Disclaimer: I do not own Avatar: The Last Airbender, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
It may seem like the chapters are coming in fast and at weird intervals. It's just that I already had them written, but I am now taking the time to edit and look them over in what little free time I have in between classes, homework and studying for finals. Enjoy. I'll get the rest up a little later.
Chapter 4
Prince Zuko pulled his cloak tighter around his body as he walked through the small village. He had been walking around the small island for hours trying to find any signs of the Avatar, but had turned up with nothing.
‘Damn it, there’s nothing on this backwater island.’
Zuko growled and continued to stalk through the village cursing under his breath. Just then his Uncle, who wore a similar cloak as Zuko walked over holding a bag.
“Nephew isn’t it great. They have my favorite tea. I’ve needed to buy some more.”
“Uncle, I don’t care about the tea. We have to find the Avatar…”
Zuko suddenly fell silent and he quickly dragged Iroh behind a stand. The older man was about to ask what was wrong, but Zuko held up a hand and indicated for him to come closer. Iroh did and looked from behind the stand to see Admiral Zhao walking through the village with two bodyguards behind him.
“Zhao, what the hell is he doing here?” asked Zuko glaring.
“Lord Ozai must have sent him here. He receives direct orders from him,” replied Iroh.
“Then he must know something about the Avatar then,” growled Zuko.
“Nephew, you aren’t going to confront Zhao are you? Nobody must know we are here.”
“No, I will not fight Zhao now. I will not put you or my crew in that type of danger.”
Iroh sighed in relief and said, “We should leave before Zhao sees us. I think we can get away this way, Zuko.”
Iroh turned around expecting to see the younger male behind him, but the spot where Zuko had been standing was now empty. The ex-general looked around in confusion until he spotted a familiar figure moving through the streets towards the dock.
He sighed in irritation and muttered, “That boy is going to be the death of me someday.”
Zuko walked slowly along the pier trying not to draw any attention to himself as he searched for Zhao’s ship among the several docked boats. Just then he spotted several firebenders lurking around a pile of boxes and he quickly moved into the shadows before he was seen. He peered out from behind the boxes and scowled as he realized that sneaking onto the ship was going to be a lot harder then he had planned. He gazed at the boat looking for possible entry points and exits. With the amount of guards roaming the docks he would have to sneak his way on board; too many to take on by himself.
Just then a young firebender approached where Zuko was hiding and the young prince suddenly had an idea. He quietly followed the lone firebender further down the dock away from others milling around the boxes. When he felt they were a good distance away from prying eyes he spotted a piece of wood laying on the ground and quickly picked it up. With a forceful swing he hit the guard on the head with the piece of wood knocking him unconscious. Zuko quickly dragged the lifeless body behind the boxes, stripping off their uniform before putting it on. He then ripped a strip from his cloak and tied it over his left eye to hide the scar. Zuko peered around the boxes and saw that the guard’s attention was still preoccupied.
He stepped out from behind the boxes and carefully made his way over to Zhao’s ship. As he approached the crowd of firebenders he lowered his head and quickened his pace so as not to draw any attention to himself. He reached the ramp leading up to the deck of the ship and was about to ascend it when he heard a voice call out to him.
“Hey kid, where you going?”
Zuko froze and said, “I’m going to check on the cargo.”
“Well when your done bring down some more sake. We’re all thirsty over here.”
“Yes,” replied Zuko before walking up onto the ship muttering, “Uncultured heathens.”
Once on the ship, Zuko looked around and noticed that a few firebenders were still lingering on board. He stealthily moved to the cabin door, which lead to the depths of the boat, and entered. Once inside he quickly made his way down the hall exploring all the rooms for information on the Avatar.
After ten minutes of fruitless searching, Zuko let out an angry growl slamming his fist against the wall as smoke flowed from his nostrils and said, “Dammit, there’s nothing here.”
Just then a door he hadn’t noticed before caught his attention and he slowly walked over to it. It was a plain looking door which shouldn’t have caused much suspicion. He touched the door and was surprised when it swung up causing light to flood the dim hallway. He shielded his eyes from the bright light and stepped into the room. When his eyes adjusted to the light he immediately spotted a bed in the corner of the room with a naked figure lying tied to it. He approached the bed and his eyes narrowed when he saw that the body was a boy and he was bruised and bloody.
He shook the boy’s shoulder and demanded, “Hey, wake up. Are you okay?”
The boy turned over revealing familiar blue eyes, but instead of the fierce determination and passion those eyes once held, they were now blank and lifeless; as if his very soul had been sucked from him.
“It’s you,” whispered Zuko. “You’re the boy that follows the Avatar. Where’s the Avatar? Tell me where he is?”
There was no reply from the boy, who just stared up at him with those same lifeless eyes. Just then he heard a faint sound coming from outside and he cursed as he looked towards the door. He didn’t have much time and the boy wasn’t responding.
He looked back at the boy on the bed and cursed quietly before taking one of the many blankets bunched up at the end of the bed and wrapping it around the unmoving body. He picked up the boy and slung him over his shoulder never noticing the small pendant his mother gave him, snap and fall to the floor.
Zuko spotted the window at the other end of the room and went over to it opening the hatch. He peered outside noticing that he was facing the ocean. He looked up and saw a lifeboat hanging overhead and he shot fire at the ropes snapping them. He quickly pulled away from the window as the boat fell pass the window and into the water with a splash. He looked at the door just as the sound of footsteps approached the room. Holding the body tightly in his hands he jumped out the window landing in the boat with a dull thud. He placed the body on the floor before glancing up at the window. Zuko grabbed the oars and began rowing away from the ship heading back to shore.
Zhao returned to the ship a predatory smile on his face. After one night with the Water Tribe boy he had been anticipating the next encounter with the delectable boy. Zhao arrived at his private room and opened the door entering into his personal quarters. His eyes immediately fell onto his bed expecting to see the boy sprawled out on top of the sheets. When he saw that the bed was empty he let out a loud yell causing the torches in his room to explode in fire and smoke. In a fit or rage he began to trash the room throwing the covers to the floor upturning the tables and chairs and throwing small fire balls at the walls. As he stalked through the room in anger his eyes caught a glint of gold lying on the floor. He slowly went over and picked it up examining it carefully as a malicious smile spread across his face.
“Well, what do we have here? It seems the young prince has decided to turn thief and raid my personal things.”
He clutched the pendant in his hand and stalked out of the wrecked room barking orders to the crew members as he headed up onto the deck.
Zuko reached his ship clutching the body to his chest. He immediately spotted his uncle standing by the railing and rushed over to him. Iroh noticed his nephew coming towards him and let out a sigh of relief.
“Zuko, there you are. I was beginning to worry.”
“There’s no time. We must set sail immediately.”
Just then the old firebender noticed the bundle in Zuko’s hands and asked, “What’s going on, Zuko? What’s that in your hands?”
“I will explain later, but we have to leave port NOW! Give the orders.”
Before Iroh could protest Zuko walked away towards his quarters leaving his uncle to stare at him in confusion and curiosity.
“That boy will be the death of me.”
