Chapter Four
“Talking”
‘Thoughts’
‘The voice’
Inside a rundown hotel room with the air conditioner blowing at full blast and the ceiling fan spinning at full speed, Feral lay on top of an old worn out bed. She groaned and came aware slowly. Rubbing her head, she vaguely remembered being struck there and falling into the ocean.
Gasping in shock she came fully awake and sat up looking wildly around her. The first thing she noted was she was dressed in clothing that was a bit too large for her...sweat pants and pull over shirt, no shoes but at least she was covered and no longer naked which was an immense relief. Turning her attention to the room she was in. She realized quickly that it was a rather seedy hotel room worn out furniture, a bathroom and simple open closet told her that.
But how had she gotten here? Worried and fearful she lunged to her feet. Pacing about she tried to piece together what had happened to her. She remembered being shot at using her mental ‘paws’ to try and prevent the bullet from striking her and only being marginally successful. The blow sent her body falling from the cliff near that horrible place she’d been held prisoner to the churning ocean below then the feel of the cold water closing over her and that was it.
So how had she gotten to this hotel and where had the clothes come from? She looked around and found and discovered a wallet, money, and a key laying on the bed. Frowning, she snatched up the wallet and rifled through it. It held credit cards, more money and an ID that said the wallet belonged to someone named Aaric Bosch. Checking the money, she discovered it was foreign. She recognized it as being similar to the country of Kyushu. ‘I was right! They had taken me to another country.’ Feral thought unhappily.
Kyushu was where the business Kat, Mr. Young hailed from. It was located across the ocean from Megakat City. At least Feral finally knew where she was in the world but that didn’t answer how she had ended up here at this hotel or where ‘here’ was. As she tried to come up with an explanation for her present situation, her unwelcome voice from within spoke up.
‘It’s about time you woke up. I was getting tired of just laying here doing nothing.' The voice complained irritably.
“How did I get here?” Feral demanded ignoring the peevish tone of the voice.
‘I brought you here, of course.’ It snorted derisively in response.
“What? How!?” Feral blurted in shock afraid of what the answer would be.
‘Well, obviously, I had to take over your body while you were unconscious. You should thank me for that because if I hadn’t done so we would have drowned.' It said haughtily.
Feral swallowed her horror. Yes, it was a good thing the voice had saved her but it wasn’t comforting to know the voice was capable of highjacking her body and doing things with it. Could it do that to her when she was conscious? The thought of that sent chills down her back. She bit her bottom lip in consternation. Somehow she had to ensure that never happened no matter what it took. She would never allow herself to become some kind of robot controlled by a voice inside her.
Feral decided to leave that subject for now and get some answers on other things that disturbed her. “How did you get a hold of this money and wallet?” She asked dreading the answer.
‘Do you really what to know?’ The voice said teasingly
Feral shuddered again. She had a bad feeling the answer would be the voice had used her to kill to obtain what it needed. It was bad enough she had to kill those at the facility but to have her body do it without her knowledge made her sick with anguish.
The voice had no compunction against killing, doing it coldly with no remorse. It actually seemed to enjoy killing. Feral still had her own morals and killing had always been repugnant to her even when it was necessary, like those within the facility. They deserved what they’d gotten when she escaped from there but this........this was wrong in so many ways.
“Why, damn you! Why did you have to kill this Kat when you robbed him?” Feral hissed angrily. She felt like screaming but didn’t want to draw unwanted attention to herself.
‘Because he and his little slave trader friends intended to sell you. So I killed them to stop them from doing that.’ The voice said coldly.
“That doesn’t give you the right to kill them! You had the means to incapacitate them then escape. Killing wasn’t necessary!” Feral growled furiously angry.
‘How would you know? You weren’t aware to know and anyway, you’re one to talk. What about all those you killed during your escape from the company? Was that the right thing to do?’ The voice asked smugly.
Feral felt herself steaming. The voice had no right to compare the two. The reasons were not the same. “You know what? Just shut up! Just shut the hell up!” She snarled in a low voice.
‘You could at least thank me for saving your life and getting you the money and clothes you needed to make your escape complete.’ The voice snapped.
“The clothes don’t fit and there’s not enough money to buy lunch!” Feral said irritably feeling her response was a bit childish but it seemed to have shut the voice up at last.
