PART IV; Crime and Punishment
~*~*~*~*~
To say they weren’t mad would be an understatement. Of course they were mad. There were raised voices at one point, and that was followed with questions.
However, the greatest question was who was the more mad. Was it Jackie, who had walked into his niece’s bedroom that morning only to find two Jades in the bed, and is also confused on why the two were half naked in each other’s arms?
Or was it Uncle, who was mad at Tohru for leaving such a spell out in the open where Jade can get her hands on it and use it for her own means?
Or was it Tohru, who was mad at himself for not putting his notebook in a more secure location?
Or, was it Jade, who was the most angry?
She didn’t know why she was angry, but she was. During this whole thing, Jade was set aside, while the three adults argued over on what to do with the confused and afraid magically crated copy of Jade that sat in between them.
The poor clone was trying her best to try and say something to them, but the only people who seemed to realize that she wanted to speak was Jade and Jackie. Uncle and Tohru barely made eye contact.
From what Jade could gather from the various chatter from the adults, one was that Tohru does indeed have a duplication reversal spell that would make the two Jades fuse into one (painlessly, he pointed out).
When he broke down the ingredients of the potion, Uncle burst out that he did not have said ingredients, and he has to order them from out of state. He even went so far as the put it mathematically and said that if he was to order them at that moment, he would get them by that time tomorrow.
When it seemed that it was dying down, it came to the matter of Jade’s punishment. Despite that Jade had came clean and told her uncle Jackie that she did indeed make that magical clone using spells that were in Tohru’s notebook and did sneak off to the arcade while the clone did her homework, Jackie was still upset. And what was else, was that Jackie couldn’t quite look at Jade right, still wondering why her and her clone was in the bed and all.
Before Jade could even think of what to say, she founded herself in the same windowless room where she done her homework, only this time the door was closed and locked, leaving her inside with nothing but a few magazines.
It was maybe a little extreme, but they were all pretty mad. Jade could only sit on the floor, her arms crossed and fuming in anger, looking at the closed door. She was not to leave the room, nor was her clone, who was also grounded and was forced to stay in the library, was to come to in the room.
She didn’t know what was going on down the hall, but, beyond the anger, she felt worried and sad. These feelings, she came to realize, were partly hers, but more from her clone. Her clone, she could feel, was confused because she couldn’t quite understand what was happening, afraid because of the raised voices, and sad because she was not with Jade.
She could only guess what was happening.
The Jade Copy sat silently in the seat, watching as Uncle paced around the room in though, Tohru sitting close by nodding off, and Jackie looking at her with an odd look on his face.
Uncle had Tohru’s notebook in his hand, reading the duplication reversal spell. He muttered to himself, his bushy white brow arched.
“Some come from China, others, Japan. Some, we can get from out of town.” Uncle spoke up, referring to the ingredients. “We must leave, to get proper components.”
“Can’t we just order them all? Ow!” Jackie held his head in pain when Uncle gave him a swift strike.
“It would be cheaper!” Uncle stated. “We leave now!”
Jackie only sighed as Uncle walked away. He turned to Tohru and the copy.
“Keep an eye on...umm, her.” Jackie pointed to the copy. “And make sure Jade stay in that room.”
Tohru nodded, standing up as Jackie left. He looked to the copy, who looked up at him confused and innocently. Even though he was upset that Jade got into his spells, he did feel a small sense of pride that his spell worked so well. He used the potion on some alley cats in the back, and it made him happy when he made a kind and cuddly copy of a rather disgruntled tabby.
He didn’t think it would work on humans, however. He had thought about using it on himself, but never got around to it. But seeing this obviously different Jade, made him proud of his own work.
He let out a great yawn, scratching his head. He had stayed up all night once more, studying on his magic. He was about to lay for a nap when Jackie came in with two Jades. Jade had admitted to her crime, though she didn’t seem to happy for some reason.
Tohru walked across the room to the desk and sat down, when he heard the Jade Copy spoke up.
“So…I’m in big trouble?” She asked.
Tohru looked at the clone. “Umm…Jade is.”
“Is that why she is in the next room?” The copy asked.
Tohru nodded. “Yes. She must be punished for what she had done.”
“Then why not make her clean around the store? Why lock her in the room?” the clone lowered her head. “I miss her.”
Tohru found this to be odd behavior for a copy, even with the altered personality. Quite honestly, it was Jackie who came up with the idea of separating the two, though Tohru couldn’t understand why. By the look on the copy’s face, she was taking this punishment pretty hard.
He wondered how Jade was taking it.
Jade let out a huff and kicked the magazine away from her, staring at the wall in frustration. She told the truth, and still she gets in trouble. She wanted to kick down that door, and she didn’t know why! All she can think of is her clone, sitting there while the adults chattered.
All she wanted to do was ask why she was such a bad thing, but no one even paid attention to her! All they cared about was getting rid of her, and that just ticked Jade off! What was wrong with keeping her around for a little? It was the weekend! Now, the copy is still sitting in the library, all confused and afraid, while Jade is left in here to fester.
She wanted to have fun today, with her copy. Go to the park to shoot some hoops, play on the playground, even play a few games. Why not, its Saturday. It would be like having a sister she never had.
Back when she first messed with the duplication spell, she didn’t really care much for the copies, and only wanted to follow Jackie. But, actually stopping and hanging out with her copy made her rethink.
With a forlorn sigh, Jade slumped to the ground against the wall. She wanted to get out of there.
The Jade Copy was surprised. It didn’t take very long for that giant of a man to fall asleep at the desk, snoring loudly. She stood up and wondered up to him, giving him a gentle push. He didn’t budge; he was out cold. She so wanted to go and be with Jade, but she was forbidden to do that.
All she can think of is being with her ‘sister’, but she is unable to do so. It upset her. Upset her enough that she wanted to throw something. She picked up a book that was on the desk and turned to give it a good toss across the room, when she stopped to look at what she was about to throw.
It was a composition notebook, and written on the front in ink was ‘Tohru’s, Do Not Touch’. She looked at the book in wide eyed wonder, opening it up and reading it. There were spells inside. Some of these spells were of alteration, such as the length of one’s hair or the taste of some food. There was a spell that can change someone’s skill color to that of a brighter or darker pigmentation.
As she turned the pages, she became more and more absorbed at what was written. She then came to a page with a spell that caught her eye. It was a duplication spell, and adjacent to this spell on the next page was a spell that altered the mental personality of someone. Along with this was a note, stating that these two spells can be combined in a single drinkable potion.
“This must be what Jade used.” The clone mused. She read it more, and slowly, a thought began to grow in her mind. It was a devious thought, one that she didn’t expect. She turned to the slumbering Tohru, poking him in his large side. “Tohru? You awake?”
His only answer was a snore, so she poked again, and a smile appeared on her face.
“Hey, Tohru. If it’s not okay to mess around with your book, please say so now.”
Tohru only snored again.
“Thank you.”
