Lilo spent mere seconds traveling through a time vortex, an endless void plane of shifting colored patterns. But by the time the surfboard had re-appeared back in the bedroom, seventeen years had passed. Lilo was thrown from the board as it landed, and she crashed against the wall.
"Did it work?" she asked herself as she rubbed the spot where she had hit her head. She looked at the present date on the engine's display: 2021. She had landed in Jumba & Pleakly's room, in her house, far into the future.
"Hello, Lilo," a voice came from the opening bedroom door, and Lilo looked up at the smiling older woman standing in the doorway.
"Nani?" Lilo asked.
"Guess again," the woman chuckled. Lilo's eyes traveled up and down the length of the woman. They grew wide when the realization hit her. Her eyes went wide as she recognized her older self.
"You're... you're..." she started.
"You," the woman smiled. She dropped to one knee in front of her younger self.
"How'd you know I'd be here?" Lilo asked.
"Because I remember this," the older Lilo smiled. "I remember being you, traveling through time, and meeting me here. I know it's confusing. But trust me, you figure it out."
"I... I..." Lilo was at a loss for words. She didn't know where to start.
"You've got questions, Lilo, I know," her older self said. "Come with me."
The older Lilo led her younger self through the house. Not much had changed in seventeen years. She noticed new wallpaper and photos hanging on the wall, but the house was relatively the same.
"I still live here?" she asked.
"No, this is still Nani's house," her older self replied. "She and David live here now, with their...." Older Lilo cut herself off, dropping her sentence and shaking her head.
"Their... what?" Lilo asked.
"I'm sorry, Lilo, I shouldn't tell you."
"Why not?" Lilo folded her arms and stopped in the hallway.
"Because I never told me," older Lilo said. She knelt back down and placed her hand on the girl's shoulder. "Trust me, Lilo. I know exactly how this plays out. I'm your future, but you're also my past. Traveling through time and meeting yourself isn't exactly something you forget. Besides, some things are better left as a surprise."
"Oh..." Lilo said. She felt a little disappointed in herself. Not only was she hoping for answers, but she was also hoping for a glimpse into life in the future. "Maybe I should have found Skip and come visit you when I'm... well, you."
"It doesn't work like that, Lilo," the older Lilo said. "Trust me; you figure it out. But you did the right thing bringing Jumba's time machine here. We're going to need it."
"What?" Lilo asked. "You can't take the time machine! How will I get home?"
"I'll explain everything soon. There's someone who wants to meet you." The older Lilo stood back up and held out her arm to usher Lilo into the living room. Much like the hallway, it too had a new coat of paper on its walls. New furniture adorned the room, and sitting atop it next to another woman...
"STITCH!" Lilo cried.
"LILO!" The blue alien jumped off the sofa and ran into her arms. He was still exactly the same as he was when she left; he hadn't grown or appeared to age at all. The two embraced in a hug, and Lilo placed her lips upon his. With her tongue in his mouth, Stitch quickly yanked his head back and looked up at his life partner.
"It's fine, Stitch," older Lilo chuckled.
"And who are you?" the younger Lilo looked up at the woman on the couch.
"Take a guess," she smiled at her. Lilo furrowed her brow as she looked her over. She sat on the end seat with one leg crossed over the other. She looked younger than Lilo, but with a similar face, and a blue streak of hair highlighting the left side of her head. Lilo felt she was staring for just a moment too long, before her eyes went wide with realization.
"Ani?" she asked in disbelief.
"Hey, Mom," Ani smiled.
"You're... you're..." Lilo stammered.
"Older?" Ani chuckled.
"But... you're a girl. This is when you came from." Lilo said. The older Lilo sat beside her daughter and slipped her arm around her shoulder.
"Take a seat, Lilo," her older self said. "We've got a lot to talk about."
"Lilo, Ani wasn't fitting in well here. Her parentage... it made it difficult for her. And because I can't always be there for her at school, she needed someone who I know would look after her. And I remember Ani being happiest when she was with you."
