Chapter 5- Broken.
Kimi was surfing the net in her room. A smile on her face; in less than an hour the rumours about Matthews sexual preference had ended and had been replaced with the story of he and Kimi getting together.
She had organised to get together with him and have coffee on Saturday and they had mentioned, in passing, that they would be going together to the valentines-day dance coming up in a month. But since they had so much time they would talk about it properly later.
There was a light knock on her door and her mother poked her head into the room.
"Kimi. There is someone to see you." She stepped back and allowed the visitor to enter.
If Kimi had to make a list of the ten people she expected to never walk through her door. Suzy would have been right at the top. But Suzy walked in and gave Kimi the surprise of a lifetime.
"I'll leave you two to talk." Said Kimi's mother and closed the door behind her as she left. Kimi jumped out of her chair and stared at Suzy. Her neutral expression was sending out the signal that she was angry without trying to look angry. Kimi new exactly what Suzy was upset about.
"Look I know that-" But she didn't get any further than that. Suzy pulled her arm back and slapped Kimi so hard that she was thrown into the wall, only just missing her desk and computer.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" She yelled. "You can't come out to your friends and then start dating some poor boy? What is this? Are you trying to convince yourself that you're straight? Didn't destroying your friendship with Tommy convince you enough?"
She grabbed Kimi's arms tightly and yanked the girl to her feet.
"You have to finish it before you hurt him and humiliate yourself."
Kimi had finally had enough. She pushed Suzy hard, getting the girl away from her. She had planned to be understanding and explain, but Suzy's aggression had pushed her over the edge.
"What the hell do you care? When I needed you most you walked away from me. You don't understand what's going on between Matthew and me." She yelled so loudly that there was no doubt that their argument was being heard all over the house.
"I won't let you ruin his life." Said Suzy defiantly. "I'll tell everyone the truth if that's what it takes to stop you."
Kimi lashed out and landed a punch right onto Suzy's cheek. Suzy was thrown off her feet and fell on the floor.
"Get out." Kimi screamed at the top of her lungs. "Get out. Get out. GET OUT."
Suzy scrambled to her feet and ran before Kimi could do anything else to her. Kimi's rage was not satisfied by the departure of her ex-friend. She grabbed books off her shelves and threw them across the room. She tore her posters to shreds. Grabbed her CD's and tossed them anywhere. Gripping the edge of her desk she yanked as hard and she could. The whole thing toppled with a satisfying crashing and breaking noise.
"KIMI." Yelled a voice behind her. Before she could turn, two strong arms wrapped themselves around her torso, pinning her arms to her chest. She caught a flash of red hair. It was her brother Chuckie. She never knew he was this strong. She screamed and thrashed, trying to free herself from his grip but he held on with a grip of iron.
"LET ME GO. FUCKING BASTARD. LET ME GO."
He said nothing and did nothing. He just held on tightly as she struggled against him, whipped her legs back and kicked him and even stamped on his feet. He never uttered a sound.
Quickly her rage began to subside and Kimi became dead weight in his arms. Chuckie couldn't hold her anymore and she fell limply to the floor in a sobbing heap. Chuckie got down onto the floor beside her and she clamped her arms around him this time. She hugged him tightly and sobbed into his shoulder, loudly and with lots of tears and snot. He gently rubbed her back with his hands, making quiet shushing noises while rocking her back and forth. A trick their mother had performed on them when they were little and had a nightmare. Kimi later thanked him for not singing the nursery rhyme their mother used as well; he had a terrible singing voice.
Finally her tears slowed and she looked at the large wet patch on his shirt ashamedly.
"I've ruined everything now. She'll never speak to me again." She sobbed quietly, tears were still falling down her face, but she was in a lot more control than she was a few minutes ago. Chuckie hugged his sister again.
"It'll be alright Kimi. You'll see, everything will work out." He could tell she didn't believe him, but felt that the words needed to be said anyway.
Kimi's back was to the door and she didn't see their parents approach. Chuckie held out his hand and glared at them solemnly. They understood from his look that the outburst was over and that he had things under control. He didn't need them to get involved at this point. They nodded and silently slinked away.
Kimi glanced around her room and almost started crying again. Her desk had been turned upside down, all of her books were damaged after being thrown against the wall. Most of her CD's lay scattered around the room and someone their cases were broken into several pieces.
"We better clean up." Muttered Chuckie. "Give me a hand with the desk.
Together they managed to straighten the whole room up relatively quick. Kimi was shocked and amazed that she had caused so much damage in such little time. Her CD's were fine, but the cases would need a lot of superglue or replacing. Her books were worse for wear but still readable. Her laptop, which had been on her desk still worked, but its screen didn't, totally black with a thick crack running down its centre. Chuckie took it with him, claiming to could be repaired.
