Chapter 4
Kim pulled her car into a gas station and put the vehicle into park. She ran her fingers through her hair as she sat there thinking; trying hard to comprehend what her parents had done. Ron was alive, sort of. How could they have done this? It was truly beyond bizarre.
She sighed, all the times she had cried herself to sleep, were they justified. Was Ron truly gone like they said? She had to see this new Ron...no…Ronette. A cook to say the least, well that was one thing that carried over, Ron could cook. She remembered the pastries he made in high school that had the whole school talking. It was a good memory. Still all the madness...she needed some answers and she knew who had them...Wade!
She rolled down the window and put the car into drive, it was time to relax. Forget about things for the moment and enjoy the road. There was too much on her mind right now, she needed just to put things aside if only for a few moments. The ride took her miles out of town and to drive back would take her just as long. As it turned out she found a motel and took refuge there for the night. She called home just to let them know, not saying too much else. Sleep over took her almost immediately as her head hit the pillow.
The next few days were a bit tense around the house, between chores and work Kim really didn’t have too much of a chance to talk to anyone. She really wanted to talk with Wade but work had her busy as her co-workers had come down with flu and she was the only one left to handle the classes.
The class had gone well and the young children were learning fast, all the parents were happy with Kim’s teaching methods. As she dried off she heard her name being yelled across the pool, “Kimberly I’d like to see you in my office please.”
Mr. Feeler sat behind his desk looking impatient as Kim sat. “Hello Mr.Feeler.” Kim knew he wasn’t that old but he was still her boss, at least for the moment; she was a bit worried about what he was going to say to her.
“Thanks for seeing me Kimberly.” He smiled, she was pretty but not his type, “It seems I have a proposition for you.”
“Oh.” Kim said with some question in her voice.
“I just got off the phone with Susan Platt she was the one you replaced due to her pregnancy. Well it seems that she has decided that she isn’t going to return to work. So her position here needs to be filled.”
Kim sat up a bit in the chair, it looks like she might get a full time job out of this. “I’m sorry to hear she isn’t coming back.” She secretly hoped he would at least offer her a position.
“Well it is unfortunate, she was well liked here but now it doesn’t seem to matter .” He turned and did something with his computer then turned back to Kim. “I’ve talked with the other ladies about the vacancy and all of them recommended you. It seems they are not interested in the position. So I’m offering it to you. Now before you say yes I have to explain some things to you.” He handed her some papers, “Those are the qualifications, you don’t have them all but all of the courses are being run soon at the college. If you want the job you’ll have to have those, now you will have to pay for them to begin with but if you pass we’ll reimburse you the cost; just keep the receipts. He smiled again, noting that she didn’t look too perturbed.
“Now there are other things, I’ve been doing all the paper work while Susan has been gone; you’ll have to take that over. It not hard but there are a lot of things to keep straight; I will of course train you, so there is no worry there. Any questions so far?”
Kim took a breath and thought, “Is this a part time position?” She was working almost every day right now but that was because everyone was sick.
“I can see where you might think that, but no it’s a full time position. You will have many responsibilities but it is a rewarding job. Susan found it so.” The phone rang and he motioned that he was going to take the call.
She saw that he quickly ended it on purpose, it seems he didn’t want to keep her waiting too long.
“You don’t have to give me an answer today Kimberly but I’d like your decision by the end of the week if possible.”
She didn’t have to wait that long, as a person with a criminal record and work opportunities almost nil in the area she didn’t really have too much of a choice. He was right though the job was fulfilling, to be able help get people in shape and teach them to swim was rewarding. “I don’t have to wait Mr. Feeler I’ll take the position. So can you help me get signed up for those courses?”
He smiled, he was happy she took the position, he knew if she didn’t he was going to have a hard time finding someone to take it. “That’s great news Kimberly, thanks that helps me out a lot. I will get you signed up for those courses. We’ll start training next week sometime, if that’s ok with you.”
“That’s fine Mr. Feeler. Thank you.”
“Just call me John.” He put out his hand and they shook.
It was a good day Kim thought.
