"Who’s the new kid?"
"Is that Zim?"
"He’s got green-ish skin… but it can’t be him."
"Oh my gosh he’s looking over here!"
"I think he just smiled!"
"I think there's a word for him..."
"Heck yeah, he's hot!"
Zim shivered in triumph as the words washed over him. His eyes, disguised with the same contacts he usually wore, refused to look at the humans who whispered behind shielded hands. With his sensitive, reptilian like ears, he could hear the humans when they didn’t want to be heard.
But if the humans didn’t want to be heard…. Why were they speaking so loudly? It was almost as if they were trying to get him to hear… to make him notice them. He also noticed that some of them had strange coloration on their skin… a sort of pinkish red tinge that appeared around their cheeks when they looked at him. He made a mental note to see if it was a disease he should be worried about catching.
Soft black hair falling down his back in messy waves, he went to his seat, not even glancing at The Dib. He wanted to see what the human’s reaction would be… but that would wait…. Wait until the right moment. He wouldn’t appear as eager as he felt.
He would imitate a human animal that he had much admired. A feline…. In short, a housecat. He had seen these creatures on more than one occasion, one of the most memorable times being when he had become depressed over the Dib’s lack of attention and had mistaken a cat for him. He realized that the ebony haired human, and the felines he so admired, were similar in some ways. Both slinked around, unseen, unheard, shadowing after their prey. Whether a cat after a mouse, or the human after…. Him. Yes. Both beings seemed to enjoy toying with their prey. There had been numerable circumstances when all had seemed lost, and Zim had only just managed to get away because the Dib had spent time gloating about his to-be victory.
Yes, he would take the traits. The calm, almost lazy attitude. The way they could hide their feelings, making others come to them instead of the other way around. He would take these qualities and use them to his advantage.
Class begun and he leaned back, using his balance, perfected at the Irken Academy, to balance on the back two legs of his chair. He also used his feet to help his balance, resting them on the desk in front of him.. Behind him he could almost feel the other’s talking about him, praising him with voices shrouded with non-belief. He allowed himself the ghost of a self-satisfied smirk and settled back to wait.
Lunch.
Instead of going over to his solitary table, he stopped Zita in the hallway.
He had positioned himself perfectly… waiting… like a spider, waiting for it’s prey to wander unknowingly into it’s web. He leaned against the wall, his eyes on her as she walked nearer, needing to pass him in order to get to the lunch room. She tried to meet his gaze, but his intense eyes bore into hers until she had to lower them.
“Hello Zita.” He said carefully, choosing his words, and trying hard not to let his Irken slang show. “Would you find it… er… mind if I sit with you today?”
Zita nodded, her eyes widening, though never leaving the floor as she stuttered a bit.
“Ok Zim…. Sure, sure I’ll save you a seat.” Eyes still lowered, a slight blush on her cheeks, she scampered off, leaving Zim cocky, but extremely confused. What was going on with all the change in skin tones today? He had noticed it before, but never paid much attention to it before then. He knew that sometimes, when other animal’s were being heated to eat, they would turn different colors. Had her temperature risen? He also knew that human’s blood was red, just like his own. Perhaps for some reason the blood had gone to her face… but why?
He sighed and shook his head. It was going to be awhile before he understood the strange ways of the humans.
Walking into the lunch room, he didn’t have to look for The Dib. He knew he would be there, sitting with his sister as usual, no doubt glaring at him from across the room. Still….. He couldn’t resist taking a peek at the human’s reaction. Just the smallest of glances to reassure himself. To give him a thrill. He looked over…. And fire filled his blood.
THE DIB WAS IGNORING HIM!!!
Well he would stop that…. Once he had gotten the entire school against him. A fairly simple battle strategy. Get your allies to hate you, and you will fall. It had never failed before so why should it now? Narrowing his eyes at his enemy he glares. ‘Dammit Dib-filth…. If no one else… I will get YOU to notice me…. Through whatever means necessary.’
