The tiny bell above the door jingled quietly - causing Lydia to look up from her book. One good thing about working at the local book store was all the books she could read in a eight hour day. A tall, good-looking guy around her age walked into the building carefully - scanning his surroundings as he moved. "Hi. Can I help you with anything?" He sure looked lost in a store full of books. "Uh, yeah. My.." He glanced at her a little embarrassed. "My moms got a birthday coming up and she loves to read.."
Lydia smiled. "That's sweet.. what kind of books does she like?"
"Romance, I think..."
The guy gave Lydia a once over - obviously liking what he saw. She was standing before him now simple in jeans and a black pull over sweater. She sure looked like a good hearted, down to earth kind of girl. "My names Adam, by the way.." His cheeks flushed a little crimson as Lydia extended her hand and smiled brightly. "I'm Lydia. I'll show you where the romance section is."
The two took their leave towards the back of the building where all of the lovey dovey books were located - leaving a very ticked off ghost behind. Beetlejuice appeared in the reflection of the mirrored glass at the front of the store - his eyes set on Lydia. "My names Adam - by the way - look at me! I'm such a douche bag and mommy likes romance books because she’s a douche bag too.." Beetlejuice's voice mocked Adam's as he watched them together in the back of the store - Lydia giggled at something - something stupid Adam had probably said, and she placed her hand ever so on his arm as he made her laugh again. "I'm gonna puke.." The ghost grumbled, giving one last look before he disappeared back to the Neitherworld.
Later that evening Lydia sat on her bed - finishing one of the books she'd bought from the book store. It was very peaceful in her room without Beetlejuice but there was a growing ache inside her chest every minute they weren't together. As if on cue someone cleared his throat and caused her head to turn. "Hey Beej.." He sure didn't look happy to see her - but ever since the realization of lust between them - he hadn't been the same. "Can I come over?" He asked quietly - his voice thick with grief. He definitely had something on his mind. "Uh, sure..." And she said his name three times.
Beetlejuice stepped through the mirror and went to her beside the bed. "What's up, babes?" Closing her book Lydia smiled. "Not much.. I can't hang out long because I have a.. I mean, I'm going out.."
"...with douche bag Adam?"
"How did you? Beetlejuice - are you spying on me?"
"No!" He protested then flattered. "I just came to see you at work today and saw you two in the back of the store laughing. It's not fair.." Beetlejuice crossed his arms in front of himself - he wanted more then anything to stomp his feet - scream in her face and demand that she not see this Adam guy. She was HIS. Or at least, he wanted her to be. A sigh escaped him. Lydia stood to her feet and narrowed her eyes. "This is getting ridiculous Beej! You don't want me but you don't want anyone else to have me either!" She was shrieking now - her tiny hands in fists at her sides. "You are being so selfish! I get it - I really do - I'm just a girl - you don't want me as anything but a friend - but you're being a pretty shitty friend nowadays!"
Beetlejuice stood in front of Lydia and growled at the thought. "I am your friend! I'm the only fucking friend you've got and I'm just trying to be a decent... fuck I'm not even a human LYDIA I'm nothing! You deserve BETTER THEN NOTHING!" They were face to face now - ready to fight. Their relationship had definitely went down hill in the past month and for the life of her Lydia couldn't figure out why she still wanted him so badly. "Who are you to tell me what I deserve! I know what I want Beetlejuice and I want you - every fucking day I think about us being together and being happy like we once were but you're to fucked up to let that happen!"
They stared at each other for a long painful minute until Lydia finally looked away. "You don't think we belong together but I know what I feel inside, Beej.." Her hand found her heart and she sighed, looking down at their feet. "I can't wait around on you to figure it out because sometimes I think you never will... but I love you, Beetlejuice - I love you with all my heart." The poltergeist just stared in amazement - watching as Lydia backed away and shook her head. He hadn't said it back. This was hopeless. "I told Adam I'd meet him at seven. I'll see you later.." With that said she walked past him and out her bedroom - never looking back.