She finally got around to using her Kimunicator, she turned it on hoping that Wade was free to talk. She waited for a few moments but nothing happened; so she put it down. She took out her note book and started reading up on her new responsibilities for her job. There were a lot of them. A lot had to do with the building and the safety equipment in the facility. About an hour later the Kimunicator buzzed it seemed Wade had heard her call. She picked it up and activated it, then the small screen flickered to life.
Wade looked a bit tired but she needed some answers. “Hi Kim.” Wade said cheerfully.
“I’m guessing you know why I’m calling.” Kim said with a bit of angst in her voice, her emotions again were rising to the situation. She took a deep breath and tried to calm herself.
“Wade what the hell happened?” She sat on her bed.
“First Kim, turn on your computer, it seems that the Kimunicator is in need of some repair; the picture I’m getting from it is distorted. I can use your computer to speak to you instead.”
Kim got up walked over to her chair and sat down. She turned on her laptop, in a few moments it was up and running. Then a window opened and Wade stared back at her. She scratched her head not knowing how he managed to do it. “Wade can you hear me?”
“Yup.” Wades voice came from the computer’s speakers.
“Ok spill.”
“First, Kim do you really want to know? It was a long time ago; it might be best if...” He didn’t get to finish his sentence.
“Wade if you don’t start talking I will find out where your office is and I will be there first thing tomorrow morning when you get there and then we can have this conversation!” She glared at him with almost evil eyes.
He sighed, she wasn’t going to like this, “Kim you have to understand the times were different back then.”
“Tell me about it I was there!”
“Well... you were and you weren’t”
“What does that mean?” Kim said with great question, she was there she knew.
“It means this,” He took a deep breath then began his tale. “When the verdict was brought in you went nuts, you should remember that. The whole court room exploded in anger and you...you flipped out on the judge.” He paused there for a moment shaking his head, remembering the fiasco.
Kim put her hand over her face, she remembered that well...a very bad day in the life of Kim Possible. “Yeah that’s a memory I’ll never forget.”
“Your parents were beside themselves, the days that followed were not any better. As they settled into the realization of the whole situation that Sensei guy appeared to me, saying I knew a solution. He left not explained anything to me.”
“He said nothing?” Kim said with surprise.
“Nothing, only that I had the solution. A solution to what I didn’t know.”
“All right lets get to the part where you take Ron’s body and why?”
“Well that’s the part you might not understand. You went off the board for awhile, you sorta lost your way and I’m not sure if you remember that part. You were institutionalized for almost a year right after the trial.”
“What...I...?” Kim thought about things for a moment. The time after that monkey trial in her head was a bit wonky, she really didn’t really remember a lot of it. She did remember being put into the prison...perhaps. “I went to an institution before going to prison?” She said aloud.
“Yeah.” Wade said with some sadness creeping into his voice. “You went totally off the deep end and we lost hope each time we went to see you. You didn’t remember us and you stared out the window mostly. It wasn’t only you that suffered, your parents got worse as time went on; they stopped going to work. They both had hit a rock bottom depression and then they came to me. They asked ...no more like pleaded if there was anything I could do...scientifically to...to.” He had a hard time bringing himself to say it. “To see if I could bring back Ron.”
Kim was horrified. “Bring back Ron from the dead.” She just stared at him, “Wade what were you thinking?”
There was a long pause before Wade spoke again. “You weren’t there Kim your parents begged me to try, just to save your soul.”
“My soul! Wade...I was the one who was still alive. ”
“No not really Kim, you weren’t even there. I looked deep into your eyes one afternoon and they were vacant. For over a year that’s the way you stayed. It wasn’t until they began shock therapy that you started to respond. I think it brought you back to a time when you were fighting Shego. She had hit you so many a time with her blasts; I think your body did a natural response to the stimulus.”
“I don’t remember that.” Kim said in puzzlement.
“I’m surprised.” He was sure she would remember herself being strapped down and shocked. “It worked and you were released and sent to prison to spend out your remainder of your time. Although during your stay in the institution we did what your parents told you.”
“Yeah you took Ron’s body...about that; how did you get it?” She was intrigued.
