Chapter Four: Never Be Strong Enough
Chance tilted his head glancing at book titles. He was one of his more favorite book stores. It was a nice warm day out, so he was wearing black cargo cuff off shorts with a dark blue T-shirt that said: ‘Trust Me’ on the front in white letters. He already had a stack of five books tucked under his left arm.
"Name dear?" he heard the store owner ask.
"Clawson," A she kat said. " Storm Clawson."
Chance felt the books slip out from under his arm. One rather heavy one hit him his left foot. He bit back the curse he wanted to say so badly. He picked the books up, deciding that five was enough to buy for the day.
He made his way to the owner’s desk, where she had a simple cash machine to ring up orders. In front of him was a she kat with hair that reached just shy of the back of her knees. It’s color seemed to be a odd mix of several shades of purple and black. The she kat had it up in a ponytail halfway up her head.
"You’re references are wonderful," the owner said. "You like reading?"
"Heh," the she kat said. "I practically lived in libraries growing up."
‘That voice!’ Chance thought.
"Alright then," the owner said. "you’re hired. Now if you can ring up my favorite customer up. I’m sure you can use this old machine pretty well."
The old she kat came from behind the desk and the she kat with the long ponytail took her place. Chance’s mouth went dry, recognizing Storm/Turmoil looking over the old cash machine. She looked up at him and smiled, showing bright white teeth. She was wearing a dark pink long sleeved fitted shirt and loose low rise ratty jeans and sandals.
"Welcome to Hannah’s Treasures," She said. "Find everything you needed?"
He had to find his voice again, "Yes."
His eyes went to the familiar scar on the her neck as she took the books from him.
"He gets a twenty percent discount," the old she kat said.
Storm/Turmoil pressed the button for it as she added up the purchase.
"Okay if I did this right," She said. "It’s thirty dollars even."
The old she kat smiled, "Correct. Now introduce yourself dear."
"Hi, I’m Storm Clawson, And you are?" Storm asked.
"Chance Furlong," Chance said. "You wouldn’t happen to know a Jacob ‘Jake’ Clawson would you?"
Storm raised an eyebrow, "Why?"
"He works with me. Oddly enough we had just been talking about his little sister four weeks ago," he said.
Storm put a paw to her mouth, "You better not be shitting me."
"I’m not," Chance said. "If you trust me you I can show you where we work so you can see him."
He then gave her the cash for it and she deposited it into the old machine.
"Go ahead," the old she kat said. "I’m about to close soon."
"Alright," Storm said.
She came from behind the counter and followed Chance outside. The walk out to the parking lot was quiet. Chance looked back at Storm, who had his books propped in her arms as she walked.
"I’m guessing you’ve new to Mega kat City," he said.
She gave a half shrug, "I’ve been here for awhile. Just in the hospital for a few weeks. So this is kinda my first time out in the city."
"So it’s safe to assume you didn’t drive here either," he said.
"Yes," She admitted. "I took the bus here."
He went over to his old mustang, "Well, get in."
She looked nervous for a moment, then got in on the passenger’s side. She then put the books in on the back seat and closed her door. He then got in himself and started the car up, shutting the door as he drove off. She chewed her thumbnail as he drove the short distance between the shop and the salvage yard.
"You always pick up she kats at the bookstore?" She asked.
He briefly glanced at her, "Can’t say I’ve tried that one. This’s a first."
She smirked, "You’re good looking, so I’m going to assume it doesn’t take much for you. You’ve gotta be fighting the girls off with a broom, or maybe a bat."
He chuckled at the last part of her comment.
"I’ve discovered a bat works best," he said.
She smiled and they pulled into the Salvage Yard’s back parking lot. Once he shut the engine off she got out and stretched her arms above her head. He then got out and pocketed his keys, making sure he got the books from the back seat.
"I’ve been told about this place," Storm said. "A few months back a friend of mine said this place would be a good job for me."
Chance watched her as she walked towards the back door to the Office. They found Jake at the desk, he looked deep in conversation with someone on the cordless phone.
Chance was thankful to see that Jake had found a way to ‘hide’ his wings. Even if it meant Jake had to wrap his chest in the wings. (There was enough joints in the wings so he could do this comfortably.)
"Um.." Storm mumbled glancing back at Chance.
Jake hadn’t noticed them yet, since his back was to them. Storm stood there a few feet behind him with her paws in her pockets. Chance glanced at his watch, wondering how much longer the call was going to be.
What felt like ten minutes later, Jake finally hung up the phone.
"Hey Jake," Chance said. "I have someone you might want to meet."
Jake groaned and rubbed the bridge of his nose, "I’m tired and not really in the mood for games right now."
Storm bit her lower lip lightly, " Hey Jacob."
Jake sat up very straight in his chair for a moment and took in a sharp breath.
"Storm?" he asked.
Tears started to snake down Storm’s cheeks.
"Yeah," She said.
Jake then got up from the desk and watched his little sister for a moment or two.
Then without any warning, he tightly hugged her to him while she buried her face in his neck. He then held her at arm’s length.
"You used to be taller then me," he noticed.
"I got into a accident," she said. "So I lost some of my height when they repaired the damage to my legs."
"I was just about to give up looking for you," Jake said.
"I’ve been sort of lost these last few years. I really can’t remember what’s happened these last eight years," She said.
Chance felt himself biting his tongue. He knew exactly where she’s been these last few years. And he was sure she knew exactly what she had been doing those years.
"You have any plans tonight?" Jake asked.
"None," She said. "Maybe we should go for some food and catch up?"
"Exactly," Jake said. "That sounds perfect."
Chance watched Storm feeling a familiar ache in his chest.
"Want to come with Chance?" Jake asked.
"Wha?" Chance asked, realizing he had zoned out.
"Come have pizza with us," Jake said.
"I think I’ll pass this time," Chance said. "You two haven’t seen each other for years. Catch up with each other."
Storm gave a slight nod, "Okay."
"Next time then. Just let me get changed and we can go," Jake said.
"I’ll stay here while you do," She said.
He then let her go and made his way back to his room. Chance leaned against the desk while Storm took a interest in her nails.
"I would like you to go out for dinner with me sometime," She said looking up at him.
Chance raised an eyebrow, "Oh?"
"If you wouldn’t mind," She said. "I noticed you and I have the same taste in books."
He felt a smile come to his lips before he could stop it.
"Alright," he said.
Jake then came back into the room, now wearing a black button up shirt and dark blue cargo pants. Chance could see his wings shift under the shirt. He then wondered how Jake was going to break ‘that’ news to his little sister.
"I’ll be back later Chance," Jake said.
"I’ll be here," Chance said.
Jake offered his arm to Storm and she hooked her arm with his. They then exited and Storm glanced back at Chance. He returned her look.
