Katara stared at the floor as he stared at her. She was sure he would send her home for something she said at the meal. She welcomed the words from him. She wanted to get away from him as fast as possible.
“Why are you here?”
Katara raise her head to stare into his eyes.
“I know it is not for the honor to bear my child. You are sorely lacking in manners.”
“As are you, Emperor.”
Zuko continued to stare into her eyes in a challenge. She refused to back down even when he took a few steps and pressed his body into hers. He could feel her breathing rapidly and see the sweat on the tops of her breasts as her anxiety rose. His eyes returned to hers and he noticed her puzzled expression. Her hands rose as if she would try to push him away. He quickly grabbed them and she began to struggle against him.
“You are cunning attaching yourself to my sister’s advisor. He is taken by your beauty but he is cunning himself and can make you dependant on him.”
“I do need him or you.” She tried to push him away only to have him secure her hands on the table behind her. A small-frustrated groan escaped her.
“You will use him for what you want.”
“What do you think that I want?” Katara gave up trying to get free of his crushing grip and stared up at him.
“Why are you here?”
Katara sighed. “I am here for Toph. She wanted to see Sokka and the only way she could do it was if I sacrificed myself.”
Zuko lowered his eyes down her body. “You have loyalty for those you love. Loyalty is a good quality to posses.”
Was he complementing her?
Katara stared up into the softening golden eyes as he continued to speak.
“I have seen your loyalty to your friends countless times; there is no question that you would die for them if you had too. If you consider being here a death then I would say that you have proved yourself worthy of being the mother of my children.”
The words hit her like a stone hurled by Toph. “I am not worthy of such a thing. Your child should have a mother who loves you and would give her life for you and her son.”
“Loyalty is what it is called and you have it.”
“I do not have it for you, Emperor.”
Zuko should have thrown her away in anger but he did not. He continued to stare into her eyes.
“I understand your dislike for me. I was different then. I was angry with my father and took it out on you and the others. The Avatar and Sokka hold no ill feelings towards me why do you?”
He released her hands from the table and stepped back from her body. Katara could only stare at him. What was he doing trying to confuse her? Why did he want to know what she thought and why she hated him? Did it bother him that she did? He never showed any interest in her before. This had to be a trick.
“Does it bother you that I do not think fondly of you? You do not think fondly of me.”
Zuko raised an eyebrow. “How can you know that your first reaction to me is anger and contempt?”
Katara moved away from him and turned her back towards him. Confusion ran through her mind as he continued to talk.
“I propose we start over. Forget our first meeting and begin anew. You are here for reason other than Toph.”
Katara turned ready to discount his words but Zuko held up his hand stopping her. “Azula did not have to write your name and I did not have to allow you into my home.”
He began walking towards her slowly. “Let us start again and give each other the respect they deserve.”
He could see her confusion and wondered if she could see the conflicted emotions within him. He told himself he wanted to lower her defenses to see what she really wanted here but the truth be known he wanted to see the soft side of this Maiden.
He seemed genuine. She did not wish to be on guard everytime she saw him. They had met under difficult circumstances. It was not his fault. They just did not have time to talk.
Katara looked down at the floor. “Alright I am willing to start again.”
Toph walked into the dining hall calling for Katara. She knew she would be angry with her for leaving her alone. Sokka was to blame for that Toph told herself. Palace guards ran past her as she continued calling for Katara. These palace guards running down the hall stopped any aggression between she and Meng before it could start.
Xin fu approached her. “She and the Emperor are in conference.”
Toph sighed and lowered her head. This was her fault for making Katara come here. Now, the Emperor was tormenting her.
“She will never forgive me.”
Xin fu raised an eyebrow. “Perhaps your mind is elsewhere and you are unable to see to her needs.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Katara requires a reliable advisor. You are clearly here for your own reasons and therefore I suggest that you allow me to make the Maiden into the perfect wife.”
Toph frowned. “I am here for Katara. You are here for the Empress not my friend.”
Xin fu smiled. “I only offer my expertise so that you and the captain can get better acquainted.”
“You would like that but it is not going to happen. Katara does not need you.”
Xin fu chuckled. “Apparently she does. I was the one who saved her from embarrassment. You only caused it in conversation.”
Toph glared at the voice coming from the untrustworthy man. “I’ll crush you with rock if you do anything to her.”
Xin fu smiled and bowed to Toph. “If you can I would be impressed.”
The door to the conference room opened and the Emperor walked out escorting Katara from the room. Toph smiled when she heard Xin fu curse softly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~Katara’s quarters~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She sat before her desk staring at the blank parchment before her. The only thing constant running through her head was confusion over today’s events. Katara picked up the inked writing utensil and began to put her thoughts onto paper.
Day 1
I do not understand what he is trying to do by being civil with me. He must have something planned this is not the Zuko I remember. He at times seems jealous of Xin fu who is only trying to help me. He and Toph think he is after something more. They maybe right but he does know more about this life than Toph.
Toph, I would do this a million times over if you needed me too. I can never stay angry with you no matter what happens. You are my true friend. I just wish you would admit you LOVE my brother.
It is beautiful here. I can see why so many wish to be the concubine to the Emperor. He is a handsome man when he is not scowling at me. I mean at anyone. Perhaps the time we met there was no time to get to know each other. Maybe he is right and we should start over. I do not know what he wants and I do not care. Once Toph and Sokka admit they love each other I am going home… alone.
He watched her from his window across the courtyard, sitting at her desk writing out her thoughts from today. Azula had sent two women home after dinner that night. Katara seemed disappointed she was not among them. Her advisor Toph chuckled at her response. It bothered him that she still wanted to leave even after their talk. She was not easily convinced with his words.
Zuko watched her stand and turn towards the window. Her body transformed the thin nightdress into a seductive gown. They may have been at odds before but he always thought she was beautiful.
Her facial expression stopped him from thinking more about her body. She seemed troubled by his words he was certain. Perhaps his words required action to prove they were truthful. The light within her room extinguished and Zuko turned from the window.
Why should he care if she was troubled that is what he wanted to break her defenses? She was too loyal to betray her friends by helping the rebels against him. If this were true, what was he doing?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Xin fu’s quarters~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I know your pain is great but you have to think clearly in this situation Meng. Sokka wants the little earthbender and there is nothing that you can do about it.”
Meng wiped her eyes as she looked up at Xin fu. “You said he wanted me but it does not seem as if he does.”
“He is confused but I think that if you keep trying you will succeed in winning the man of your heart Meng.”
She sniffed and wiped her face again of the tears. “I will try harder and he will know that I am serious in my love for him.”
Xin fu smiled and smoothed her hair as best he could. “There you are the fighter returns. Now go get some rest so you can plan the battle in the morning.”
He watched her walk from his room with a smile on his face. Meng would keep Toph away from Katara. He would not have to worry about Toph filling her mind with unkind words about him. He could have her all to himself and not even the Emperor could pull her away from him once he wooed her into his arms. No woman had resisted him yet.
