No one had tried to stop her from leaving the city. Even the guards at the outer walls had obliged her. She walked through the last wall feeling dizzy. The ground shook as the wall closed and she fell. Katara gasped in air along with the dirt her face lay in and closed her eyes.
She thought of staying there in the dirt, relaxing her body until her breathing returned to normal. Then she heard a noise and let her eyelids open a slit. Night had fallen. How long had she been laying here? With the very last of her energy she managed to get to the trees, laid under some bushes, and slept.

Something hit Katara's leg. She pulled her knees in, but felt it again.
"Hey!" an annoyed voice said above her. "You can't sleep here."
Katara felt another kick and opened her eyes. A blurry figure stood above her, the sun bright behind his head.
"The wall is open now." He said.
Ignoring him, Katara rose slowly and wobbled toward the road.
"Hey, the wall is this way!"

Appa was not where she left him, and Katara didn't blame him. His whistle was lost and he had probably flown back to the ship. Aang might even be awake by now. She was abandoned here. Exhausted she plopped down against a tree. She would have cried but it hurt to scrunch up her face so she stared at the ground between her feet instead and ignored her thirst.
She held her head in misery thinking of her father, her friends, and Zuko feeling she had been unforgivably let down by all of them until she cried despite the pain.
She thought about how much she missed her father and her friends. Dropping her head back against the tree she relaxed, letting her tears flow from her closed eyes. She thought of her father trying to reassure her on the ship, Aang still unconscious and starting to grow hair. Sokka making jokes about everything and Toph making jokes about him.
She thought about Zuko as he made love to her and the things he had said to her. Finally she let it all go. She was aware of herself and then the tree behind her, which was coursing with water. In her mind it was impossibly tall and had so many branches, twigs, leaves... There were other things besides the tree. Other plant life she couldn't identify using the tree for height or food. There were tiny bugs…
Katara opened her eyes and turned to look at the tree. She couldn't see any bugs.
She finally admitted to herself that she hadn't been abandoned. She had abandoned her friends.

Katara started in the direction she knew the lake was in. There was no way for her to find her friends so her only plan was to find the lake and cross it. With every step she fought hunger and despair, only using her energy to focus on the general direction of the lake to see how close she was.
A commotion jolted her out of her bleak thoughts. She could hear a man pleading for something.
A short distance through some trees she could see him kneeling in front of a red clad soldier pulling on a sack.
"Please," he continued. "It's all we could afford."
The soldier jerked the bag out of the kneeler's hands and he fell forward.
Without thinking Katara stepped into view, enraged.
"What are you doing?" she demanded and reached for the bag but she was grabbed from behind by another soldier.
A wave of déjà vu hit her and she struggled. Her captor chuckled. "Pretty thing if she weren't so dirty."
"Please leave her alone!" The kneeler stood and raised an arm, but the soldier holding the bag swung a fist, aiming a fireball at him.
The kneeler screamed when his hair ignited, running in circles while the soldiers laughed. Katara reached out for any source of water, her captor being the closest. He was big and full of water; it was there in his body, now his arms, and with two quick jerks Katara had drawn it and froze it.
The red giant holding her stared down at her for a telling moment, then started screaming. He tried to pull away and his arms, frozen through, cracked and shattered into pieces. He fell away, still screaming. Katara heard but couldn't dwell on it.
She ran, summoning water from the air, the grass, the trees and put the fire on the circling man's head yet still he screamed because his scalp, ears, and forehead were melted or crispy.
She tried to go to him but the fire starter grabbed her wrist. Instead of pulling away she let him haul her against him.
"A water bender, eh?" His putrid breath choked her as he leaned in to sneer at her. She placed her other hand on his neck. "You'll make a great pet. We'll all want to see how you froze Tan's arms. Where did you get the water, I wonder?"
Finally he stopped talking and started breathing heavily.
"I did it the same way I boiled the water in your body." Katara whispered to him. His eyes bulged, his skin turned red. His grip loosened and he fell away from her.
The other man had stopped screaming. It was too late for the kneeler, and Katara couldn't breathe. Five more soldiers stood a few yards away, staring at their leader while she stared at their victim. Frantic Katara reached out to find more water.
There was a well behind her. The motions were easy, and a wall of water surrounded her. The massive amount of water both surprised and exhilarated her, reminding her of how helpless she was even though she had the power to wield it. The wall fell and rose in ribbons around her. The five soldiers rounded her as the new leader screamed, "Spread out!"
Together they shot streams of fire at her wall and she felt the heat lick through. A step here, a balanced arch in this direction and the ribbons of water became razors of thick ice. The razors reformed as quickly as their shots melted it so they banded together to combine their fire, shooting as fast as they could to penetrate the ice.
Pirouetting, Katara shot ice picks at them like arrows. Two fell screaming. One ran. The last two, one the self-designated leader, stared. The leader clenched his first, snarled until they erupted in flames, engulfing his arms, his torso, his head until his entire body was on fire.
He roared and strode towards the ice. The razors melted when he met them. He grinned as he stepped through them. He gave another roar and Katara shuddered, but she was prepared. She moved left but he swung his arms down and a circle of flame surrounded her.
Glaring at him she let her arms fall slowly as if surrendering. His expression lit with victory. The water fell over and around them, extinguishing him. When he realized that he was engulfed in water he panicked, sucking for air and drowned. The wave seeped slowly into the ground and he lay still. Katara caught her breath but tensed again when she noticed the last man standing.
Moving her foot in a circle on the ground she raised her arms but he backed away, hands up in surrender.
"I just want to get them out of here." He said nodding to the two men who were bandaging each other up now that the ice picks had melted.
Katara glared but nodded. "Do it."
People started creeping from their houses to see the soldiers leave, but she kept up her guard until the rhinos they had come on could no longer be seen.

