That year winter was much warmer than usual. Despite the strong wind currents sweeping throughout the continent, the sun warmed the cold earth. The agricultural advisors have forecasted a rich harvest, and quite an early one this spring.
It would have been a good end of the year for the people, (Author’s note: in eastern countries a new year – traditionally - starts in spring, but January 1st is the official New Year’s Day.) if it wasn’t for the country’s greatest naval disaster. The Royal Palace was shaken with the news from the warfront, the Fire Lord furious and disappointed with his highest hope, Zhao.
Despite the latest happenings, Mai remained in her high spirits: Fire Lord Ozai had some thinking to do, in the light of the current events, so no one requested her presence. Azula hadn’t called for her in quite a long time too. Though, Mai really doubted Azula wanted to see her.
The Princess seemed to have calmed down after her huge fight with Ozai, but she would never forget, just as everyone else. Up to that day the servants shuddered at the memory of her fury, when the Fire Lord refused her greatest wish.
Of course, Mai had nothing to do with it, whatever Azula reckoned. She honestly fulfilled her part of the plan: talked to the Fire Lord, though you could hardly call it plain talking. His kisses became more demanding with each visit, his hands grew familiar with her body. But fortunately, that day they were interrupted by an urgent message from one of the General’s. He kissed her deeply and promised to think about Azula’s field practice.
And one cold cloudy day the Palace was almost blown up. Some thought a storm had started, mistaken by the cracking whips of lightning, but there was no thunder. In the meantime, the Palace garden was lit on fire.
Royal servants were running around the place, unsure of what to do, whom to call. Lo and Li stood at the edge of the fire line, each pushing the other to say or do something. But nothing could calm down the Princess. Her lips were shut tight into a thin red line. Her hair stayed in perfect order, despite the fast and aggressive movements of her body. Her hands shot out in a frenzied manner, firing strong bolts at trees and ground.
When Mai came up to see what everyone were staring at, the Princess gave an especially strong blow at the plum tree. It burned up in blue flames in a matter of seconds. Mai’s hand jerked forward, but she was fast enough to mask the intention as a movement towards the garden. She thought that it would have been better to try and stop her friend before the whole place got destroyed. But she was stopped in her tracks by a strong and commanding voice:
- What do you think you’re doing?
The Princess stopped abruptly, turning around. The Fire Lord stepped into the garden through the blue fire, bending it away with ease. As he walked towards his daughter, his long robe slightly brushed the grass frozen by the icy breath of winter. His face was serious, more tired than angered.
- My decision is final and even if you set the Palace on fire, you won’t be able to change it. Now get over this circus and stop embarrassing yourself in front of the servants.
Azula’s back straightened and she cast her Father an angered look. She tried to regain her control, but couldn’t suppress the slight trembling of her lips.
- I can not be embarrassed, Father! I’m not Zuko, - the Fire Lord frowned at the mention of his son. - You said yourself that I’m a prodigy, that I am a true talent. But after I’ve proven my abilities, why do you do this to me? Moreover, you suggest such a thing as… as marriage? Why would I want to waste my talent at this point?
- Everyone, leave the court. Immediately! – commanded Ozai, looking Azula in the eye.
Azula crossed her arms on her chest. She looked more than ready to confront her Father. Ozai had always been the only person she wanted to impress with her abilities. And despite her best attempts, Ozai remained the only person with whom she failed to be her cool and collected self.
When people hurried into the building Mai hid behind a marble pillar. The girl tried to blend with the stone, standing in the dark shade. Her whole body froze, caught in the tension of the moment. Silent, she listened. Of course everyone knew better than disobeying orders of the Fire Lord, but Mai thought she understood what had happened, and had to know for sure.
- Now, listen to me, Azula. First of all, if you intend to show off such disrespect for your Father, for your Fire Lord in front of the servants, or any one else, I will not hesitate to punish you. Is that understood?
- Yes, Father, - the Princess’ voice was low and shaking with anger.
- Secondly, you should wait for the right moment to use the power you possess. And, trust me, girl… fighting off Earth Kingdom cities isn’t what I planned for you. Even Omashu.
- But, it will mean breaking down one of the Kingdom’s main strongholds…
- No! It can be handled by others. I need you for a more important mission. But it shall come later. And my suggestion was just an advice. A mission by no means should stop the birth of a new generation. You should think about the future of your country, of the throne. And the sooner you think, the sooner you’ll find a loyal person who will be obeying and loyal to the rules of our family, who shall become your betrothed.
- Then I have a question for you, Father. Why does Zuko’s girlfriend spend so much time with you? Is she your new loyal person, or a little pet you sleep with?
Mai could not mistake the sound that followed for anything else in the world, the loud slap of a palm hitting the soft flesh of the face. She pressed her hot cheek against the cold stone, as her breathing fastened, coming out in small pants. The annoying thought in her head: “What went wrong with our plan?” steadily gave place to the unsure: “What will he say?”
