Chapter Four,
The Hunt continues.
The corridor outside of Serpentor’s chambers was surrounded by guards listening against the door as they heard sounds of glass shattering within and the screaming cries of Serpentor. Most of the guards couldn’t help but to chuckle.
But what was happening within the chamber was even worse. The hunt for Serpentor’s bride was not going as planned. The lack of possible brides brought fury down upon those who were within the chamber.
“Where is she!” screamed Serpentor, throwing another glass towards Doctor Mindbender, who ducked in time to have it miss him.
“My lord, we have searched for her but we have not found the one for you,” Doctor Mindbender said, mentally pleading he would not throw something else at him.
Zarana moved from the wall where she was leaning against with her two brothers. “My Lord Serpentor, may I speak?”
Serpentor turned to glare at Zarana as she approached him. “Speak and speak quickly!”
“Why don’t we look to our enemies for a possible bride? Mindbender can wipe their memories or something like that and make them a member of Cobra,”
The room went quiet as everyone turned their gaze towards Serpentor who was silent. He was almost too quiet and it forebode ill for all as several members started to slip towards the door.
“STAY WHERE YOU ARE! THIS I COMMAND!” snapped Serpentor, as he turned towards them. He spoke once again but this time his voice quieter. “Yes, yes, this may be the best idea yet. Zarana, I want you to…”
The other members of Cobra watched and listened as Serpentor spoke to Zarana, who smiled wickedly before nodding to him and walked out of the room with all the guards rushing to get into their proper place before they got punished for listening in on what was spoken about inside.

It was a bright sunny morning, when Duke noticed the same colored van that the General and Joanna had came in was slowly pulling up to the gate. He smiled as he radioed Hawk to let him know that the General was here with Joanna. Duke started to dial Lady Jaye’s room number but changed it to Beach-head’s room.
“Yes!” the voice said over the phone.
“Beach, it’s Duke, you have escort duty today. Care to come down and meet who you are going to escort around the base?” asked Duke. He heard something said that made him laugh. “It’s an order. Now get down here in two minutes or your tail is going to be in the brig for couple of days.”
Duke watched as Joanna was wheeled out of the van when Beach-head finally made it to his side. “Hello Joanna. It’s good to see you again,”
“Hi Duke, hi Beach-head,” Joanna said, as she smiled at them both. Her smile lingered towards Beach-head the longest.
“Joanna, I’ll see you at lunch,” spoke General Brantley, as he walked away from them before even hearing her response.
“That’s rude of him,” Beach-head said. He noticed that they looked at him. “Well, he could have waited for an answer from you, Joanna.”
“Oh father knows my answer would be no I will not, we’re not on speaking terms today,” Joanna stated, turning to look at them.
“What caused that to happen?” asked Duke.
Joanna just shook her head as she turned away from Duke to watch a group of Joes jog past them.
Duke knew when he got the cold shoulder about that statement of hers, so he dropped it. “Beach-head is going to be your escort around base today, Joanna. I have to get back to my office and finish some papers.”
Joanna nodded and watched as he walked away. “He’s a good man, but my father is a different story all together.”
Beach-head wondered why she didn’t like her father. He shook his head and spoke, “So I guess we better get inside,”
Joanna nodded as they headed into the base. Beach-head led her to the recreation room where he peeked in before fully opening the door. He gave the excuse of trying to keep Bazooka from blabbing on about people in wheelchairs not being worth anything, when they are just like any other person just that they can’t run or walk like they can.
“I can walk Beach-head; I just do not trust my legs no more.” Joanna stated calmly and her voice was no more than a whisper.
They went to the couch where Beach-head wondered about the accident that caused her to be stuck in the wheelchair. He remembered how his friend felt once he learned what caused his accident. His friend Barry started to act like he was just another person when he watched him give a wheelchair a try for a day. Beach-head got him standing against him and he walked around campus with his friend tied to himself. Gave him the best memories of that day, he wondered if he was still alive and if he remembered that day.
“What got you smiling, Beach-head?”
“An old memory of my college friend Barry, he was wheelchair bound like you but his was permanent. I shared part of my day living in a wheelchair and gave him part of a day standing upright and walking as he was tied to my body and we went everywhere that he could not. It was a great day. I wonder if he’s alive or gone,” Beach-head said gently.
“Well, why don’t we find out if he’s alive or passed away?” asked Joanna, as she pulled out her laptop and plugged it in. It was not long till the page got filled up with information on him. “Maybe I should e-mail him and ask him what is his best memory was?”
“That would be good. I’ll owe you a favor for what you are doing for me,” Beach-head said. He knew the favor would be something along the line of helping her walk again. He wasn’t sure but something in him told him it was going to be that.
