Chapter 4- Alliance.
Kimi stuffed a couple of books into her locker and grabbed the one she needed for her next class.
She cast furtive glances left and right. was it her imagination or were people giving her funny looks. She also thought she saw a couple of people whispering and pointing at her. She was being paranoid. Her friends promised not to say anything, Angelica was also sworn to silence under threat of Suzy's wrath.
"Speak of the devil." She muttered to herself as she slammed her locker door shut. Suzy was walking down the hallway toward her. Kimi smiled and waved eagerly. Suzy gave a little nod of acknowledgement but didn't smile wave or speak, in fact the nod itself was only slight. Suzy carried on down the corridor toward her drama class. Kimi took a deep breath and walked off in the opposite direction, slowly rubbing her throat where a lump was forming. She was getting quite good at holding back tears.
She sat in her science class, not really listening to what the teacher was saying. She jotted down notes on the few words she managed to pick up. But mostly she just doodled on the side of the page. Flowers, hearts and K 4 S and several small weeping eyes.
Her grades had been on a slow but steady decline in the two weeks since she had told everyone she was gay. She was still getting decent marks, but not as good as they had been.
She was happy when the lunch bell rang and she was free, at least for the next hour, of trying to pretend that paying attention in class was still a priority.
She picked at her lunch without really having much of an appetite. Two shadows fell across her table, Phil and Lill sat down opposite her. Kimi looked at them and smiled, but both her head and the grin dropped a second later.
"You ok?" Asked Lill. Kimi nodded, but none of them believed it.
"I guess." She said glumly. The twins couldn't miss and noticed her mood and Phil decided to press the subject.
"What's wrong?" Three girls walked past their table, looking at Kimi intensely for a couple of seconds and went off giggling to themselves.
"That's 'what's wrong'." She said. "Did you two tell anyone?" They both shook their heads.
"Never. We promised to keep it secret and we will." Said Phil. "Personally I got no problem with it. But have you seen our mother? You can't grow up with her and not just accept this kind of thing." Lill nodded in agreement.
"I thought you were very brave. And it is the 21st century. You not as out of place as you think you are." Kimi nodded, but still felt down.
"You...seen anything of Tommy lately?" Lill shook her head, but Phil nodded grimly.
"He's angry with you about something, but he won't say what. At first I thought he had a problem with your…" He glanced around the room to make sure no one was eavesdropping. "Lifestyle choice. Moms words not mine." He added noticing the look on Lills face. "He says that's not really what the problem is. I don't know what's up, but I couldn't get a clear sentence out of him when I tried to talk to him about it."
"I would have thought he'd be ok with it, he's very open minded. But then he acts like that and now I don't think I know him as well as I thought I did." Kimi shook her head.
"Don't blame him for anything." She said climbing from her seat. "whatever's bothering him, its my fault." She moved off, abandoning her lunch. "All my fault." She muttered.
Tommy sat outside, Chuckie at his side. Tommy was trying to eat his brown bag lunch and talk about everything but Kimi. Chuckie was happy to oblige. He'd had enough talking about it at home.
Despite their brave face, his parents hadn't taken Kimi's coming out lightly. They were still trying to stand by their daughter and support her decision, but their dislike of her choice was hard to hide. they said they were fine with her decision, but even Kimi could tell that they would preferred it if she'd used the evening to show off her new boyfriend than come out of the closet. Chuckie had to play man in the middle for both of them, counselling Kimi like the way a big brother is supposed to while also listening to the endless talks between his father and mother, mostly discussing where they thought they had failed as parents, but there had also been the embarrassing talk where they tried to find out if Chuckie was gay.
As far as his job as a big brother and son was concerned, he considered himself working overtime trying to both stop his mother show she was comfortable with Kimi being gay and play matchmaker with the daughter of a friend and stop his father making a complete moron of himself by playing matchmaker with the good looking sons of a few people he knew; hoping to lust the gayness out of her.
"This new script I got worked out is great." Tommy's voice Jerked Chuckie out of his daydream. "I just have the last few pages to write up and I'll be ready to start shooting." Chuckie nodded and smiled.
"Got any ideas who's going to play what?" He asked curiously.
He didn't get an answer at that moment Kimi rounded the corner and the second Tommy caught sight of her he got to his feet and walked away. Chuckie prepared to follow but stayed back to talk with his sister.
"I don't know what it is between you two. but you've got to find a way to sort it out soon." He told her bluntly. She nodded in agreement.
"I want to, but I've got to get him to stay in the same room as me for more than three seconds." Chuckie nodded and looked at the empty space Tommy had walked through seconds before.
"I'll try and get him to talk to you. But it's not easy, he always talks really loudly about something else when I try and mention you. I've got to go. See you at home." He took off after Tommy and Kimi sat down on a bench feeling alone. Which is what she'd wanted, it was why she'd walked away from Phil and Lill. At the same time, she wished she could be around her friends, but it had to be all of her friends or nothing.
