Disclaimer: I do not own Mr. Peabody and Sherman nor do i make money money off of the characters. This is just to entertain. |
The next morning, Sherman woke up to the sound of the wagon being pulled. He looked to his side to see Adsila sleeping peacefully and quietly. To not disturb her, Sherman sat there motionless for a moment before Mr. Peabody came to pick up a small crate next to them.
"Sleep well, Sherman?" Mr. Peabody asked.
Sherman simply nodded.
"Great; why not wake her up so we can all have breakfast, hmmm?"
As Mr. Peabody carried the crate to Mohe and his family, Sherman gave Adsila a little nudge on the shoulder to wake her. She rubbed her eyes as she got up to stretch.
"Did you have a nice dream, Sherman?" she asked as he stood up.
"I guess," he shrugged, "it was more weird to be honest."
"How so?"
"Well, in my dream, I was in school and we were being talked to by a flying squirrel and a moose."
"...A moose?"
"It's type of deer but with bigger antlers and more fur; they live up North."
"Oh, I see."
They then took their seat next to Mr. Peabody as they were each handed a bowl of corn with a spoon. Sherman began eating, but paused as his eyes widened when he saw Leotie breastfeeding Adahy. She caught him staring and smiled as his face turned bright pink in blush.
"Sherman," Adsila began, looking at his face, "are you okay?"
"I'm find," he said, "I just...she uhh..."
"She's feeding Adahy; there's nothing odd about that."
"Of course not, it's just...well..."
"You'll have to forgive him, Adsila," Mr. Peabody said, "he's never seen a woman breastfeed her child."
"Oh," Adsila replied, "umm, may I asked you a question, Mr....Peabody, is it?"
"It is and you may."
"How can you talk and yet most animals can't?"
"I'm not like most animals, my dear. You see, I have what most animals lack: intellect."
"Intellect?"
"It's what makes me smart enough to talk to you as if I were a person. It's also why I'm able to do things a typical dog could never do; such as, walking up right, cooking fine meals and fist bump."
"Fist bump?"
"It's when you and a friend make a fist and bump them against each other. It's the equivalent to a hi-5 or a hand shake-" *to Sherman* "-why don't you show her, Sherman?"
Sherman place his bowl down and held a fist in front of Adsila; she gawked at it for a moment before pressing her fist against his.
"And that's how it's done," Sherman said as she smiled.
Adsila then turned to Mohe and asked him, "Are you okay?"
"I'm alright," he said.
"Father needs to know what happened."
"I don't think the soldier will let you leave."
"He must, it's urgent."
Adsila then got up to the front of the wagon and asked Randal, "Can you stop, please?"
"No," he retorted.
"But I must speak with my father."
"Isn't that him behind you?"
"No, he's my brother, Mohe."
Randal turned his head to Adsila and asked, "What the hell are you doing here?"
"I came to see my brother," she said, "please, let me tell my father what happened."
"I'm not stopping this wagon until night fall."
"But my father-"
Adsila then saw the back of Dustu's head just up ahead.
"Father!" she called out, "Fath-"
In a split second, Randal slapped Adsila across the face, knocking her back into the wagon as she started balling. Mohe picked her up and let her cry into his soldier, while Leotie and their children sat beside her.
"Never yell in my ear again, bitch!" Randal snapped as he turned forward.
"THAT DOES IT!!" Sherman shouted as he pounced at the soldier before Mr. Peabody caught him.
"Sherman, no!" Mr. Peabody said, struggling to hold him still.
"Let me go! You saw what he did! Let me GO!"
"Violence will only make it worse, stop it!"
Randal chuckled as he said, "The boy reminds me of myself when I was his age. Unlike him, my father didn't hold me back from letting my temper speak for itself. Matter of fact, he encouraged it."
"That's no way to raise your child," Mr. Peabody said, holding Sherman steady, "you should learn to control your anger before you hurt someone or break something valuable."
"WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE??!!!" Sherman shouted, "She was trying to call her Dad!"
"Sherman, enough!"
"What did they do?! What did they do to make you hate them so much that you'd slap a little girl?!"
"Stop me if you heard this before, boy," Randal began, "the Brits made it so that we had to pay THEM for everything WE own. We fought for our freedom and over 50 years later, this land is still our land."
"Everyone knows about the Revolution, stupid."
"Sherman!" Mr. Peabody exclaimed.
