Once they entered the academy campus, there were two things that most struck the Ghostbusters and their wives. First was that Futura was a well respected professor, and even professors who were older than she was met her with an air of reverence.
Second was that this reverence to her paled immensely in comparison with the reverenceh whh which they themselves were met. Students, faculty, and staff alike all stopped short in whatever they were doing as they walked past. Many pointed, some women screamed, a few even fainted. Peter grinned each time this happened, and Winston muttered to Ray that he was finally living out his rock star fantasy.
Egon walked over to Futura to speak to her, “Futura, I really must protest. I don’t think it’s wise for you to be showing us so much of our future. This is a part of our destiny, and you may be altering it by doing so.”
“Nonsense, Egon. My showing you all this is a part of your destiny.”
“I don’t see how that can be.”
“Well, would you have even considered founding a school before I told you that you would?”
“No.”
“And will you now that I have told you?”
“Well, of course but . . .”
“See?” she said with a grin. “Time travel has made history circular. The academy allowed me to travel back in time to tell you you’d found the academy, and your founding this academy made possible the training of scientists who would invent the Time Turbo. Circular.” She made a blue flaming circle in the air with her fingers.
“There is the possibility that our meddling in other time periods may bring about the end of creation,” he objected.
“If that were the case, we wouldn’t still be here,” she replied sagely. “All time travel is well monitored and only a select few are allowed to do it. I am the only one in this galaxy with this privilege. In fact, I don’t even need the Time Hopper to do it anymore. I think that’s why I’m given so much respect around this place.” She shrugged.
“I still think this has the potential for some hefty costs.”
“It’s cool, Egon. We’ve been active participants in the whole circular history thing she’s talking about,” Eddie interjected.
“Oh?”
“Sure,” Jake added. “When we were first starting out, Prime Evil took our fathers captive, thinking that we were too green t abl able to save them or stop him. Well, we ended up traveling through time to do just that. That’s how we met Futura and our wizard friend Fuddy. During our exploits in medieval England, Fuddy borrowed Excalibur from King Arthur without asking, but Arthur was very forgiving about it and even loaned it to us to aid in our quest because we helped free his kingdom from Sir Trancelot. Anyway, long story short, we ended up in the prehistoric age, and we accidentally got Excalibur lodged in a big stone, and we couldn’t pull it out to return to Arthur, so we just left it there.”
“You . . . you mean . . . ?” Janine mumbled in amazement.
“Yup, we basically returned it to him after all,” Eddie said with a proud grin.
“To be honest, I think not having Excalibur is probably what would eventually cause him to lose his life to Mordred,” Jake added. “We were really tempted to tell him about his future, but Merlin told us not to. He already knew Arthur’s destiny, and he said Arthur would think that stopping Prime’s plan was more important in the grand scheme of things. Besides, if the legend is accurate, Morgan le Faye used her magic to send him to Avalon, so he’s not even dead. But anyway you can see where our traveling back was a part of his fate. History really is circular, just like Futura said.”
“Wow!” Ray exclaimed. “You never told us you met Arthur Pendragon!”
“Yup. We can take you back to meet him when we get back if you like. Fuddy and Merlin too.”
Egon rubbed his chin thoughtfully for a while, pondering everything they’d said. Finally, he looked at Futura and smiled. “Okay. I’m convinced. Lead on.”
She smiled and continued with the campus tour. “Trust me, this mission was well documented. It was, after all, the reason you even thought of founding this school in the first place. And the source was one whose credibility is unquestionable.”
“Documented?” Ray asked. “By whom?”
“By the oldest and wisest professor.” Futura said this with a touch of awe in her voice.
“And who might that be?” Winston asked.
Futura smirked at him, but did not answer. “Rest assured that he told me himself about this. He told me that I would go back to pas past, what date in your time I would go to, and that I would send you back the same day. He just didn’t know what date in our time I would bring you to. But I knew. I knew from the very first day I entered the academy, and I was ordered not to tell him when or even that I knew.”
“I don’t get it,” Janine interrupted. “Ordered by whom? Who could know more than this oldest, wisest professor about this mission? And why did you need us? Only two of us wives are even qualified to be Ghostbusters.”
“Oh, I beg to differ, Janine. Jessica was going on missions before even you were,” Futura replied. “And you were all very competent with that Susan B. Anthony case a few years back.”