- She is not your brother’s girlfriend anymore.
Mai closed her eyes, pressing closer to the column, hoping that she wouldn’t be heard or seen. Soon both the Father and the daughter left the court, but the thin teenager remained leaning to the pillar. Her heart was pounding heavily in her chest.
Time passed and spring was on its way, but Mai couldn’t keep herself from remembering that winter day, when she saw Ozai outside the Throne room. It was almost a tradition of seeing the Fire Lord distant and above everyone else. But that day he was close, closer than she had ever seen him.
Yes, he kissed her, he pressed his body to hers, but she was there, in the Throne room and he was His Royal self. But in the courtyard, he was a powerful man with a troublesome teenage daughter, who wanted too much for herself. And she saw his face in the daylight.
Every night she went to sleep, she thought about his face. All those moments he bit her lips and slid his tongue into her mouth, she never noticed him. The man in that room was the Fire Lord, the Master she obeyed. He was a figure, an icon of the proud Fire Nation.
But Ozai wasn’t even that old. His face was of a beautiful pale peach color, the skin looked smooth to the touch. His hair was a long, shiny black wave of the dark color that seemed to be deep and alive, like a river, its secrets trembling under the folds. And he was taller than she supposed.
That face came back to her in dreams. She would sleep and see herself sitting with Zuko, touching his face, letting her fingers slip through the soft hair, but when he turned around, it was Ozai she sat by. And every time he didn’t have eyes. She tried to clearly think of his eyes what they looked like in the light of the day, but failed, because before she looked him directly in the eyes, she hid behind the pillar. Because she was afraid of being mesmerized, and maybe because she was afraid he’ll see her looking. Every night she woke up to feel the soft warm bed under her head, not the cold marble, hiding her from his eyes.
Mai had already noticed that all the exciting news came to their house at night. So as the idyllic silence of the evening was broken by a loud knock at the door, Mai stood up to go, sighing loudly about how bored she was. But it was a letter for her Father. The noise woke up little Tom Tom, and Mother hurried into the little heir’s room, shushing and picking up the stuffed little toys he liked. Meanwhile, the teen sat back down, playing with her blade under the table.
She could have predicted anything but this. Apparently, since their Royal Majesties and Highnesses had already forgotten about her existence. She had to admit that being used was pathetic, and boring. Well after all there’s always time to decide which one was worse for her.
- Mai, you have to read this! – Father smiled and passed her the parchment.
It was a royal decree, stating that with the newly conquered city Omashu of the Earth Kingdom, a loyal servant must have been appointed royal Governor and placed as a figure of power of the Fire Nation.
As if the naval defeat hadn’t happened…. Mai frowned at the news: so Azula was right after all. And her own Father had been appointed Governor of Omashu by Fire Lord Ozai.
- Isn’t it great, Mai? Our family has gained a very high position in society!!! I think you will like traveling, and just think about the bigger house and space. It will be beneficial for your little brother! – Father had started walking around the room, unable to keep down his excitement. But Mai stood up, exclaiming:
- I’m not going! – She closed her fist around the blade, feeling it’s sharpness pressing against the skin. – I’m sure I’m needed at the Palace.
- But, Mai, - the man stopped smiling and blinked at his daughter. – It says that our family is to be fully escorted to Omashu. It doesn’t say anything about you.
He frowned, straightening his back and looking down at her:
- I really don’t understand your disappointment. We are granted such an opportunity. And you should be grateful. You must obey the order. We all must obey our Fire Lord.
- Yeah, whatever, - she sighed again, looking away. How could Father not have seen what it really meant? It was exile, pure banishment from the Fire Nation, masqueraded as advancement in the hierarchy. – May I go to bed, Father? I am really tired.
- Yes. Of course, Mai. I’ll tell the news to your Mother myself. Oh, she’ll be very happy to hear it!!! – And with a warm smile he nodded his head and left the living room.
Mai walked to her bed and sat down. On one hand leaving Fire Nation meant being away from the royal family, but on the other it promised to be boring. She laid down, putting her hands behind her head. She tried to remember the amber eyes of the Fire Lord. At least she supposed they were amber, like Zuko’s. She winced at the memory, as if it caused her physical pain. But it wasn’t the issue. It’s just that Zuko’s eyes were golden. She rolled on her side and pressed her eyelids together, making herself forget him. With every day passing he seemed to distance farther, soon he would turn into a ghost, and then into a cloud, something she knew she once have known, and then into a nonexistent unimportant event she wouldn’t even recall.