“Well...since Dr. Drakken put it in a suspension chamber they couldn’t bury it. Mr. and Mrs. Stopable said they couldn’t afford to put it in a mausoleum so they left it to the state to do what ever they wanted. They had made their own arrangements. ”
“Arrangements?”
“They put up a tombstone in Grassland Cemetery in his memory.”
“Oh... I didn’t know.”
“Most don’t it was done very quietly and soon after that the Stopable’s moved away.”
“So I’ve heard.” She rubbed her chin, what Wade had been telling her was something she couldn’t believe. Where had the time gone, a whole year of not remembering anything! Not even one visit came to mind, she was drawing a blank. “So you thought D N Amy might be able to bring him back?” The idea was ludicrous.
He sighed, “No not really, what I thought she might be able to do is clone him. He wouldn’t be Ron per say but I thought seeing him might help you regain your...sanity.”
She relaxed back into her chair and thought for a bit, now I see what my parents were trying to do. “An insane idea Wade but I can see the pressure you were under; my parents can be very demanding when they want to be. Add to that thick headed as well and somewhat crazy at times.”
Wade sighed, it was a different time. “Kim I tried my best to deter them in their quest to try this. I explained that you would get better without Ron but my plea’s fell on deaf ears.”
“I’m sure you did.” She slumped in the chair, thinking about what they had done. “So Amy tricked you in the end.”
“Yeah she got her revenge, although it seems the world has one great chef now.” He smiled, “I know you want to go see her.”
“Yeah I do.”
His smile turn to a neutral look he had to warn her, “Kim...she is not Ron...their are similarities but they are small; don’t expect her to be Ron; he’s just not there.” He paused then he spoke once again. “Kim personally I think it might be best if you didn’t go; just leave her alone she is doing well all by herself. Its been almost eight years there for her and she really has shined. I think perhaps she has done better than Ron would have ever done. I had a hard time picturing what Ron was going to do after high school. He really hadn’t thought about the future much.”
Kim sighed, “I know Ron was a goofball but a loveable one. I will give your words some thoughts. Thanks Wade. I’ve got to go, I have a lot of thinking to do and some discussions with my parents.”
“Ok I’ll keep in touch.”
“Later.” She closed the box on the screen and Wade’s face disappeared and blue background appeared. She turned the computer off and took a deep breath; it was time to confront her parents again about all this nonsense.
Kim gathered her parents to the kitchen table it was time they spoke again about matters. Kim started “I’ve spoken to Wade and he has filled me in on what transpired during my time away it seems. There are things I don’t remember but you do and that’s what lead you to your decision to try and resurrect Ron.” She paused, she couldn’t believe she was having this conversation. “I can understand your love for me but you should have never tried. You are both extremely smart people but right now I can honestly say that what you did was the stupidest thing ever!” She shook her head in disappointment.
They looked at their daughter and tried to smile, Anne possible was first to speak. “We did it for you...you were so lost... we thought Ron could bring you back to us.”
“I don’t think even the sight of Ron would have helped Mother, depression is a part of loss; I just went to the extremes of it. I’m better now, not one hundred percent but getting there. Trying to bring back Ron cost you too much...it was foolish.”
“Nothing is foolish if it for your child.” James possible said with love in his voice, he would do anything for his daughter. “All we wanted was for you to be well again.”
Kim sighed, she knew they meant well. She had her say now it was time to move forward. “Ok, enough of the past we are only going to deal with the here and now.”
The Possible’s looked at each other and joined hands they were so proud of their daughter. Ready to take on the world even after everything that happened to her. When Amy had tricked them they knew that they had made a monumental mistake but they had to live with their decision; a new life hung in the balance. Ronette needed someone and they were all she had.
“I want to know more about this new Ron...”she corrected herself , “Ronette. So you took her in, for how long?” They had explained a lot of this before but she wanted to go over it again to make sure she had all details.
Anne smiled, she was hoping Kim would ask more about Ronette. “Well as I told you before she had no memories of anyone and could hardly speak a sentence. It took a long while for her to trust us, there were a lot of nights of screaming and crying.” Anne remembered, those were very emotional days for her and Ronette. She didn’t have Kim to go to anymore and that hurt her so. Ronette needed her and it seemed that she did as well.