A gang of girls walked by her and she recognised Angelica's voice.
"I mean, I couldn't believe it. But it's true, they're gay."
Kimi froze, it was totally obvious who Angelica was talking about. She jumped to her feet and grabbed the girl by her blonde hair and dragged her backwards.
"What the hell do you think your doing Angelica?" She screamed at her. The girls who had been listening to Angelica's conversation had stopped to stare at this, not knowing what to do they just decided to wait and see what happened.
Angelica slapped Kimi and pushed her away. hot, angry tears were forming in Kimi's eyes.
"You promised you wouldn't tell anyone." She half sobbed half yelled. Angelica regained a cold composure and stared hard at Kimi.
"I never promised that I wouldn't tell people about Matthew Harris being gay."
Kimi stopped crying as confusion swept over her.
"What?" She asked. Angelica sighed and turned to their audience.
"I'll catch up with you." Grudgingly they broke away and walked off, leaving Angelica with Kimi.
"What were you talking about Angelica?" Kimi asked, her anger returning.
"Matthew Harris, a boy about your age admitted he was gay in front of half the cafeteria yesterday.
"People were just chatting and when your dorky brother walked past he said something like 'That Chuckie has a nice ass.' I don't even think he knew he was saying out loud."
Kimi finally understood why people were whispering about her in the halls, why she was getting the stealthy glances and even why the girls in the cafeteria laughed at her. It wasn't because they knew she was gay, it was because her own brother was the object of Matthews affections.
Matthew Harris? The name called up the image of a boy with brown hair who sat two rows behind her and one row to the left in her History class. Beyond that, Kimi didn't know anything else.
"He ran off embarrassed and I'm just catching a few people up." Continued Angelica. "Wait until everyone hears about this. It's almost as good as telling the truth about you." She unconsciously rubbed at the spot on her head where Suzy had pulled her to the floor and threatened Angelica with pain if she said anything about Kimi being gay.
"I see." Said Kimi apologetically. "Sorry." Angelica scowled.
"Do that again and I'll put your confession on the school notice board." She threatened. The tone of her voice told Kimi that the threat was an empty one, the wrath of Suzy was something to be feared, but Angelica had an image to uphold.
Angelica stormed off to look for her friends and Kimi fell back onto the bench. So there was someone else in the school that was gay. At the very least it would take some attention away from her. But maybe she could also help him, she did kind of know what he was going through, sort of. Maybe she could be a shoulder for him to cry on. First problem; where to find him.
Kimi thought about where she would want to go if people found out about her. It would have to be somewhere out of the way; where people rarely visited. Somewhere secret; where she or very few people knew about. Somewhere small; large places were too obvious as hiding places. And somewhere safe; which could be locked, or was usually locked but she could find a way in.
Even in a busy place like school there were still about half a dozen places like that where a person could hide. An empty classroom, a store cupboard, toilet cubicles where the best bet, small, safe, private but a little too public, if you were crying you had to shut up when you heard someone enter the room, which was not easy when you were in full sob. Kimi could think of only one place where she could go that fit all the demands for a person who wanted to hide.
The auditorium was empty. Kimi wasn't surprised since everyone else was at lunch. But the stage was set, people would be coming to rehearse the latest school play, Robin Hood, after lunch. She knew she didn't have long to look. Kimi walked as slowly and silently as she could through the rows of chairs. She kept her eyes constantly on the stage. Unlit, the cardboard bushes and trees looked a little spooky.
Standing directly in front of the stage Kimi got to her knees and in seconds found what she was looking for.
The stage had a trapdoor, which could be opened by a lever backstage and was used when the play asked for a mysterious disappearance. The actor would step behind a fake rock or tree, the trapdoor would be opened and they would jump down and push it closed and wait to be let out later. What many people didn't know was that there was a secret panel built into the front of the stage, it was locked from the other side by a simple latch; an emergency exit in case the trapdoor broke and the actor or actress couldn't get out. It couldn't be opened from the outside, there was nothing to lift the latch with. You had to slid a piece of thick paper, or thin card through the seam between the door and doorframe and gently ease the latch upward.
Kimi took some paper from her notebook and gently eased it through the almost unseen gap. She carefully eased it upward and felt it snag the latch. The latch was released and the door swung open on squeaking hinges. Inside Kimi heard sniffing and scurrying of something large enough to be a person.
Kimi climbed inside of the small crawl space and closed the door. Her eyes saw nothing in the total blackness.
"I know you're here. No point trying to hide." She called to the darkness. Kimi could here breathing in the far corner, someone was trying to be quiet but was still too emotional to be so. "I know your there. Matthew."
She blinked as a small light bulb flickered to life. It was a dim and yellow light, but enough to illuminate the crawlspace. Matthew sat by the light switch, his clothes and face were dirty. Tears were in his eyes, but he had not started crying yet. He sniffed and wiped his nose, the dusty crawlspace was getting to his sinuses.