"It's true," Ani smiled. "That trip changed my life... in many ways."
"Whoa, hold on," Lilo interrupted. "Happier with me? Not at home. And you," she pointed at the older Ani. "You're supposed to be younger than me. How are you all grown up?"
"There's no easy way to say this," the older Lilo said. "But I gave Ani up."
Lilo's eyes went wide.
"What?" she asked.
"It's true," the older Lilo nodded. "Me, Stitch, Nani, Jumba..." her voice trailed off for a moment. "Ani had an incredibly supportive family around her. But it wasn't enough. She was withdrawn, lonely at school, bullied, and depressed. And I couldn't tell her that she could defend herself without revealing her abilities. Sending Ani away was the hardest decision I had made. But that decision was already made for me. And it's one you have to prepare yourself to face."
"You're her mother!" Lilo almost screamed. She jumped off the couch and stamped her foot on the floor. She raised her finger at her older self, furious that she'd make such a decision. "You just abandoned her in the past? How could you do that?!"
"Lilo, Lilo, calm down," Stitch said. He moved beside her and placed his paw on her shoulder, but Lilo yanked her arm and shrugged him off.
"And you," she turned to the experiment. "You just let this happen?"
"Because I don't abandon her," older Lilo said. Despite the outburst of anger, she remained calm. All of Lilo's outrage suddenly vanished with the realization of what she meant. Her eyes went wide, her arm dropped. As the memories of the first moments of Ani's visit and the video message flooded Lilo's mind, it all became clear.
"You gave her to me," Lilo muttered.
"There wasn't anyone else I trusted more," the older Lilo said.
"You sent Ani back in time because you had to. Because you remember being me, and you remember her staying. Which means you also remember..." her eyes went wide again.
"Everything we did," older Lilo smiled. Lilo turned to Ani.
"And you're older because..."
"Because I chose to stay there," Ani smiled.
"Like I said, I gave Ani up," the older Lilo began. "But I gave her up to you, the one person who I could trust to raise her right. I never abandoned her. She still got to grow up with her mother."
"And my best friend," Ani said. She turned her head to place a kiss on Lilo's lips.
"So... you stayed? With Stitch and me? And you were okay with that?" Lilo asked, her smile returning to her lips.
"Lilo," Ani began, "the week I spent with you was the start of an amazing childhood that only you and Stitch could have made possible when you were younger. I didn't have any friends before I arrived. You introduced me to Victoria, and now your mother and I are both…"
"Whoa, whoa, Ani." the older Lilo quickly cut her off and covered her mouth. "I just told her that some things are better as a surprise. Lilo's got to find things out for herself."
"Come on," Lilo sighed. "You gotta tell me something." Ani just laughed.
"What I will say is that when I stayed behind, I couldn't really be your daughter out in public. No one would understand and it would be too difficult to explain. So, you and I decided that I'd be your twin sister instead. You can thank Mertle for the idea."
"She did think we were sisters when we met her in town..." Lilo said to herself.
"Yep," older Lilo said. "Ani's my daughter and my twin. It definitely spiced up our relationship in the bedroom. Right, Stitch?"
"Oh yeah," the alien nodded as he rubbed his paws together. "Emba-chua!"
"So that means..." Lilo spoke again, and she looked up at Ani. "Your name... You were the twin you told me about?"
"Yep," Ani nodded. "Lilo, you named your daughter… after your daughter. I never knew my Aunt Ani was really me. I didn't realize I was growing up right beside my future self. Not until you came back from the future, from this trip, and told me when I was a girl. I even stood by your side in the hospital. I held your hand as you gave birth to me. I held myself when I was barely a few minutes old. Trust me; you haven't known weird until you see yourself being born."
"This is getting too much," Lilo gripped her head. "Let me get this straight. Ani was named after herself, grew up with her older self who she thought was her aunt, and then sent back in time to live with her younger mother... where she stayed."
