He should have seen this happening, of course, Adrien would want to go to a ‘Prom’ of all things. Gabriel was loathed to allow his son to attend but prom was a concept that French schools usually didn’t have and Adrien had looked so excited and fearful about his answer. Of course, Gabriel had said yes, with that pout Adrien had looked so much like his mother and he’d always been weak to that look.
What he shouldn’t have done was agreeing to chaperone the young men and women, it would only be for an hour, the parents were taking shifts since quite a few were busy people like himself.
Most of the participants had frozen when Marinette Dupain-Cheng had step foot into the temporary ballroom, she had a beautiful blue Tulle Off-the-Shoulder Sleeveless Applique Brush Train Ball Gown on that he was certain the brilliant young woman had made herself if the bandages on her fingers were any indicator and a silvery mask that didn’t hide who she was gracing her face.
She took his breath away, he’d noticed how red she’d turned around him and at first he thought it was because she’d been flirting with Adrien but eventually he realized she only turned that bright red around him of all people! It shouldn’t have filled him with such warmth, but he’d gotten used to her in his home, and a few times when she had come to say goodbye to him they’d get caught up talking about fashion.
It took Gabriel far too long to realize she had a crush on him and even more time to realize that he hadn’t necessarily been bothered by it. He should have been given how young she was, she was barely legal for god sake, and his son’s best friend. Gabriel was also certain Adrien harbored feelings for her too but it was a blink-and-miss-it kind of thing. He doubted Marinette knew about Adrien’s feelings or the ones he’d been harboring for the feisty young woman.
He’d felt guilty at first for realizing that he thought of her as more than just a friend of Adrien’s. It helped that she was headstrong and had a fantastic eye for fashion that if given time and the assets would rival and surpass him. Gabriel had begun wondering how soft her lips were, had liked the way she laughed or the way her eyes lit up when talking about fashion or baking.
She smiled and her father let her go. She had rushed to her friends and a few of them shook out of the shock and cheerfully embraced her. Others were however whispering behind their hands, eyes on Marinette like she was a dangerous snake. Trials and tribulations of teenagehood, she didn’t notice at first but when some of her so-called friends had said she was overdressed or took this dance too seriously she’d frowned.
Others at that point had no trouble telling her similar things or scoffing at her, it was clear how much it hurt her feelings and how much her father really wanted to tell them off but knew it wasn’t his place to say anything and if he did he would only embarrass his daughter. The man could sometimes be unpredictable but he had a kind heart, he and his wife had taught their daughter to be the same way.
What troubled him was the way it looked like Adrien and Marinette were having words with each other, He’d never witnessed them fight and Marinette stormed off to the balcony. He’d carefully made his way after her, taking his time and making it look like he was just making his rounds.
Marinette was sitting in one of the chairs that dotted the place for people to come outside and enjoy the fresh air and the beautiful view. Fairly lights and her beautiful dress made the sight of her crying pretty and sad. She hiccuped and laughed suddenly.
“Tikki I’m so stupid.” A kwami appeared and Gabriel’s heart stopped. Marinette was...Oh god. Marinette was Ladybug. He had been so close and had never known! His back hit the wall he’d been observing Marinette around, a hand over his mouth.
How had he not noticed, she was always so busy, and dear god they had both had quite a few close calls over the years hadn’t they? But he’d been blind and now. Now he couldn’t imagine hurting her, because somehow he’d practically fallen in love with how kind and beautiful her soul was. Fear crept into his heart if she found out he was Hawkmoth...What would she do? How could she possibly accept him, how could he have her in his life now that he knew he’d been the cause of so much pain?
Even in his shock, he noticed none of her friends had shown up yet, he doubted they would arrive any time soon if they were the reason she’d come out here...She was still upset and her Kwami wasn’t in sight now… He could never make up for all the hurts he’d bestow on her but he could at least fix one thing. Gabriel made his way to her, the dress would be dirty if she kept sitting like that. Not that it should matter given how distressed she was, but she’d put her blood, sweat, and dreams into that dress.
He knelt at her side and she started, eyes wide and he finally understood why she’d gotten so much flack from the others. Everyone even now avoided butterflies but she hadn’t, she had dainty little earrings on that were beautiful little crystal butterflies and her hair clip he hadn’t noticed from a distance was also a butterfly. She was so forgiving and beautiful and dear god how had he gotten her attention?
“I uh…” He snorted at her attempt at talking and swept the edges of her dress from the ground.
“Take care of how you sit, your work is far too beautiful to be sullied.” And this close she was a brilliant artist, seams were perfect and the delicate material molded just so to make her dress streamlined. Yes, she was a wonderful fashionista with a fantastic eye for fashion.
“Thank you.” He let the corner of his mouth lift in a small smile, her eyes lighting up at the smile, and threw him one of her own. He brushed off his slacks and sat in the chair across from her, admiring the way she looked in the dress.
“How long did it take you to make it?” She giggled and picked at her bandages, glittery nails shimmering dimly in the fairy lights.
