Chapter Four: Zuko’s Love Part Two
Zuko rose up with the sun as he always did. He tossed and turned all night long, thinking of Lynn. He stretched, and began to tip toe around everyone and emerged from the hut. He leaned up against the outside wall of the hut and began to think.
Last night he came to the conclusion that he had no problem with Mai, and that he should do what he did with her. But quickly decided against it, as he didn’t really love Mai, and Mai is a bit more on the gloom side than Lynn. No wait, a lot more gloomier than Lynn. So what worked with Mai probably wouldn’t work with Lynn.
He decided to walk through the streets as he decided what to do. He smiled as he saw people walking through the streets and people going to the market on the side that wasn’t destroyed. As Zuko got closer to the upper ring of the city, he came to a little restaurant that was all on the outside. He stood and examined, and then smiled.
“I could always take her on a date.”
Zuko turned around and began to walk back to where everyone else was at, happy at his thought of a date with Lynn.
Zuko reached where most of the White Lotus and saw that the members was passing out breakfast. He approached them and asked if he could have a plate, along with some extra plates so that his friends could have some as well. The woman nodded, and got a basket and began to place enough for everyone inside. She handed the basket to Zuko.
Zuko walked into the hut and saw everyone was sitting up. Everyone looked at him.
“What’s in the basket?” Sokka questioned as he began to sniff.
Zuko sat it down. “I got breakfast for everyone.”
They all rushed over and open it and pulled the food out passing it around to everyone. Everyone got a plate and sat around in a circle.
Zuko looked around at everyone who was happily eating, and noticed Katara was barely touching her food.
“Is there something wrong with the food?”
Katara looked up at Zuko. “No. Its fine.” She then picked up her eat utensils and began to eat again.
Toph could easily tell Katara was lying, but pushed it aside and continued to eat her food.
They had all finished eating and everyone sat around quite. Sukki finally spoke up.
“So, do we get to meet that girl today that is going to help us?”
Zuko never really thought about asking Lynn to meet everyone. He scratched his head.
“Well…uh…”
They all heard a knock at the door. Sokka got up and walked over to the door, and opened it.
Sokka blushed at the girl that was standing before him. The girl just looked at him and smiled.
“I was told that Prince Zuko was here. Is he around?”
Sokka sly smiled and turned around and looked at Zuko.
“Your girlfriend is here to see you Zuko!” Sokka slightly laughed.
Zuko felt slightly annoyed at Sokka assuming that the girl at the door was his. “I don’t have a girlfriend!” Zuko spat back.
The girl blushed, as she heard Zuko yell at the person at the door. She cleared her throat. “Tell him, its Lynn.”
“She says her name is Lynn.” Sokka stepped away from the door revealing Lynn to Zuko and everyone.
Zuko quickly stood up and walked over to the door, and slightly pushed Sokka behind him.
“I’m sorry Lynn, I didn’t know it was you.” Zuko bowed. “I also apologize about my friend here.”
She smiled and giggle a little. “It’s okay. So are these your friends you was talking about.” She stood on the tip of her toes trying to look over Zuko.
Zuko moved to the side and nodded. “Yes.” He began to go around in order that everyone was sitting in, introducing everyone. They all waved at her and she nodded and waved back as they did so.
“Everyone, this is Lynn. She will be the one that will help us.” Zuko then turned to look at her.
Everyone gasped.
Sokka pointed to Lynn with his mouth slightly opened. “Your….you’re the girl that is going to fight the Fire Lord.” Sukki elbowed Sokka in the side.
Lynn nodded in agreement, slightly flattered at Sokka’s statement.
Sokka stood up. “No offense, but you don’t look like someone that is suppose to be a powerful bender.”
Lynn stepped forward. “I suppose appearances can be deceiving.” She smile. “But I assure you, that I will do everything I can to help.”
Katara stood up. “Yeah, if your such a POWERFUL bender, why didn’t you help the Avatar?! I’m sure you knew that he was going to fight the fire lord.”
Lynn was slightly taken back at Katara’s comment but wasn’t surprised at the comment from what she seen Katara do to Zuko’s face.
Zuko felt angered at their comments to Lynn. “This is how you are going to treat someone who has agreed to help us? Someone who saved Ba Sing Se? You should be grateful and thanking her for what she has done!”
“Its okay.” She reassured Zuko. “I knew the avatar was going to fight the fire lord, yes. It was the Avatar’s duty to restore balance to the world, but since he failed to do so I will do what I can to help.” Lynn took a breath “If I would have been there while the Avatar was fighting the fire lord there would have been a great possibility I would have died as well. Then there would have been no one to stop him from achieving his goals.”
Zuko was slightly surprise how Lynn handle the situation and just threw it back in their faces.