"You going to be alright?" He asked when the last book had been put away. Kimi took one more look around her bedroom. The torn posters sticking out of the waste paper basket and the small bits of broken CD cases still on the floor.
"I just want to sleep." She said to him quietly.
Chuckie left his sister alone and carried her broken laptop back to his room. the only way to get it working again, would be to put the hard drive into another computer. Tommy had a few connections with some people at the computer store, all the software and extra memory and graphics chips he'd bought put him on first name basis with half the staff. Chuckie decided not to tell Tommy it was Kimi's computer that was broken. He was acting so strange whenever Kimi's name was mentioned. He would either change the subject or just stay silent and glare angrily. Even Dill wasn't too fond of hearing her name at the moment. But neither of them would say what it was about Kimi that bothered them.
He put the laptop onto his own desk; he would get to that problem in the morning.

Kimi was quiet the next day. She had dark marks under her eyes from lack of sleep and they also seemed a little red and puffy, she had been crying a lot. She played with her cereal, eating little to nothing.
"You sure you want to go to school today Kimi? If your not feeling well you can stay home." Her father said putting his hand against her forehead. Kimi shrugged away his touch and shook her head.
"I'm fine dad and I'm finished." She dropped the spoon onto the table and walked off to gather her school things.
The second she was out the room her parents turned to their son Chuckie.
"What was she so upset about last night?" Demanded Kira, his mother. Chuckie sighed and peeked at the door, just in case Kimi might overhear.
"She and Suzy had an argument. They kind of ended their friendship." He saw the concerned look that his parents exchanged.
"What?" He demanded. They looked uneasy, but his dad caved under his intense glare.
"Well we heard that Kimi was seeing a boy at school." He said in a quiet voice. Chuckie nodded.
"So?" He demanded.
He knew why they were so confused, even he didn't understand what Kimi was doing with Matthew, but when asked Kimi said 'it's complicated' and fell silent.
His parents exchanged a look again before speaking.
"Well, we were thinking, that if she admits she is gay and get together with a boy practically the next day. Perhaps she isn't quite… right. Perhaps she needs to see someone to talk about it, a professional." Their mother.
Chuckie jumped from his seat, unable to believe what he was hearing.
"No. Kimi doesn't need to see anyone. She's fine."
"But Chuckie-" His dad began.
"But, nothing. There is nothing wrong with Kimi. She knows what she's doing." He stormed off and almost ran straight into Kimi in the hallway.
"What were you talking about?" she asked looking back into the kitchen. Chuckie shook his head angrily and grabbed her arm.
"Nothing. Lets just go. We're gonna be late."
Kimi smiled behind his back; she'd heard every word, the way he had jumped to her defence, even though he didn't know all the facts and it would have been so easy to agree that she was disturbed, which was where all the evidence was pointing. She was more proud than ever that Chuckie was her brother.
*************************
Once at school Kimi found Matthew, it was important to them both to keep up the illusion of being a couple. They hugged each other in plain sight of everyone, then decided to sneak off to a quiet place. People thought it would be for a quick secret kiss and possibly grope before class. In reality it was for planning how they would keep up the act.
"A kiss in the cafeteria would do it for today. You ok with that?" She asked. Matthew smiled and nodded.
"I don't like girl's, I'm not allergic to them. A kiss will be fine. But what about those friends of yours? The ones you told you were gay, have you been able to talk to them yet?" He asked. Kimi shook her head.
"I'll speak to them today. All of them."
Phil and Lill might be alright with her performance. Chuckie could be able to accept it. Tommy and Dill were unpredictable; they were angry with her. Tommy was angry because she slept with him to find out if she was gay and Dill was angry because she slept with Tommy just to find out if she was gay. They could say anything at any time. She knew that doing something about that situation was not going to be easy but had to be done nonetheless. Angelica was not happy that the hottest piece of gossip to fall into her lap all year was now believed to be lies. She could be silenced about Kimi's sexuality with a reminder of the wrath of Suzy. But Suzy would be the hardest part. Their argument the other night would make approaching her difficult. Kimi should have explained last night, but when Suzy had just barged in and assumed the worst; that she was just using matthew, that he was a poor stright boy she was using to convice hersef she wasn't gay. Kimi still got angry thinking about it, she would talk to Suzy last.
The school bell rang, signalling the start of class. Kimi and Matthew said their goodbyes and separated. Kimi was not looking forward to the task ahead of her.