"Yep," the older Lilo said. "That's pretty much it."
"And I thought those movies with the time-traveling car were confusing," Lilo muttered. She suddenly lifted her head as another thought dawned on her. "Wait, so where is the younger Ani now?" she asked. The older Lilo took a deep breath.
"She's with Nani and David," she said. "They've taken her out to lunch to say goodbye."
"Goodbye?" Lilo asked. "Where are they going."
"Nani and David aren't going anywhere," older Lilo sighed. Lilo detected a slight sniffle in her voice. "You remember I said we'd need your time machine?"
"Yeah..." Lilo cautiously said.
"Today's the day," Lilo wiped a tear from her eye. "Today is when we send Ani back in time."
*****
Thanks to Lilo's recent knowledge of Ani's arrival, she was able to assist herself with filming the video message while Ani went out to purchase the laptop. Lilo stood beside the cell phone as it filmed, silently interrupting herself and holding up signs of her and Nani's side.
"I don't know if these are exactly what we said, but I'm sure it's close enough," Lilo explained. As the video was being loaded onto the laptop, Lilo remembered the second message.
"Where's Jumba?" Lilo asked. "We need those birth control cloths from him." Older Lilo and Ani quickly shared a worrying glance. It was a look that did not escape Lilo's eye.
"What?" she asked worryingly.
"I think they're in his old room somewhere," Ani said, and she walked out into the hall.
"What is it?" Lilo asked herself.
"Do you remember where Jumba parked his spaceship?" the older Lilo sighed.
"Yeah..." Lilo cautiously said.
"Go there," older Lilo said. "The path has changed, but you'll find out. And make sure you wear a face mask."
"A face mask?" Lilo asked. "Why?"
"Lilo, you're playing around with your future here. The world isn't the same anymore. You might not be safe if you go outside without one."
"Not safe? From what?" she asked.
"Lilo, please trust me. Trust yourself. There's a box of masks by the front door. Put one on when you leave and keep your distance from anyone you see. I'd say you shouldn't go outside, but I know you will. Taking knowledge of the future back home is one thing. Catching something else and taking it back... that's something else."
"What would I catch?" Lilo asked. Older Lilo bit her lip. She opened her mouth to answer, but Ani almost burst into the room.
"Got 'em," she said, holding up a plain blue envelope. "And it looks like Jumba left us the formula to make more."
The second message was filmed and saved onto a computer card. Satisfied, Ani slipped it into the envelope and was about to seal it up.
"Wait," Lilo cried. "One more thing." She ran into the bedroom and removed the chip from the time machine. She still carried the surfboard casings in her dress pocket. Lilo dug them out and clipped them together, and with that snap came a moment of realization.
"You okay?" older Lilo asked as she walked into the room.
"Yeah..." Lilo said. "I just realized that I'm sending this back to myself. I only have this toy because I gave it to myself."
"I know," the older Lilo smiled. "Try not to think about it too much. It'll do your head in."
"Message from Nani," Ani called from down the hall. "They're on their way. And she's already packed her backpack. This is it."
"Stitch?" Older Lilo called. "Could you take the surfboard outside for us?"
"Accata!" Stitch ran into the room and effortlessly lifted the board, engine and all. "Meega on it!" He carried it out into the hall.
Lilo watched from the living room window as Nani and David drove up to the house. She kept her head low but watched as Ani, the young girl climbing out of the back seat. Lilo's heart almost jumped. Was she really prepared to go through with this? She was outside, about to give her daughter away... Lilo could stop it.
'I could run out there,' she thought to herself. She watched as Ani reluctantly accepted her backpack. Her head hung from her shoulders; she looked sad and depressed. Lilo watched Nani and David give her their last hug, followed by wiping the tears from their eyes. Older Ani smiled and placed her hand on Nani's shoulder. Lilo could see their lips moving, but she had no idea what they were saying.
