Anthem Five: Mirror Games and Dark Dragons
Gruffi wasn’t sure he wanted to know why he was here, standing in front of a mirror, in Delphi’s room, waiting to hear whatever it was she had to say. He really wasn’t. Ever since she had appeared in their lives, things had seemed to just go downhill for him in more than one way. And quite frankly, he was...still stunned.
He’d kissed, and been kissed, by Gusto Gummi. Rival, friend, reluctant hero and villain of this whole escapade rolled into one bouncy blue package. Gruffi couldn’t cope. He couldn’t.
"Gruffi? Are you paying attention to me?"
The startled Gummi looked up at the slightly annoyed face of Delphi Gummi.
"This is important!" she said sternly. "We’re about the raise the ghosts of the past Queens of Ursailia, you need to concentrate!"
"Er, just why are we doing this again?" Gruffi asked in confusion.
The Mirror in front of them was swirling with a mystic blue light and magic.
“For your training! How are you ever going to truly tap into the Ring’s powers without training?”
Gruffi shrugged. Well, he’d done all right so far. This wasn’t the time to be hesitant though, as the mirror was swirling at a faster pace. Faster and faster, and as he watched it, he became mesmerized, then suddenly, a ghostly form flew out from the mirror, causing him to fall backwards startled.
"Waaaaugh!"
The ghost laughed!
“Now THAT’S the Gruffi I know!” laughed the female voice. From the looks of her, she was withered, and had a knowing look about her. Gruffi blushed sheepishly, and female giggles erupted from the mirror, followed by several more pale forms floating into the room.
"How do you know me? Are...are you?"
"Your ancestors, foremothers, Queens," said the last one, a stern but sad looking lady bear, with a frown on her face. "Delphi cannot hold the portal open for long...therefore, we have much work to do...in little time..."
"Come Gruffi," said the elder ghost, retreating back towards the mirror. "Follow..."
And Gruffi, taking a deep hesitant breath, did.

Gusto wasn’t sure what he was doing, following Denni through the tangled underbrush and rocky foothills of Vorallia, and perhaps he didn’t want to know. Denni had seemed insanely intent on their destination at this point, and Gusto was getting bad feelings about this. Very bad feelings.
"As tradition dictates, you must be trained by your ancestors in the use of the Dagger. However...Before you meet the ancestors, I must warn you, there were several generations of them, who...well...practiced dark magic..." Denni looked up, and he had an almost insane gleam in his eyes. "It is nothing to be afraid of, but some people are alarmed at first, by Dark Magic...But truly there is nothing to fear...The true power in Dark Magic is in not only being able to weild it, but defend ones self against it. And you will do both tonight..."
Gusto didn’t like the sound of that. He also didn’t like how dark it was, or how dull the stars seemed in their cosmic dance around the fogged moon. He wanted free of this dark and ominous forest as soon as was conveniently possible. But they seemed to be going farther and farther into the darkness of the wood, up into ancient ruins that seemed to have existed long before this conflict began…for ruins they still were.
"Have no fear Gusto. You have saved Vorallia, and with what you learn tonight, you may be able to save your future children, and grand children, and great grand-children..."
It was a compelling argument. Hot heavy energy seemed to surround him. The dim light incensed him and compelled him at the same time. He was sure his heart was going to burst from his chest, so hard was it pounding.
And then suddenly from the darkness came a voice, not Denni’s and not his own.
"Come...Gusto Gummi...Come into the Darkness..."
With a bated breath, and air filling Gusto’s already tight chest, he did.

"That’s it Gruffi! That’s it! You have the idea!"
They were in what seemed like a room, a training arena of sorts, with a big wide open floor, and walls that were ghostly and pale. He could see the stars shining brightly overhead.
"No no, don’t become distracted, you must keep your concentration on the shield!"
Gruffi grunted, ringed fist held out ahead of him as waves of energy bounced off his invisible force field and passed over and around his body. The Ghost women training him were all expert Magic Users of the Highest esteem, a talent granted to them only for having worn the Ring, as he now did. And now they were showing him its true power.
"The Ring Bearer isn’t just an ornament on the arm of the King, she’s his bodyguard and protector from Dark Magic, and so to must you be!"
Gruffi grunted, and focussed on the ring, on pouring his mental energy into protecting himself. The ring was the focus, the energy was his, and the shield...was strong. So strong that he momentarily lost concentration in awe at the high levels of energy that HE was creating!
Folly. He flew backwards, and hit a ghostly wall with a grunt, hissing.
"No! You must CONCENTRATE at all times, and not become distracted!" That was the stern ancestor, Aralia, coming towards him with a stern look.
Uh-oh, thought Gruffi. I’m in trouble...
"A Dark Wizard isn’t going to throw happy beams of sunlight at you, he’s going to try to kill you! And if you don’t concentrate completely that feeble shield you were creating will never stand up to the pure force they exude!"
Gruffi gaped.
"Feeble Shield?"
"Aralia..." said Gemmi gently. Gemmi was the elder lady bear, who had a kind heart, but wise manner. "Gently. He’s never even consciously used magic before this day, it isn’t going to come to him as quickly as it did for you..."
Aralia grumbled, but Gemmi reached her ghostly hands for Gruffi to help him up. Only in this timeless place could he touch a ghost by the hand.
"Come, let us try again, the hours are passing, and the King is being lead by forces too dark to imagine. You must protect Gusto, not only from the evils from without, but also from the evils from within..."
"Gusto..." Gruffi whispered, feeling a whole new source of energy suddenly filling the places that before had seemed strained and weak.
"Yes that’s it!" said the women, "Think of Gusto! Think of Your King! Your Love!"
"Think of my...Gusto..." Gruffi said, and a new sense of possessiveness came over him.
He stood, raising his ring arm, and the shield was raised almost instantly, and thick and hot with energy, and visible like a glass dome to the eye. Gruffi knew, almost instinctively, how strong this shield was. It would hold.
Gemmi smiled, and Aralia raised her hands.
"Now the real training begins!"

