Chapter 4: Training Day
After I dropped off my stuff in my dorm under my bed, I turned around and saw Yumi standing in my doorway. “Hey. I thought you were going straight to the factory with the others.” I said. “I thought maybe you and I could talk alone without Odd around to interrupt us.” Yumi replied. “Yeah, sure.” I said back. I had never actually gotten the chance to talk to Yumi alone. I’ve had a bit of a crush on her ever since I met her on my first day in History class last year in September. How was I supposed to handle this without sounding like an idiot and not saying something I don’t mean to? We left my room, and after I closed the door, we walked down the hall, got outside, and walked toward the sewer. The walk through most of the sewer was pretty quiet. I don’t think either of us had anything major to talk about. I finally broke the awkward silence by asking, “Soooo… how long have you and the others been fighting X.A.N.A?” “I’d say it’s been about a year and a half already.” Yumi replied. “Wow. And how long has William been one of X.A.N.A.’s pawns?” “A few weeks. But Jeremy created a copy of William by using one of the towers in the Desert sector.” “Huh. No wonder he’s been acting so weird lately. That explains a lot.” I said as I started climbing up the ladder behind Yumi up to the bridge. I thought to myself ‘I have to tell her that I’m in love with her.’ The thing is, that I don’t know when to tell her. “Um, Yumi.” I said nervously. “Yeah?” “There’s something I need to tell you. I, um, I’m…” I was cut off by my phone ringing. I took it out of my pocket and answered it. “Hello? What’s up Jeremy?” “Where are you two? X.A.N.A.’s activated a tower in the Desert sector!”(I thought of this as I was about to write the confession) “We’re outside the factory. We’ll be there in a minute.” “Hurry! Odd, Ulrich, and Aelita are waiting for you two on Lyoko.” “Okay Jeremy.” I said as I hung up my phone and put it back in my pocket. “X.A.N.A.’s activated a tower in the Desert. The others are already on Lyoko waiting for us.” “Okay. What was it you were going to say?” Yumi asked. “I’ll tell you later. Right now, we gotta hurry.” I replied. We took off for the elevator, jumping off the stairs and grabbing one of the ropes and swinging down, landing in front of the elevator. “We’re here Jeremy. How are the others doing?” I asked as we got on the elevator, and I pressed the button to send us down. “Head for the Scanner Room. Odd, Ulrich, and Aelita are about halfway to the tower. I’ll bring up the Overwing once you guys get to Lyoko so you two can try and catch up to them.” Jeremy replied. “Got it.” Yumi and I said at the same time. “Looks like I’ll get some training in today regardless of an attack or not.” I said to Yumi. “Yeah well, it’ll take some time before you’re ready to handle the big stuff on Lyoko.” She said back. “We’ll see.” I replied. We got off the elevator at the scanner room and walked over to the scanners. “We’re ready Jeremy.” Yumi said. “Okay, I’ll start up the procedure.” Jeremy said as Yumi and I walked into separate scanners. I then heard Jeremy over the speakers say “Transfer Yumi. Transfer Ryan. Scanner Yumi. Scanner Ryan. Virtualization.” I then felt the rush of wind hit my face and the next thing I knew, I was on Lyoko, falling to the ground, landing on my feet and planted my hands on the ground to keep from falling on my face. I stood up and looked around, noticing Yumi to my right and desert everywhere else. “I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. When you said Desert Sector Jeremy, I guess you weren’t kidding.” I said, somewhat surprised, but not entirely. “Well, what did you expect, it is a desert. Here comes the Overwing.” Jeremy said back as the Overwing virtualized in front of us. Yumi got on first, then I hopped on, turned my back to her, and readied my flaming arrow launcher, and we were off. After only a few minutes, I heard a buzzing noise, but ignored it. Yumi then said, “Hey Ryan. “Yeah?” “What was it you wanted to tell me on the bridge?” I looked down at the ground after hearing that question, looking to my left out to the Digital Sea. “Well, I was going to say…” Before I could finish my sentence, something hit the Overwing, knocking both Yumi and I off of it. I saw a Hornet coming from the right, which I assumed was the source of the buzzing I heard earlier. I took