Janine blushed and smiled. She tried not to laugh, but it wasn’t easy. The guys were still embarrassed to that day. It was really their true most un-shining moment, especially with the ensuing headlines, but the wives knew better than to tease the men about that around the campfire in front of the kids. “Okay. But you still haven’t answered my question about who ordered you to keep this a secret. And if this professor is so wise, why doesn’t he know more?”
Futura shook her head. “I can’t tell you yet. It will all be revealed in due time. Just trust me. And the professor may not know what the mission is about, but he has told me on numerous occasions that he has carried the knowledge for centuries that this is to be your most important mission ever.”
They all stopped short and stared at her in disbelief. A professor who was centuries old? It was hard to believe. Egon started to open his mouth to protest, but then again he thought about how they’d traveled through time to get there and ghosts were real, so who was he to be a doubting Thomas. He decided to keep his comments to himself, so the others also followed suit.
After relaxing and just letting Futura give them the grand tour, the Ghostbusters realized that the campus was really beautiful. And to their surprise, there were very old buildings named after all of them. There was a Spengler Institute of Scientific Investigation, and a Stantz Occult Library. The men’s dorm was called Venkman Hall, and the women’s dorm was called Melnitz Hall. There was a Zeddemore Recreation Center, Kong Administration Building, Spenser Campus Store, and Tracey Institute of Technology, or T.I.T. for short.
Ray said to Alice, “I see now how you must have felt sitting down for coffee in the Derleth Student Union at Miskatonic University.”
Alice nodded her head, but didn’t look at her husband when she responded. “Yeah, but I think I feel it more here.” She pointed to a building in front of them. It was the Derleth School of Sorcery Science, named not for her great-grandfather like at Miskatonic University, but for herself. Futura told them that she was the dean of the Derleth School and Morrow was the dean of T.I.T. and offered to take them in for a visit, to which they happily agreed.
“Heh. That spells . . .” Peter mumbled to Ray.
“Settle down, Beavis,” Janine interjected, quick to thwart one of his tasteless jokes, as usual.
Inside the T.I.T. building, the group found Morrow working in the biotechnology department. He was sitting in a chair in front of a Plexiglas pen with a baby gorilla nestled in his arms, drinking from a bottle.
“Welcome!” he said excitedly. “I knew you’d be here today, so I rushed my project to be ready when you arrived.”
“What are you working on, Morrow?” Jake asked, giving the little gorilla a tickle on the foot. It squirmed in Morrow’s embrace and gripped Jake’s finger with its toes.
“I’ve been trying to breed super-intelligent apes. Ones that have rudimentary speech and high technical learning abilities. He’ll also have super strength when he grows up, won’t lit little fellow?” Morrow stroked his head again and the little ape snuggled into Morrow’s chest as he continued to drink from his bottle.
“Really?” Egon asked. “How did you accomplish this?”
“Cloning mostly. I introduced select human genes into the ape genome until I came up with this little guy. I also toyed with the genes that control his muscle development for the strength.” He stroked the baby primate’s head lovingly as he finished his meal and burped.
“Well, that’s really fascinating, Morrow, but why apes?” Ray asked.
“Isn’t it obvious? Surely you Ghostbusters can recognize one of your own.” He held up the baby gorilla, who was fighting sleep and sucking on Morrow’s thumb.
Jessica’s eyes suddenly grew wide and she welled up. “Morrow? Is that . . . I mean, is he who I think he is?”
Morrow smiled and handed him gently to her. “Say hi, Tracey.”
Jessica started to cry and nestled the little ape to her chest. Jake and E’s e’s eyes were shining as well. They passed the little ape between them. Morrow and Futura watched with unguarded joy at their friend’s happiness at seeing the late ape again and she finally hugged her brother. “Good work, Morrow.”
He shrugged and took the infant gorilla and laid him in his pen. “After he gets his shots, we’ll deliver him to the past. Your fathers will be given a pet gorilla for Christmas when they’re thirteen. He’ll grow up to be a great inventor. The dematerializer will be his legacy, along with this school of technology.”
“Oh Morrow, I can’t believe this is real!” Kayla said, and then cooed over Baby Tracey.
“Time is circular. Remember that. Oh, and Egon?”
“Yes?”
“You’re my idol. It’s been a dream come true meeting you.”
Egon’s face got red, but he shook Morrow’s hand heartily and smiled in embarrassment.
“Well, we’re gonna let you get back to work, Morrow,” his little sister interjected. “I know you’ve still got some important work to do in the zoological technology division.”
“Sure do,” he replied with a grin. “I’ve got some talking bats to breed. Especially one with a super sonic vocal blast.” He winked at Jake and Eddie as he walked them all to the door.