"Then you know that this land rightfully belongs to us. So, why do these clay faced bastards think that just because they were here longer than us, that means this is their land? My father told me if you want to own something, you got to put in the work to earn it. They didn't earn the right to say "This is our land." WE fought to the last man, WE lost brothers in battle, WE made this land our own. Remember boy, everything you ever want in life; a farm, a wife, whatever; you have to earn it to own it."
"I'm still going to make you regret everything you've done to this people."
"Boy, I would love to see you try; course, I'd also like to see you just like your girlfriend, now that she knows not to fuck with me."
Sherman screamed as he struggled to get out of Mr. Peabody's grip, but to no avail. By around midday, things were quiet but Sherman's hatred towards Randal still burned. He looked around the wagon and saw Mohe and Adsila sitting quietly, Leotie sing to Adahy, and Mr. Peabody pondering about something. He then looked at Tayanita and Hialeah who were holding their arms up and giggling.
"What are you two doing?" he asked them.
The two girls lowered their arms and sat quietly, trying not to stare at Sherman.
"What?"
"Maybe you should apologize for what happened yesterday," Mr. Peabody suggested.
"But-"
"Ah ah ah, you hurt her feelings, now you've got to make it right."
Sherman sighed as he approached Tayanita and said, "I'm sorry for yelling at you."
"You're mean," Hialeah said, crossed.
"I didn't mean to be, I'm sorry."
"Why were you so angry?"
"Because that guy who shot YOUR Dad makes me angry."
"That doesn't mean you yell at Tayanita."
"She was pulled my hair."
"So, she pulls my hair all the-" *Tayanita tugs Hialeah's hair* "-Ow! Tayanita no!"
"How do you let her get away with that?"
"She was born the summer before Adahy and she doesn't know how to speak in full sentences yet; she's still learning between right and wrong and yelling at her doesn't help."
"How old are you?"
"4 years old as of this spring."
"And yet what you're telling me is something your parents would say."
"They told me the same thing and now I'm telling you. You and Adsila are supposed to be the oldest, but you're just like Tayanita when she's hungry."
"Well I'm sorry, okay? I didn't mean to yell at her."
"Okay, I forgive you."
Sherman then held out his hand and and after a brief pause, Hialeah shook it and Tayanita played with his fingers before he pulled away.
"So," he began, "what we're you two doing?"
"Playing flower stems," Hialeah said.
"Huh?"
"We put our hands together and open them like a flower; then we stretch our arms up to the sky until one of us gets tired."
"What's the point of that?"
"We'll show you."
Hialeah and Tayanita then cupped their hands together and opened them before raising their arms above their heads. Sherman at first seemed unimpressed, but then Hialeah made a funny face; causing Tayanita to start laughing. Tayanita then rubbed her toes against Hialeah's feet, which made her giggle and almost drop her arms.
"Oh, I get it," Sherman said, before turning to Adsila, "Hey Adsila, wanna play?"
Adsila turned to him and said, "Not right now, Sherman."
"Come on, it'll make you feel better."
Adsila was silent for a moment before she got up and sat next to Tayanita and Sherman followed. They all then cupped their hands together, opened them and raised their arms high.
"Want to here a joke?" Sherman asked Adsila.
"I guess," she said.
"What's red and smells pretty?"
"I don't know; your hair?"
"No; flower named Adsila!"
Adsila giggled for a bit then she burst out laughing and Tayanita and Hialeah laughed along.
"You think I smell pretty?" Adsila asked Sherman, once the laughing settled.
"Yeah," he replied with a big smile, "I think you smell very pretty."
"Thank you, Sherman."
"Pretty," Tayanita said before sticking her tongue in Hialeah's ear.
She eeked in laughter as she rubbed her ear lobe on her should. Sherman then honked like a pig, which made the girls laugh hysterically as they struggled to keep their arms up.
Leotie and Mohe smiled at the children as they laughed together, with Mr. Peabody nodding in approval. Suddenly, Mr. Peabody raised an ear as he heard a baby coughing rather harshly from outside the wagon.
"Everyone please be quiet," he said as they began to settle.
"What's wrong, Mr. Peabody?" Sherman asked.
"I hear a baby coughing as if it's choking on something."
Leotie gasped as she held Adahy close.
"Is the baby okay, Mr. Peabody," Sherman asked.
"Shh," he shushed him as the coughing continued.
The wagon was dead silent as they heard a baby cough with little rest. Hialeah held Tayanita while Adsila placed her hand on her beating heart. Sherman then held her hand as they all waited quietly for the excessive coughing to stop. Eventually it did stop and everyone relaxed for a moment.