"Guess I'll find out eventually," she muttered to herself. Older Lilo, Stitch, and the two Ani's climbed onto the surfboard, and Stitch pressed a button on its control screen. Nani and David hugged each other as the board, and its passengers rose off the ground and became surrounded in a soft blue glow. The engine whirred, and the board flew off, vanishing before their eyes.
"And that's it," Lilo sighed. She dropped her head into her arms. Lilo was torn. She had a fantastic week with Ani, and her older self spoke highly of growing up with her, but it still felt wrong. Lilo slumped down out of view of the window, and the box of masks caught her eye. Remembering her older self's warning, Lilo rose to her feet and pulled one out.
"Where Jumba's ship was parked..." she muttered. Lilo fitted the mask onto her face, slipped out the back door, and made her way into the forest.
*****
"I don't want to go," Ani sniffled. The time machine had just landed outside of Lilo & Nani's house, seventeen years in the past, late in the morning.
"Oh, Ani, I know you don't," her mother knelt before her young daughter and pulled her into a hug. Older Ani watched the loving embrace and noticed a tear running down Lilo's cheek. "But you'll have a great time here. I promise you."
"But I don't want to visit a younger you," Ani stamped her foot. "I want to stay with you and Aunt Ani! Can we just go home? Please?"
"Ani, Ani, Ani," the older Ani said. She, too, bent down beside her. "It'll only be for a week or so," she lied. "But if you really don't like it, we'll come back and get you."
"You promise?" young Ani asked with a sniffle.
"We promise," Lilo smiled. "Now remember, you'll see me when I was your age. Your aunt Nani won't be sure, but there's a machine in Jumba's old room that'll prove it. Okay?"
"Okay," Ani said. She then turned to her father. Stitch held out his arms and pulled her into a tight hug. He heard her sobbing into his fur, and they all knew why.
"You'll be fine," Stitch whispered to her. He gave her a soft kiss on her cheek as he rubbed her back with his paws. "Ani will be just fine."
Ani stepped off the board. With her backpack slung across her shoulders, she slowly made her way up the veranda steps. She stood in front of the door and sighed.
"Shol asahiah?" Stitch asked. He looked up at his daughter. Older Ani smiled and picked him up.
"Naga, Dad," she whispered as she hugged him close. "You never did." After a moment of hesitation on the porch, young Ani lifted her hand and rang the doorbell.
"She's here!" she heard a voice crying from inside the house; it sounded remarkably similar to her own. Ani turned to look at her family one last time. Her mother, her father, and herself all waved goodbye from the driveway. Ani turned her head just as the door opened.
"Um... Mom?" she asked nervously.
"That's our cue," older Lilo said. "Take us to yesterday, Stitch, and we'll deliver the laptop."
"Roger that," Stitch pressed the button on the engine's panel. By the time Ani turned her head back to the driveway, they were gone.
"What... what are you looking at?" young Lilo asked, looking out the front door.
"Nothing," Ani quietly sighed.
*****
The forest path had changed over the seventeen years; it was no longer as Lilo remembered. The roughly trodden trail was now a proper walking track and widened enough for a car to comfortably drive through. The soft grass had been replaced with sand and gravel that crunched underneath Lilo's sandals.
"I wasn't lying," Lilo muttered to herself as she trudged along. It took her only minutes to reach the clearing, and before long, she noticed the red paint of the ship's hull through the trees.
"It's still here," she cried. Lilo picked up her pace and ran the rest of the way. As she approached the clearing, it became clear to her that Jumba's ship hadn't moved in a very long time. The clearing's grass had grown unkempt around the landing gear and mid-section ramp. Its wings were littered with leaves and twigs, a bird had built its nest within one of the engines, and the once bright red and white paint had faded after sitting so long in the Hawaiian sun. Lilo stopped in her tracks before the ship. She gazed around at its state of disrepai
"What happened to you?" she asked the vessel. Lilo had fond memories of Jumba's ship, and it broke her heart to see it in this state. She ran up the ramp and banged her fist against the sealed door.