"Who are you?" He asked quietly. Kimi stayed by the locked door, just in case he tried to make a run for it if she left the exit un-barricaded.
"I'm Kimi Finster, I sit near you in history class." He looked at her thoughtfully for a second, then nodded his head as he recalled the Japanese/American girl who sat several rows ahead.
"What are you doing here?" He demanded. Kimi looked around the crawlspace innocently.
"I come here when I want to be alone. What about you?"
He was not fooled, she knew that by the look on his face.
"What are you really doing here?" He demanded, louder. Kimi sighed and decided to crawl closer. Not caring about the dust ruining her clothes she made her way over and sat in front of him.
"I heard a rumour from a friend of mine that, you're gay."
"It's not true. I don't care what they say it's not true. I'm not. You got that I'm not." He yelled so loud that dust fell down from the wooden ceiling inches above their heads and made both he and Kimi sneeze for several minutes.
After their sneezing fits had subsided Kimi spoke before he could open his mouth.
"Than why do you hide?" She asked delicately. He stared at the floor in an uncomfortable silence. Kimi took it upon herself to try and keep the conversation going.
"I wouldn't mind if you were. I've got no problem with it." She said feebly.
"Everyone else will." He muttered quietly. Kimi almost didn't hear him.
"What was that?" She asked. He looked up at her, a couple of tears rolled down his cheeks.
"What's going to happen when everyone else finds out? I'll be slaughtered that's what. Every bully in the school is going to come after me. No one will want to talk to me because they wouldn't want to be seen with the gay boy."
"So you are gay?" She asked tentatively. He nodded his head and wiped his eyes, spreading dirt across his face.
"Yes." He confirmed.
"So am I." She whispered, just loud enough to be heard. He stared at her in silence, but the look on his face suggested he didn't think she was telling the truth.
"Don't tell anyone." She begged. "I'm not ready for people to know. Just like your not ready either." They both fell into an uneasy silence and Kimi realised that this conversation wasn't going as well as she'd hoped.
A sudden idea dawned on Kimi. An idea that was so ludicrous, that it just might work.
"What if; people don't believe the story's that are being spread around." She said slowly, as if just thinking out loud.
"Why wouldn't they? It's not like they have a reason to not believe it."
Kimi sighed and edged closer.
"What if I was your girlfriend?" She asked.
"But, your gay." He stated obviously. Kimi sat back and nodded.
"So are you. That's the perfection of the plan. People won't think your gay because you have a girlfriend and people won't think I'm gay because I have a boyfriend. We just have the occasional coffee together, exchange those cheep cards on Valentines Day and that's it. Nothing will happen because we're not interested in each other. Call it an honorary title."
He stared at her suspiciously.
"How do I know you won't just keep up appearances for a few weeks, then tell everyone the truth?" He asked.
"How do I know you won't do the same? It's a mutual trust. You don't say anything, I don't say anything." She said truthfully.
There were sudden loud sounds above them, the acting group must've come to rehearse the play. Kimi smiled at Matthew slyly.
"Well? what do you say?" She asked in a whisper. Matthew looked up at the wooden ceiling, which was the bottom of the stage, footsteps thumped around, making dust fall on their heads.
"Alright, lets do it." He whispered back. Kimi nodded and banged on the ceiling twice with her fist. The footsteps above stopped and muffled voices started up. Kimi thumped twice more, for good measure.
"What are you doing?" Matthew whispered in a panicked voice. Kimi jumped onto him and hurriedly wrapped his arms around her.
"The best performance, needs the best entrance." He had just enough time to realise what she meant when she thrust her head forward and the two of them locked lips.
The trapdoor dropped open and a teacher dropped down into the crawlspace. Three pupils also stuck their heads down and peered at the two kissing kids, their hands roving all over each others bodies. Their eyes were closed and their breathing was heavy. The teacher coughed loudly and they broke apart in an embarrassed frenzy. The teacher glared at them.
"Come one you two. Out."
He climbed out of the hole with Kimi and Matthew close behind. They stood embarrassed in front of him on the stage, surrounded by the entire cast of the school play. Kimi notice a few people whispering and giving them odd looks. It was working, whatever story had been spread about Matthew was already being disbelieved.
"Care to explain yourselves?" Asked the teacher. He looked at the two pupils, they were dirty, and flushed, it was obvious what they had been doing.
"Sorry sir." Sad Matthew. "I was just having a private chat with my girlfriend, and one thing led to another."
"You two are going to the principals office right now. It'll be a miracle if your parents don't hear about this."
Kimi had to fight back a smile as she was led off the stage. They had done it, they had successfully managed to fool everyone into thinking they were a couple. She glanced left and looked at everyone's confused, amused and smiling faces. She looked to her right and she no longer needed to hold back her smile, it faded away as she caught sight of Suzy. Dressed as Maid Marion, slowly shaking her head, and looking both angry and disappointed. Kimi kept her eyes down to the floor for the rest of the journey, no longer feeling that this was such a good idea.