"What was that a-"
Sherman was cut off by a woman screaming and sobbing from outside the wagon. Adahy then started wailing as Tayanita rushed to her mother's arms in tears as Hialeah followed. Adsila had tears trickle down her face while Sherman sat there confused and worried.
"What happened?" Sherman asked, "What's going on?"
"The baby died, Sherman," Mr. Peabody said, sadly as he sat next to him.
"What? How? Why?"
"It must've been very sick, Sherman."
"But that doesn't make sense; why didn't it get any medicine or go to the doctor?"
"We're in a different time, Sherman; there was nothing anyone could do."
Sherman then had tears trickle down his face as Mr. Peabody hugged him and let him cry over his shoulder. He then brought Adsila close and let her do the same. They all cried and mourned the lost of and innocent child who had barely begun to live.
About an hour passed and the wagon was dead silent. Hialeah and Tayanita all looked down while Leotie breastfed Adahy. Mohe looked outside the wagon to see Cherokee and soldiers passing by. Adsila, Sherman and Mr. Peabody all sat quietly, giving the occasional sigh.
"Are there others like you?" Adsila asked Mr. Peabody, breaking the silence.
"Others?" he replied.
"You said you weren't like most animals; that you had intellect. Are there other animals that can talk like you?"
"Well...not exactly. Their are animals that imitate human speech, but can't actually speak it."
"Then that makes you special."
"Thank you."
"You're also a good father."
"You really think so? I mean, with the way I acted..."
"Sherman told me a lot about you; how you took him in when he was a baby, gave him food, clean clothes and a nice bed."
"Well, thank you; your father is great too."
Just then the wagon stopped and Randal said, "Gotta piss, don't get any ideas."
As Randal got off the horse, Sherman said, "I have to go too."
"Okay then," Mr. Peabody said, holding his hand, "let's go."
Mr. Peabody and Sherman then stepped out and saw that they had stopped in front of a river with a pretty strong current. After they stepped off the wagon, they stood beside Randal as he pissed into the river. Mr. Peabody looked away as Sherman pissed in the river, glaring at the soldier at the same time.
"Boy," Randal smirked, "you know there's nothing you can do for these people. Their fate is already sealed."
"You make me sick," Sherman retorted.
"Sick enough to give you smallpox or measles?"
"What?"
"You know, diseases that can ACTUALLY get you sick as opposed to a guy like me."
"I'd take those over you any day."
"Your funeral."
They then heard a splash in the water as they finished peeing in the river. They turned and saw Adsila standing on the other side of the horse as she froze in fear when she looked at Randal's face. His eyes quickly turned red with rage when he saw she had thrown his gun into the river.
"WHY YOU LITTLE SHIT STAIN!!!" the soldier yelled as he pulled his pants up and charged at her.
"OH NO YOU DON'T!!!" Sherman yelled as he pulled his hand away from Mr. Peabody.
"Sherman, wait!" Mr. Peabody yelled, failing to grab his hand again.
Before Randal could even lay a finger on Adsila, Sherman pounced on him and started pulling his hair, slapping him and poking him in the eye. Randal shouted and yelled as he struggled to get the boy off of him. Randal finally held him by the shirt, but Sherman quickly kicked him in the face; causing him to fall backwards and into the river while Sherman was caught by Adsila and Mr. Peabody before he fell in too.
"And good riddance!" Sherman shouted.
"Sherman!" Mr. Peabody yelled.
Just before he could scold him, a soldier walked up and asked, "What's going on?"
"Randal was going to hurt Adsila," Sherman began, "so I jumped on top of him and beat him up to protect her."
"And who exactly are you, boy?"
"I'm Sherman and if you lay one hand on Adsila, you're next!"
"Sherman!" Mr. Peabody yelled.
"Did that dog just talk?" the soldier asked.
"Naturally."
"...I'm going to have to report this incident to the General-" *turns around* "-Henry!"
Another soldier walked up and asked, "What is it, John?"
"Randal attempted to harm one of the natives," John said, "I'm going to report this to the General-"
"And he shot Mohe in the arm," Sherman added.
"Mohe?"
"He's the guy who was pulling the wagon before Randal shot him for no reason."
"Thanks for that extra detail, Sherman-" *back to Henry* "-you got your medical kit, Henry?"
"I always do, John," he replied, holding it up.
"You tend to Mohe's wound, I'll tell the General about Randal's actions."
"Yes, sir."