"Jumba?" she cried. "Are you in there?" Lilo waited several seconds, but the door remained closed.
"JUMBA!" she yelled again, banging harder against the door. "I used your time machine. I'm here about Ani!" But the door remained closed.
Lilo's heart sank. She knew something was wrong. She didn't know what, but that didn't stop a tear rolling down her cheek. She pounded her fist on the door one last time.
"OPEN THE DOOR!" she yelled and begged. "Please..." she muttered. Lilo sniffled and wiped her cheek. She turned around and walked back down the ramp. She hoped that Jumba had heard her and was rushing to the door to let her in. She could hear his excited cry of "Little girl!" in her mind. But the door remained closed.
Standing back on the grass, Lilo looked around. She knew that Jumba wouldn't let his ship decay like this; something was definitely wrong. Lilo ran out from underneath the ship and began to look around. A shed, a small house, something, anything to indicate Jumba was around...
"Oh no..." Lilo's jaw dropped as she spied a stone through the trees. She inhaled as she broke into a run towards the edge of the clearin
"No, no, no, no, no..." she heard herself saying, her tears forming in her eyes. Lilo slipped through the trees and ran to the small gap between them. She dropped to her knees in front of the large curved stone.
"Not again," she whimpered. Her tears flowed from her eyes and rolled down her cheeks beneath her mask as she read the inscription on the stone.
Dr. Jumba Jookiba
Arrived - 2002
Departed - March 3, 2018
Evil Genius, but forever Ohana
Lilo fell to her hands. Her fingers dug into the ground, and she clenched the grass of Jumba's grave within her fists. Her soft sobs echoed off the trees around her. She closed her eyes as tightly as she could, surrendering herself to the grief of the sudden loss. Lilo had no words, she couldn't bring herself to speak. The gravestone was adored with wilted flowers, and right in the middle, a familiar homemade stuffed toy. With a bow in its straw hair, buttons for eyes, and a stitched mouth, Lilo picked up Scrump from the stone. Like the ship, it too was showing signs of decay from being exposed to the elements. Its green fabric had become dull over the years outdoors, and there were small rips in the material. But Lilo didn't care. She hugged her childhood toy, now older than she was, as she let herself collapse on the ground.
Lilo lay crying in front of the grave. Jumba had been like a father to her, guiding and helping her through her childhood after her parents had passed away... and now she had lost him too. Deep down, she knew that Jumba was back home, alive and well, and she would see him again. But Lilo was here, now, in the future. Seeing his final place of rest and having it directly in front of her, Lilo couldn't stop herself.
"I'm sorry," she heard her voice behind her. Lilo quickly sat up and turned around. Her older self stepped through the trees, wearing a mask across her face.
"Why'd you let me come here?" she asked. "Why'd you tell me?"
"Because it's what I did," older Lilo sat on the ground and pulled her younger self into her lap. "You're my past, remember?" Young Lilo said nothing. She wrapped her arm around herself and sobbed into her shoulder. She felt her hand on the back of her head, her future long and slender fingers running gently through her hair. She pulled a tissue from her pocket and dabbed dry her crying eyes.
"How'd he die?" Lilo asked.
"He got sick," her older self spoke. "We couldn't help him. Quelte Quan couldn't help him. Not even the Federation could help him. It was just his time." Older Lilo picked up Scrump from her younger self's hands. She smiled at the toy before younger snatched it back and hugged it against her chest.
"What about the ship," she sobbed.
"None of us knew how to maintain it," older Lilo sighed. She glanced up at its hull through the treetops. "Stitch can fly it, but that's about it. And we don't know about fuel.... We could use it if we need to. Seeing it like this... it breaks my heart. But we don't know what we can do with it. So, we just keep it." The older Lilo wrapped her arms around the girl as she comforted her. She placed a gentle kiss on her head and began to sing.
