Once everything was still and quiet Momo emerged from his hiding place beneath the horn of Appa’s saddle. His big furry friend was on his side and groaning. His hairless friends were a few feet away. He pulled on their hair and slapped their faces before quickly jumping away expecting the swat that usually came. When it didn’t come he continued trying to wake them.
Momo retreated to the trees when the strangers showed up. He armed himself with rocks and nuts and began throwing them at all who approached his injured companions.
Bingwen, raised his eyebrow but gathered his bag and ordered his assistants to accompany him to the area where the landing party was gathering. As a senior naval doctor stationed in the homeland he rarely dealt with anything other than training mishaps and venereal disease. It would be interesting to see what effects a lightning strike and a rapid unplanned descent from the heavens had on the human body.
“Princess, I will need to use the amphibious craft to transport the bison and a crew to man it,” Mu said dryly.
“Whatever,” Azula exhaled rolling her eyes at the ship’s veterinary officer. Mu was Mai’s cousin and that sparkling personality ran in the family.
It was easy to follow path of broken trees left by the falling bison. The creature was stirring so Mu took out his bow and arrow. He took aim at Appa’s largest wound and inhaled deeply. He muttered a quick apology as he let the first projectile fly, “I’m sorry to add to your injuries but this is necessary.”
Appa roared as his damaged flesh was pierced but he soon grew quiet as the opium and cannabis oil mixture dripped from the center of the slender bamboo arrow into his body. Mu waited until the animal was completely quiet before approaching. As an added precaution he pushed a pot of specially formulated incense to a point where the breeze would guide it to the bison’s nose.
“Would you hurry! The animal is not the priority. I just need to make sure he will not impede our capture of the Avatar,” Azula demanded impatiently.
Ignoring Azula’s repeated demands that he hurry Mu waited the full hour needed before pulling the empty pot back. He and his assistants took their time cleaning Appa’s wounds with a blend of antiseptic and painkiller. He stitched the worse ones then applied an ointment with the same properties over much of the animal. Once the veterinarian was satisfied Appa could be safely moved he had the transport cart pulled towards them. He borrowed one of Azula’s Dai Li agents and asked that he carefully change the slope of the land to slide the bison onto the transport.
After the large animal was cleared, Bingwen moved in to inspect the humans. He was expecting the worse but the state of his patients surprised him. All three were unconscious, had multiple cuts, scrapes, bumps and bruises but no limbs were bent at odd angles. The boy and girl had thrown their arms around the Avatar to protect him and remained in that position. The Avatar had several bruising on his torso and possible broken ribs. The other boy had a sprained wrist and dislocated shoulder. The girl was covered in bruises. He didn’t see indicators of sprains or dislocations that didn’t mean she didn’t have internal injuries.
The elderly doctor managed to separate them and complete the exam with Prince Zuko hovering over his shoulder and something chirping and throwing acorns from overhead. It was hard to believe that the three sleeping youths were the fierce opponents who had just invaded their nation. They were the same age his grandchildren. The elderly doctor knew appearances could be deceiving but he still felt sorry for them.
There was nothing he could do to change their fate, but perhaps he could grant them an extra night of freedom. “Princess, all three of them are unstable, especially the Avatar. I don’t recommend moving him just yet,” Bingwen advised honestly.
“Fine, well make camp here,” Azula said before ordering, “Fetch a messenger hawk and writing materials. Someone find whatever is making that noise and throwing those acorns.”
One man ran back to the ship and several others darted towards the trees.
“I know a certain little boy who is very angry his Aunt Ty Lee missed his birthday party but managed to come to his uncle’s stupid wedding,” Mu commented while watching the flying lemur send a small branch into a face of one his pursuers.
Ty Lee wasted no time leaping into the trees after Momo and bouncing from limb to limb after him. He wasn’t expecting the human to leap into the trees or that any hairless, wingless creature other than Aang would be able to keep up with him while dodging whatever he could find to throw at him. He could fly but she was larger, determined, and knew chi blocking.
After a brief chase he too was captured.
They were still at the site where the bison fell when a different messenger hawk returned hours later.
Return immediately. They invaded my city; as long as the Avatar doesn’t die I don’t care what happens to his companions or the bison. Servants will meet you at the port at dawn.
“Put the girl in my room,” Zuko interjected. He didn’t stay to watch as the human prisoners were roughly awakened, hefted to their feet and dragged towards the ship.
Zuko was returning from the stables when he saw Katara being led across the deck with the other prisoners, “Where are you taking her? I ordered that she be delivered to my room.”
“Prince Zuko, Princess Azula ordered that she be placed in the brig. She was the only member of the royal family who sailed with us from the harbor so we must prioritize her orders,” the soldier said smugly.
“So does that mean you should disobey my order as Crown Prince?” Zuko asked dangerously.
“No Prince Zuko, I am merely following protocol and chain of command,” the soldier replied.
Zuko wasn’t fooled by his words. He was one of the men he’d overheard drawing lots to determine the order in which he’d get to have the Waterbender. “Put the girl in my room or else you will not have to worry about protocol or chain of command much longer.”
“Prince Zuko! We have received another message from your father,” a soldier cried running towards him.
Zuko turned to look at the message. The soldier he’d ordered to place Katara in his rooms continued across deck to the set of stairs closest to dungeons and away from his quarters.
Zuko stalked across the deck and lobbed a large fireball at the man’s torso. He staggered backwards slapping at the flames. Zuko grabbed Katara’s chains and yanked them hard enough to halt her pitiful attempts at putting out the burning man’s flames. When he fell Zuko stood over him, “Next time I tell you to do something do not question me.”
The man pushed himself into a bow before passing out and Zuko casually ordered one of the onlooking soldiers to put Katara in his room. This one obeyed without question. As an afterthought he said that if someone wanted to take the disrespectful fool to the medical ward they would not be punished.
Zuko quickly penned a response to his father and gave it to the messenger. He snorted in disgust at the meaning of his father’s last sentence - Several important men are awaiting the arrival of the prisoners, would the room used for the leader of the Kyoshi warriors suffice?
Zuko had been a child when he was exiled. He had seen that room, but since it was near the concubine housing he was unaware of its true purpose. He had been at home for almost a month when he realized that many men going to that area of the palace did not maintain a concubine on the grounds. He was not in a position to do more for the leader of the Kyoshi warriors other than get her paperwork mixed in with the names of those to be transferred to the Boiling Rock.
He would not let the Waterbender be placed there. He doubted a second paperwork error in such a short time would be considered a mere accident.
