The clock chimed eight bells and Digger locked the door and went to the back of the shop. Business had been slow, like usual. He lit a rollup cigarette and sat at his workbench over some clocks that he had recently acquired. Fine ornate gilded clocks, high quality construction…..they just didn’t work. There was a knock at the door. Digger looked up and then back to his work.
“Can’t they read?” he muttered as he took he clock apart. Again the knock…this time louder. “We’re….shut!” he called out. Even louder knocking…..this time the door shook in it’s frame. “Oh for the love of……” he out the clock down and walked to the shop door. He unbolted it and opened it a crack. “We’re……” In an instant Digger was being forced back into his shop by the huge figure. Carefully the silhouette bolted the door. He then grabbed Digger by the scruff of his neck and led him through to the workshop. He then saw the lion that had entered his shop. “Is this a robbery?” he asked nervously. “That depends on what you now tell me….” Aurelio perched on the rather small stool. He removed his leather gloves and lay them on the worktop. “What do you want to know?” he offered. “Schwenk….what did he bring you?” he asked, examining his claws. “Him…..erm…..nothing……we’re friends, he came in to have a chat….catch up….” “Mr Digger….I’m an impatient man at the best of times….but when you lie to me…..I do get rather upset….and when a lion like myself gets upset……you tend to know about it….” he huffed. “Well OK…OK….now come to think of it…..he did bring in a box….nothing more than that really….” “A box? What was in it?” he stood and leaned towards Digger. “I don’t know…..I had to promise not to look inside……” he replied. Aurelio grabbed Digger by the throat and squeezed very slightly and lifted Digger off his feet. His eyes narrowed and he moved his face closer. “I swear it…I never looked once…..” he croaked. Aurelio waited a few seconds then dropped Digger on the floor. “Very well…..give me the box!” “Right away…right away…….” Digger was nothing if not a survivor. He rummaged on his shelf and presented the box to Aurelio. The lion’s eyes lit up. He scrutinized the box, then, slowly he opened it. After a few seconds he closed the lid. “So…human….you think me a fool….” He said levelly. “Wha….no…no…that was the box he gave me…I promise you…..” he started to sweat. Aurelio dropped the box on the floor. He bounced and a small pebble rolled out on the floor. Aurelio crushed the ornate box underfoot. “It seems like my business is done here……” he spoke, his deep voice rumbling. “I’m…..I’m sorry I couldn’t help m-more….” Digger replied. “Oh? Maybe you can….” Aurelio turned back to the human. “R-really???” “Indeed……I’m a bit peckish….skipped lunch and dinner you see…..” “You want me to get you something to eat?” “Sort of……” Aurelio reached out and grabbed the human by his throat again. “You see…the real art is in keeping your meal living as long as you can!” Digger struggled violently, but to no avail, Aurelio was a full-time hard case. The lion leaned over and bit deeply into the top of Diggers left arm, his razor sharp teeth severing flesh and sinew with ease. Digger shrieked loudly. Aurelio chewed and swallowed. “Not exactly fresh are you….” He sounded disappointed. Aurelio then adjusted his grip and used his other hand to grab Digger’s ankle, he then held the human between both hands, like a kebab. He then plunged his teeth into Diggers side, just above his hip. He worked his way up, ribs crunched as Aurelio savoured the hot, fresh blood. Digger shrieked and shuddered as the lion went to work. He finally died five minutes later, through massive blood loss, the lion ate for a further twenty minutes, leaving little flesh. After his meal he picked up the carcass and snapped the neck, removing his head. He stuffed it in a bag and left, putting his gloves back on. Moments later the lion disappeared into a steady snowfall. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