She had more important things to deal with than a bloody-minded voice so she focused on finding out exactly where she was in conjunction to Kyushu so she could plan a way to leave here for Megakat City. Looking around once more, she spotted some change on the bedside table. She snatched it up, grabbed the room key and headed for the lobby. She found she was on the third floor and decided to take the stairs. Pushing the stair door open cautiously at the main floor. She peered out and was relieved to see no one was around but the desk clerk, whose back was to her sitting in a chair watching TV.
As she strode across the worn looking carpet, she noted the truly seedy appearance of the lobby and knew this was more a flop house than a place most would care to stay at. That at least was a blessing since the way she looked would not cause too many alarms as it would in a more high class place.
Reaching the desk, she called softly, “Excuse me.”
“Wadda ya want?” The tom asked rudely not turning around.
“Could you tell me what town I’m in and how far I am from Kyushu?” She asked knowing the question would sound odd but not having much choice.
Snorting in annoyance the chubby tom turned around to growl at Feral but the moment his eyes fell on her, his mouth dropped open and he stared in horror. The creature standing on the other side of his counter had no fur anywhere on her body.
“What the hell are you?” He finally managed to blurt out.
“That’s a rude question to ask and its none of your business.” Feral snapped, “Now would you please answer my question?”
But the tom continued to stare at her in confused disbelief. Sighing in frustration, Feral whirled away from the counter and began to storm back to the stairwell when her eyes caught sight of a map laying on a table. She quickly walked over to it and picked it up. She pulled it open and studied it but without an idea of her exact location the map couldn’t help her.
Growling angrily she looked back at the desk, “What is the name of this town?” She asked again.
The desk clerk continued to stare at her and refused to answer. Totally frustrated by the lack of response Feral turned her attention back to the table and searched through the papers there. Finally, she came upon a magazine with the hotel’s address on it. She was in the town of Narita.
Pulling open the map once more she located the town on the map and discovered she was in a small border town near the sea and some hundred miles from Kyushu’s border.
Relieved to know her location at last Feral made plans for returning to Megakat City. She made for an alcove where the payphones were located ignoring the desk clerk’s shout to leave the map where she’d found it. Counting her change, she reached the phone, picked up the received, dumped the money in and hit zero.
“Hello, operator. I would like to place a toll call to a Felina Feral in Megakat City.” Feral said then gave her name, praying Felina would accept her call then waited as the operator connected her. She had been missing a long time and wasn’t certain if Felina would treat the call as a sick joke by someone.
A phone rang in an apartment in far off Megakat City. Felina Feral was sitting on her couch in her living room with Chance Furlong by her side. They were enjoying a TV show when the call came in. Sighing, Felina reached behind her couch to the table where the phone was and retrieved it.
“Hello?” She responded. The operator told her who the caller was causing Felina’s eyes to widen in shock. She straightened up so fast it startled Chance.
“Felina?’ Chance asked concerned it was some kind of bad news.
Felina ignored him and answered the operator’s question. “Yes! I’ll take the call!” She nearly shouted. Only a moment later she was connected but the voice of her uncle sounded strange and different.
“Felina?” The voice said hesitantly.
“Yes. It’s me. Uncle is that you?” Felina asked hopefully.
A sigh of relief came through the line. “Yeah, it’s me, though you can tell something bad has happened to me. Listen, Felina, I have some urgent questions I need you to answer for me.”
While Feral was reconnecting with her niece, miles from his location, at a remote restricted area, stood a complex made up of one large building surrounded by many types of training fields. Inside the building, Director Jason was reviewing the files of SAT members deciding on who were the best qualified to hunt down number seventeen. One file in particular caught his attention just as the door to his office was opened quietly then closed.
Jason glanced up and watched Chief Taji Ogata walk in.
Taji Ogata had been Chief of SAT for some forty years now. He had short messy grey silver hair and dark green eyes that stared with displeasure at Jason. He was an Asian Bobtail with copper colored fur. He was wearing his uniform with his rank prominently placed on the left side of his chest. When he reached Jason’s desk, he pulled out a nearby chair and sat down facing the other tom.
“Dare I assume you’ve finished picking the team you need or do you require more time?” Taji asked gruffly.
“I’ve finished. However, there is one more person I would like to add. His file is quite compelling.” Jason drawled tossing the file to Taji across the desk.
Taji didn’t pick up the file as he could plainly see the name printed there. He sighed, though he wasn’t real happy about letting this particular person go, he had been ordered to give Director Jason anyone he asked for.
‘Let’s hope he knows what he’d getting himself into.’ Taji thought unhappily. However, he did want to try to dissuade Jason from his choice.