Aloha `oe, aloha `oe. E ke onaona noho i ka lipo
One fond embrace, A ho`i a`e au.
Until we meet again
"Do you remember what Jumba said to us? Future Jumba, when we went back in time to save ourselves in front of Keoni?" older Lilo asked. The younger Lilo didn't answer; she just shook her head.
"He said if we dwell on the past, you cannot live in the present. And we'll lose sight of the future."
"I guess I remember that," Lilo sniffled.
"Lilo, you're going to go back home, and he'll be there waiting for you. This future will become your past, but you can't let yourself worry about what's ahead of you. You still have years to go before you become me. Jumba is still alive for you. And you'll see him again soon. As for Ani, don't feel bad about leaving her in the past. She does come home, Lilo. She just takes the long way around." Lilo looked up at her older self. Her concerns of abandoning her daughter seemed to vanish with those words. Her older self was right. Ani was home. She was always home. Young Lilo rose from the embrace and looked at her doll in her hands. She stepped over the older Lilo's legs and gently placed Scrump back against the gravestone. Older Lilo got to her feet and held out her hand.
"Come on," she smiled at herself. "I think it's time we sent you home."
*****
The surfboard lay on the ground in front of the house. Lilo entered the date and time of when she left onto the screen and stepped upon it. She took a moment to reflect on her brief time in the future. She had helped orchestrate everything that happened over the past week. Ani only came back in time because of her. She only knew about Ani because of her! And she and Stitch had only slept with Ani because of her.
"Well, this is it," she said. Nani and David stood by the board. Her older sister bent down and wrapped her arms around her.
"It's been a long time since I held you like this," Nani smiled. "Just promise me you'll try not to grow up too fast."
"I'll do my best," Lilo laughed.
"Would you give us a minute," the older Lilo asked. Nani and David nodded and turned to walk back into the house.
"See you in the past, Lilo!" David waved. Lilo turned to hug Stitch. He unfurled his arms, two wrapped around her and two paws gripping her ass.
"Stitch!" Lilo laughed. She pushed back into his grasp, letting the alien squeeze and grope her through her dress. Ani waited until Nani and David had gone inside before she knelt and lifted Lilo into her arms. She hugged the young girl against her chest.
"How are you feeling?" she asked. "Still conflicted on sending me back?"
"A little," Lilo said. "But it's in the past now. It's already happened"
"And she's still right here," older Lilo slipped her arm over her daughter's shoulder. "You're going to go back home, live your life with Stitch, and raise your daughter with you."
"Trust me, Mom," Ani smiled. "You did an amazing job. We had our ups and downs, but I can't thank you enough for everything you did." She lifted Lilo kiss her lips. "You never abandoned me. One way or another, my mother was always with me. And you were amazing."
"Ani, I have to ask. Did you...?" Lilo let her voice trail off as she pointed to her hair.
"This?" Ani chuckled. She ran her fingers through her blue streak of hair. "It's not dyed."
"But why blue?" the younger Lilo asked.
"Why do you think?" Ani asked. She looked down at Stitch. The blue streak in her hair matched perfectly with his blue fur.
"Ih, ih. It looks bootifa," Stitch grinned.
"It came in when I was a teenager," Ani said. "It just started growing out. But it's not just the blue. I got a few other things from my cute daddy."
"Watch out for those years, Lilo," the older Lilo said with a shudder. "No, seriously. Watch out for teenage Ani. She's a wild one."
"Oh, come on," Ani rolled her eyes. "We had some great times." She turned her head and kissed her mother's lips. "Some really great times."
"They were great for you. You didn't have to do damage control."
"Anything else you can tell me?" Lilo asked. "Before I go back?" The older Lilo and Ani glanced at each other, and Lilo knew straight away that they were withholding something important.
"I'll tell you one thing," the older Lilo said.
"Yeah?" Lilo asked.
