Chapter Four
“I didn't know there'd be homework.” Danny whined as Vlad plopped a large, weathered text on the table in front of him. As soon as they got back to the manor, the older halfa lead Danny straight to a enormous library. It was easily three or four times the size of the library at his school, and the books seemed much more diverse.
“Two sets of eyes are better than one Daniel.” Vlad preached as he pulled out a chair opposite of Danny's and opened his own, equally large, book. “I've been researching on my own ever since I found Adrienne, yet I haven't been able to find anything just yet.”
“Wouldn't it be easier to just....”
“Just waltz in with no plan? No information? We have to figure out what she is before we make our move Daniel. We know nothing about her.”
“Whatever.” Danny flipped open the cover of the large volume, taking in the site of the deeply yellowed pages. “Wow, these things are old.”
“Several centuries.” Vlad bragged without looking up from his own book. “Some of them were retrieved from the ghost zone. No modern book would hold any valuable information on ghosts, or whatever Adrienne seems to be.”
Danny hesitated before turning the first page, not wanting to crumble the ancient pages. Not because he had any respect for Vlad's property, but because he, grudgingly, knew that Vlad was right. These books were practically a goldmine, information he never saw before. If he had more time, he would love to page through them casually, absorbing all the crucial facts on the supernatural, despite the fact that he found reading boring. Maybe, if Vlad was feeling generous after they resolved this, he'd let Danny come back here later.
“Yuck, what the hell is that?” Danny wrinkled his nose at the large, black, glob-like monster illustrated on the page. There was no description on the page for the strange beast.
Vlad leaned across the table as Danny held out the book for him to see. The older halfa studied it for a few seconds, before rubbing his temples lightly.
“That's an ink spot Daniel.”
“Oh.” Danny blushed. He kept his mouth tightly shut after that, not wanting Vlad to think he was an idiot. Although, he couldn't figure out why he cared about the older man's opinion.
“You know why you care.” A familiar voice rang through Danny's brain as he thought of Vlad. “You know why you want him to like you.” The voice sang, almost tauntingly.
“Shut up.” Danny mumbled out loud, catching Vlad's attention.
“Excuse me?”
“Nothing!” Danny quickly blurted, realizing his mistake. “Just thinking.”
They continued reading in silence for awhile, until Danny reached page 354 in his book.
“I think I found her!” Danny cried out excitedly! “Well, not Adrienne herself, but something similar!”
Danny looked up to stare at Vlad, but the older man was no longer sitting across from him. The billionaire had gotten up from his chair and walked around the table to stand behind Danny, reading the book from behind his shoulder.
Danny muffled a gasp as Vlad leaned in closer towards him, almost pressing his body against the boy's back.
“He's reading the book.” Danny tried to breath a sigh of relief. “He's just trying to see the book.”
“Sure he is.” The annoying voice chirped back at him.
“You may be right Daniel.” Vlad agreed. Danny could almost feel the vibrations from the man's speech. He was just so close... The young halfa could feel sweat beginning to collect at various points on his body, internal heat warming his face and neck.
“This creature is not a ghost because it has no unfinished business that it is particularly concerned about. The only thing keeping it tied to the human world is a deep regret.” Vlad trailed off. “But that's the only information they give. No notation on powers or talents. Only that normal humans cannot see them, and that they are not truly ghosts, so they cannot enter the ghost zone. Not exactly what I was hoping to find.”
“Maybe nobody knows anything.” Danny choked out. “Hey, could you not stand so close?” Danny regretted the words as soon as he spoke them. Vlad's soft chuckle told him how grand of a mistake he had made.
“Does it bother you Daniel? Having me so near?” Danny couldn't muffle a gasp as the older man slid one of his arms around to rest over Danny's chest. “You're heart is certainly bothered, I can practically hear it pulsating.” Vlad's silken voice sent a shudder up Danny's spine. He prayed that the older man couldn't feel it.
“Vlad, look...” Danny's protest came out, unforgivably, as a pant.
“What's wrong?” Vlad ran his hand slowly downward, towards Danny's stomach. Creeping closer and closer towards an area that was already beginning to swell without any assistance. Danny clenched his eyes shut, unable to find his voice to complain.
“Idiot.” The dry, flat chide came out of nowhere, and it certainly was not what Danny had expected. Vlad slowly, but swiftly removed his hand from Danny's torso and pulled himself away from the younger halfa. “You're so predictable Daniel.”
Quickly walking back towards his own side of the table, Vlad picked up his forgotten text and moved to put it back on the shelf. “This isn't going to get us anywhere.” He complained. “We'll have to think up something else.”
Danny nodded, though Vlad had turned his back. What the hell was that? Why would Vlad want to pull that kind of joke? And most importantly, why hadn't Danny made him stop? The young halfa squeezed his fists tightly, willing the tightness in his groin to go down.
“Damn.” Danny swore to himself. “He hardly did anything! What the hell is wrong with me?”
“When you're ready to stop fighting back.” His mysterious voice answered, clearly bored. “We'll talk.”
A/N: sorry about the delay. I was finishing up my finals, leaving college for the winter, and getting ready for christmas. I hardly had any time to go on the comp. I'm going to update more frequently from now on. Yeah, I know, the romance scenes need to pick up, but I still think it's a little too soon. I will probably toss something in next chapter, but I don't think a lemon is in order just yet. Please review!