As Henry climbed into the wagon and John to find the General, Sherman asked Adsila, "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," she said, wiping away a tear.
"Why are you crying?"
"Because...I caused you more trouble."
"What are you talking about?"
"I think what she means is," Mr. Peabody said, turning Sherman around, "you're now in bigger trouble than before, young man."
"Are you serious?! I saved her life."
"As admirable as your actions were, you still once again dis-"
"IS THAT ALL YOU CARE ABOUT RIGHT NOW!!!!"
After that outburst, there was dead silence before Sherman continued, "Ever since we got here, you've done nothing be criticize me for disobeying you and completely ignore the good things I've done. I found Adsila when she was lost, I stood up for her and her people, I JUST SAVED HER LIFE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!! And instead of you being proud of me and giving me some gratitude, I get grounded and yelled at by someone who only thinks about himself. I WISH YOU HAD NEVER FOUND ME!!!!"
Sherman then ran down the river crying as Mr. Peabody knelt down and took off his glasses. He let his eyes water as he bowed his head in shame. Adsila then ran off to find Sherman as Mr. Peabody remained motionless.
She eventually found him around the bend, crying into the river. She walked up to him and was about to hug him, but he threw some dirt at her.
"Go away!" he said through his sobs, "I want to be alone!"
"Please, Sherman," she said, tears running down her face, "come back."
Sherman shook his head.
"You won't survive one your own."
"How do you know?" Sherman asked, wiping his face.
"Because your father-"
"HE'S NOT MY FATHER!!"
Adsila then gasped as Sherman's face dropped at the realization of what he had just said. He then remembered all the things he has done to make him a smart, healthy child; including taking him in when no one else would. Sherman and Adsila then hugged and cried over each other shoulders for what seemed like forever. They continued to hug and cry until eventually they stopped and wiped their faces.
"Adsila," Sherman began, "I didn't mean that, honest."
"Then you should tell him you love him," she replied.
"I will, because honestly, I do. I do love him."
They were about to head back when they saw Mr. Peabody standing in front of them.
"Mr. Peabody-" Sherman began before Mr. Peabody held his paw up.
"Please, Sherman," he said, "call me Dad."
Sherman then ran up and gave Mr. Peabody a hug as he hugged back. Mr. Peabody then smiled at Adsila and brought her in to for a hug too. They all hugged each other for a moment before releasing and smiled at each other.
"I'm sorry I said those things," Sherman said, "I didn't mean them."
"I know," Mr. Peabody said, "and I'm sorry, too. I was too hard on you and you were right to call me out on it."
"So I'm not grounded anymore?"
"No, you're no longer grounded."
Sherman let out a whoop of excitement as Adsila flashed a big smile.
"Glad you approve," Mr. Peabody said, "now let's head back."
Sherman held Adsila's hand as they all started to walk back to the wagon.
"Hey, Dad," Sherman said.
"Yes, Sherman?" Mr. Peabody replied.
"Quick question: did you see Adsila and I having sex last night?"
"...Yes."
"Well, that's embarrassing."
"It's not like I haven't seen your penis before, Sherman."
"I not embarrassed," Adsila said, "father said sex is natural."
"It is indeed; changing the subject for a moment, Adsila, why did you through Randal's gun in the river?"
"I thought without his weapon, he wouldn't have been as threatening."
"That was a very bold move you made."
"Yeah," Sherman concurred, "you had to be really brave to even touch that thing."
"I was inspired by your bravery, Sherman," Adsila said, innocently.
"Really?"
"Yes."
"Cool."
When they got back to the wagon, they saw what appeared to be the General talking to John about what happened. He noticed them as they walked up and knelt down to their level to talk to them.
"Are you Sherman?" he asked.
"Yes sir," he replied.
"General Winfield Scott-" *shakes Sherman's hand, then Mr. Peabody's* "-and you must be the talking dog I've been hearing about."
"Naturally," Mr. Peabody replied.
"I'd question it, but we have more important things to discuss right now-" *to Sherman* "-I was told you prevented Private Randal Merlin, Jr. from harming this young native. Is that correct."
"Yes sir," Sherman answered.
"Son, you should be proud of yourself for your act of heroism. I had my orders to move the natives West of the Mississippi, however I do not tolerate of my soldiers to do harm to these people. They're already heartbroken that they're being forced out of their homes, they don't need to be discouraged any further. Was there anything else Private Randal did or said, son."
"He said the Cherokee were being selfish by claiming this land was theirs, sir."