Mai knew that there would eventually be a call from the palace for her presence. Parents, as usual, ignored her regular visits, which became quite easy to do when Tom Tom was born. It was so funny how a heir changed the parents. They surrounded him with love and allowed anything he wanted. Compared to the way she was brought up, the little boy was treated as a Prince. She didn’t envy him, actually she was glad they didn’t pay attention to her, as long as she was free to do whatever she wanted.
The call came closer to night time. Parents were singing the little heir to sleep and as soon as Mai heard the soldier coming, she opened the door and left without saying goodnight. Of course, it was rude and disrespectful, but they wouldn’t really care, as long as the little bag of baby poop and drool was asleep and happy. She smiled, thanking their family wasn’t granted another girl. She would never have accepted a sister.
Very soon she was delivered to the front doors of the Palace. She walked towards the Throne room, but suddenly a voice came out of the dark:
- Hello there, Mai! – it was Azula. Princess was wearing a red robe over her blood-scarlet nightgown. – Couldn’t sleep well. I’m too excited.
- I suppose you were finally granted your wish.
- You guess everything all too soon. It really begins to get annoying. I got a small task, but I suppose I’ll be able to manage to get some things done on my way there.
- I’m sorry, I have bothered you, Azula. But you will soon be freed from my presence. – she bowed to her peer.
- Oh, you’re assigned to Omashu. I’m glad we both got what we wanted.
- Yeah. So am I. – and Mai looked to the side.
They exchanged a couple of polite phrases and each went their way.
- Good luck in there. – whispered Azula in farewell, winking at the taller girl, her amber eyes glowing in the dark.
Mai just stood there, waiting for the footsteps to quiet down. Then she took a step towards the curtain, inhaling deeply. Then another step, checking her weapons. This was ridiculous, but despite her bravado she was scared every time she went inside.
As the curtain fell behind her, she walked steadily to the front of the room, concentrating on breathing and holding the weapons close. But in the midway of her path, the voice of Ozai commanded:
- Disarm, - it was just one word, but she felt as if all the wind was knocked out of her. She looked up at the figure behind the flames and stood there, squeezing her fists.
- It is better you just obey.
Mai shivered and slowly untied the leather bands that kept her system together. First came off the stilettos, then blades, knives. Then the weapons attached to her legs followed. And after a second of hesitation, she took off her fingerless gloves. It wasn’t a weapon, but she took them off. After all she couldn’t have felt any more vulnerable.
- Come up here, - followed his voice. And she did as she was told.
He sat there following her every move. But she kept her head down, afraid of looking him in the eye: it turned into some obsession – the color of his eyes. She was there in the courtyard, when he told off his daughter, she saw him being someone else, and she heard him say she was… she heard him saying nothing.
The girl came up to stand before him and sat down in a deep bow. Her knees together under her chin, hands folded before her head.
Ozai watched as once again she began her uncomfortable shifting. Every single time he used every opportunity to make her feel uncomfortable. But as it turned out everyone’s beloved Fire Lord had quite a short temper. As he grew more familiar with her, he couldn’t keep himself far, and the time of her discomfort grew smaller.
This one was no different. Soon he put his hand under her chin and pulled up. She kept her eyes down, breathing in his scent. It was pleasant and masculine. Could Fire Lords have a scent of power? Could she feel it from Azula?
- What are you thinking about, girl? Look at me.
- Power. Does it have a scent? – she raised her eyes. And felt like the wind was kicked out of her again, like an earthbender hitting a rock right into her solar plexus. His eyes were pure gold.
- Yes, if you wonder, - he bent down and touched her lips. – It smells like sin, like lust.
And he kissed her hard, biting at the thin skin and licking the tiny drops of blood that came out. She shivered, clinging to the front of his robe. He tasted her mouth and then moved on to her neck, but she interrupted him.
- I’m leaving the Fire Nation.
- I know, - he raised his head and looked at her. – I will miss you, but duty calls. I feel you will be of service to the Fire Nation in the future.
And he kissed her again. This time though she didn’t have to play along, so she tried to free herself. But he was stronger, and pinned her down to the floor. She tried to kick him, but Ozai stopped her attempts by sitting on her knees. He smiled, keeping her on the floor.
- I can not let you dishonor me!!! – Mai tried to break free, reaching her nails at the hand that kept her restrained. At moments like these, she wished she had the patience and will to grow long and dangerous nails, like Azula’s. Too bad she couldn’t stand their length.
- Who says I’m going to dishonor you. Any girl would be happy to be of service to her Fire Lord, - he gave her a cocky smile. But was stopped, when the teen spit at him. He opened his mouth in surprise.
- Any whore, not me. I am above that. Now release me immediately!!! – she continued trying to free herself. But halted, when she saw his face and the anger that was building up. Suddenly she felt his hands burning, heating up the wrists of her hands. – Stop!
- You want me to get mad, don’t you? – and he used the moment of her pain to take both of the girls wrists into his hand. Fortunately, she was pretty thin and fit perfectly into his tight grip. – Now, you’ll suffer the consequences.
