Chapter 47: Contemplation
****This chapter is dedicated to Invader Monkey, Tamago, and Squeechan, my new reviewy-peeps of DOOM! *lurve*
Zim tossed and turned restlessly, unable to sleep. His confrontation with the Dib-human was running over and over in his head, which was making him angry, which was keeping him awake. He would never admit it, but Dib’s words had hurt him deeply. Couldn’t the stupid human understand that soldiers of the Irken Elite weren’t prone to expressing emotion? It was a weakness that skilled Invaders could not afford to have. And love was even worse; love was dangerous, because it could be used to blackmail and manipulate. It was a serious threat to an Invader’s mission.
He cared about Dib, yes, but could he take the risk of loving him? He knew he couldn’t deny that in the time he had spent in Dib’s company since the human came to him with his proposal for alliance, he had developed…positive feelings towards him. Zim had grown to like him, to like his sadistic hunger for destruction. Destruction was nice! And he admired the human’s loyalty and tenacity. But could he honestly admit to something as utterly dangerous as love?
Perhaps that question should be asked differently…
Would it upset him if he were to lose the Dib? He considered the question for only a moment before he decided that it would. It would make him very, very sad if he were to lose Dib. He enjoyed Dib’s presence, and enjoyed having a laugh at his expense every now and again, which the human didn’t seem to mind all that much. And most of all…he enjoyed what Dib did to him; the way Dib made him feel was unlike anything he’d ever experienced before. He’d already told the Dib-human that he made him want to breed, which was a desire almost unheard of in members of the Invader Class. Thus Dib was unique in his ability to…stimulate him. Just thinking about their encounters made Zim’s heart beat faster and gave him a tingling sensation in the pit of his squeedlyspooch.
Whether or not he used the term love to describe his feelings towards Dib, it was undeniable that he cared for the human, and cared for him deeply.
As he reached this conclusion, he replayed the confrontation with Dib in his head and scowled. How could the Dib accuse Zim of not having feelings for him?! Wasn’t it painfully obvious? Didn’t Zim come and rescue him when he was taken prisoner? Hadn’t Zim been his first partner, sexually? And hadn’t Zim accepted his proposal for alliance, and allowed the human to stay within his base, and even cared for his injured shoulder after interrogating him at the police station? He had risked his life for that human by leaving the base without his pak, in order to rescue the miserable little stinkbeast! How dare he accuse Zim of not caring about him!
He tossed the blanket aside, getting up and walking into the Dib’s quarters, about to wake him up and give him a piece of his mind, when he caught sight of something out of the corner of his eye. He walked over to Dib’s bedside table, looking at the red rose that was now sitting in a glass full of water, which the Dib had probably gotten from GIR.
Why did that sight make him so…not angry any more? His antennae twitched in confusion, and he looked down at Dib, who was curled in a ball at the far side of the bed, his arms wrapped around something. Zim stepped closer, sighing and shaking his head when he saw the lump wearing a familiar green doggy suit.
“GIR, what are you doing in here?” he hissed irritably.
The little green dog sat up, rubbing its eyes and then blinking at Zim. “What?”
“What are you doing in here?”
GIR pointed at Dib, who was still sound asleep, although his expression was all but peaceful. “Big-head boy was lonely…and sad. He’s allll in love with you.”
Zim snorted, rolling his eyes. “How would YOU know?”
GIR pointed at Dib again. “He told me! But he said I’m not supposed to tell. He saided that you don’t care.”
Zim blinked at the little robot, then looked down at Dib. When he looked back at GIR again, his expression was strained with awkwardness. “All right, GIR…go and…uh…go and watch the human infomercials.”
“Okeedokie!!” GIR jumped off of the bed and ran out of the room.
Zim stuck his head out the door and shouted after him. “AND NO BUYING ANYTHING THIS TIME!!!” Walking back over to Dib’s bed, Zim sat down on the edge, watching the human sleep. What in Irk could possibly have made the human confess those things to GIR? Dib had obviously been upset, but…was it possible Dib was telling the truth? That he loved him? Zim reached out and brushed Dib’s hair back behind one ear, contemplating his features for a long time. Even in sleep, Dib’s expression was strained, and the human began to toss and turn. Not knowing what to do, Zim slid under the covers and stretched out beside him, gently wrapping an arm around his waist. He stroked Dib’s bare stomach and nuzzled the back of his head, surprised when the human’s restless stirring stopped and Dib rolled over and curled up against him. Curious, Zim lifted one of the human’s eyelids, watching for a few seconds before letting it slip closed again. Dib was definitely asleep. Now Zim was truly puzzled…how could the human be aware of him in his sleep? He sighed, tucking Dib’s head under his chin and stroking his back pensively. The longer he lay there with Dib in his arms, the less he began to think about it, until he drifted off to sleep.
**********
Dib woke late in the morning, sighing heavily. It was the first morning in weeks that he felt too depressed to get out of bed. But his stomach rumbled, and he knew he’d have to get up eventually. Oh well…he could always come back to bed after he ate. It wasn’t like Zim really needed him around, right? He reached out and picked up his glasses off the bedside table, putting them on and sitting up, his whole body feeling like it was weighted down by lead. It was then that his eyes widened in shock.
There were roses everywhere. Red ones. There were at least two dozen scattered over the bed, and the glass on the bedside table was full of them.
Dib pulled his clothes on and ran out of his room, tripping over GIR and landing on his hands and knees. He turned, grabbing the little robot and shaking him. “GIR!! Where’s Zim?”
GIR blinked at him, then shrugged. “I dunno.”
Dib held his breath for a moment, then looked around. “GIR, there are flowers in my room. Who are they from?”
“Oh, those are from Master.”
Dib nodded, then ran off down the corridor. “Computer—where’s Zim?”
“Repair bay—wait, am I supposed to answer to you?”
****************
Zim pulled one of the tool cords down, using it to cut some of the damaged material out of one of the rear thrusters on Tak’s ship. Tossing the scrap aside, he let the tool cord slide back into the overhead pod and reached up for another one, uttering a startled yell and staggering back when someone jumped on him. He instinctively raised his fists and extended his spider-legs, until he realized a split second later that it was Dib, with his arms wrapped tightly around his neck. Zim sighed, his spider-legs sliding back into his pak as he relaxed again, smiling a little.
“It’s about time you woke up, Dib-human. I thought you were going to sleep all day.”
“I…I was going to…” Dib swallowed hard, stroking the nape of Zim’s neck. “I’m sorry…”
Zim quirked an antenna. “For what?”
Dib took a shaky breath. “For freaking out at you last night. You didn’t deserve that.”
“No, I didn’t.”
Dib smiled in spite of himself. That was the stuck-up prick of an Invader he’d fallen in love with. He sighed, brushing his lips over the side of Zim’s neck. “Thank you for the roses…they’re beautiful…I…I’ve never had anyone do something like that for me.” Dib blushed, sighing and moving his arms down to wrap around Zim’s waist as he rested his head against Zim’s chest.
Zim nodded and stroked the nape of Dib’s neck, although his expression was distant and somewhat pained. He couldn’t say it. He couldn’t say the one thing that the Dib wanted to hear most.
At least not yet…
