After her last class of the day let out Layla set out for the lake to meet Icy. She had just exited the main building and was walking down the steps to the quad when she heard a familiar voice calling her name.
"Hey Layla! Wait up!"
She glanced back over her shoulder and saw Musa starting down the steps toward her. What bad timing! Musa was Layla's best friend, and any other time she'd love to spend some time hanging out with her before dinner, but with Icy waiting for her down at the lake she couldn't really afford the time to deal with her. Still, she couldn't just give her best friend the brush-off, so she slowed down to let Musa catch up with her. She smiled warmly, hoping the music fairy wouldn't notice anything amiss.
"Hey Musa. What's up?"
Musa grinned back at her as she fell in beside the water fairy.
"I was just gonna head into town and check out the latest music releases. You wanna come with?"
Layla shook her head regretfully.
"I can't. I promised to meet someone down at the lake after classes."
Musa's grin grew even broader.
"Down at the lake, huh? Sounds romantic. Going to see Prince Nabu?"
Layla flinched as though someone had punched her in the chest.
"No, not Nabu. Someone else."
Musa's eyebrows rose in surprise.
"Well, it's not another guy, is it? You're not cheating on him, are you?"
Layla closed her eyes and shook her head as they crossed the quad, though for some reason she felt uneasy about saying no to that last question.
"No, it's not a guy. I'm just going to meet a friend."
Musa felt relieved to know it wasn't a guy, but she was becoming increasingly curious about just who Layla was going to meet. She knew it wasn't her, and if it had been any other member of the Winx Club she felt sure Layla would have told her straight off.
"So who's this friend you're going to meet then?"
Layla looked straight ahead.
"It's nobody, okay? Don't worry about it."
Musa gave her a hurt look.
"What, so you suddenly don't trust me anymore? Come on Layla. Who're you going to meet?"
Layla was on the verge of saying 'It's none of your business' when Musa's words struck home. 'Suddenly you don't trust me anymore?' She sighed and lowered her head.
"It's Icy, okay? I'm going to see Icy."
Musa stepped in front of Layla and put her hands on her shoulders to stop her.
"Whoa! Time out! You're going to see Icy? Since when do you and her hang out?"
Layla looked her friend in the eye. She didn't feel great about what she was admitting, but she knew she wasn't doing anything wrong.
"Since today. She tracked me down between classes wanting to talk. I agreed to meet her after school down by the lake."
Musa shook her head in disbelief.
"Why agree to hang out with her at all? That girl's bad news. You know that as well as anyone."
Layla shook her head stubbornly.
"That was the old Icy. Remember, she and her sisters lost their memories. They've got a chance to start over, become better people. Maybe by talking with her I can help her take that chance."
The pig-tailed girl gave her a hard look.
"After the way she cheated to try and steal your victory at the inter-school ice skating competition this weekend? Sounds like the same old Icy to me, memories or no memories."
Layla stared right back at her.
"She's a witch. She goes to Cloud Tower. That's what they teach there. Do whatever it takes to win. That doesn't mean she'll do the same terrible things as last time."
Musa's eyes got harder.
"No. She'll do all new terrible things, and she'll start with you."
Layla laid her hands on her friend's shoulders.
"Musa, she's reaching out to me. Maybe I can help her, be her friend, help her avoid going down that path again. Maybe she will hurt me, but I wouldn't forgive myself if I didn't give her the chance to change."
The music fairy gasped, taken aback by Layla's willingness to put herself at risk to help someone who had been their sworn enemy for years. She gave Layla's shoulders a gentle squeeze.
"Are you sure about this? I could come with you if you want."
Layla shook her head and smiled.
"Thanks, but Icy's only expecting me. I don't want her to think I've betrayed her trust."
She squeezed Musa's shoulders reassuringly.
"Don't worry. I'll be fine. I know how to handle myself."
Musa gave her a worried frown.
"And what if it's a trap? Darcy and Stormy might be there waiting to ambush you."
Layla lifted both of Musa's hands off her shoulders and held them in her own.
"They won't be. I promise you, I'm gonna come back safe from this. I'll see you at dinner, okay?"
Musa gave her a worried look.
"You better. If not we're all gonna be out searching for you."
The black girl gave her friend a big hug.
"Thanks Musa. I'll make sure you don't have to."
Musa reciprocated the hug and smiled at her friend.
"Good. You stay safe now Layla."
Layla gave her a nod.
"I will. See you later."
Musa stood and watched her friend walk out the gate, hoping that this wouldn't turn out to be as big a mistake as it sounded like.