“I don’t think I can imagine.” Kim said with sympathy.
Anne continued, “As time went by she learned again to speak properly and the terrors dwindled away. She did have strange memories which I dismissed as dreams but I knew what they were.” She stared at Kim knowing she had the answer.
“Our adventures.” Kim sighed, she secretly hoped this new Ron would remember their times together but it seemed that was all but a dream.
“Yes, bits and pieces of them, all in a jumbled mess, which scared her more than anything. I told her to forget them and in the months to come they all but vanished. Perhaps it was part of the process of her development.”
There Kim had her answer, her memories of times past all gone; dismissed as bad dreams. She wished she could do that. “So she got better and you shipped her off?”
“Well it really wasn’t my decision...it was hers. You see she knew about you, as I always compared her to you. I think she felt that she was filling shoes that she shouldn’t be. When I presented her with a choice to move out, she took it as a challenge. I told her she could come back at any time, that she could call this place her home.”
“So she went to live with your friend in Go city.”
“Yes Linda, her husband was killed in a car accident and she needed help desperately and Ronette said she would go for awhile. She never came back.” Anne smiled.
“You said she’s a chef.”
“Oh well...” She had to smile at this, “She’s one of the best chefs in the world, she is half owner of Chez Ramond.”
“Best Chef in the world?”
“Yeah, her culinary arts have been show cased around the world and with that she is listed as one of the best Chef’s on the globe. She had begun to train others now.”
“Ron...one the best Chefs in the world?” Kim said with complete and utter surprise in her voice.
“Well Ronette is?”
“How did she manage that?”
“Well that’s a story, seems my friend Linda took Ronette out to a fancy Restaurant and well the food was atrocious. Ronette marched right into the kitchen and confronted the cook. He took it personally and demand and apology. Ronette did more than that she cooked up the meal again and made him eat it. Well he had to eat crow and well with speaking to the owner they hired her on the spot.
From there the restaurant signed her up for a course in New York City with some of the finest Chefs around to learn the finer points of things. After graduating top of the class she returned and made a name for herself there. Soon word spread about the food and she was coaxed away from that establishment to Chez Ramond. It’s the best restaurant in Go City, with bookings almost filled every night.
Two years ago, she was offered a partner ship in the business and she took it. What I found out was that she had an offer from a prestige Chef in New York to come and work for him at his Restaurant. So the owner had to do something to make her stay, so he offered her a partnership in the business with a lot of control on how things ran. Since they were friends she took it. I think it was the right thing to do, she has made a lot of friends along the way and to leave all that; I don’t think she would be happy.”
Kim sat there stunned, she never thought that Ron would have been able to do those things. “Wow.”
“Yeah I’m very proud of her.” Anne said as she smiled.
“So when is the last time you saw her?”
“Last Christmas, she came down to celebrate with us. We send emails back and forth; she still helps my friend Linda with things as well.”
Kim had a thought, but she wasn’t sure how this was going to sound. “How does she act? Is she an over the top girl?”
Anne smiled, “Well she does like her long blonde hair. As for acting she is a go getter and is not afraid to try something, she is sort of a tom boy. She loves to ski and snowmobile and you should see the car she drives.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah its an old one...a...a...oh darn I’m not good with names. Anyway she rebuilt it, with some help from Wade, its beautiful. Its Sapphire blue and its fast.”
“She fixed up a car?”
“Yes, all by herself.” Anne smiled a big smile.
Kim scratched her head, she remembered back to what Wade had said, she wasn’t Ron and this seemed to prove it. “So does she still live with your friend.”
“Oh no, no no...she has this huge house in this lovely subdivision and when I say its huge it’s huge.”
“Oh...so she is well off.”
“Yeah...lets just say that.”
Kim now really wanted to meet her, “Do you have a picture of her?”
Anne thought, “Let me think, I think James took a few pictures last Christmas.” Anne looked at him and he got up and went to the living room and in a few moments came back with a small envelope.
“I think there are a few of her in there.” James said holding out the package to her.
Kim wasn’t sure if she really wanted to see the pictures; she sighed and opened the package.