"Son, that hypothetical mentality is all I need to discharge Private Randal. This land is all it is: land. It's how you use it that makes it your own. Where are you from, son?"
"New York, sir."
"You're a long way from home; what brings you to Georgia?"
Sherman took a quick glance at Adsila before saying, "The peaches were in season, sir."
"That they are son," the General concurred, "welp, I have men searching for Private Randal as we speak. Why don't you two head back to town? We'll take care of the natives, I promise."
As the General stood up straight, Sherman quickly said, "Sir?"
"Son?" the General replied.
"I'd like to say goodbye to Adsila before I go, sir."
"Take all the time you need, son. I'm going to get her father, the Chief, to pick her up-" *to Adsila* "-Dustu, is it miss?"
Adsila nodded as the General got on his horse to find Dustu.
"Are you really going to go?" Adsila asked Mr. Peabody.
"I'm afraid so," Mr. Peabody said, "Randal is no longer a problem, Mohe is taken care of, and we've been here long enough to know you and what you're journey is like."
Sherman then took off his shoes and socks before handing Adsila his socks.
"In case your feet get cold," Sherman said as she took them and put them on.
"Thank you, Sherman," she said with a smile.
They smiled at each other for a moment before Sherman leaned in and kissed her as she kissed back. They both released just as the General came back with Dustu. After one last hug, Dustu helped Adsila climb upon his horse as Sherman wiped away a tear from his eye.
"I love you," he said to Adsila.
"I love you, too," she replied, "I'll never forget you."
"Neither will I."
"Farewell, Mr. Peabody," Dustu said to Mr. Peabody, "Take good care of your son."
"I will Dustu," he replied.
As they rode across the river, they all waved goodbye until they disappeared from sight. Mr. Peabody then took out the remote to the WABAC and turned the cloaking off as they stepped inside. They set the coordinates to the present and blasted off into a wormhole as Sherman picked up his homework sheet. When they got back to the present, Mr. Peabody and Sherman entered the elevator and pressed the top button to head upstairs.
"Do you think she made it?" Sherman asked Mr. Peabody.
"It's hard to say," Mr. Peabody replied, "I could check the records but I don't think I'll get a clear answer."
"Can't we just go to the place she ended up?"
"We could, if I knew exactly where that was."
"You don't know?"
"I'm sorry, Sherman; our coordinates were set for a village close to the Chattahoochee River in Georgia; all I know is that that's the spot where a village once stood."
Once they got to the top, Sherman said, "There's gotta be something that says where Adsila ended up."
"I'll see what I can find," Mr. Peabody said, "you go finish your homework-" *sniffs Sherman* "-and take a shower when you're done, please.
Sherman nodded as he went upstairs to finish his homework. After answering all of the questions, he gathered a his pajamas and a new pair of underwear as he stepped into the bathroom. After turning on the shower and taking his clothes off, Sherman stepped in and read the label on the body wash: peach blossom. He sighed as he lathered his wash cloth with it and cleaned himself.
After lathering his hair and rinsing it with shampoo, Sherman stepped out of the shower, dried himself and put on a new pair of underwear and his pajamas. He then went to the living room to watch some tv. He turned on the tv and flipped through some channels before settling on a channel playing a kids movie he was familiar with.
"Huh," he smirked as the movie played, "just got started."
Sherman laid back as the movie played out; occasionally, he'd sit up straight for the best parts, but overall he was at ease during the picture. As the movie was more than 2/3's in, Mr. Peabody came into the kitchen and started making dinner.
"Didn't you find anything?" Sherman asked, not taking his eyes off the screen.
"Not much, I'm afraid," Mr. Peabody replied as he poured water into the pot, "just an excerpt from a soldier's diary about a Cherokee woman who got pneumonia while on the trail."
"Did it say who?"
"No."
Sherman sighed.
"Cheer up, Sherman; I believe she did make it. You gave her your socks, after all."
"Yeah, but how do we know she made it?"
"I honestly don't know Sherman; but for now let's just assume she did."
"Then wouldn't her great great grandchildren be around."
"Most likely Sherman, but we won't know for sure until we meet them."
Sherman smiled with confidence as she continued watching the movie. Once the movie finished, Sherman got up and sat at the table for dinner. He was handed a bowl of macaroni pasta and they took their time eating as they talked about plans for the weekend. After dinner, they put on a movie Sherman hadn't seen in a year. After the movie was done, Sherman and Mr. Peabody went off too bed where they both dreamt pleasant dreams.