He shook his head and started to object, “I can’t allow him to go. He’s too…”
“He’s perfect!” Jason cut Taji’s objection off before he could voice it. “He’s exactly what I need to hunt her down and stop her.”
Taji blinked in outraged dismay. He didn’t feel Jason knew how foolish his request was but he could see the director would not change his mind. Mentally, Taji could only shake his head. The person being chosen was not someone he would send on this type of hunt but perhaps the Kat wouldn’t accept the job at all if it wasn’t to his liking. Nothing he could do about it anyway.
“Very well. I can see you refuse to be dissuaded from asking him. But that doesn’t mean he will take the mission.” Taji said flatly.
“And why is that?” Jason asked bluntly
“He only goes on missions that are.....hmm how do I put this?......that are to his liking.”
“Really? Well I’m just going to have to make it something he will be begging to take. May I please speak to him?” Jason said arrogantly.
Taji glanced away a moment then nodded. “He should be in the locker room changing since his training day has ended.”
“Excellent. Where would I find the locker room?” Jason asked getting to his feet and picking up a piece of paper.
“Just turn left once you leave this room and head straight ahead. The locker room well be at the end. I’ll have the team you’ve selected ready for departure in two hours.” Taji said taking the list Jason handed him. “Oh, and Director? Whatever happens after this....he’s your problem now.” Taji said with a blank face then stood and left the room.
Jason stared after the retreating back until it vanished mulling over that rather cryptic message the Chief had left him with. Shrugging it off, he left the room himself and made his way to the locker room.
He opened the door and stepped in then paused to look around for his subject. He spotted a tom sitting on a chair, at the end of the room smoking a cigaret.
“Isn’t it against the rules to smoke in the locker room?” Jason asked casually moving slowly toward the tom then halting at the end of the row of lockers a few paces away.
“Fuck you.” The tom said not even bothering to see who he was talking to.
“Hayden Swasey.” Jason said causing the tom to look up and glare at him.
Hayden Swasey was an Abyssinian with warm reddish-brown fur with black ticking. His short brown hair swept over his black eyes as he gave Jason an aggravated stare.
“Moments ago, I requested your involvement in a special SAT team. The mission is to stop a a dangerous criminal who escaped a secure facility. After reading your file, I determined you were perfect for the job especially considering your track record.” Jason said smoothly.
“Yeah, I heard about what you need the team for and you can just take it and shove it up your ass cause I’m not going along.” Swasey spat.
Jason raised an eyebrow at that flat response. “May I ask why?”
Swasey snarled back, “Two things. First, Kats like that aren’t worth my time and second, I have no desire to take orders from a prick like you. You’re the kind of asshole I love shooting between the eyes just for fun.”
“Even if you get the chance to hunt a down a serial killer?” Jason purred coaxingly.
“Say what?”
Jason gave him a cold smile. “I work for a prison that handles the world’s most dangerous serial killers. During one of our weaker moments, this killer we want you to hunt, escaped, killing over fifteen guards.”
“Really?” Swasey eyed him skeptically.
“Yes, really. Here’s their picture.” Jason reached into his inside pocket and pulled out a picture, handing it over to Swasey. He took the picture from Jason and look at it.
Swasey took the picture and stared at it. “What the hell is that thing?” He blurted in shock.
“That’s the serial killer. I want you and your teammates to hunt her down and use any means necessary, however....”Jason paused until he saw Swasey giving him his complete attention.
“However......what?”
“She cannot be killed. We need her alive so under no circumstances is she to be killed but you can hurt her as much as you want to. Kill her and you are out of SAT for good.” Jason warned him.
“Then why the hell should I bother? Let someone else take her. Seems a lot of work for just some killer.” Swasey snorted throwing the picture back at Jason.
Jason caught it then narrowed his eyes at the tom. “She’s no ordinary killer. Unlike most serial killers who follow a pattern of behavior.....she doesn’t. She has no specific type of target, she kills them all, kittens, old, young, male, female......it doesn’t matter to her. She’s just a cold blooded killer who enjoys the kill for killings sake.”
“Sounds like one tough bitch but its still not any fun for me if I can’t kill her and it sounds like the hunt would end far to fast.” Swasey snorted.
“Can you be sure of that?” Jason asked goading the tom.
Swasey growled at him, “What are you saying? That I wouldn’t be able to hunt her down? That I couldn’t win against her?”
“Well, she was once a solider like yourself before she was imprisoned. So she’ll know how you’ll react and what you’ll do to try and recapture her so that will make taking her harder and there is a very good chance she could kill you before you could do anything to stop her.” Jason said lazily.