“That will be great. But we’ll keep that favor secret till it is over,” Joanna replied as she sent the e-mail to who she hoped was Beach-head’s friend from college.
“Maybe we can work on the favor now while we’re killing time?” Beach-head asked.
“Sure, I want to get my legs stronger so I can walk without needing a wheelchair or a walker. Once, I get my legs back, I’m going for the Olympics again, get my horses back and then after everything is over. I’ll come to base and be a full time Joe instead of one who is on the inactive list.” Joanna stated.
Beach-head looked at her and asked, “Do you want to learn how to walk again?”
“Yes, I do. But what about the others?” asked Joanna.
“They are busy for the day. Your father won’t give a damn about it,” said Beach-head, as he helped move her foot rests away from her legs so she could stand without tripping over them.
Joanna turned her head towards the recreation doors and then turned to look at Beach-head. "What if the others come in?"
Beach-head looks at her with a most sincere look on his face. "The hell with them." he said.
He placed her hands on his shoulders and with his hands on her waist, helped her to stand up. With his foot, he shoved the wheelchair away from her. Then, he turned back to look at her. Her eyes had the look of someone very scared. "Don't be afraid, Joanna. I will not let you fall. Now I'm going to take a step back and you'll have to follow me or you will fall."
"Ok, I trust you. But I’m scared, Beach,” she replied.
"It is natural to be scared, but you need to move your left leg or your right leg as I will be moving my legs back soon." Beach said, as he looked at her.
“All right,” she replied, she slowly moved her right leg and then tried to do her left leg only to start to fall but like he said Beach caught her before she struck the floor. He told her to move her leg again, even though she had partially fallen - he was not going to let her fall all the way down. She could feel her legs burning with the effort of standing after ten minutes of standing.
“Oh my gosh I’m walking!” she exclaimed happily.
"Not exactly, Joanna. I am helping you stay up on your feet and I think this session is at an end. We'll do another round in another ten minutes," he said, as he lifted her up into his arms and carried her back to her wheelchair.
"Thank you for helping me walk again,”
"Save it till you are able to walk without me holding you up," he said in a gruff voice. "Are your legs burning still?"
"Just a little,"
“Ok lets take fifteen and we will start again,”
Joanna watched him as he went to the coffee pot and poured a cup into his cup. He turned and asked, “Do you take cream or sugar in your coffee?”
“Black and three sugar cubes if you have cubes but teaspoons if possible,” Joanna said, as she wheeled herself over to the coffee pot.
Beach turned towards her and offered the cup to her.
Joanna took the cup of coffee and sipped it. “Very good coffee thanks. So tell me what your friend from college was like?”
“He was always trying to do things that he used to do before he got paralyzed. He lived life to the fullest and he just enjoyed life in all ways possible. If he has answered the e-mail yet, we’ll find out how he is doing?” Beach-head said.
Joanna turned to her computer and opened her e-mail account to find a new e-mail in her inbox. It was the guy she e-mailed. She read it aloud, “My favorite memory from college was getting laid by all the college girls, just joking. Really my favorite memory from college was my best friend Beach-head; he gave me the best day possible. He strapped me to himself and walked around campus with me. It was like that I was walking again.”
Joanna smiled. “You are so sweet, they were wrong about you. You aren't the heartless man they say you are. And we found your friend, you can reply to him and give him your e-mail address so you two can talk or arrange a face to face meeting with him,”
“Ok that would be great,” Beach said, as he moved her laptop around and typed a message to him, giving him his e-mail address and asked if he wanted to meet up somewhere sometime.
“Thank you Beach I appreciate it. Ready to help me walk again?”
“Okay, let me send this and then we’ll start again,” Beach said, as he finished off sending the e-mail and logging her out of her e-mail account and turning off her computer.

It was late afternoon, when Joanna and her father were preparing to leave the base. Beach helped her into the van that waited for them. Beach said, as he buckled the wheelchair into place. “I'll see you tomorrow?”
Joanna smiled as she nodded. Beach-head turned and walked out of the van and saluted the General before watching the van drive away.
Duke glanced over to Beach and saw his eyes had a look in them that was odd. “What’s wrong, Beach?”
“Nothing, Duke, just helping Joanna out and she helped me find Barry,” said Beach, as he turned away from him and walking away with a spring in his step.
Duke looked at Beach with a new light. “I do not believe this,” he whispered.
“What?” asked Scarlett, looking at him.
“Joanna got Beach to smile and look at his walk, it has a spring to it,” he whispered.
Stay tuned, the next one is coming.