"I remember being in Ani's arms, but I remember never expecting this to happen," older Lilo gently pulled her older self out of Ani's embrace. But as soon as she wrapped her arms around the girl, she pressed her lips to hers and slipped her tongue into her mouth. Lilo's eyes went wide as the kiss was forced upon her. These were her own lips she felt, her own tongue slipping between them. She couldn't believe that she was sharing a deep kiss with herself. After the initial shock, Lilo couldn't let this opportunity go to waste. She tilted her head and mimicked her own kiss. She felt her own long fingers stroking the back of her head, while her own short and stubby ones rested on the cheeks of her older face. Older Lilo gently sat on the ground without breaking the kiss. She pulled her younger self closer, and Lilo pressed her hands against her own fully developed chest. Ani watched from beside them with great interest. She remembered her mother telling her about this while they were younger, but she couldn't believe she was watching the erotic sight of her mother making out with herself. But finally, the kiss was broken. Their lips were pulled apart as their faces drifted away from each other, leaving only a single strand of saliva to connect them.
"Whoa..." the younger Lilo breathed. The older Lilo looked down; her younger hands were still on her chest.
"Oh, sorry," Lilo said as she quickly pulled her arms back.
"Don't be," older Lilo said. "They're yours, after all." She placed her younger hands back onto her chest.
"Maybe I should stay," Lilo grinned. "I could get to know my future self a little bit better." Older Lilo just laughed and placed her younger self back on the board. Kneeling on the ground, she lifted her top and showed her bare chest.
"A quick glimpse into your future," the older Lilo chuckled.
"I have fun with them," Ani grinned.
"Ih," Stitch grinned. "Good for tit-fucking."
"He's not wrong," the older Lilo said. "Next time, we'll spend some time together."
"Then I look forward to it, Lilo," she grinned.
Lilo nodded and smiled as she switched on the time machine. The engine roared to life and lifted into the air. Her older self, Ani, and Stitch all waved her goodbye as the board disappeared into the past.
"You didn't want to tell her we're pregnant?" Ani asked, as she took her mother's hand into her own.
"Tell my younger self that Stitch knocked you up with your own brother or sister?" Lilo chuckled. "Nah. I know me. And I'd want that to stay a surprise."
*****
"Come on, you two," Nani called out. "It's time to go home." She had already packed up their bags and was carrying them, along with Lilo's, in her hand.
"But Mom's not back yet," Ani said.
"I'm sure she's fine," Nani forced a smile. "Maybe we'll meet her on the way." Stitch took his daughter's hand in his paw as they began to follow Nani up the path from the beach. They were almost at the top when they heard Lilo calling from across the street.
"Hey!" she waved at them. "I'm back!" Lilo waited for the lights before she ran across the road and straight into hugging her older sister.
"Whoa, Lilo," Nani chuckled. Lilo held Nani's legs until she knelt down to hug her properly.
"Where'd you go?" Ani asked. Lilo turned to her daughter and wrapped her arms around her. It was almost like she flung herself off her sister and onto Ani.
"I know everything," she smiled between Ani, Stitch, and Nani. "I took Jumba's surfboard to the future and talked with myself. I learned everything."
"You saw my Mom and Aunt?" Ani said. "What'd they say?"
"It's a long story, Ani, But yes, I saw them. I met myself... met my future..."
"And?" Nani asked.
"Let's go home," Lilo smiled. "We've got a lot to talk about."
"Alright. Race you there!" Ani said. She took off before Lilo or Nani could say anything.
"Accata, Ani. Chi meetoh!" Stitch cried as he ran after her. Both Lilo and Nani sighed and shook their heads. They looked at each other, both sisters now in their own unique stages of motherhood, and smiled.
"What about Ani?" Nani asked. "Did you find out how she gets home?"
"Yeah, I did," Lilo smiled. She lifted her arm and took her big sister's hand in her grasp as she watched her daughter running along the path.
"She goes the long way round."