“A week, I kind of didn’t sleep or do anything else except go to school of course but I didn’t even do that well considering how uh sleep deprived I was.” She let out in a rush and he could believe it. How many times had he spent so much time obsessed with making something perfect that he forgot everything else, including eating and sleeping?
“It makes you look like a Tuatha Dé Danann pulled into the human world for a single night of dancing, bound to go back to the Tír na nÓg.” Marinette hummed, utterly focused on him.
“What’s that?” He smirked and leaned forward like he was sharing a secret with her.
“The underworld, where the Tuatha Dé Danann live. It’s said to be a paradise, and the Tuatha Dé Danann were said to be the most beautiful creatures.” She giggled, a blush spreading across her face. There was glitter in her lip gloss and eyeshadow, she was truly beautiful like this but this was hardly appropriate the way he was flirting with her, and he was wasn’t he? Comparing her to Tuatha Dé Danann of all things.
But it was her that had brought him back from the brink of true madness, and as much as he cared about Nathalie she had only enabled him to be Hawkmoth. She hadn’t attempted to tell him to stop, only told him she’d help and in the long run, he should have known that he was going to end up hating himself and Nathalie. He didn’t surprisingly hate her, Marinette had a hand in that actually...She didn’t hate Hawkmoth either, she thought he was misunderstood.
Gabriel wasn’t misunderstood, not really. He was a possessive man, and too stupid to see how manipulative his dear wife had been. She’d known what was happening before she told him, and she’d used his love for her against him. Somewhere he still loved her, but Marinette was bringing his heart back from its shriveled and ruined state.
He stood and held out a hand to her, she blinked her jaw-dropping. He hoped that was shock and not disgust. He shouldn’t have even worried as she all but threw herself into his arms with a delighted laugh. The music from inside was muted but at least he could offer one good thing tonight, as rusty as he liked to pretend to be he was actually surprised how well she danced with him. They moved together easily, he’d danced with few people that weren’t intimidated by his reputation, his stature, or his keen gaze.
Often he got stepped on, but here she was dancing as if they did this every other day. Where was the clumsy girl she had once been? Lost to time no doubt, or she would eventually trip up for some reason or other.
“Thank you, I didn’t...No one could understand why I wanted to remember.” Remember?
“Marinette?” She smiled softly, he could kiss her like this. Sweep her off her feet and kiss until the tears were gone and forgotten.
“The butterflies, they couldn’t understand why I might want to bring a part of Hawkmoth with me here. I. I wish that I could have helped him with whatever was plaguing him, I feel like I should have tried to help him.” Her eyes were filled with tears again.
“I tried in my own way I guess, but it never felt like enough.” It almost sounded like she knew...But, how could that be possible? He had hidden as much as he could and he had thought no one knew?
“You act like you know who?” Those beautiful ocean blue eyes looked up at him. A determination burning in those eyes, did she actually know? Was that why she had been so kind to him?
“You were always so busy, but I. I found out and I still. I still loved you even though you had hurt so many people. You stopped on your own, and I thought maybe you were changing. I just didn’t think until Tikki pointed out that you started changing once I started interacting with you.”
He’d been too obvious to her, she’d gotten closer to him than anyone before other than Emilie.
“Now what will you do Ladybug that you know who your enemy is?” She tilted her head, eyes still intense.
“Are we?” He didn’t want to be, and he no longer knew how he would try to take the miraculous from her because he couldn’t even fathom hurting Marinette again.
“No. No, we’re not enemies anymore.” There was a loud bang and laughter from inside, causing them both to start. Marinette let out a shaky laugh and he relaxed, there was nothing to be worried about.
“I’m glad we’re not enemies anymore, it’d make having a crush on you way more embarrassing.” Had she really just? Marinette gasped and slapped her hands over her mouth. No, she hadn’t meant to say that. But it sent warmth through his chest, his heartbeat picking up just a bit.
“Embarrassing or hard to accept?” She blinked and let out a breath.
“I shouldn’t be surprised that you noticed, Adrien noticed...But, he didn’t realize what he was seeing wasn’t admiration. Not that I uh don’t admire you!” He chuckled as she became flustered and gushed words.
“What would be embarrassing would be a middle-aged man with a crush on a just turned Nineteen-year-old friend of his son’s.”
A softer look took over her face, “Would those embarrassing people be able to be embarrassed together?” That was something they could talk about if she really wanted to try. How could he say no to this Tuatha Dé Danann meant to tempt him?
“I would think they would have a long conversation about how it would work out, how Adrien might take it once he was told…” She let out a breath.
“I never thought you might...I thought it was hopeless.” He thought he’d never love again and yet here they were. Love might bloom or it might rot away, could he take the chance? He’d already been burned hadn’t he? Emilie might have loved him but then she used him, he knew Marinette wouldn’t use him but...Could she really handle knowing he’d been her enemy?
She was still so fragile and he didn’t want to scare her off… He pressed a kiss to her palm. A promise if she understood it, he wanted to be in her life and he wanted her in his.
