“Brats,” he said. “Never did know when to back down,” he snorted, and shook his head as he thought to the final, desperate battle that Danny had fought.
Dan finally broke free into the Earth realm, and had been met at the jagged, torn-open sky portal by Danny. The stupid kid was alone, and Skulker almost laughed when he thought back to the angry, determined, but still frightened face of the boy as he faced the man. The ghosts watched over various methods at their disposal: crystal balls, globes, portal viewers, and the like and finally, seeing the two of them side by side, realized exactly how evil Dan Phantom actually was. While ghosts had their own flashes of extra-bodily color, particularly when they were planning their nastiness, Dan Phantom exuded the very essence of himself, which was clearly, pure evil . . . especially when he was in front of Danny.
“I can’t let you do this!” Danny called, and it would have been more intimidating, if his voice hadn’t cracked in the middle of his sentence.
“Ah,” Dan Phantom grinned and advanced on the floating figure of Danny, who backed up, slowly. “Well, if it isn’t my old self. I’d say it’s a pleasure to see you, but that’s going to come later,” he laughed, and had the ghosts actually had blood, it would have gone cold. “And are you really sure you want to do this right now? I was hoping to drop in on our dear family first, before I destroyed you.”
“Don’t touch them!” Danny curled his hands into fists, and raised his hands. “I defeated you once before, I can do it again!”
“Danny, really,” Dan Phantom advanced again, and Danny backed up. “If you’re going to make threats based on historical events, the least you can do is to make correct ones. While you may have tricked me into that thermos . . .” he scowled deeply, and his anger made his glow even stronger. “And believe me, I’m going to get you for that little trick, it was that interfering Clockwork who defeated me by stopping time so all those who love . . .” he looked ill and pulled his lips away from his sharp teeth. “Love you, wouldn’t die their horrible, unnatural, and untimely deaths at my hands. And when I get my hands on him . . .”
“He’s still alive then,” Danny said, and no one missed the relief in his tone.
“He’s alive, and on the run,” Dan said. “But when I’m done destroying this lovely little planet you’ve got here, I’ll find him. It’s just a matter of time.” He laughed at his own joke.
“How did you get away from him anyway?” Danny asked. “You were trapped . . .”
“Danny, Danny, Danny,” Dan sighed and shook his head, disappointed. “Didn’t Plasmius teach you anything? He certainly tried. Remember that little thing called ‘patience’? It goes a long way, believe me. I bided my time, punched and wailed at the inside of the thermos until it finally split open, which freed me.
“Oh, I admit, it took a while, and had I been one of those lesser ghosts, it wouldn’t have happened, but well, you know me,” he grinned and raised his hands, and without warning, a ghostly blast flung Danny backward, through the air. "I don't give up so easily.
“But, enough chit chat and reminiscing. It’s time to pay you back for my imprisonment. I’ll take care of our dear family after this. Where are they anyway?” Dan asked, as Danny recovered and flew at him.
“I locked them in the basement,” Danny said. “You’re not going to get a chance to go after them,” he aimed a blast at Dan, and it just bounced off his chest. Danny aimed another one and combined it with a freeze blast. Ice formed around Dan’s hand, and the blast he’d been preparing to throw withered.
“Very nice, Danny,” he said. “I can see you’ve been practicing,” he pulled his arm back and shot the entire thing at Danny, and in fact, added his own blast to it. It smacked Danny directly in the chest, and he grunted and grabbed his ribs.
“That had to have hurt,” Dan said, and every ghost that watched could tell he was playing with Danny as a particularly cruel cat would a mouse. Danny was hopelessly outmatched, and yet they had to admire his spirit (no pun intended).
“Not as much as this will!” Danny shouted, and made another blast ball, which he chucked at Dan.
“Oh, please,” Dan said, distinctly bored, and with one hand, added size and mass to the icy blast of ectoplasm, and flung it back at Danny. Faster than anyone knew that Danny could move, he threw up a shield, and as the huge mass of ecto-energy hit the shield, he pushed it forward with a mighty effort. The ball bounced off the shield, flew through the air, and smacked into Dan, who flew backward, toward the ghost portal.
Suddenly, they heard a sound from below them, and a huge drill poked up through the ground, and the Fenton RV literally drilled its way to the surface. The top opened, and Maddie Fenton climbed onto the roof of the vehicle, as Jazz, wearing the Fenton Peeler suit, came up out of the hole directly behind the vehicle, and pointed all their weapons at Dan.