Mai found herself satisfied, lying face down on her bed contemplating her future. Things had moved quickly. Azula had barely come out of her room since Zuko carried her there and he picked up the mantle of leadership as if he'd always been in charge.
Enraged that the two Dai-li following Katara had simply left her when she exited the city, Zuko had executed them before their comrades even knew what was happening. He hung their charred black and green uniforms on the wall above the throne, daring any of the other Dai-li to leave their posts or rebel against the Fire Nation.
His excuse was that it was necessary to keep the Dai-li in line, but Mai thought that was only a convenient by product. She suspected he had momentarily lost it just like Katara had, soaking in the years of rage and disappointment, and lashing out at the lack of respect the two soldiers had shown him by abandoning their task.
That, and they had left Katara alone. Sure, she was the most terrifying bender Mai had ever seen, even next to Azula, but Zuko wanted her protected and now he didn't know where she was or where she was going.
Intended or not, the Dai-li were cautious and the city was now organized and policed if not peaceful and now he was considering how to locate Katara before deciding whether or not to follow his father's orders which involved adding other Earth Kingdom cities to Ba-sing-se.
Mai's body felt blissfully exhausted. Zuko lay partially on top of her and his weight was comforting.
"Where will you start?" Mai asked.
"I know a bounty hunter. I'll start with her and go from there." His breath was hot on the back of her neck and he was rubbing absent minded circles in her upturned palm.
"Why not just wait for the reports you've been getting?" There had been several small bands of Fire Nation soldiers showing up in Ba-Sing-Se, complaining that they'd been run out of whatever city or village they'd been inhabiting by a water bender and some earth benders.
"I think she's breaking her people up into troops. Some here, some there. I want to know where she is and I want to know as much about her as I can before I go after her."
"You're worried about her? That maybe she's carrying your child?"
"I'm worried about her whether or not she's pregnant, Mai. I need her to be safe and I need her to know that I didn't mean anything I said in the throne room. That I was just trying to undermine Azula and get her out of there."
Mai thought for a while, conflicted.
"Zuko, do you love me?"
Silence. Was that a choking noise?
"Do you love her?"
More silence. Did he fall asleep?
"Neither of us?" she whispered, not even really to him. If someone had told her Zuko could kill two men without hesitation a couple weeks ago she would have laughed. Maybe he was more like his father than she thought.
"I'm not sure I know what love is." he whispered back. "It's confusing."
"She thinks you were going to let her die, and she's obviously against Fire Nation rule. She might not be too happy to see you."
"I know."
"What are you going to do if you find her?"
"I don't know. She seemed so cold when she left. I just want to know she's okay."
The spark of fear she'd felt fizzled out. "You do love her," she whispered in relief, suddenly absolutely sure that he loved her too. Then, "What if she's pregnant?"
"It's not like it never happens."
"Not to a prince. And her reputation will be ruined if she has a child at her skirts."
He didn't reply.
"What are you thinking?"
"All I wanted was father's approval and fought for it for three years. Now I communicate with him on a daily basis. I could go home and have a real conversation with him. But Uncle is sitting in a cell after giving up his life to travel with me. The Avatar could pop up any moment and ruin everything, and I'm not so sure I don't want him to."
Mai wrinkled her nose. "What does that have to do with Katara being pregnant?"
"Everything." Zuko whispered.
"Are you thinking of turning traitor?"
"Would you try to stop me?"
"Anything would be a relief from the boredom, so no. But Azula would." Mai relaxed and asked, "Is there any difference between us?"
"What do you mean?"
"If you were blindfolded would you know which of us was warming your bed?"
"Of course."
"Tell me the difference." Mai felt Zuko's hand slide over her rear and between her legs. His fingers slid easily into her soaked sex. She sighed in pleasure while he slid them lazily in and out of her body.
"Do you want me to tell you what she looks like again?"
Mai blushed because she'd told him she found Katara exotic.
"No," she said, her voice husky. "Anyone can look at us and see the difference. I want to know something deeper."
"Deeper?" He pushed his fingers all the way inside her and she moaned into her pillow. He continued the massage as he explained.
"You are on your stomach because you crawled onto this bed and put yourself there." He kissed the back of her neck. "I'm behind you because you asked me to take you this way." Another kiss behind her ear.
"Katara," her name made his voice thick. "Wouldn't have done any of those things. I could shove her onto the bed, pull her arms behind her, and hold her down while I took her." He nipped at her ear before finishing with, "and she would love it."
Mai moved against his fingers encouraging him to continue, almost there.
"She's shy?" she asked breathless.
Zuko let out a short laugh. "No, not shy. She's definitely not shy, but she likes it a little rough."
Mai trembled and came in his hand. Zuko dropped kisses on her shoulder and neck and continued until every shutter had been wrung from her.
