Chapter Five
It was a shame really. She hadn’t exaggerated about his skillful tongue.
But she wasn’t looking for a lover to woo her and win her. Men came and went, but gold kept a girl very warm on a long winter’s night.
The expression of surprised horror on his face didn’t bother her in the least. The princely brat should have remembered who was dealing with. Jun certainly hadn’t forgotten.
It was also funny as hell that this was the second time she’d taken charge from the bottom.
Jun pulled harder on the ends of the whip while simultaneously stiffening her arms to hold her prey as far from her as possible. It took all of her strength to keep Angry Boy from reaching her. Her only hope of keeping him from putting up a fight was to throttle him into unconsciousness as quickly as possible, before he could pry himself free with his greater strength.
Keeping him from drawing a decent breath was crucial for another reason. Jun had taken other lovers from the Fire Nation in the past, and had managed to coax a few interesting facts from a particularly gregarious firebender.
If fire came from the breath, she’d have to make damn sure Angry Boy couldn’t draw one.
He tried to pull back suddenly, raising her several inches off the ground as he continued to claw at the leather constricting his neck. Jun retaliated by wrapping her legs around his waist and pulling him back down. “That’s it, baby. Just go to sleep now. Everything’s going to be all right…”
As if on cue, her princely lover’s eyes rolled back in his head, his body becoming suddenly heavier as he slipped into oblivion. Jun held him for another few seconds, then carefully rolled him off her to one side, gasping as she felt him slide from within her. She removed the whip from around his neck and checked to see if he was still breathing. Assured that he was still among the living, she rose to her knees and stared down at him.
A real shame. He wasn’t the best she’d ever had, but with a little time and patience he could have been. She reached out and traced his scar, wondering really for the first time how he had received it, and from whom. Not that she would ever find out now. Once she turned him over and received the bounty money, it would most likely be the last anybody heard of Angry Boy. But for this brief moment he was still hers, and she relished the sight of him, still and pale in the moonlight.
Jun delicately stroked the scar tissue under his eye. She knew she shouldn’t linger a moment longer. The prince was a tough little bastard. He’d proved that when he shook off her xirxiu’s poison so quickly. If she was going to take him in she couldn’t afford to waste another moment in melancholy reflection. With a sigh she rose to her feet, retrieved her whip, and was starting to walk over to her xirxiu when she stumbled on something in the darkness.
She fell sprawling to the ground, barely catching herself from plowing face-first into the packed dirt. Shaking her head, she turned to see what had tripped her up. Zuko was still lying there on his side, in the same position she had left him, save his legs, which had entangled with her own. As she met angry golden eyes with her own, Jun realized that she had tarried far too long.
Scrambling to her feet, she raced over to her xirxiu, hearing the hiss and crackle of fire behind her. As she frantically untied the creature’s reins, she dimly noted that at least his flame was muted somewhat. He was probably still having problems drawing a decent breath. With a final tug the knot came free. Jun didn’t bother to try to mount, just pulled the beast’s head in Zuko’s directions and shouted, “Get him!”
The firebender was ready for them. Crouched and ready with fists alight with fire, the flames casting golden silhouettes on his nude form, he was the most beautiful thing she’d ever seen.
This time, she would not hesitate to bring him down.
Her xirxiu charged across the small clearing and whipped its tongue at the prince, forcing Zuko to stagger backwards out of the way. Jun followed and retrieved her whip, casting a longing glance at her clothing and boots before joining the hunt.
A stray bolt of fire sent her flying to one side, its size and heat a clear indicator that Zuko had caught his breath. Jun cursed and threw herself to one side, narrowly avoiding being knocked over by her own mount. Lesson quickly learned, she drew back and allowed the animal to have its fun.
Jun watched as the xirxiu’s tongue nearly scored a winning blow, missing the prince’s shoulder by a hair’s breadth, the barbs on its tongue sticking momentarily to a slender tree trunk. Instead of taking advantage of this to retreat, he lunged forward and grabbed the animal’s tongue in both hands.
Jun couldn’t restrain a wicked laugh. “Oh, so you’re going to play tug-of-war with him. How cute.”
The xirxiu bellowed and pulled its tongue free from the tree trunk, causing Zuko to stumble and nearly fall to the ground. “Tug-of-war isn’t what I had in mind!”
Flames erupted from the fire prince’s hands. The xirxiu screamed and reared, jerking Zuko completely off his feet. Jun watched in horror as he let go of the animal’s tongue in mid-air, falling lightly to his feet while her shrieking mount thundered blindly off into the forest.
