Eleven ‘o’ clock came, and Dot Warner went.
The doctor sighed. Looking out the window the sky was still blue, the birds were still chirping. It was a good day. He came face to face with his demons,inner and outer, and survived—intact. Thursday would come again, as it always did, but for the first time in years, he was looking forward to it, forward to the start of something new.
Looking down, he saw the Warners scampering off. Dot as usual, making her way at a merry skip. Then she paused and turned to look directly up at his window. A smug, placid smile crossed her face.
For a moment, panic set in. But, to his relief she curtsied deeply towards his window. He smiled and waved back. Yes, next week would be different.
“I think maybe I will be—” The doctor felt the blood drain from his face when he noticed what Dot then held up. How had she? When did she do it? Why didn’t he notice?
At first he thought it was a trick, but a glance down confirmed the truth. The striped boxers, and blue slacks she held up so triumphantly, were indeed his.
Then she was gone, scampering off to catch her brothers.
“At least. Zhat’s all she took off.”