“Well from what I’ve heard from Zuko, you have already faced the fire lord. Why didn’t you bring him down then!?” Katara spat at Lynn.
She squinted her eyes at Katara. She could tell they wasn’t going to get along very well. “I fought the Fire Lord, yes. I saved Ba Sing Se, yes. But fighting the Fire Lord, I was only able to defend myself. I could take no offense. After he struck Iroh down, I took the only chance I had and swept him out of the city with a wave while putting the fire’s out. I carried him over the wall and dropped him.”
Zuko smiled slightly as she once again turned the situation back on them. Katara and Sokka both sat down.
Lynn spoke up again. “I you all are very upset about loosing the Avatar. I know you all was close to him. If I could do something about his death I would, but Zuko has already asked me and I’m really sorry.” She bowed and exited the hut.
Zuko in turn went after Lynn.
Toph slightly smiled as she felt everyone’s reactions. She especially felt a particular couple’s reaction towards each other. She then stood.
“Well now that you guys managed to chase away our last hope of defeating the Fire Lord, I’m gonna go walk around.” Toph left leaving Katara, Sokka and Sukki the only one’s left.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Zuko walked to the side of Lynn. “I hope you don’t let anything they said offend you. I’m sure they didn’t mean any of it.”
Lynn turned her head and looked at Zuko as she continued to walk through out Ba Sing Se. “I know. I know that it is hard for them. To lose someone you really care about is really hard to bear.”
They continued to walk in silence. Zuko had an idea already what it was like. He had lost his mother yes, and at a young age, but him letting Lynn go over the next couple of years was almost unbearable. Zuko stop for a moment and looked at Lynn. She turned back around and walked up to Zuko.
“Is something the matter?”
Zuko looked at Lynn and blushed slightly scratching his head.
“Well…I…uh” Zuko swallowed hard. “I was wondering, if, you would like to go to dinner with me tonight.” Zuko then looked Lynn in the eyes. “Of course, that is only if you want too.”
“I would love to go out to dinner with you.” Lynn smiled.
“Uh…really!?”
“Of course.” She nodded.
Zuko felt overwhelming happy.
“We can meet by the water fountain if you like? The one’s with the fire lanterns, around sunset?” Lynn suggested.
Zuko nodded.
Lynn then bowed and waved as she strolled off.
“Wow…” Zuko thought. “That went over a lot better than I expected.” He smiled. “I should have done this a long time ago.” Zuko then started to walk over to where his uncle’s tent was and decided he should ask for some money since he didn’t have any. It wasn’t something he thought about earlier.
Toph was on top of a building smiling. “This is going to be fun.” She decided to cause a bit of a ruckus to help get everyone’s mind off Aang, and to get the gang in more of a light hearted mood at east for one night.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Zuko found his uncle around the outer rim, giving instructions to the earth bender of how to rebuild. He stood and patiently waited for his uncle to get done.
Iroh then approached his nephew.
“Uncle, I have a favor to ask.”
Iroh raised an eyebrow in question of what it might be.
Zuko felt nervous about asking his uncle.
“I asked Lynn out to dinner tonight, and I was wondering if I could borrow some money.”
Iroh laughed and patted his nephew on his back.
“Well its about time.”
Iroh reached down into his pocket and pulled out a sack stuff full of gold pieces and handed it to Zuko.
“Be sure to buy her flowers. All women love flowers.” Zuko nodded and thanked his Uncle. He had a lot to do in so little of time. He still had to buy a new outfit and buy some flowers. As he walked away he felt his Uncle grab his shoulder. Zuko turned and look at his uncle.
“Be a gentleman, Zuko. As I know you will be. But to give you a few pointers, offer your arm to her as to escort her to the dinner, and once you get there pull her seat out for her…”
“I know Uncle.” Zuko smiled.
Iroh smiled and patted Zuko on the back and then slightly nudge him so he would go on about his day as he had to prepare.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Zuko pulled the robe over his shirt and pants. He reached for the silk belt and began to tie above his hips. He soothed out the wrinkles, double checking everything. His pants were black with some gold thread detailing, along with his shirt being a dark red with some gold outlining the sleeves. His robe was solid black with some gold detailing towards the bottom. He reached and grabbed the flowers he got from a merchant.
Toph was completely laid back and waiting for Sparky to emerge from the one room that had a door. She grinned in anticipation.
Zuko slid the screen open and saw that everyone but Toph was playing a card game. He tried to make his way by them without being seen.
“And where do you think your going Sparky?”
Zuko turned around with a bit of a stunned looked. He forgot Toph could still “see” him.
“Uh, no where. Just out to dinner.”
Everyone turned to look at Zuko.
“Aren’t you a little dressed up to go out to dinner?” Katara questioned.
“Well uh, I’m going to have dinner with someone in the upper ring of the city and…”
“Well” Toph stood up. “I’m starved! We should all go with you!”