Jun’s eyes followed her retreating xirxiu, then darted back to rest on Zuko. Angry Boy was making no move to attack her. He was just standing there, arms by his sides. Jun was amused to note that the strangling and the fight hadn’t done anything to mitigate his arousal. But her amusement was a small thing when compared with her anger…and her fear.
“That’s twice you’ve run off my xirxiu off, whelp. You’ll regret it when I have to drag your sorry carcass back to town.” She uncoiled her whip and gave it a small snap to accentuate her threat.
He made no move, not even to take a defensive stance. “You lied to me!” he roared.
Jun’s eyes narrowed. “You’re insane. I never promised you anything.”
“You said we had a truce. No fighting, no burning. Just finishing it.” His voice was actually shaking with wrath.
“I am finishing it,” she snapped. “And you were a fool if you believed that promise meant anything to me.”
He wasn’t very good at concealing his emotions. Jun was able to clearly read the confusion and frustration in his eyes, on his face. It would be so easy to revile him, to drive him into a mindless rage that would lead him to make a mistake she could exploit. She laughed harshly and gave herself the pleasure of taunting him.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, you did think it meant something, didn’t you? Did you expect me to stop hunting you just because I fucked you? Maybe you were thinking we could settle down, build a nice little hut together and grow cabbages or some happy shit like that.”
Jun smirked. “Or did you perhaps imagine me as your Fire Lady? It’s kind of hard for me to be a queen, when you’re nothing but a banished prince.” She sneered at him. “Did you think that sex guaranteed love? How sweet. You’re just a bounty, Angry Boy. A very difficult, very profitable bounty with a few small benefits and a whole lot of hassles. And I’ve wasted enough time on you.”
Her skill with the whip wasn’t limited to encouraging stubborn beasts to the hunt. Jun’s strike closed the distance between them before pretty boy could bat an eyelash. His cry of surprised agony was sweet music to her ears; the trickle of blood from just above his ear brought a predatory grin to her face.
The firebender staggered back and barely managed to avoid her next strike. Jun continued forward, cracking the whip repeatedly to keep him off balance, to keep him from bringing deadly fire into their struggle. Without her xirxiu, she was at a serious disadvantage against a firebender. However, she did have one more ace up her sleeve, or rather in her boot.
Her lash caught him across the chest, tearing another howl from her prey. He stumbled backwards and circled away from her, seeking to put distance between the whip and himself. Jun pressed him, moving discreetly back to the pile of her discarded clothing. She was almost there. Another ten feet and she would be able to retrieve her back-up weapon, the poison-tainted dagger sheathed discreetly in her boot, the venom on its blade courtesy of her own xirxiu. The toxin didn’t last as long with this method, nor did it paralyze completely, but it would certainly give her the edge she needed to bring Angry Boy to heel.
The firebender darted to one side, but Jun was ready for him, missing him by scant inches with her lash. At this distance, she had plenty of room to manipulate her sinuous weapon freely. It was a precarious balance. If she let him get too far out of the way, just beyond the reach of her whip, he could shoot flame at will. If he got too close she wouldn’t have enough room to strike. But if he stayed at his current distance, she would be able to hurt him enough to slow him down for her dagger.
So naturally the brat decided not to cooperate. She scored another hit, this time a bloody welt on his left arm. Between that hit and the next, Zuko was suddenly no longer in her kill zone. With a flying leap and a quick roll on the ground, he was suddenly only a few feet from her. And he was seething with rage.
Zuko reached for her with a blazing hand, only narrowly deflected by the handle of Jun’s whip. She backpedaled away from him, trying to regain some valuable distance but he pursued her, his face a mask of rage, hands alight with flames.
In desperation, Jun threw the whip at him and darted for her boots. In the darkness by the glowing embers of the fire, it was hard for her to see what she was doing. She managed to get her hands on one of her boots, only to find it was the wrong one. With a snarl and a mental kick for not concealing two daggers, she began to feel around the ground for her other boot when a chilling sound stopped her cold. The crack of a whip.
“So that’s how it works.” Angry Boy didn’t sound so angry now, just very, very arrogant. Jun turned slowly, still crouched on the ground, and saw her quarry standing where she had left him, holding her whip casually. A quick movement and the lash snapped again. Whether by luck or by design it knocked her boot from her hand. She yelped and fell backwards, scuttling as far away from the prince as she could.
The moon was bright enough in the sky to compensate for the dying fire. As she stared up at her irate lover, Jun noted with professional detachment that the welt on his chest was going to look spectacular in a few hours. He was bleeding from his arm and from the gash on the side of his head, the wounds looking like ink stains in the moonlit night. The part of her that was not-so-professional admitted that he was like a marbled god in the moonlight, beautiful despite his scar, or maybe even because of it, the imperfection accentuating the beauty of the whole.
