Chapter 5
Sokka groaned when he felt the warmth of the sun shine down on his face. He cracked open his right eye and winced when he was temporarily blinded. He rubbed his eyes and blinked rapidly letting his eyes adjust to the new light. He gasped when he saw that he was sitting in a grassy clearing. The sky was an unnatural bright blue and a gentle breeze blew the grass around playfully.
“Wh…Where am I?”
“You are finally awake, Sokka,” spoke a female voice from behind him causing him to jump in surprise. Sokka turned around and his eyes widened in shock and confusion.
“Mom?”
She smiled, nodded and said, “It is good to see you again, Sokka.”
The Water Tribe Teen shot up from the ground and embraced the familiar body that he used to hug so long ago.
“I’m so glad you are still alive. Katara and I thought you were dead. You can home with us now.”
She chuckled softly, patted Sokka on the head and said, “I am dead, Sokka.”
Sokka tensed in the embrace for a few seconds before slowly pulling away; one question buzzing around his head endlessly.
“Am…am I dead?”
“No son.”
Sokka looked confused and asked quietly, “So why am I here with you?”
“There is something we need to discuss. Follow me.”
The image of his mother walked gracefully through the field until they came to a small white gazebo on top of a hill. She led him to it and took a seat on the bench. She patted the seat next to her and Sokka sat down; his hands clenched on his knees.
There was a brief silence the sound of the breeze blowing through the gazebo disrupting the silence before Sokka asked, “What happened to me? Why am I here?”
“You are here because you choose to be. You do not remember because you suppressed the memories when you fell unconscious.”
“Why?”
“I can not tell you why. My purpose is to keep you from this plane.”
“What if I don’t want to go back?”
“You can not stay here. You are needed elsewhere, my son.”
“Nobody needs me. I don’t have any bending skills and I am also a poor warrior. I’m a disgrace to my family and tribe.”
“That is not true, Sokka. You are very much needed. Katara needs you. Aang needs you. The person you least expect needs you.”
“How do you know about Aang? And who is this person who needs me?” asked Sokka looking up at the image of his mom in confusion.
“That is not important now. What is important is that you wake up. When you do you will remember what has happened to you, but you must remember to be brave and you must be strong. There is someone who cares for you a lot, but they do not know it yet. Their love will be the one to help you as will your love help them.”
“I don’t understand, mom.”
“You will when you wake up.”
“You keep saying that,” replied Sokka suddenly angry.
“Just wake up,”
“I don’t want to wake up,” he argued trying to stand up but realizing he couldn’t; his body felt too heavy and a sharp pain ran through him.
“What…What’s going on?”
“Wake up…Wake up.”
Sokka looked up at where his mother was sitting; eyes wide with fear as he noticed that she was fading.
“Mom?”
“Wake up,” she mouthed; no voice coming from her moving lips.
“What?”
“WAKE UP!!!”
Sokka’s body jerked and he gasped as he stared wide eyed up at a metal ceiling.
“Finally you’re awake,” spoke a male voice off to the side.
Sokka vaguely registered the person moving toward them, however, when he felt a hand touch his shoulder he jerked away and scrambled toward the wall huddling in the corner.
“Please don’t hurt me.”
Sokka’s blue eyes were wide with fear.
Zuko stepped forward reaching out to the Water Tribe boy but stopped when the other let out a loud whimper and shielded himself.
“Stop being difficult,” growled Zuko before roughly grabbing Sokka by the arm and dragging him away from the wall.
Sokka let out a bloodcurdling scream as he thrashed around trying to get away from Zuko.
The door burst open and Iroh rushed inside followed by several other guards.
“Zuko, what is going on?” demanded the Iroh.
Zuko let go of the Water Tribe teen and looked at his uncle, “I just grabbed him and he started screaming.”
Iroh pushed pass Zuko, ignoring Sokka’s screams and pressed his fingers into Sokka’s neck causing the boy to slip unconscious.
“Why did you do that?” asked Zuko irritated.
Iroh signaled the guards to leave. Once the door closed behind them he turned to his nephew and said, “You can not just attack him. He’s been with Zhao so it’s most likely that he has experienced some kind of abuse.”
Zuko’s body tensed and whispered, “I didn’t know.”
“Sometimes you have to look pass the physical wounds to see when someone is truly hurting. I’m going to examine him and see the extent of his wounds. Why don’t you wait outside and I’ll call you when I am done.”
Zuko hesitated before turning and leaving the room closing the door softly behind him.
Iroh turned back to the unconscious boy and moved him to the bed. He then began to inspect the boy’s body taking in the damage. There were rope burns on his wrists and ankles, his face had a dark, black bruise. He spotted a large gash on the tan neck as if something had taken a chunk out of the flesh. To his surprise most of the young body was unharmed he was about to get up and go talk to Zuko when he spotted faded red on the inner thighs. Iroh frowned and gently turned him onto his stomach and his eyes widened when he saw more of the dried blood on the boy’s behind and legs.
“Zhao, you bastard,” he muttered before turning the Water Tribe teen back onto his back. Iroh quickly went to the door and called one of the guards ordering him to bring warm food and tea. When the guard returned with a tray filled with hot food he locked the door and placed the tray on the table. Iroh pulled a small bottle from his robes and popped open the top. A strong odor filled the room and the ex-general slowly moved the bottle under the unconscious boy’s nose. There was a slight movement from the body before the blue eyes fluttered blinking a couple of times revealing confusion and fear.
“Don’t sit up son. Just relax and listen to my voice,” said Iroh in a soothing voice.
Sokka turned and looked up at Iroh; relief evident on his face when he saw the old man.
“It’s you.”
“Before we talk would you like some food?”
Sokka nodded slowly and Iroh got up bringing over the tray of food and placing it on the boy’s lap.
“Eat as much as you can.”
Sokka picked up the fork and slowly picked at the food until his stomach started to protest and he pushed the tray away.
Iroh noticed that most of the food was still there.
“Are you sure you can’t eat anymore?”
Sokka nodded and then asked, “Where am I? What happened to me?”
