Chapter 44: Fool’s Gold
As the sun drifted towards the horizon and the time for the conference with the United Countries drew near, Zim entered the lab with GIR following close behind, the small robot carrying the lump of solidified copper, which Dib had spent over an hour cleaning and polishing.
“Over there, GIR. Put it on the table.”
“YES SIR!!” GIR dropped the lump of metal on the table, then stood at attention, his eyes glowing red.
“All right, GIR, good work. Run along, now…the Tallests mustn’t know that you’re working properly…they may suspect something. Go and watch television with the Dib-unit.”
“Okeedokie!” GIR’s eyes glowed green and he ran off. Zim took a deep breath and opened the line of communication to The Massive, waiting patiently for almost seven minutes before the transmission was finally answered.
“Do you know what time it is, Zim? You woke us up, for crying out loud. This had better be good.”
Zim bowed politely. “Forgive the intrusion, my Tallests, but I felt that this could not wait.”
“What else is new?” Red muttered, rolling his eyes and pulling his sleep-robe tighter around his body.
Zim bit back the irritation and dragged the large lump of copper in front of the view screen. “My Tallests, I have made a discovery…the humans have a secret that they have managed to keep from me up until now, which I stumbled upon quite by accident. There are mines run by the humans that run deep into the bowels of this filthy little planet…”
Purple and Red quirked their antennae, and Red spoke first. “Is that…”
“Yes.” Zim purred. “Irken gold. Their mining industry is almost entirely devoted to it, but only WE are aware of its true value. They simply use it to make cups and plates and other such useless trinkets.” He sneered. “Pathetic humans.”
Red and Purple nodded absently, then looked at one another for a long moment. This time it was Purple who spoke. “Well, that’s pretty interesting, I guess. You still shouldn’t have woken us up.”
“Again, my apologies, My Tallests.”
“Well, we’re going to go back to sleep. If you find any more, call us back.”
The transmission cut out, and Zim grinned, flicking on the tracking device. The Massive was changing course.
“Yes...” Zim purred, rubbing his hands together. “Onward, my Tallests…onward to your doom…” He laughed maniacally as he left the lab, leaving the lump of metal on the table.

Dib straightened his tie and then ran a hand through his hair. When he saw Zim’s face, he knew that things had gone well. “So, how long until they get here?”
Zim grinned, his eyes glittering with sadistic glee. “At full speed, the Massive could get here in under three months, but the Tallests rarely travel without the rest of the Armada, so it will probably take them about six months total to get here.”
Dib grinned, slipping his arms around Zim’s waist. “Excellent.”
Zim nodded. “What time is it?”
Dib checked his watch, then stepped back and pulled on his suit jacket. “Quarter to eight. We should get in there and get everything ready.”
Zim muttered something as he walked toward the lab, and Dib quirked a brow. “What did you just say?”
Zim turned, making sure his gloves were on snugly. “I said, ‘pity.’”
Dib blinked at him, then finished buttoning his coat jacket, following behind him. “Why is that?”
“Because I plan to celebrate.” Zim flashed Dib a meaningful grin. “And my plans may turn out to be…time-consuming.”
“Oh.” Dib felt his cheeks grow warm, and he cleared his throat, shaking his head. “Great, now I’m going to have to sit through our meeting with THAT running through my head. You really are a jerk, you know.”
Zim snickered. “I just like to make you squirm, Dib-monkey.”
“Yeah, in more ways than one.” Dib muttered, shaking his head as they walked into the lab. “Just make sure you keep the transmission view above waist-level. I don’t think I’d be able to keep a straight face if all the world’s most powerful leaders knew I had a hard-on while I was addressing them.”