“You’re awfully fond of using this on me,” he noted, his casual tone not quite concealing the seething rage. Even from this distance Jun could feel the heat pulsing from him. An involuntary downward glance told her that his arousal had not waned. She wondered just what form his vengeance would take. “Let’s see how you like being the prey.”
Her eyes widened in horror as he raised his arm. She clambered to her feet, the singing hiss of the whip telling her that it was too late, she had moved too slowly. The lash sliced across her thigh, opening a thin gash the length of her hand. Jun could not bite back her cry of mingled pain and surprise. She fell backwards on the hard ground, holding her injured limb and hissing in agony.
“You little bastard!” She glared up at her tormentor, expecting him to take another shot at her. To her surprise he was not gearing up for another strike, just staring at her. It was too dark to read his expression, or his intent. “Well? What’re you waiting for? You’ve got all the chips, boy! Hit me again! Or are you too much of a coward?”
She knew she had gone too far when he exhaled sharply, and smoke billowed from his mouth. When he threw the whip down and stalked across the distance surrounding them, Jun experienced the first true panic she had known in a long while.
Idiot! There are worse things than the whip, girl, and fire’s one of them!
Jun rolled onto all fours and flung herself at the pile of clothing, searching frantically for her lost boot and concealed dagger. One more shot to pull this off, one more opportunity to avoid paying for her trespasses. She breathed a relieved sigh as her fingertips brushed worn leather, was leaning forward to seize her prize when a weight between her shoulder blades drove her chest into the ground.
“Now what could you be searching for?”
How she’d grown to hate that smug voice in just a very short time. She braced her arms on the ground and tried to lever herself up, but Zuko was putting his weight into keeping her down. She felt his thighs against the backs of her own, and felt something else that made her eyes grow wide in horror. Angry Boy was still sporting a raging hard-on, and pretty much had her dead to rights.
He reached over her and snagged her boot. “Your boots? Seems sort of strange for you to be putting those on first…unless getting dressed isn’t what you had in mind…”
With her head forced to the side, Jun couldn’t actually see what he was doing, could only hear him fumbling with the boot on her other side.
“Well, would you look at this? Nice dagger Jun. Did you let that monster of yours lick it?” He didn’t wait for her answer. She caught the flash of moonlight on metal as the blade soared through the air, landing with a muffled thud in the dense foliage of the forest.
“Nice try, but I had something else in mind…”
She felt Zuko lean over her, his hot breath tickling her cheek. She couldn’t see him from this angle, but she could feel the length of his body pressed against her own, his free hand cruelly seizing her hip, and his hardness against her…
He was not gentle when he entered her, slamming his body into her own so hard it ripped a strangled cry from her throat and forced her even more painfully into the dirt. Jun gasped for breath, wondering how something could hurt and feel good at the same time. She felt his hand leave her back and travel back to her other hip. Without a moment’s hesitation, she pushed off the ground and started to pull away. A moment later, the hand shoved into her back once more, bearing her down. A second later his other hand, encased in flame, slammed down flat in the earth inches from her face.
“Don’t move, unless you want that on your back next time. Or someplace even worse.”
Jun nodded, and the flaming hand was removed, though still uncomfortably warm when it reclaimed her hip. She closed her eyes and gritted her teeth at what was to come, praying to gods she’d long forgotten that he wouldn’t be in the mood to kill her when it was over.
He pulled out and thrust into her again, hard enough to bring tears to her eyes. As he began fucking her in earnest, Jun carefully pulled her arms up under her and braced herself against the violent rocking of their bodies. He clearly did not mean for her to enjoy this, which made the swelling of pleasure from the brutal friction that much sweeter. Jun heard his breathing grow more ragged in time with her own, felt her own release burning inside her and knew that he would not be far behind.
Jun buried her face in her arms and played the part of victim, making certain not to let on to the prince that she was enjoying this as much as...no, more than his previous tenderness and ardor. Every hunter knew that sometimes the prey proved too elusive. Sometimes, the hunter became the quarry. As Zuko grunted and strained behind her, his balls slapping against her ass and that sweet piece of cock making her passage burn, Jun had to admit that it wasn't a bad way to lose. He was too much of a softie to kill her when he was done with her. She hadn't missed the look of self-loathing on his face after he'd whipped her. She would come out of this alive. It was a real shame she couldn't keep him around, but one she could live with.
The burning turned into an inferno within, her walls tightening around his member, dragging a keening wail from her throat and an answering shout from his he came hard within her. Her position and the long fall of her hair concealed her face from him, and her triumphant smile. Angry Boy had won this round for certain, but there would be another hunt. And Jun always learned from her mistakes.
