Dangerous Game
The four girls were silent as they moved deep within the heavy brush and thick trees of the Emerald Forest. At last they had reached their destination for their next combat evaluation: a ruined shed of a building on top of a hill. Tied around the thin trunk of the tree next to the opening for the door was a large crimson flag. It bore the letters RWBY in glittering golden thread, and Weiss was the first to approach.
She reached out and ran her fingers against the fabric as she scoffed, “I can't believe we're protecting something as basic as a flag.”
Yang walked up alongside her and said, “Yeah, but it's just a representation for us securing and defending an area. It doesn't matter what form it takes in training.”
“Besides, we're not just dealing with the creatures of Emerald Forest. We have to contend with the teams of our class,” Blake put in.
Weiss mumbled that she already knew all of that, and Ruby briefly touched her shoulder. It was the only contact that the heiress needed to recenter her focus, and Ruby walked to the top of the hill to scan the nearby treeline. “This is a very exposed spot, with only a slight height advantage. Still, it shouldn't be hard for two of us to stay here while the other two go out to hunt for another team's flag,” the redhead said, her hand resting against the bark of the tree. She looked everyone over for a moment while she mused on how to divide the team.
Pointing at Weiss and Blake, Ruby added, “Okay, you two guard. Blake can stay hidden in the trees at the base of the hill while Weiss uses her glyphs to defend the flag. When the chime sounds for us to start, Yang and I will head out to search. It shouldn't take us long, and with the one-hit rule, my speed will prove pretty effective today.”
“Just be careful with the creatures. They always play for keeps,” Yang said to her little sister as much as to the entire group.
Ruby grinned with a nod. “Always!”

She was on full alert as she made her way through the lush trees. Her steps were completely silent among the green leaves that littered the ground, and her silver eyes were ever watchful for any signs of dangerous movement around her.
The only warning Ruby had was the familiar sound of a weapon shifting forms, and she threw herself forward with a quick dash to avoid a red and bronze spear. It stuck a tree right behind her and she drew her weapon. Ruby fired a shot at the ground to launch herself high up into the branches of the trees just as Pyrrha's shield came spinning for her.
The taller girl was left to look up at the branches while she flexed her Semblance and called her weapon and shield back to her hands. She's very fast, alright... Pyrrha thought. She couldn't see beyond the branches of the trees, but she could hear a whirlwind stirring up above the canopy accompanied by rhythmic gunshots. The only thing she could do was run and hope that the canopy would also help to camouflage her position from Ruby.
Ruby continued to hop from tree to tree while gathering speed until she appeared to be a flash of red on the wind. She headed towards the ground and easily spotted Pyrrha's crimson hair, which helped to guide her single blow. Pyrrha turned while raising a hand towards Ruby, but the younger girl simply released her scythe as soon as she felt it pull in her hands in the wrong direction. Her body carried the momentum to let her barrel right into Pyrrha with a vicious gut-punch, sending the older girl flying into a rather foul-smelling stagnate pond.
Skidding her feet against the ground to stop herself, Ruby covered her mouth with a hand in shock at the distance she had knocked Pyrrha. “Oh, my God, I'm sooooo sorry, Pyrrha!” Ruby called.
“It's okay, Ruby! You caught me by surprise when you let go of your weapon and punched me, I never would have thought you would do that,” Pyrrha replied as she climbed out of the filthy waters. “Guess I'm out though... so I'm going to find a place to get cleaned up. I wish you good luck, although I know you don't need it.”
Ruby waved at Pyrrha while pulling Crescent Rose free from the tree that its blade had embedded into. She was instantly running again as she closed her scythe up and slid it into place on the back of her belt. She felt like she must be close to team JNPR's flag and she had a small idea who they would leave the defense to.
She slowed and came to a stop within the cover of the trees just before reaching a sheer rock wall. Gazing upwards, she could see a ledge jutting from the wall high up and the mouth of a cave with a rather old statue sitting beside it. Tied around the statue was the royal blue flag bearing the JNPR letters, and right beside that stood Nora. Ruby's hunch had been right on the money for their choice of defense. Her hand moved for her weapon, but she didn't get the chance to draw it.
Nora hollered while launching herself higher up the cliff face with a powerful boom from her hammer, and Ruby shifted forward so she could look up more. Free-falling straight at Nora was a laughing Yang. Perfect timing, sis! Ruby thought as she quietly slipped from her cover to steal the flag.
Swinging her hammer, Nora fired at the peak of her swing to add speed and aimed to finish this encounter mid-air. Yang timed two shots downwards to briefly slow her fall, allowing her to use the top of Nora's hammer to kick herself into a rapid spin. While spinning, she easily landed a blow against Nora's head and sent her face-first into the cliff wall. Yang landed beside the statue, where Ruby was already clutching the flag in her hand.
“Overdid it a bit, didn't you?” Ruby pointed out.
Yang looked up and reached out to catch Nora as the girl finally came falling down after pulling herself from the small crater she had left in the cliff. Nora was laughing as she bounced out of Yang's hold, and the blonde said, “Nah, I'm pretty sure she's fine.”
Nora clapped Yang on the shoulder and cheerfully said, “Brilliant! You shall forevermore be the champion for your team's snacks!” She picked up her hammer and brushed off her clothes before abruptly leaping away to disappear among the trees below.
“Champion of our snacks? What does that mean?” Ruby asked with a small grin.
“Just something from a few nights ago, nothing really big... I'll tell you about it later,” Yang said with a wink and she held her hand out. When Ruby moved to press the flag into her palm, Yang grabbed her wrist instead and pulled her into the cave.
“Yang?” Ruby nervously whispered.
Her older sister didn't say a word as she drew Ruby deeper into the crevice, to the point that they were out of sight. The light of the day outside could still easily pierce the cave around them, so visibility wasn't a problem at all. The blonde pinned her against a smooth part of the wall and kissed her when Ruby opened her mouth to protest. When Yang finally pulled away, Ruby caught her breath and sputtered, “Are you crazy?! We're in the middle of an evaluation right now! An evaluation! Where they evaluate us? That means cameras! Everywhere!”
A devious grin spread across Yang's lips. “Let's just say that the cameras nearby had an accident during my little fight with Nora, and if you don't want someone to find us... stop yelling so loudly.”
“This is not a good idea, Yang,” Ruby said, her cheeks flushed and her body feeling hot despite what she was saying. “You know it's stupid... Ruby let out a heavy breath and leaned her back against the wall. She couldn't believe the audacity of Yang! That girl could always find a way to surprise Ruby no matter how long the two were together, and at this thought Ruby smiled to herself.
Lost in her own world for a moment or two, it took Ruby that much longer to realize that she was hearing the scurrying of something rather large coming from deeper within the cave. By the time she registered the noises, it was too late for her to react. A lightning blow lashed out and knocked her violently onto the ground, leaving her too winded to move and filling her vision with black spots.
She heard the large monster creep closer, but the sharp pain in the back of her head overwhelmed her into unconsciousness.