Swasey lunged to his feet and grabbed Jason by his shirt collar, holding the tom close to his face.
“If you think that freak of nature can beat me, you’re seriously whacked!” He snarled hotly. “I’ll take this mission and prove she’s no match for me and bring her back to you, beat, bloody but alive.” Swasey shook Jason for good measure released him to drop to the floor then stormed out of the locker room.
Once the door closed behind Swasey’s furious form Jason straightened his clothes and smirked. His plan to trick Swasey had worked to perfection. Now he had the perfect killing machine hunting down number seventeen. He wouldn’t fail this time! No matter what he would ensure she would be locked away for the rest of her life.
Back in the town of Narita, where Feral had taken refuge, one could see it was a pleasant little beach town of about a hundred souls. It boasted its own hospital, schools, a busy market place, pristine beaches for tourists, and high mountains. Fishing was their main source of income. Far out from shore an island could be seen. A little to the northeast away from the beach, homes clustered together in a line. On the top of a small hill overlooking the beach and homes, stood a middle-sized two story bed and breakfast.
The place used to be filled with tourists at the height of its popularity. It had once been the pride and joy of the Taylor family when it was a hotel but now it was a private home where their daughter, Cindy lived. It had passed into the paws of Cindy and her sister Helen on their mother’s death. But now she was the sole owner since her sister’s death.
The letter from the company Helen had worked for brought Cindy the terrible news of the accident on the distant island that had ended her sister’s life. The news had sent Cindy reeling into an abyss of grief and depression.
It had taken her close friends more than a few months to pull her out of it. Now, standing before her mirror in the bathroom some three months after she’d lost Helen, she stared at herself.
It had been so very difficult to look at her image and not see her sister looking back since they were identical twins. It simply had hurt far too much. Now she stared at herself once more. Unlike Helen, Cindy had her hair in a pixie cut and wore no glasses. She had on a simple yellow long-sleeved shirt and short cut blue jeans.
She was planning on opening her shop after leaving it closed for weeks. There were bills to pay including the ones her father had left them and she couldn’t mope around any longer or she could lose her home.
Satisfied with her appearance, she left the bathroom and stepped back into her bedroom. Her eyes fell on the packet Helen had sent her that had arrived a week after her death. She hadn’t the strength to open it and still couldn’t do it today.
She didn’t know what was in the packet other then it was a disk of some kind. For all she knew, it could have a video message from her sister telling her how things were going and asking about everyone back home.
Not able to bear seeing it yet, it lay on her desk right next to her personal home computer collecting dust. Shaking her head Cindy quickly left the room and closed the door behind her. Turning, she headed down the stairs through the small hallway then out the door to the outside. She locked the door and turned to study the breathtaking view that had always pleased her. She could see the homes, schools and beach with the dark blue ocean beyond.
Though it was a cloudy day, she didn’t mind and headed off to work. She preferred to walk to her shop rather then drive as Narita wasn’t that large and was a safe place to go about from home and work no matter the time of day.
After walking just a couple of blocks, Cindy reached the market place. A few more blocks brought her to the front door of her shop called the Three Pages. It was a simple one story building that sold all kinds of books.
Unlocking the front door, she stepped in and flipped the lights in closing the door behind her. The soft light fell over the many shelves of books that filled the room. Near the door was her cashier area and across from it was a neat little conversation area where people could sit and read and talk. She walked in and stepped around the counter to begin turning things on and opening the till. As she worked the door opened suddenly and a group of five kats trouped in, three females and two males.
Cindy smiled and waved at them. The first of the group grinned back, his name was Finn LaMarr, a calico long haired tom with patches of orange, black, and white fur and greenish-yellow eyes. He gave her an intense searching look which made her blush a bit. She knew Finn had been very worried about her. She felt some guilt for putting her friends through such a stressful time with her but was very grateful they had been there during her grieving period.
Standing behind Finn was his best friend, Marco Goldsbie, a red, black, brown, and white striped tabby with copper colored eyes. Marco and Finn were often mistaken for brothers due to the closeness of their friendship.
The three females were Anita DeSena, the youngest (still a teen), a cinnamon colored Oriental short hair with bright jade-green eyes and pink dyed hair cut in a simple boy cut. Elena Mowry was a sable colored Burmese with cobalt blue eyes and flaming red hair that was long and draped over one shoulder and finally, Keira Swaile, a fawn colored Singapura with dark gray eyes and brown hair shorter than Cindy’s.
