Chapter Five,
The Joes find out the truth about Joanna.
It was about five months later; Barry came and visited Beach at the base couple of times a month. Beach and Joanna kept to their workout in secret and then it was one day, she was finally asked to walk out of her wheelchair to where Beach-head was standing. And eventually she stood up and started to walk towards Beach-head.
Beach-head noticed the others entering the room and knew their cover was now blown, but she didn’t see them and kept walking towards him till she was right next to him. “Joanna, our cover has been blown. They know you can walk now.”
Joanna looked at Beach and asked, “Who?”
“Meaning us, Joanna,” said Lady Jaye, as Joanna turned around and saw the team standing there. “How long have you two been doing this?”
“For five months,” said Joanna.
“Wow. Congratulations Joanna does your dad know,”
“No, he does not know and he will not know till I decide that he will know,” said Joanna, as she sat down on the couch. “He’ll probably find out when I go walking to the van and get in. Now, we’re be needing to get a new van since I no longer need to use a wheelchair,”
“That’s great,” Lady Jaye replied. “It seems to me that your dad wouldn’t care if you did.”
“He sold my horses that I owned and he didn’t have the right to sell at all; he fired my stable of employees all because of my accident. My mother died of a fall she took from a horse and I assume that is why dad was freaked out when I fell,” Joanna said.
“Oh, Joanna, I’m so sorry,” Lady Jaye replied.
“Hey I didn't know that,” Beach replied.
Scarlett asked, "How did you get into the wheelchair and why did your father say you were paralyzed?”
"You want the whole story? It's long," said Joanna.
“Sure. It could help us understand your dad more,”
"I'll start it off with the accident that caused me to be in that chair for over eleven months," Joanna stated.
"I'll make sure that the door is locked," Beach said, as he hurried to lock the recreation room's door.
"Thanks, Beach." Scarlett said.
“The accident happened when we went into the water section of the endurance ride. Golden Starbright must have landed wrong as he tried to jump the next jump, he slammed his right front leg into the ground and it buckled underneath him and pinned me against the jump itself.” Joanna said, as she turned to look at Beach-head.
Lady Jaye asked, “What happened to Golden Starbright? I saw the accident but I didn’t see what they did to him after they hauled him away to the vet’s office.”
“They destroyed him. The leg was shattered beyond repair. I was almost in the same boat with Star.”
“What do you mean?” asked Lady Jaye.
“I was stuck underneath a thousand pound horse that was thrashing trying to stand and kept falling against my leg that was pinned underneath…”

The ride was going smooth till the water jump. Joanna heard a crack but thought it was just Starbright slamming against the jump as he leapt over it. It was only when they got ready to jump the next one; when he fell forward against the jump itself.
Everything went slow motion for her as she struck the jump with the helmet. The next thing she saw was people on Starbright holding him down as she was being removed before she passed out again from the pain.

“That was all I could remember from the accident. My father filled me in with what happened to Golden Starbright when I woke up,” said Joanna.
Tears ran down Scarlett's face. “What happened next?”
“I asked dad what happened to Starbright,” Joanna said.

“Dad, what happened to Starbright? Is he okay?” Joanna asked.
“I’m sorry, Joanna, but Starbright’s leg was shattered beyond repair. They could not operate on his leg. I authorized them to put him down humanely immediately. He was in a great deal of pain and even if they were able to, his quality of life would be full of being pumped full of pain killers to kill the pain. You wouldn’t want him to go through that kind of pain, so they put him down. I have had him transported home and they buried him under your favorite tree.” General Brantley lied.
“I thought he just broke part of his leg, I heard the vet say he just broke a bone!” Joanna cried out.
“I know, sweetie. That’s what he thought too, at the jump, till the X-rays were done. The bone was shattered in so many places just trying to repair it all would have took days to do for all the small splinters of bone that was floating in his leg. He recommended not operating on it and putting him down. I thought long and hard about it. I did what I thought you would have done and told him to do it. Starbright was put down three hours after the accident, three hours being tranquilized so he would not struggle or feel any pain,” Brantley said, holding her hand.
“I want to see the report on Starbright,” Joanna snapped, yanking her hand away from him.
“But dear, it will only hurt you more to see the X-rays,” he said.
“I want to see it!” she snapped.
“The vet doesn’t have the X-rays no more. They were given to the insurance company since you insured him. They have to look it all over and then they’ll decide to pay you for the death of your stallion, dear.” He stated, looking at her.

