Chapter IV
Sokka held Toph in his arms as the carriage bumped along the uneven road. She only sobbed occasionally when she thought of Katara being hurt or worse. Those were the times when his grip would tighten as if he knew what she was thinking. “Are you okay Toph?” “Yes” She needed his strength and laying here on his chest provided that and more. She felt his hands rubbing her back lulling her to sleep. “I’ll get us out of this Toph and we will find Katara.”
Aang groaned and then opened his eyes. He sat up and with his hands bound behind his back and his leg tied together. He remembered the blast but nothing after that was clear. He looked around at his surroundings and saw two of his companions. “Where are we going?”
“We don’t know but I think it is to the Earth kingdom.” Aang inched his way towards them. “Where is Katara?” “She fell from the cliff Aang.” Aang lowered his head that was when he saw the bandages on Toph’s hands. Anger came over him quicker than it had done in the past. He had no control over it. It was as if something else was controlling him. His body began filling with terrifying power. The carriage began to rattle. “What is going on back there?” The tall woman asked her shorter companion. “I’ll check it out.” She grabbed a blow dart tube and opened the door to the compartment holding their prisoners. The taller woman saw her companion fly over the beast pulling the carriage and pulled hard on the reigns to stop. She immediately pulled out her blade and went to the door, the dart slammed into her neck, and she joined her companion on the hard ground. Sokka put down the tube and broke the lock on the back door to the carriage. He walked back to Toph hunched over and helped her out. She could feel the sunlight fading as Sokka lifted her down from the carriage. Her feet touched ground and Toph smiled. Sokka went back into the carriage to help Aang down. “Sokka” “Aghhh, I need …a minute Toph.” “You do not have a minute, Sokka of the Water tribe.”There had to be an army of Earth benders standing there surrounding them. Sokka held Aang over his shoulder. The tall, green-eyed leader of the army came towards Toph and smiled down at the blind woman holding her injured hands to her chest. “You would not want any further damage to happen to her now would you Sokka; release the Avatar.”
Two of his men came towards them and Sokka set Aang’s feet on the ground. “I am Captain Jebo and you two are my prisoner. I will release you from your bindings if you promise you will not try to escape.” Jebo’s hand touched Toph’s face and she turned away. They knew his implied meaning when he looked at them and then back at Toph. “We will not try to escape.” Aang said glaring at the Earth bender. Jebo smiled and Aang’s bonds fell from his body from a sharp blade of rock springing from the ground. Aang rubbed his wrists still staring at the Captain. “We are honored to have you here Avatar.” The Captain and his men bowed. “You do not show it by kidnapping me and my friends and causing another to be lost. Aang’s body showed anger as he moved towards the earthbenders. The army cautiously moved back knowing that even if they had his friend he could still hurt them.Jebo pulled Toph closer to his body seeing the strength of his men fade somewhat. “I apologize for our methods of getting your attention but I assure you all of my means are for a good cause.”
Jebo gave Toph to one of his men as he approached the Avatar. “I need you to do something for me but first I will do something for you.” A simple wave of his hand brought over the two women that captured the Avatar on a slab of rock. “Who told you to crush her hands?”The shorter woman screamed as the rock above them came crashing down upon their bodies. Toph heard the breaking of bone and felt the blood splatter on her feet.
“What do you want from us?”
Jebo looked at the young warrior that had fire in his eyes. He was soft for the earth woman in his care. “I want you to steal the Specter of Rin for me.” Sokka face showed disbelief. “That is a sacred Northern Water tribe relic used to kill evil spirits there is no way that they will give it to us for any reason.” “How you get it does not matter to me but it matters to her.” Jebo smiled when he saw the defeat come over their faces. “You will have two days to return with the Specter.” “Two days, we will never make it there in two days!” “On foot maybe not but by air you will.” Several of Jebo’s army went into a stance and thrust their arms forward, Appa came towards Aang, and Sokka encased in rock. “You will bring me the Scepter and I will watch your friend to make sure no harm comes to her.” Jebo waved his hand and Toph came towards him on a slab of rock. He smiled at his two captives wanting to harm him. Jebo opened his made a fist and then pulled it back towards his body and Appa was free. “You better hurry they are stronger during a full moon.”~~~~~~~~~~
What was he doing lying next her staring at her as she slept? What had his Uncle said to her while he bathed? He asked him to leave once before but Katara wanted him to stay. He heard her laughter from the other room as he bathed and all sorts of unimaginable things ran through his mind. What was he saying to her? She slept as if there was no danger he could not defeat to save her. Did she know he was her greatest danger? He would not hesitate in using her against the Avatar. He would leave her at the first sign that her usefulness was over. He wondered if his Uncle told her that and she did not believe him. Why would she laugh? Iroh was not amusing to anyone but himself. Her memory would return and she would try to kill him. He should strike the first blow and be done with her.
