Chapter Tag: There is discussion of male pregnancy in this chapter and a reference to it. (----) The following morning found Dread Wing in Gangryn's lab. As usual, the area was littered with half-finished projects, the remnants of past failures and some random items that had caught the scientist's interest. A new tank caught Dread's eye, prompting the mutant to walk over to it and peer in. It was set up to mimic a section of swamp, with an unhappy looking toad-like creature sitting on a bit of driftwood. It was fat enough that Dread caught himself silently counting the seconds until the wood snapped under it. Gangryn looked up from his current project and saw what his Lord was looking at, “Ah, a very interesting specimen.” He put aside his tools and walked over to stand next to Dread, “See, these creatures have an unusual manner of breeding. The female lays a clutch of eggs directly into the male's stomach, where he fertilizes them and keeps them inside until the resulting young are big enough to be let out.” Dread Wing nodded slowly, half-tempted to poke the fat creature, “Interesting...” A thought came to him and he spoke it aloud, “So it's a type of male pregnancy, yes?” Gangryn nodded, “That is correct my Lord.” “Are other species capable of this?” The scrawny scientist considered that, “A few. For one, there's the mutated sea horse, which does basically the same as this toad here. I believe there's also some species of mountain lizard that can carry eggs as well, but they're supposed to be hermaphrodites, so I'm not certain if that counts.” Dread nodded again, asking, “Is there a way it could be induced?” Gangryn gave his master a curious look, “Induced?” The red mutant made a distracted motion with one hand, “Is there a way to cause pregnancy in a male? Rather, one not of those specific species?” The scientist grinned, “Oh, there are a few, but unfortunately none of them are particularly safe. If it doesn't kill the host parent, then it's very rare that the resulting infant is brought to full term. The only really safe way is to alter the host parent into something closer to a hermaphrodite, but then there are the issues of infertility that typically result. May I ask why you're so curious, my Lord?” Dread Wing shook his head, “A passing fancy, nothing more.” Though he couldn't quite get the image of his human with a rounded stomach, heavy with their child, out of his head, Dread felt it might be best to shelve that until a safe method came about. If worst came to worst, Dread could always do what previous Kings had done, which was to have a child by a concubine and raise that one as his and Peak's own. Shaking his head of ideas that weren't even feasible yet, Dread turned away from the container and focused on Gangryn, “I need something to treat bruises and sore muscles.” The scrawny mutant nodded and left to dig through some of his shelves. He eventually returned to Dread and offered him a small container, “Rub this cream into the afflicted areas and it should provide relief in just a few minutes. It works best after a bath.” Dread Wing nodded his acceptance and took the small container. As he left the lab, he couldn't help one last glance at the overly fat toad. The mutant almost thought he could see movement under its skin and hurried himself off, before temptation overtook him and he gave Gangryn the go ahead for the task that Dread was thinking of. It wouldn't do to force something that risky onto Peak, especially not while the boy still didn't trust him so well.
