange dreams, I guess I really shouldn’t have ate that giant burger…” he continued talking to himself as he slowly returned to his senses, his palm up his stomach even if it didn’t hurt.
Ben was not exactly known for his superb analytic skills, so he did not go thru as much of a track back as Gwen did. He however did try to figure out the dream and what was it all about. “Gwen and me kissing? Yeah right, just some random nightmare, I bet I won’t have it again if I stop eating strange stuff at night and fighting so much… I mean, who would want to kiss her? She’s not like Kai at all” he thought as he laid back again, his hands crossed behind his head as he remembered Kai Green, the girl he used to have a crush on back at New Mexico.
“Yeah, now THAT is some girl I’d like to kiss; cute, nice and… well, she was kind of… I mean, after all that hard work I went thru just to rescue her she wants me as some kind of alien pet? What in the world was wrong with her!?” he thought as he remembered the occasion in more detail; “and well… Gwen DID stand for me that time… she also said there was only one thing I needed to know about girls, I wish she told me what it was” he concluded as the surge of adrenaline subsided and he started to get drowsy again.
The rest of the night went by more or less normal; at the very least as normal as it gets with a boy that can morph into alien forms of life at will and a girl who can cast an array of magical spells at any given time; both of them were able to get some more sleep, and for their own luck (be it good or bad, impossible to tell) they did not wake up at the same time, otherwise a lot of questioning about what were they dreaming about would have taken place, although it might have fast-forwarded the conclusion of the chapter… or disrupted the finale? That’s anyone’s guess really.
“Wakey, wakey sleepyheads! I’ll be going down in 15 minutes, so make sure you’re ready for some action when I get there!” Astrid yelled in the speaker system, forcing Ben and Gwen to wake up to somewhat of a shock: seemingly, they fell asleep tightly holding on each other without even noticing.
“Gah!” Ben yelled as he hastily tossed his cousin away
“What do you think you’re doing?” Gwen exclaimed, more shocked than actually upset
“Me? You were the one who couldn’t keep her hands off!” as he said this he hastily ran his hands over his sleeves, as though shaking dust off.
“Just… make sure you don’t rub your stench on me” she told him in a quiet tone.
“I took a shower, you should be ok” he answered as he slowly calmed down, realizing the fact that he actually liked being in Gwen’s arms.
“I guess we should dress up before Astrid comes”
“Sounds like a plan, yeah; you do it here, I’ll take the bathroom, let me know when you’re finished ok?”
“Ok… I guess” said a rather impressed Gwen, who was absolutely not expecting Ben’s sudden display of manners; “whoa, where did THAT come from?” she asked herself as she slowly undressed up to her underwear and took clean clothes from her luggage, she decided not to give it too much thought and try to enjoy that day.
“Maybe today will be better” both of them whispered to themselves at the same time, unaware of the fact both were thinking alike.
“How was your first night here?” Astrid said in her usual joyful voice as she opened the metallic door, finding Gwen adding the final touches to her outfit; and where is Ben?” she asked.
“He’s in the bathroom, hey Ben! You can come out now!” Gwen yelled to her cousin.
“Took you long enough” said Ben as he stepped out of the bathroom on his usual attire.
“Well, looking this good ain’t free Ben!” Astrid responded as she winked an eye and blew a kiss, unwarily provoking Gwen’s jealousy that triggered seemingly instinctively.
“So what’s on the agenda for today?” she interrupted, slightly pushing Astrid to a side .
“Well, first we have breakfast and we can talk about how was your stay here, then whatever you guys feel like! You don’t need a tight schedule or an agenda to follow 24/7 Gwen, learn to go with the flow!”
“I’ve been telling her that since the very first day I met her” Ben said in his classic “I told you so” tone.
“And Ben, it wouldn’t hurt to plan your next move from time to time, you can’t take your whole life so lightly, both of you could learn a lot from each other!”
Astrid headed out to the door while she was still finishing her last sentence, and both cousins took it as a sign to follow her to the mess hall. As they made their way into the cafeteria-style building, the same automated voice greeted them as they picked breakfast
“I’ll pick first since you did it last night” Gwen announced.
“Yeah, go for it” Ben responded quiet and seemingly absent-mindedly.
“And if you think that… wait, did you actually say go for it?” Gwen already had her speech, but was shocked not to need any convincing.
“What do you want, a confirmation e-mail? Pick your breakfast so I can pick mine” he replied seemingly more focused
“Ok… thank you I guess? Now let’s see… that burger you had last night actually looked tasty, just kind of overloaded. I just want a regular hamburger with all but onions, and don’t add any grease please!”
“Yeah I think it was kind of heavy” Ben said as he slid his card thru the reader; “I’ll have that lettuce thing you ate for dinner, I need to get the weird stuff out of my system”
“Weird stuff? Did you get sick Ben?” Astrid asked worried.
“Not really sick, just had a bit of trouble digesting all that stuff and kinda had a nightmare” he answered without thinking too much, causing a small shock in Gwen.
“A nightmare… nah, it can’t be possible” thought the red-headed girl as she inputted the order for Ben’s breakfast, and told him to slide his card one more time.
Astrid went for the basics, just fried eggs with some bacon on the side and a hot cup of black coffee; while simple, it did lots to help starting a new day; “so Ben, care to tell me some about that nightmare you had? Anything you can remember?” inquisitive as ever, she wondered if she could get any more information to help her job.
“Oh yeah, the nightmare… right…” Ben started mumbling uneasy as he scratched the back of his head; “well, it’s not like a scary nightmare or anything, now that you mention it I can’t even remember! I just kind of woke up in the middle of the night, that’s all, nothing to worry about”
“Ok, if you say so then it must be true! If you need help with that however, feel free to talk to me!” Astrid concluded as she took a sip from her cup of coffee. “And on a completely different topic (not as different as she might think) you two seem to be getting along much better now! Did that match help? I’ve always said the best way to get rid of tension is detonating it!”
“Yeah that… kind of helped” Gwen said relaxed; “it was fun and all but I don’t think we want to be doing that in the near future”
“Did the princess break her nails?” Ben asked sarcastically
“Did the brave knight bust his head?” she answered as she poked Ben between the ribs, making him yell a loud “ouch”; curiously enough they didn’t get mad at each other, but instead took the joke and started laughing, and Ben finally agreed another fight was not a good option at that time.
“Very well! I’m happy to see this is starting to work out, but like I said, that depends entirely of you two. Now I hate being a spoilsport so I’ll be on my way, do as you wish! Oh and Ben, it would be so kind and sweet from you to take Gwen to the underground garden, who knows, you might find something you like! And Gwen, it would be great for you to join Ben in the super sumo battle 3KO. It’s not in shops yet but I have my own tricks!” Astrid said as some kind of goodbye advice, and shortly after that, she was gone.
“Very well… so we’re back to square one” Gwen remarked the obvious; “I guess the fairest way is to flip a coin and see who…”
“Don’t bother” Ben interrupted; “we can go to your garden thing first”
“Oh my god, are you sure? Ok who are you and what you did with Ben?” she said as she started poking on his forehead.
“Hey! Cut that out!” Ben said not particularly upset as he held on her wrist; “I need to lay down a bit to digest the food, plus I need some time to think”
“You of all people, need some time to think? Ok now you’re scaring me, really who are you and what you did with the real Ben?”
“Hurry up before I change my mind!” Ben threatened, knowing however that he wasn’t going to; for some reason he felt being kind to Gwen was the right thing to do at that time, so both of them headed towards the metallic door that leaded to the underground garden, and after sliding both cards thru the readers it opened.