aim as the Hornet fired another shot, which barely missed me. “FIRE ARROW!” I yelled, hitting the Hornet dead on, and not realizing that I hit the ground and was sliding to the edge of the ground, about to slide over the edge and into the Digital Sea. I tried to adjust myself to stop sliding, but with no success. I slid over the edge, but grabbed the ledge quick enough to keep from falling. I then heard Yumi say, “Ryan, where are you!?” “YUMI! HELP!” I yelled as I dangled from the ledge, slowly losing my grip. I then saw Yumi’s head look over the edge down at me. “I can’t reach the ledge with my left hand. Help me up.” I said. “Give me your hand, quick!” She said. I tried to lift a few fingers so that Yumi could grab my hand, but I lost my grip entirely. Before I fell too far, Yumi grabbed my hand and was half way over the ledge herself. “Jeremy, you have to devirtualize Ryan now!” Yumi demanded. Then we heard Jeremy say, “I’m trying, but X.A.N.A.’s messed with parts of the code used for devirtualization.” “Meaning?” I asked, dangling over the Digital Sea, with only Yumi to keep me from falling. “Meaning that it’s going to take time to repair all of the damaged code. Time you don’t have!” Jeremy replied. “Which means you’ll be lost in the Digital Sea if either of us loses our grip.” Yumi said. I could hear the sadness and, I think, fear in her voice. I then said, “Jeremy, I have an idea. Send Odd to our position and have him shoot me with one of his Laser Arrows.” Which will send you back here and we won’t lose you. Ok, can you hold on for another 3 or 4 minutes?” Jeremy asked. “I don’t know, but I’ll try.” I said back. If there was the slightest chance that Odd wouldn’t make it in time, now would be the best time to tell Yumi the truth. “Yumi, if I don’t make it…” “Stop Ryan, don’t talk like that!” “Yumi, please.” I pleaded. “If I don’t make it out of this, I want you to know that I, I… I’m in love with you.” At that moment, my hand gave out. I lost my hold of Yumi’s hand, and started falling toward the Digital Sea. I then heard someone yell “LASER ARROW!” and saw Yumi devirtualize, and then felt one of Odd’s arrows hit me and I was devirtualized. ‘Thanks Odd.’ I thought to myself. Soon after, I found myself back in the Scanner Room, as I fell out of the scanner, but caught myself, putting my hands in front of me. I stood up and noticed that Yumi wasn’t around. I climbed up the ladder to the Computer Room and said, “Hey Jeremy, have you seen Yumi?” “She wasn’t in the Scanner Room?” “No, she wasn’t. The only place she could have gone is… oh no. I gotta go.” I said as I turned around, called the elevator, got on and went up to the main entrance of the factory. I ran out of the elevator, grabbed one of the ropes and started climbing up. I got onto the little bit of stairs left, and saw Yumi walking across the bridge. I then called out, “Yumi, wait!” She turned around and looked me, but she just kept walking. I started running to try to catch up to her, but then she started running when she heard me running. “Yumi! Please, I just need to talk to you!” But she just kept running. I lost track of her somewhere in the middle of the woods. I stopped to catch my breath, sat down, leaning against a tree and put my head in my hands. “What have I done?” I said aloud, starting to get upset with myself over the mistake I just made. I took out my phone and dialed Yumi’s number. I put my phone to my ear, hoping that Yumi would answer. It went to Yumi’s voicemail, so I left her a message saying, “Yumi, please call me. I really need to talk to you about what just happened on Lyoko.” I tried to keep myself calm, but with no luck. “I don’t want this to get in the way of our friendship.” I continued, as tears ran down my cheeks. “I’m sorry.” I finished, hung up my phone and put it back in my pants pocket. I continued to sit, leaning against the tree. When I heard my name being called, I looked around the tree to see Odd, Ulrich, Jeremy and Aelita looking around for me. I stood up, and walked toward them, with my head down and my hands in my hoodie pockets. Aelita then asked, “Ryan, what’s wrong? Where’s Yumi?” “And more importantly, what happened between you two?” Jeremy added. “I think I screwed up, guys. I told Yumi that I’m in love with her.” I’m My Own OC 12/17/11 ImMyOwnOC 1/30/13While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
