What!? You did what!?" Yumi screamed in the courtyard before school.
Ulrich mumbled something.
"No, it's not okay! Don't you get it? It'll never be okay!" Yumi replied.
She started to pace back and forth, "How could you, Ulrich? And Odd... I thought he was my friend. OUR friend! Ugh..."
"Look, we were just playing around. It was just for fun, okay?" said Ulrich calmly, trying to reason with her.
She gritted her teeth, leaning in so that her lips were near Ulrich's ear, "There's a BIG difference between playing around and SCREWING around!" she said in a hushed growl.
"Yumi, can't we just..?" Ulrich attempted.
"No, we can't!" Yumi snapped right back. She sighed and shook her head, "J-just don't try to talk to me right now. I can't think straight... I need time. Lots and lots of time. You'll know when I'm ready..." she said as she strode past him, crossing the courtyard and entered the school.
"So, how did she take it?" Odd asked as he rolled around.
Ulrich groaned.
"I see," Odd replied.
"Well, some good came out of it," Ulrich added, "At least you enjoyed being my bitch."
"WHAT did you just say?" Odd shrieked, his eyes burning as he looked up at Ulrich.
The older boy looked downright scared from this response.
"Well, I was just..." Ulrich tried to say.
"No!" Odd said as he took a step back.
Ulrich reached out, "I'm sorry..." trying to place a hand on Odd's shoulder.
"No!" Odd said again as he took another step back, "You're sorry because you pissed me off, but you have no idea why. I thought you were my friend. I thought," he said, looking away from Ulrich, "you had feelings for me."
Odd sighed. "How could have I been so stupid!?" he said as he wiped his eyes and ran towards the school.
Ulrich was left by himself, unable to believe his luck. "It was a just a kiss..." he mumbled.
It started Saturday night at a party. Apparently, some alcohol was involved in a game of Truth Or Dare. Ulrich was there, and so were Odd and Jeremy. Ulrich was dared to kiss Odd, and so he did. And then he started to take off his own shirt, and then Odd's. And then the girls started to pour champagne on both of them, while the two of them were making out, while the girls cheered them on. Yeah, it was a good time. But, you know how it goes. Some news spreads like wildfire. True, it started with just a kiss. But through a series of unfortunate events, Ulrich had unwittingly complicated the whole situation.
That (Monday) night, Yumi heard a noise from her window. At first, she thought it was nothing, but then she heard it again--as if someone had thrown a pebble at her window. She looked out and saw Aelita standing in the backyard.
"Aelita!" Yumi called out, "What are you doing here?"
"Shh... keep it down. You don't want to wake your parents up, do you?" Aelita said softly.
"Okay," Yumi replied in a hushed voice. In the silence of the night, it wasn't hard for Aelita to hear, "What's up?"
"Um... sushi," Aelita replied, "Would you like some sushi?"
"Err..." Yumi answered, "Okay, hang on. I'll be right out."
A few minutes later, Yumi and Aelita were walking towards downtown.
"But this late at night?" Yumi asked with a giggle.
"It's really good sushi..." Aelita said with a smile
A short while later, they had arrived at the hip and trendy 24-hour sushi bar. The girls were offered menus, which they both grabbed and started to look through them.
"So then, why did you really want to see me this late at night?" Yumi asked. She looked up at the waiter, "I'll have a 6-piece salmon Hosomaki."
"I don't know," Aelita said with a shrug. She looked up at the waiter, "I'll have what she's having." She then looked back at Yumi, "I thought you might have wanted to talk."
"About what?" Yumi asked, raising an eyebrow.
Aelita shrugged again, "I don't know. What's on your mind?"
Yumi smeared some wasabi on a roll with her chopsticks. "You know as well as I do that I have a hard time expressing myself."
"I know," Aelita replied with a nod, picking up a piece with her chopticks.
Yumi chewed on her piece before gulping, "I mean, it's not like I deliberately try to hide my feelings. It's just that it's hard for me to articulate... you know, translate into words what I'm feeling."
Aelita waited to chew her piece, and swallowed before answering, "I know, Yumi. You don't have to say anything, if you don't want to. How's the sushi?"
Yumi laughed. "Yes, it really is that good. I think it's worth getting up in the middle of the night for." She then sighed, "I don't know, I just..." She bit her lower lip and looked away from Aelita, not letting her see that she was crying.
She picked up a paper napkin and covered her eyes with it, sniffling. "I feel hurt, and betrayed. But I really can't understand why... He said it was just fun, but it's killing me. I don't know why!" By now, she had started to sob.
"And a part of me feels like I should have been a little more vocal earlier on. I should have said to him how I feel, you know? So I also feel like it's partly my fault. I also feel horrible for hating Odd. He's our friend, you know. That should never change."
Aelita gently grasped Yumi's shoulder. "It's never too late, you know. Tell him."
Yumi nodded, wiping her tears. "I know. But it's hard for me. Maybe I'm just afraid that he won't reciprocate my feelings. But every time I work up the courage, he goes and does something stupid. And then I'm not sure how I feel about him."
"Just give it time, then. It'll be okay," Aelita said with a smile. "You're right. We're friends; no matter what happens, nothing should change that."
The pink haired girl then picked up a piece with her chopsticks and raised it to the raven-haired Asian girl's. Yumi blushed--she didn't understand why--but she parted her lips and grasped the roll with her teeth, and started to chew on it. She then picked up a piece also, and offered it to Aelita in a similar manner.
She didn't understand why, but her heart was starting to race. She wanted to wrap her arms around Aelita, and run her fingers through her hair. She didn't know why, but the thought gave her a warm feeling.
"Aelita?"
"Yes, Yumi?"
"Do you want to spend the night with me?"
"Sure."
Yumi couldn't believe her luck.