She made a small moan and moved as if she would wake he closed his eyes as hers opened.
Katara stared at the face of her husband with confusion. Uncle said he was a man with a light disposition. She wondered if Zuko had a twin, because even in sleep he looked cold and uncaring. Maybe she got the wrong one and this brother betrayed the one she wanted.
He did not like Iroh talking to her for some reason she could not fathom. At least he told her what he was like, even if she could not see it. Iroh said her injury hurt him more than he would tell her. She was not sure about that; it looked as if she annoyed him as much as Iroh. Katara studied his face, her thoughts went to his soft, and warm touch on her face. He was very warm to the touch. She remembered his gentleness and protectiveness. Maybe he was incapable of showing his true self when others were around. Something close to dread ran through her body as the thought of not remembering anything of their past. What did she see in him that made her want to marry him? Katara’s gaze moved toward the scar on his face and her mind ran rampant with the reason for it. How did he get that scar? Did she do that to him? Was he unfaithful? Was she unfaithful and he paid the price for it? Katara sighed at her thoughts and rolled her eyes. What was she thinking? What man would fight a band of pirates for her if either of them were unfaithful? If he just talked to her without the annoyance, maybe she would not have these thoughts. She wondered if it was as smooth as it looked. She probably had touched it many times what was one more. Katara slowly pulled her hand from under the light blanket and reached out to touch the scar and his hand grabbed her wrist. She gasped.“How do you expect me to sleep if you keep touching me?” His voice was short and full of ice.
“Touching you? I have not touched you at all and your action towards me makes me wonder if I made a mistake about our marriage.”Was she questioning his appeal? Many women had tried to snare him but none succeeded. Who was she to doubt that he could have her? His grip tightened on her wrist when she tried to pull her hand back. Her eyes were not as dazzling as before. He recognized the anger within them because it was also within his own.
“You married me for better or worse.” His lips barely moved as he barked the words at her. “What part are we in? Is this the best?” Her eyes were no longer blue. All the words Iroh spoke about this man were lies. Maybe he pushed her down the mountain and there were witnesses to his crime. It was possible that she was trying to escape him and the beating was his retribution for her actions. She felt the bed shift as she tried to move to the other end of the bed. His hard body came over hers stopping her retreat. Fearful eyes stared up at her husband as he looked down at her. He released her wrist and slammed his lips over hers.
She did not fight him as his lips began to lessen their hardness. Her body began to soften. She felt as if she would burn as his body began to heat up. It amazed her that her body began to cool against him. Her arms slid around his neck as his hands moved towards her waist. Maybe this was why she wanted him. His lips tore away from hers and he pulled her hands away. He looked startled by something and moved away from her. Katara looked at him as he frowned at her. He thought this was her fault. “You need to rest.” “That was not my fault.” He watched her touch her lips. He knew he hurt her because of the cry he smothered. Zuko continued to frown as she turned away from him. His shoulders slumped and he gently placed his hand on the curve of her hip. “I’m …sorry I hurt you.” She did not respond to his words and anger welled in his body. Zuko turned away from her and slammed his head down on his pillow. He stared out the window and into the night. He was use to never receiving forgiveness this was nothing new. He would survive this as he had all the other times. A touch that he could only describe as the sweetest coolness he would ever feel in his life move over his waist and up his chest to stop at his heart. Her fingers fanned out over his chest. Her body pressed close to him. His eyes closed as the feel of her cheek and breath on his back cause the fire inside of him to blaze. She said nothing and just held him. She could think of nothing to say. He was her husband, she would make this work, and she would make him better. He had to be better she loved him.