I love you Beetlejuice - I love you with all my heart. He hadn't known what to say to that. Lydia had never told him she loved him before and it was somewhat surprising. The first time they'd kiss he hadn't wanted it to be a spur of the moment mistake but now he realized that she was in love with him and wanted to be with him no matter what. No matter if he was dead and she was only eighteen. They had been friends for so many years but with time everything changes and he was just now realizing that their relationship had blossomed from childhood friends to something much more passionate. He couldn't lose her - not for anything in the world.
He loved her.
So here he was - wandering down a deserted street as the rain poured down, soaking him to the bone. The thunder was cracking loud above his head but he didn't care. He had to find her. Lydia hadn't said where Adam was taking her but Beetlejuice had a bond with the little breather and he'd be able to find her - it would just take some time.

"Is everything okay, Lydia? You look like you've lost your best friend."
Lydia forced a small, sad smile. "Yeah. I'm okay. I did, though, have a fight with my best friend. Things are definitely going down hill with me and him.." Adam's eyes widened. "Him?"
"Yeah, Beej. BJ. We've been friends for a long time but he's been acting weird lately. We've been fighting all the time. I think I have lost him." She swallowed a tiny whimper at the thought. She couldn't lose Beetlejuice. He had been there for her when no one else had. They had shared so many things - had so many wonderful experiences together. "He's in love with you." Adam said finally - realizing that he'd lost her after her last statement. "What? No. He's not." She almost felt her heart break. "Lydia - I know that if me and you had been friends for so many years I would be in love with you. You're a great girl. There's nothing not to love."
"You don't know me." She assured quietly, forcing another smile. Just then the door opened in the tiny cafe and a very wet and ragged Beetlejuice stepped inside. He shook like a dog - dampening his surroundings. Blue eyes met blazing green ones and Lydia stood to her feet. "Adam, uh.. excuse me for one minute.." She assured - dashing towards the ghost. Beetlejuice could make a big scene in the Neitherworld when he was angry and they weren't exactly in that place just then. "Beej.." His eyes were rimmed in red and if she didn't know any better she'd sworn he'd been crying. "Beej?"
He reach for her hand and took it - holding it up to his nonbeating heart. "Lyds.. I found you.." He assured quietly - brushing a single tear from her cheek as she looked up at him. She'd never seen him look so broken. "Babes, I do love you.. you're the only thing I've ever loved in my whole existence and I want to be with you. I can't not be with you.." Everything seemed to fall away as Lydia nodded, understanding exactly what he said - smiling through her tears. Before she could stop him, Beetlejuice was on his knees before her and they were almost at eye level. "More then lovers, more then friends.. I need you, Lyds. I need you in everyway.." He was whispering now - his eyes closed in exhaustion. He felt her hand on his shoulder and heard her sign. "..but, Adam.." And she was turning from Beetlejuice - looking back at her date for the evening.
Adam was sitting at their table with a bewildered look on his face. That older guy was Lydia's best friend? The one that was obviously in love with her - from the way he was acting now. Lydia mouthed an "I'm sorry" and turned back to Beetlejuice - who was gone. "Beetlejuice?" The cafe door swung closed. She pushed herself through the door quickly and scanned the alley. "Beej?! Where are you? Bee-." He was leaning against the building - staring down at his feet. "Hey.. you left? Why?" He forced himself to look at her - he had never felt so exposed and emotional. He'd confessed his undying love for her and she'd turned back to her date. The douche bag she didn't even know! "You don't even know him, Lydia. How could you pick him.." His voice broke with grief and he swore he wouldn't cry. Not for her - not anymore. "Pick him? Beej. I'm here! I'm with you.. I always want to be with you.."
They looked at each other then. "I love you." He assured quietly and there was nothing but truth in his words. "I love you too, Beej. Let's get out of here.. Adam didn't look to pleased to be losing his date." Beetlejuice grinned at the thought. Douche bag.