- What? You’re gonna kill me? – she breathed out through the pain of boiling flesh.
- No. But you’ll scream my name, - and he lunged to her mouth, biting at it. Like an animal, he was fierce and passionate. She tried to get away from him, but felt his hand. It was sliding down. Down under the belt of her pants and in through the body bindings. Her eyes widened and she jerked away from the touch, but he held her too tightly. She bit hard at his lip, feeling his blood dripping on her pale face, but he seemed to ignore her.
She tried moving her legs, but it was useless. Ozai just laughed at her powerless state:
- Actually if you move a bit, it’ll be easier to get to you, - he smiled at her, as she felt his finger reaching her core. She breathed in through her teeth, trying to press her legs together, hoping something would stop him.
- Or you can do this. But it doesn’t matter, I can reach you… - and he pressed down a bit.
Mai’s figure jerked again, but this time something else seemed to pull her up. When he touched her, the teen felt disgusted, but whenever he brushed some point, a pleasant spasm run through her body.
- I knew you’d like it, - he lowered his lips and kissed her gently.
Mai tried to ignore his probing finger, but couldn’t. She felt it again. Like the time before, he had managed to make her want him. But this time he wanted to speed things up. How pathetic. Yes, pathetic was much worse than being bored.
Ozai covered her lips with small kisses and then lowered to her neck, nuzzling at it with his nose. It just added up to the sensations, as she felt the folds in her private place moisten. It became easier for his finger to move around now. She relaxed her legs a bit, since being tense was not useful at all.
- You won’t let me go. No matter what? – she looked up at him, suppressing the small shivers that shook her.
- In other circumstances it would have sounded romantic. – he smiled, but then his face became serious again. – But, no. I will not let you go. You should understand that there is nothing bad about this. You are mine, and I can do as I wish. It is an order, and you should obey. Or, in your view, dying is a better option?
And he gave a soft pat to her clitoris. Mai arched her back.
- Nnnoo… - she breathed out, cursing her body for being so weak. – Nnaah.
- Yes, yes. Just relax and enjoy it, - and he released her hands, to give her breast a light squeeze. But she couldn’t fight him. Something was changing in her. As if something woke up inside and was taking control of her body. Something heavy was pulsing below, filling her with need. A hunger she never felt. She didn’t feel anything except for the body pressing her to the hard floor, his gentle lips and the finger that tortured her being.
- Relax, Mai. Do you feel it? It is the fire that always lives inside of you. And yes, you can bend it to your will. All it takes is just being… - he teased her entrance, tickling the nerve endings, but not entering her womanhood. – Patient. Can you do that?
- Please… - Mai breathed out. She rocked her hips, trying to catch the finger inside. But he refused to break her yet. – Please, I want to feel it inside.
- I told you that all it takes is patience. You are just too stubborn to learn, aren’t you?
- Please. Please… - she breathed out. The finger continued its torture, as she felt her breathing quickening and her muscles pulsing where it touched.
Ozai felt how her behavior changed, noting that she was almost close to the edge. And he rose up to look at her. The girl was clinging to his shoulders, trying to get some contact with him, rubbing her pelvis against the palm of his hand. Her eyes were half-lidded and her lips were trembling open, small quick breaths coming out of her mouth. And when he pressed just a bit too hard, she arched her back, her head pressing hard to the floor. She was close. She was almost there and he felt it:
- Now, Mai, be a good girl. Say my name when you come. I order you to repeat my name.
- Aaah… - she felt her whole world draining somewhere and she was left alone in a whirlwind of ecstasy and oblivion. The only things she saw was a pair of golden eyes that looked down at her, at their property. – Ozai.
- Louder!
- Ozai. OZAI! OZAI!!! Ozaiozaiozaiozaiozai… – her whole body convulsed as she clung to him, feeling his heart pounding in his chest. – Ozai… ozai… o…zai… o…
And it was over. She fell down, powerless and drained. Her eyes were closed and she kept saying her Fire Lord’s name.
- This is the scent of power, Mai, - and Ozai pressed his finger to her lips. She instinctively opened her mouth, licking at him. The taste was new, warm and not unpleasant. After a moment she understood that it was her she just tasted, a blush burned up on her cheeks.
- There is nothing to be ashamed of, Mai. It’s just that you’ll be leaving Fire Nation and I’ll miss you. And I want you to miss me too. This is power, Mai: now I have power over you, because you will always remember the name of the man you screamed during your first orgasm.
And he stood up and left the Throne room. Mai lay on the floor. Her body felt strange to her. And she felt powerless. So the only thing she could do was turn to her side and curl into a small ball, hugging her knees. She couldn’t cry.
Mai lay on the cold floor, feeling her own smell all over. The scent of power was turning into a filthy stink.
