Disclaimer: Nothing about Danny Phantom is mine. If it were, they'd still be on. I make no money from this story. Come on, Butch! They've gota HUGE loyal fan base! |
Skulker looked at the two boys for a moment, and frowned, not exactly sure what to do. It was obvious that they . . . well, one was dieing, and the other was Evaporating (a particularly nasty way for a ghost to leave), and it was a person . . . two people who had been thought to have died years ago.
Skulker shook his head, and remembered back to fifteen years previous, when Danny Phantom had literally given his life for the Earth and for The Ghost Zone, and how that sacrifice had changed the face of both worlds.
‘Not that the little brat hadn’t before,’ Skulker mused. But it was his final sacrifice that had changed the destinies of not only those he called his ‘Earthly, Human’ family, but that of several of the ghosts in the Zone as well.
Skulker frowned at the ravaged figures before him, and shook his head. Dan Phantom had certainly done a number on them. The Danny part of Danny Phantom was obviously paralyzed from the waist down and clearly very weak, while the Phantom part of Danny Phantom was blind and also weak.
Not to mention the scar that ran down the length of both of their faces.
Skulker was not stupid, not by a long shot. He never had been . . . one couldn’t be a Hunter, and be stupid. He’d just been constantly outsmarted by the being . . . beings who lay before him, unconscious, obviously each others energies the only thing keeping them going; energies which were observably fading.
Skulker closed his eyes, and thought back to when he’d first been approached by the Ghost Boy, and how he’d laughed off the warning about the adult Dan Phantom, who’d apparently, somehow, though Danny didn’t know how, escaped from some guy called Clockwork’s Realm.
Skulker had merely laughed, and said he’d never heard of Dan Phantom. (Which made sense, Danny had answered angrily, since he’d been defeated in another time zone, and none of the events that had brought Dan Phantom to life had happened in the one they were in.)
It was too bad that Skulker hadn’t realized that the Ghost Boy had been almost nothing short of terrified of the ghost he'd tried to warn them about. He and the others had been pretty vainglorious, assuming that it was they that Danny had been afraid of, though never before had he barely even trembled when he faced them. Had Skulker really been paying attention, he would have noticed the signs that signified someone as ‘prey’.
The things like the Ghost Boy’s shaking voice, darting eyes, arms crossed protectively over his chest, and his hunched posture . . . not to mention the overly wide green eyes that if one weren’t paying attention, they could almost get lost in.
Nope, he had missed all the signs of extreme fear, and he growled as he knew he had given Ember many, many reasons that day to call him an incompetent ghost hunter.
Although, no one else had seen the signs either, but then, they hadn’t been trained for that. All they knew was that the Ghost Boy had been highly agitated when no one had taken him seriously . . . which was pretty much par for the course for him. A well-traveled course which was a good deal of the reason why none of the ghosts really paid attention to his warnings that time.
However, in all fairness, by the same token, it hadn’t exactly been easy to comprehend that the Ghost Boy, the disgustingly pure symbol of Ultimate Good, could or ever would consider being the practitioner, let alone the embodiment of Ultimate Evil. It was a laughable idea really, and many of the Ghost Zones inhabitants had done just that, laughed him off, and then for fun, practice, and a little bit of nostalgia, had tried to destroy him.
They’d missed, of course, but it didn’t stop them from chasing him out of the portal and back to Earth. They’d returned to the Ghost Zone defeated, but then, they’d half expected that, and weren’t too terribly disappointed with the results. Besides, it had been a total lark, they’d all gotten out of the GZ for a while, and also gotten some badly needed exercise.
The laughter in the Ghost Zone soon stopped, and the screaming (and when a ghost screams with agony and terror, it is not a pleasant sound) started after Dan Phantom had made his presence known. They tried to fight back, some still did, but area by area of the Ghost Zone fell to Dan and his absolutely insatiable desire to own and conquer everything he saw or that he perceived to be the minutest threat. He had even beaten Sidney Poindexter to a smear when he’d merely said the name ‘Danny’ in the Evil ghost’s presence, and that was just plain wrong.
The ghosts that Dan Phantom didn’t destroy outright, he forced to submit to him and his will. Skulker himself had come up against Dan Phantom on two occasions, and only lived to tell both tales because he had gotten some last minute help from Ember the first time, and Technus the next. After that, they’d just run from one end of the Ghost Zone to the other avoiding Dan at all costs, and trying to survive him as best they could without being made his slaves.
Slowly, more and more ghosts joined them in the absolute remotest parts of the GZ, and all the while, Dan Phantom bragged to whoever listened, what he was going to do with Danny Phantom when he caught him, and even Walker, the almost sure king of revenge (and incidentally the only one to really defeat Danny Phantom, transitory though it was) thought the plan was a little over-the-top.
While most of the ghosts in the GZ would have been more than happy to never have heard of the Ghost Boy, and would like nothing more than to destroy the little brat, Dan Phantom’s plans to bring his younger self under his control were . . . disturbing . . . to say the least. Particularly since he had waxed so poetic about how, in his original timeline, he’d completely butchered the much weaker, much more vulnerable, Human half of Danny Phantom. Skulker hoped never to hear that little story again, and almost, not quite, but almost wished he’d been there to at least try and stop some of the things that were done. Dan Phantom took hatred to a level that even Pariah Dark thought unreasonable . . . and as the king reborn of the Ghost Zone that Danny Phantom dethroned, well, that was saying something . . . and what was really scary, was that Dan Phantom didn't even need a crown and ring to boost his powers.
Skulker squatted beside the two damaged children . . . he shook his head. The battle they’d fought had been over 15 years previous. They should each, or one anyway, have at least grown up to be a young man, yet, they still looked like children. He sighed, a habit he'd picked up from the humans he'd been around, brushed the long pitch locks from the Human’s face, pushed the long pearl hair back from the Phantom’s, and traced the scars that adorned their young faces.
