Eve grins and breathes deeply, loving the smell of hay and horse as she steps into the barn. She leans her head against Owen’s arm, leading him to the stalls at the end of the aisle. “I spent most of my childhood running around this barn. There’s probably still a place set up in the loft where I would spend my evenings reading books.”
He gently runs a finger down her cheek, glad to see her happy. “Perhaps we should look for it while we are here. I am sure I can find a few books we could read to each other.” She laughs and swats at him. “Are you sure that is all you want to do?” He winks at her. “Of course not.” “Beast.” She purrs back at him as they reach the last two stalls. Justin looks up as they approach, settling a saddle on a rack beside the stall. “Your tack is ready and I have saddlebags with everything you will need attached.” “Justin you are a saint!” She hugs him and quickly runs out to the corral, looking towards the west. Justin eyes Owen warily. “Have you rode a stallion before?” “Yes.” Owen watches Eve, waiting to see what she is looking for. “Who will I be riding again?” “Warrior Spirit and Evelyn will be on Thunder Dance.” Justin opens the stalls and fills the buckets with grain. “May I ask the significance of their names?” Owen leans against the door. Justin appraises him for a moment. Satisfied, he nods and hands Owen a halter. “Thunder Dance is named for the prancing and pawing he does before every storm. He can smell them on the wind and lets us know.” He walks towards the barn doorway, watching Eve as she opens a gate between the corral and forest beyond it. “Warrior Spirit was named by my Grandfather. He said once that he could see the spirit of a warrior inside him. Those two have always protected Evelyn as if she is their precious foal.” Owen hears the thunder of hooves and looks over to see a white horse racing head of a black horse through the trees towards Eve. Eve doesn’t move but opens her arms to them. He tenses, waiting for her to be trampled. Instead, each horse circles her, rearing and sniffing her around her. “Brothers, be at ease.” She calmly strokes their bodies as they pass her, still circling. Suddenly the white one looks up at Owen, pawing the ground in challenge. Eve puts her hand on his shoulder, confused. “Warrior, be calm. He is my boyfriend.” Owen stares into the stallion’s eyes, recognizing the elven horse for what he is. “How?” He whisper’s softly, shocked. He steps into the corral, unconcerned for the danger he may be in. Thunder stops as well, watching Owen as he quietly approaches them. With a snort, he begins pawing the ground as well. Owen stops, opening his arms to them. Warrior’s nose flares, catching Owen’s scent, and he slowly steps forward. Snuffling him thoroughly, each horse winds its way around him as if they were cats rubbing along a favorite person. Owen lowers his barriers, letting each smell his true self as they rub against him. Eve stares in confusion, having never seen the horses act this way before. “Owen?” She calls, afraid to break the spell. Suddenly the horses stop, each facing towards him. They lower one leg, arching their necks down in a bow. Owen touches each one on the shoulder. “None of that, My Lords. I am only here to be with my mate.” Thunder stands again, stomping his foot in agitation. Owen holds his hands up in surrender. “Forgive me. I am following human customs. Suffice it to say that in my heart she is my queen. Acceptable?” Thunder snorts and then turns back to Eve, nibbling contentedly at her hair. She strokes his neck. “Do I want to know what that was about?” “Only if you can explain how you acquired two elven stallions.” He lifts a brow at her. Her mouth drops open. “Two what?” She glances between the horses, realization dawning on her. “Perhaps we should talk about this after we get out on the trail.” Owen nods and turns back to Warrior. “May I be allowed the honor of riding you while Eve checks on your mares?” Warrior nods his head and walks towards his stall, Justin shocked as he opens the gate for the horses. Eve pats Justin’s shoulder as they walk by and tells him he can head back home once everyone else is fed. Justin nods, walking away from the barn and back to his truck. Eve rides down a narrow trail, following a small stream along the edge of the woods for over an hour. Her thoughts spin as she thinks about what Owen had called Thunder and Warrior, fear creeping up her spine. Owen’s silence as they ride only bothers her more, wondering if he is angry at her. She finally clears her throat, ready for the silence to end. “Grandfather never told me much about these two. He would only say they were a gift to watch over us for something he had done.” She glances back and sees Owen gazing into the trees. “I never knew what that something was. I grew up with Thunder being my best friend and Warrior being my protector.” She sighs. “Thinking back now, I should’ve known they weren’t regular horses, especially after the grotto.” Owen lifts a brow, intrigued but wary, as he hears light steps following them. “And what exactly is the grotto?” “You’ll see.” She smiles weakly at him. “It’s why I wasn’t really afraid when I first met Goliath and his clan. I grew up seeing what most would believe is myth.” His eyes rivet on her, wondering what she is keeping from him and growing more nervous by the moment. “Such as?” “You’ll see for yourself.” Thunder turns onto a second trail, following a second stream. “We’re almost there.” She glances back and realizes he’s watching her warily now. “You have to trust me, Owen. Have I done anything to break your trust yet?” He slowly relaxes. “No.” The stream feeds into a small pond surrounded by large oaks. She dismounts and quickly pulls the tack off of Thunder. “We’re here. I’ll set out the food while we wait.” He follows her example and soon Warrior is grazing with Thunder near the pond. Eve lays out a blanket, emptying the saddle bags of small sandwiches, apples, and bottles of water onto