“Hey, guys.” Cindy said warmly giving them a small smile.
Finn smile at her kindly, “How you doing? Everything okay?”
Cindy looked down shyly at the concerned tone in the tom’s voice. “I’m doing as well as can be expected, taking everything one day at time.” She admitted softly.
“You know if you still need anything...anything at all, you can just ask us.” Keira said earnestly.
“I know and I truly appreciate it, but I need to start relying on myself again or I won’t be able to move on.” Cindy said sadly.
“Still it doesn’t hurt to ask for help every now and then.” Finn insisted moving closer to her.
Marco rolled his eyes but hid a smile. Everyone but Cindy knew how Finn felt about her. He was the one who stayed by her side through the worst of the grief. When the group was passing the store, they had been surprised and pleased to see the light on in the little store.
At first they were concerned that someone who shouldn’t be there was in the store. It was Finn who insisted they check it out. It has pleased them to no end to see Cindy preparing to open the store. It gave them heart to see her trying to pull her life together again.
Cindy had been so distracted by Finn’s concern she hadn’t noted Anita’s changed hair color. She was a little shocked when she saw all that pink hair rather than the she-kat’s formerly dirty blond locks.
“Anita, what happened to your hair?”
“Oh, I was just in a mood for a change. Don’t I look cute?” Anita said smiling and showing off her new hair color.
“And if you do it again without permission, you’ll be grounded till your next lifetime.” Elena promised in a scolding tone.
“Then how did you manage to do it in the first place?” Cindy asked curiously.
“Anita thought she needed to change her looks, so...” Keira began to tell the tale of Anita’s adventure in hair dying.
While the three she-kats argued good naturedly with Anita about her choice in hair color, Finn had moved back out of the way and just listened. Though, Anita, Elena and Keira acted like sisters, they were like him and Marco. They had grown up together forming a family bond among themselves.
Some years later, they met the twins, Helen and Cindy and included them in their group. Marco and Finn had grown quite close to the twins and that reminder made Finn feel guilty. He looked over at his friend and noted the sad expression in his eyes though he tried to hide it from them all.
Finn sighed, how he could have forgotten that Cindy wasn’t the only one mourning over Helen. Marco had grown close to Helen during their college days together. He had planned to tell her how he felt about her when she returned home. ‘He’ll never get the chance now’ Finn thought sadly. He felt terrible about Marco’s lost chance at happiness. He walked up to his best friend’s side and placed a paw on his shoulder.
“Huh?” Marco said blinked at Finn in surprise wondering what the tom was up to.
In a low contrite voice Finn murmured, “I’m sorry. I’ve been so focused on Cindy’s needs that I forgot how you would be feeling losing Helen.”
Marco shook his head sadly, “Don’t be bro. If it were the other way around. I would have done the same.”
“Yeah but…”
“Listen, you just focus on Cindy okay? She needs you. You saw how broken she was to hear about…” Marco couldn’t finish and just shrugged his shoulders.
Finn looked away. “I know and you’re right, as always.”
Marco gave him a small smile, “Too true, bro. So let’s see if we can get Cindy to heal and bring her back to her old self.”
“Yeah, but that will take time and I don’t think I can bring her all the way back.”
“No one can, bro. Things like this change a person but that doesn’t mean they can’t move forward and accept the loss. Like you said, it will simply take time. It’s not just going to happen overnight.” Marco said gently.
Finn sighed and nodded, “I just hope nothing more happens to halt her progress forward.”
Laughter suddenly lit the room, making Finn and Marco turned to see what was happening. All the she-kats were laughing but to their pleasure, Cindy was laughing harder than them all. It had been a long while since that had happened.
Pleased to hear that sound again Marco said, “I hear you, bro. I don’t want anymore bad stuff happening to her again either.”
Finn tried to smile back but he just couldn’t shake the feeling he’d been having for some time now. A feeling that something truly evil was coming their way and their lives would never be the same again. He had tried to shake it off but it just wouldn’t let go of him, it was like a warning of storm approaching. He looked out the window at the gray skies that mirrored his forebodings. 'What could it be?’ Finn thought troubled to his core. He stared out the window at the gray skies that mirrored somehow his dark forebodings.
“Finn?” Cindy’s worried voice spoke suddenly next to him.
Shaking himself mentally, he put a smile on his face and turned to look at Cindy.
“Yes?”
“Is something wrong?”
“No, nothing’s wrong. Nothing’s wrong at all.” He lied.