Katara, Sukki and Sokka nodded in agreement.
Zuko felt extremely annoyed.
“Well, can’t you guys eat some where else?”
“What are you ashamed to be seen with us commoners, Prince?” Toph grinned.
“No, its just…” Zuko gave up as he didn’t want to offend his friends. They all began walking out the door, Zuko stood back only to hit himself with his palm.
They began to walk to the upper ring.
“I got to go meet someone, I will meet you guys at the entrance of the upper ring.”
“We shouldn’t split up though, we should stay together in case we can’t find each other.” Toph couldn’t help herself.
Zuko sighed and took a turn and headed towards the fountain with the others following. He decided to walk a little faster, so he could tell Lynn ahead of time what happened.
He could see a figure ahead standing by the fountain with their back turned looking into the sun set. As he got closer, he knew it was Lynn. Her blonde hair, look golden in the sun. She had some of her hair pulled up into a bun with some chopsticks holding it in place as the rest flowed along her back. Lynn turned as she heard foot steps. Zuko blushed as he seen she was wearing a red robe, with a golden design that repeated itself over. The robe clung to her, revealing all of her curves with a slit going up both sides that stop slightly above her knees. Zuko took a deep breath to keep from blushing. He never seen Lynn look so beautiful. She smiled as she watched Zuko approach her.
Zuko stopped in front of her and handed her the flowers he had gotten her. “I got these for you.”
She reached out for them and smiled.
“Thank you Zuko. They are beautiful!”
Zuko reached up to touch her cheek. “Your beau….” but was cut off by Sokka yelling.
“Who is that your with!?”
Annoyance washed all over Zuko’s face and he looked down to hide it but quickly recover and looked at Lynn.
“They just kind of invited themselves.” Zuko bowed. “I’m sorry.”
Lynn smiled and giggle. “Its okay.” Zuko turned to face them and offered his arm out to Lynn. Lynn blushed but gladly accepted as she intertwined hers with his. They walked over to the other.
“Ooo!” Toph smirked. “I think these two are on a date!”
They both blushed but neither of the said anything. Katara smug her face.
“Well I don’t think this is the time for anyone to be courting and going out to have fun.” She crossed her arms and turned her face.
“Its just dinner, and I’m being polite and courteous to Lynn to make up for earlier.” Zuko replied to Katara, as he felt that she might be a bit jealous.
Katara uncrossed her arms and began to walk and the others followed. Lynn and Zuko where in the back.
Zuko couldn’t help but keep glancing down at Lynn. She was breath taking beautiful tonight. Lynn caught eyes with Zuko and blushed slightly. Zuko quickly looked to front of them.
They reached the upper ring, where Zuko began to lead the group to the restaurant.
“Name?” The attendant asked.
“Zuko.”
The attendant looked down the list and looked at the party. He gathered the menu’s and motioned for them to follow. He led to them to a spot that Zuko picked by a little pond that had turtle ducks swimming about. Zuko walked over and pulled a chair, only for Toph to plop down in it.
“Thank you.”
Zuko sighed and went two chairs over and pulled out another one.
“My lady.” Lynn blushed and walked over and began to sit down as Zuko pushed the seat under her. He then sat down in between Toph and Lynn.
“What are we not good enough to get our chairs pulled out too!?” Katara spat as she pulled out her own chair.
Sokka and Sukki shrugged and sat down as well.
They all opened their menus and gazed. Zuko peeped over at Lynn, who was reading over the menu and looked up at Zuko who quickly turned his attention to the menu.
Their waiter approached them.
“May I take your order?”
“”Yes, I’ll take everything!” Toph grinned as she laid the menu down. The waiter nodded. Zuko’s mouth dropped as he knew that would take a VERY good portion of the money, and she wouldn’t eat half of it.
“And for the young lady?”
“Yes, I’ll have…” Lynn and Katara both spoke at the same time. Katara looked at Lynn and continued. “I will have tonight’s special.”
“I’ll take a bowl Udon*.” Lynn laid her menu down. “With a cup of ginseng tea.”
“I’ll have the filet of fish” Sokka laid his menu down as well. Sukki nodded in agreement as that is what she wanted as well.
“I’ll have Sashimi** with a side of wasabi please”
The waiter began taking Zuko’s menu along with the others.
They all sat quietly until Zuko broke the silence.
He turned to look at Lynn “What did you do today?”
She smile and started to speak.
“Yeah we are all dying to hear what you did today.” Katara rolled her eyes. “Play in water all day long?”
Lynn’s face became red, but she took a breath. “I helped out at the out rim of the city, earth bending carrying the ruble away, along with rebuilding some homes. A lot of the designs of the newer buildings is Iroh’s idea.” She paused for a moment. “We tried to build bigger homes that would support some of the bigger families in towards the outer rim of the city that don’t have the money to afford something like it.”