He yanks his gaze away from the human and looks over to the popular kid’s table. Sure enough, Zita had a seat saved by her. Zim swaggered over and sat down, putting his lunch on the table…. His PACKED lunch on the table. Keeping his eyes on his lunch, he watched the rest of them from the corners of his vision. The way they talked…. The lingo they used…. The way they sat slouched, as if they didn’t care about anything. Slowly he began to understand…. Being ‘cool’ and fitting in among humans was not so different from fitting in with Irkens. You had to not care about anything. You had to go with the flow, not try to change the way things were.
Once he understood, he felt more confident. Perhaps humans weren’t as complicated as he thought they were. Reaching into his lunch bag, he pulled out a bag of Irken chips, cleverly disguised as Doritos. Idly he realized he must establish trust among his newfound….. Acquaintances. Grudgingly, he offered some of his chips to Zita. Zita happily took a big handful and began munching. She looked at Zim, her eyes slightly wide with surprise. “Hey… these are….pretty good. I don't think I've ever had them. What's the brand?”
That did it.
Instantly, everyone else wanted some of the strange new food. It took a lot of dodging questions to hide the fact that they were Irken food... but when everything was said and done, Zim didn’t have anymore chips… but he did have the attention and respect of the other kids.
He didn’t trust himself to talk too much. He didn’t want to mess up what he had already accomplished so he would stay silent… for now. This proved to be a good plan. Almost before he realized it, he had gained the 'mysterious' quality in everyone's minds.
Another point for Zim.
Walking back to class, he glared at everyone. They backed off. He was one of them now and he was respected and feared. He realized that they were afraid of him… but afraid of what? Of loosing the respect of their comrades? Of being alone?…. Yes. A fear for humans. Being alone. Helpless. He understood. It was strange to be alone… unwanted… and he could use it against them.
The Dib.
He would make him pay. Make him fear, make him crave company until he cracked. He would take everything away. Oh yes… the Dib would pay. First he needed to turn the school against him…. No…. he needed them to ignore him completely. He knew that even hate was better than nothing at all.
How would he convince them though? He would have to gather more information. More about The Dib…. Humans called it ‘getting the dirt’. A saying that Zim actually agreed with. Dirt was a filthy thing that carried germs. He hated everything about it, and so did everyone else. When they got it on them they washed it off. ‘Getting the dirt’ on someone meant digging up everything about them. Their secrets. Their precious private life. Exposing things about them, changing their image so that it was dirty.
Like looking at a picture of a good-looking being. You think that they are as perfect as they look. Then you learn that in fifth grade they still wet the bed. The next time you look at the image, you realize it isn’t so great…. That they are just like you. And that’s what humans hate the most. Someone who is just like them.
In class he put a small smirk on his face, just enough to make the rest wonder. He knew what to do. Tomorrow he would tell everyone something that would make Dib go unnoticed…. Ignored. He just had to make sure to word it right….
Back at the base his disguise was off. He was watching another movie. This one had a lot of ‘kissing’ in it. Obviously the main characters didn’t like each other very much. After awhile he turned it off, tired of it. He wasn’t just tired of the movie. Being popular was tiring. Planning what to say tomorrow was tiring. He wanted to rest and relax a little.
He was… Uneasy. He had never put so much at stake for a plan. If it failed and he became unpopular again, that was it. The humans would remember and would never look at him the same way. This was the first operation, and anything afterwards wouldn’t be as efficient. And to put more on his mind, The Dib was acting strange. He had tried a few times to get past the force field… but not as much as usual. Perhaps it was because he knew that Zim wouldn’t try to take over the world anytime soon, having nothing to gain from doing it… still…… he should have been trying harder… trying to turn him into Mysterious Mysteries or whatever the stupid show was that the human was always watching.
Suddenly he sat up with a jolt, sending Gir into a fit of crazed giggles on the couch beside him. What if he had gone back to ‘real science’?! He couldn’t let that happen… but he could only take care of one thing at a time. He reluctantly settled back down. He would break The Dib. It was simple to break humans, he had done it before in experiments. Fear. That was the key. And being alone was the key to fear. Combined, the keys unlocked the door to a human’s mind and once the door was open, it was just the matter of walking inside.