“Two days after I got out of the hospital, the insurance company came out to the house and gave me a check for three million dollars which we had insured Golden Starbright for. I wanted immediately to go out to the auction house in Lexington Kentucky to find a retired racehorse and buy him from his owners but dad refused to let me,” Joanna said, looking at them.
“I thought your father was heartless but his actions were inexcusable. Lying to you like that,” Beach replied angrily.
“I know. I really wanted to get a new stallion who could replace Golden Starbright in our show string, but my father refused stating that my Olympic show career was over. But I knew something was not right by how he was acting,” Joanna stated.
“But how did you find out that Golden Starbright’s injury was not that bad?” asked Flint.
“I was at the vet’s office as I was inquiring about the X-rays that they took on Golden Starbright’s shattered right front leg. They looked at me like what shattered front leg. The vet told me the truth about the leg that it was only broken and it was an easy fix to repair. He showed me the X-ray and told me that my father said destroy him before I even had the chance to tell him that it was an easy bone to repaired,” said Joanna.
“That bastard!” spat Flint.
The Joes looked at Joanna with sorrow in their eyes; they never knew her father was so cruel to her, while she was trying to recoup from her injuries only to find out that he put down her horse, who could have been saved by fixing his broken leg.
“I was furious when I learned that my beloved stallion was put down for no real good reason; that made me decide to find a way to walk again. It was only when I was here alone with Beach-head did I realize that he could be the one to help me regain the use of my legs again.” Joanna stated.
"We spent months on getting her legs stronger, she still is a bit weak if she stands for too long but that should fade in time," Beach said.
“That’s wonderful,” Lady Jaye replied.
“So when will she be able to walk and stand normally,” Scarlett asked.
"Yes, it is. With the help of Beach-head, I found the new owners of my mare Flybynight and my gelding Nightmare and bought them from them. She and my other gelding was delivered home today and when dad finds out he'll be pissed but he can't do anything about it as I rehired my employees and they'll help me around the barn and with training them again, now that I can walk," Joanna stated.
Beach said, "She can walk right now but it would be best if she had a walker to help her stay steady on her feet as she walked."
“Where are you going to get a walker from?” Scarlett asked.
Doc entered the room with a walker folded up in his arms. "Hi Beach, Joanna, it arrived in today's mail. How's the training?"
"Doc, she walked all the way from her wheelchair over by the far wall to where I am standing," Beach stated, proudly.
It was during the time that they were all talking, did a new recruit walk into the room and looked mainly at all the women in the room before turning and walking out. Joanna thought something was odd about her and asked Beach if there was a recruit with that colored hair.
“Um yeah she just started here she mostly keeps to herself,” Beach had noticed the recruit and didn't connect her with anyone till he realized that Joanna had detected a spy for Cobra in the base. Beach yelled out, "That recruit is a spy for Cobra!"
The other Joes all raced after Beach-head towards where the woman went off towards to find her climbing into a helicopter that was hovering over head firing off shots at the Joes. It was a Cobra helicopter.
“Oh crap its Zarana…that bitch!” Flint screamed.
Gung-ho came running towards Flint, "We tried to capture her but we failed. What do you think she was here for?"
"I have no clue, Gung-ho, not a clue," Flint said, as he looked at him.
~~~~~~
Cobra’s helicopter landed at a private airstrip as a plane waited for Zarana’s arrival with the film from the Joes’ women. Zarana wondered which one of the women would prove to be Serpentor’s bride.
“Here are the pictures you wanted, my lord,” Zarana watched as he took them from her. She felt it would be best if she went towards the door in case he found none of them to be his style.
"Stay where you stand, Zarana." Serpentor stated, calmly.
"Yes, my lord," Zarana said, as she stood where she stopped.
‘Oh god he's going to hate them.’ she thought as he looked through the pictures studying them.
"Tell me who this one is? She's new to the Joe team," Serpentor said, holding the last picture up. It was of Joanna.
“Some girl named Joanna,”
"I want her bio now!" roared Serpentor.
“What? I think she was a visitor.”
"I want to know who she is!" he roared.
Destro was fast scanning through the files of the Joes that they managed to steal from their last hacking into their computer system two months earlier. "I have her bio here, my lord. She's on in-active status though."
“You do?” He asked excitedly. “Print it out THIS I COMMAND! Also, I want to know where she lives as well, as what her habits are, everything!"
"Why do you want to know all that, my lord?" asked Dr. Mindbender.
"Because my dear Dr., we are going to kidnap her, for I have chosen my bride. My bride will be Joanna Brantley." Serpentor stated.
Stay tuned, the next one is coming.