it. She sits down, watching him pace along the tree line. She sighs, laying down and gazing across the water. “I’m sorry if I’ve made you nervous.” She closes her eyes. “It wasn’t my intention.” He stops pacing and looks back at her. “We were followed here.” “I know.” She opens her eyes and glances around. “By whom?” His voice drops, anger slightly showing. “By your kinsmen, of course.” A soft voice comes from the trees as a beautiful woman with chestnut hair steps from the trees. “My sisters heard of your arrival, My Lord. We have been anxiously awaiting you.” His eyes widen as the dryad is joined by more melting away from the trees. Soon the whole grotto is filled with dryads, sprites, pixies, and nymphs. He steps back, his hand reaching out for Eve. Seeing his distress, she leaves the blanket and grabs his hand. He glances around. “I am not your Lord. I have been cast out, stripped of my magic.” Eve’s eyes widen in shock. “You never told me that.” Nalyah steps forward, smiling. “Oberon is a fool. As you can see, we have not heeded his call.” She sweeps her arm, encompassing the group before him. “We are few but we are safe here. Evelyn’s grandsire made sure of that.” Owen’s body starts to relax as he pulls Eve into his arms. “The spells around this place is why I feel as if I should be calm and relaxed here.” He glances down at her, placing a soft kiss on her forehead. “You said it was protected but I didn’t understand the extent.” “Even Oberon cannot enter here unless he is asked.” Nalyah winks. “We made sure of this before we made our sanctuary here.” “Thunder and Warrior?” He lifts a brow and glances around the gathering. “How do they come in?” “Two colts to start a new line.” An older looking woman steps from the trees, leaning heavily on a cane. “Their sire’s gift to protect Evelyn’s family as they protect us.” Eve steps away from Owen and helps the older woman to the blanket, offering her water. “Grandmother Willow, you shouldn’t be here.” “My tree is strong yet and I had to see who you brought, young one.” She waves Eve away and sips at the water. “Go back to your young Lord and leave me here to rest for a while. I will be fine.” Her cane lifts and points at Owen. “And none of your disguises here, Boy! There will be no trickery in my forest!” “Yes, Grandmother.” He quickly changes into Puck as Eve beckons him back to the blanket. He settles down next to Eve. “Will you tell me the story of this place, Grandmother?” “One story in exchange for another.” Willow smiles and taps her cane on the ground. “Attend youngsters for I will not repeat myself!” She glances around the gathering. Satisfied, she tells the tale of how she met a young wizard once who vowed to protect her. Eve quickly realizes this is the story of how her Grandfather came here and how the small farm soon grew, protections widening with each year. When the story is done, Grandmother eyes Puck expectantly. He ducks his head and quietly at first tells of how he met David Zanatos. As the story moves on, he becomes less reluctant and soon finds himself telling how he lost everything protecting Alexander. He hears Eve’s gasp of shock and pulls her closer to him, gently stroking her hair. Grandmother Willow smiles at this small gesture, urging him to continue. He finally ends with how he met Eve and the reason for their trip here. “It does explain why Titania has been walking the borders.” Nalyah offers. “Perhaps.” Grandmother stands, sighing heavily. “I am sure she will keep her reasoning to herself as always. For now, I am growing tired and must rest in my tree.” She walks back towards the forest only to stop just outside it, glancing back at Puck. “You will see me before you head back to the city, Boy.” “Of course.” He agrees, knowing there is no use in refusing an order. He waves his hands, shooing the rest of the watchers away. Eve watches as the rest of the Fae disappear as quickly as the appeared. He everything becomes quiet again, she sighs softly and turns towards him. “You never told me all of this. Why didn’t you tell me?” “Tell you my sister effectively neutered me?” He shakes his head. “I am not a fool. If the wrong person found out, I’d be a slave.” “That explains several things but that doesn’t explain…” She frowns and leans away from him. “Your hand! She said you were hers!” Eve growls out. “And if she’s Fox’s mother and Xander calls you uncle…” She stares at him in shock. “Titania is Fox’s mother? I challenged the queen of the Fae?” He chuckles in amusement. “My Kitten has finally realized where she has sunk her teeth! Yes, Eve, you did indeed challenge my sister!” He winks and strokes her cheek. “But I do believe she respects you for it or you wouldn’t be here with me.” “I feel like an idiot.” She leans against his shoulder. He pulls her into his lap, taking her face in his hands. “Never say that again. You are not an idiot.” He kisses her softly. “Ignorant of some things but never an idiot.” He kisses her again, pulling her even closer to him. She moans against his lips, curling even tighter around him. “Why do you love me?” She murmurs. He grins, tickling her sides. “You are sexy, brilliant, and fun to play with.” “Play with?” She laughs, squirming away from him. “Is that what I am? A toy?” She glares at him in mock anger, lip pouting out. He grabs her, pinning her to the blanket. “My toy.” He nips at her lip, grinding against her. “I do not share what is mine.” He growls softly, claiming her lips again. Thunder’s head jerks up, looking off towards the pond. Warrior snorts, stomping his hoof and getting Puck’s attention. He looks up, eyes narrowing at a brownie barreling towards them. The brownie stops as Thunder calls a challenge, eyes wide in fright. “Miss Eve! Miss Eve! Come! Mystique needs you!” Eve pushes Puck away and quickly stands. “Show me.” Thunder trots over, lowering his shoulder for her to jump on his back. Puck growls as he leaps up onto Warrior, following the brownie as it weaves its way back towards the forest.