Gusto could not believe his eyes. He had imagined his ancestors were Wizards, as Denni had said, but he could have never imagined that they would appear in the form of dragons.
"This is our ultimate power, Gusto...The Dagger gives the strength of Dragons to the Soul..."
"But..." Gusto was looking up into the eyes of the hugest dragon…dark green, almost dripping with power and energy; this was the eldest of them all, and the darkest. "Weren’t you a Gummi Bear once?"
"We all were, but our power gives us the ability to transform into the ultimate forms..." The Dragon smiled down ominously from above. "In exchange of death, we traded up our power for the life of the most powerful creatures in existence..."
"And that...that is the Dagger’s power?"
Confusion swept through him, and the lead Dragon shook his head.
"You are young and strong, but a little naive. But we shall work on that. No, the Dagger’s true power is not in being a Dragon, the Dragon form comes with the Magical Arts we practice...The true power of the Dagger, THAT has always, and forever will remain a mystery. However...Tonight you will use the Dagger's minor abilities to enhance the magic we will teach you..."
Gusto felt even more confusion, and pulled the Dagger out, to look at it. Still a Mystery. Forever. Why did that not seem right?
"Think of your dagger as the Weapon it is...it can protect, and it can defend, but ultimately, it destroys. To destroy that which is blocking the path between You and your Destiny, you must use the dagger. Raise it, and we will fight you..."
There was no warning, or not time to prepare, a bolt of green lightening erupted from the Dragon’s eyes, and Gusto found himself on the ground, Dagger raised to defend himself, fierce energy exploding around him, bouncing off the dagger, and crashing against the walls.
"Yes...he does well at defence...Offence will take much time..." Denni decided.
"We haven’t much time..." the Elder Dragon warned. “Ursalia’s Light already trains the Ring Bearer as we speak..."
Gruffi... Gusto thought, raising his eyes towards the sky above.
Suddenly, the minor shield he had raised collapsed, and energy filled the tip of the dagger, elongating it, shaping it, changing its form, shattering the darkness around him with a bright blue light!
"Yes!" exclaimed the Dragon. “Raise your sword against the light which would destroy us all, young King! It is your destiny!"
No, thought Gusto, momentarily blinded by the light of his own sword. Gruffi is…GRUFFI!
With that thought, and the shock and outrage plain on the faces of the Dragons, Gusto turned and fled. He fled from the monument, from the dark magic, and from the pounding of Denni’s feet chasing anxiously after him. He fled towards the Castle...
Towards Gruffi. Gruffi was in danger! Gusto had to protect him, save him, before it was too late!

Gruffi didn’t know how he’d survived. The sheer amounts of energy the Ghost Queens had thrown at him had been enormous. But he held. He held his shield. He held Gusto in his heart and mind. Gusto, his energy, his pure force, his light. Gusto was the source behind his power, of that he could be sure, without Gusto...he was nothing. Without their love, he could do nothing. Love was the true source of his power, he could feel it, feel the wielding of it in his chest like holding his breath under water for too long, that it would burst from his chest and explode if he ever released that feeling, spoke it out loud.
"You are ready," said a female voice. Gruffi looked up, and he was back in his room, alone with Delphi, but still, alone. There was a weight in his gut, and it was an alarming one.
"Yes, yes, I think you are ready..."
Gruffi’s thoughts were cut off when the door flew open, and Gusto rushed in.
"We have to leave now. We have to go! Its not safe here!"
"I know," Gruffi said, alarmed, cause somehow he did know. "It's time to fix Ursalia...right?"
Gusto looked blank.
"Yeah, sure Gruffi. I’ll go tell the others we’re going to leave..."
He was suddenly alone again with Delphi, and he couldn’t help the tears now, and the humiliating thought of what Gusto would THINK of him when he realized what they would have to DO to save the Kingdom of Ursalia.
"Don’t give it another thought," said Delphi. "He has been prepared, and so have you. Go on now. I will try to keep my other half here as long as I can..."