“Well isn’t that nice of you.” Katara shrugged.
Lynn felt her face get out as she knew it was flushing. “Katara.” Lynn folded her hands in her lap. “You seem to be the only one sour towards me. Did I do something wrong?”
“Yeah, Katara, it seems you have a big deal with her.” Toph leaned back in her chair.
“I don’t have a big deal with her.” She crossed her arms. “But you aren’t no avatar that is for sure. All you seem to do is splash around in water and move some earth around for fun and your all smiley all the time with no care in the world about what is going on!”
Lynn clenched on to her dress robe. She could fell herself grow anger at Katara’s insults at her.
“And here you are on a date with Zuko when you should be practicing or whatever! I bet even I could beat you in a match.”
Lynn stood up, laying her flowers down on the table and looked down at Katara.
“Katara! That’s enough!” Zuko looked angrily at her.
“If she wants to play in the water, we’ll play in the water.” Lynn began to walk out.
“It’ll be my pleasure.” Katara followed her.
Everyone else sighed. Zuko put his elbow on the table and laid his head in his palm. This wasn’t how he wanted to turn out. But after hearing Katara say all that, he realized that she tied all her anger about Aang dying to Lynn. Like how she tied all her anger towards him about her mother.
Zuko stood up. “I’m going to go make sure they don’t kill each other.”
“Yeah, I should go make sure Katara doesn’t do anything to serious.” Sokka followed leaving Toph and Sukki.
“Well…this turned out to be an interesting night.” Sukki said to Toph.
“Yeah, I’m going to go watch the fight as well.”
Zuko and Sokka stood looking at the two water benders. Sukki and Toph finally arrived standing behind them. Zuko looked at the full moon and knew it wasn’t good.
“What are you waiting for?” Katara spat at Lynn.
“For you.”
Katara gathered some water from the near by river and flung it towards Lynn who easily turned the water back at Katara, with more force and speed. Katara dispersed the water only to be hit from the side and knocked down by Lynn. Katara quickly stood whipping the water around and formed it into ice crystal and commanded them to pierce Lynn. Lynn held her arms above her and caught them in mid air, bringing her arms down she turned the ice to water. She kept the water circling herself waiting for Katara’s next move.
“If that’s all you got, I can beat you with just water bending.” Lynn challenged Katara.
Katara squinted her eyes and decided to show her what her true power was. She began to blood bend, but Lynn stood unaffected. Katara’s eyes widen.
Lynn squinted her eyes at Katara. “I know your trying to use a forbidden form of water bending on me, but like you the moon grants me with all of its power.”
Lynn whipped the water around and lashed Katara across her arm, breaking her form she was holding to try to blood bend on Lynn.
Katara brought up more water and turned it into ice but behind her back made a long ice shard. She brought one of her hands down and Lynn stopped it like before. She quickly flung the ice shard at Lynn.
Lynn saw it coming and quickly whipped the water around catching the shard and turning it into water. Lynn decided she had enough of splashing in the water with the bender. Lynn threw one wave after another at Katara, pinning her against the wall and froze her in place freezing her hands in mid air so she couldn’t bend anymore. Katara tried moving but couldn’t break free.
Lynn stood there and looked hard at Katara. Katara turned away, ashamed that she let Lynn beat her. She began to cry. Lynn saw this and motioned her hand downward letting the water free Katara. Katara fell to the ground.
Lynn walked over offering a hand to help her up. Katara looked up at her with tears streaming down her face. She looked away.
Lynn knelt down to look at her. She then reached out to hug her, and surprisingly she didn’t push away. Katara then pushed her away slight and stood up and bowed. Lynn stood up and bowed at Katara. Katara turned and began to walk away.
Zuko walked up to Lynn.
“It was what she needed.” Zuko put his hand on Lynn’s shoulder.
Lynn turned to look at Zuko.
Zuko offered his arm once again to Lynn. They began to walk back to the restaurant.
“Maybe we should go and leave you two alone.” Sokka scratched his head.
“No, it’s fine. You already ordered your food, and when you guys go back, you should take Katara’s her food.” Zuko reassured them.
Sokka and the others agreed, as it would give Katara some time and space.
Authors Note:
* Is just Japanese noodles.
**Sashimi is a variety of raw fish
Lynn and Katara fighting wasn’t something I had plan, it just happened. Its something that Lynn wouldn’t normally do either but I thought it would be a good away for Katara to vent her anger out about the Avatar. Like how I explained somewhere in this part, like how Katara tied her anger about her mother to Zuko, once she faced it, it went away. Same with this situation. It will go away, and everything will be good….well sorta hehehe XD I slightly hinted at the fact Katara is jealous of Lynn about Zuko. And I will be doing more with that later.
