Chapter 36
Katara placed her hands on the door and felt the flow of the water. She made note of where it twisted, started and stopped. The design was genius. Each channel of the door had small bubbles to let in air to keep the water moving. So long as water was in the channel it would remain locked. She extended her hands and drew the water out directing it to the dragons carved into the frame. The doors opened in response.
“I did it,” she said in awe.
Katara walked into the room. The riches in Zuko’s vault were nothing compared to this. There were jewels, accessories, clothing, statues and shoes in both Water Tribe and Fire Nation fashion. Everything was beyond exquisite.
“It’s all yours, Katara,” Zuko said walking behind her and speaking quietly in her ear.
“Zuko, I can’t accept this,” She said shaking her head emphatically. “It’s too much. It belongs to your people.”
“No, Katara, as my concubine and the one who opened the doors it belongs to you,” Zuko insisted.
Tiny alarms went off in the throne room and the Fire Lord’s room when the vaults were opened. Ozai had recognized the doors to the main vaults being opened and then Zuko’s personal alarms. He dismissed his councilors when a second unfamiliar one went off and hurried to the vaults. Ozai arrived to hear Zuko giving the Waterbender all of his great-grandmother’s treasures. To his surprise she was refusing them.
“Don’t be silly child. Great-Grandmother Kesuk would have wanted you to have them. You are a part of the Fire Nation now. You are the first concubine of my son, Crown Prince Zuko and you are Water Tribe. They are yours. You may also have whatever is in Great-Great-Grandmother Nini’s vault as well,” Ozai said duly impressed with the girl.
His son really had made a good choice. Every Waterbender they’d captured for the past 100 years had been brought to the palace to try and open the doors. Even with the promise of freedom hanging other their heads, they’d been unable to do so; before that it had been traders and merchants promised a percentage of the wealth who’d failed to meet the challenge.
She had done it then refused the riches they offered. Most women would have carted off half of the treasures by now. In typical noblewoman fashion Mai would have emptied both vaults and would be asking for more.
“Zuko, have a servant fetch a scribe. We need to add this to the historical registers,” Ozai commanded gleefully. This was only getting better. Once it became known that the Avatar’s Waterbender, now Prince Zuko’s Waterbender, was owner of two of the most legendary vaults in the Fire Nation storehouse she would be considered a gold-digging traitorous whore. The rebel faction would be splintered. She would never be trusted again.
Zuko quickly tracked down a servant and asked them to fetch a scribe. He returned to see the doors of Fire Lady Nini’s vault open. Kesuk’s vault looked like a garbage dump compared to hers. Fire Lord Kozulon owed his very throne to his mother. Nini had been the one to raise him after he’d been rejected by his father and the one who helped him gather the support he needed to usurp his brother.
She ferried his armies from the outlying islands to the capital city so he could murder every member of his family on what would have been his younger legitimate brother’s coronation and seize the throne for himself. The Ursa was docked in the hidden cove she used. There was gold, ivory, two full sets of dragon bones both of which were fully gilded, and artwork from the Fire Nation’s most prominent historical artists. The amount of jewelry was staggering. Zuko would not have been surprised if the actual value of the contents surpassed that of his and his father’s vault.
Katara stepped forward when she saw the book sitting on the podium. It was a history of the Water Tribes, a relic rumored to have been lost. She turned and bowed to Ozai, “Fire Lord Ozai, may I please have this book?”
Ozai snorted, the room was filled with riches he’d never imagined and she’d only asked for a history book. He lost his patience and yelled at her, “Rise, foolish girl. All that is in this room is yours. You do not have to ask me for any of it.”
“But these items belong to your people. I can’t take them!” Katara stammered.
Ozai looked at her hand, “Zuko perform the signet exchange. Maybe that will stop her protest.”
Zuko’s eyes widened, normally the signet exchange was a private act between the royal and the woman he wished to appoint. His father had already witnessed them consummating the relationship and had added Katara’s name to the historical register of royal concubines, now he wished to view the signet exchange. At this rate Katara would be his Fire Lady by the end of the week.
“Come here, Katara, place this ring in my mouth. When I open my mouth and present the ring, put this finger in it,” Zuko said extending his hand to her and indicating the finger on which the ring fit.
Katara nodded. Zuko held her right hand as she used the left do as he asked. When she placed her finger in his mouth he closed his lips around it. He used them and his tongue to adjust the ring on her finger before sucking and licking the digit. He withdrew his mouth slowly then evaporated the lingering spit with his breath.
Zuko licked his lips, “Stand still, Katara. You have to give me my ring next.”
Zuko was grateful that Katara was wearing one of the dresses that he purchased. It was calf length with a split. He knelt down and reached beneath it and pulled off her underpants. He really had to send Mine something nice to thank her for making those type of gifts.
Katara jumped when Zuko sat between her knees and pushed his face between her skirts, “Widen your stance then be still Katara. It is a sign of trust that we do this.”
She whimpered but complied. The ring was in Zuko’s mouth. Zuko’s mouth was between her legs. She was being licked. The soreness and stinging she felt slipped her mind as Zuko’s tongue worked its way between her folds making her slick. It was absolutely mind boggling that Zuko was licking between her legs and putting a ring in her vagina. She clenched around his fingers as his mouth slid upward and closed over her pleasure button while his hand slid inside her to claim the ring. Katara’s knees buckled and she gasped in pleasure as he wiggled his fingers a few times to secure the ring.
The ring exchange was a success Zuko thought holding her upright as he withdrew from beneath her skirt. He kissed her stomach, both breasts, finally her lips. “You are mine Katara, I will be the only man to breach your body. My tongue will be the only one to taste your phoenix.”
“Tell me that your hand will be the only one that feeds me and I will be the only man to know your flesh,” Zuko moaned against her lips.
She repeated it and Zuko kissed her again. This time their tongues mingled with more force and passion. He broke the kiss and stared at her with half lidded eyes, “You are my royal concubine, Katara formerly of the Southern Water Tribe. You are mine, I will protect you with my strength, my honor and my fire in exchange you will give me mental and physical comfort and children if my father allows. You are now Katara of the Fire Nation, concubine of Crown Prince Zuko, son of Fire Lord Ozai and Princess Ursa who is no longer with us. ”
Katara squirmed in his embrace. Those sounded eerily like the matrimonial vows; filled with trepidation she asked, “Zuko, did we just get married?”
He stiffened. Before he could respond his father laughed reminding the teens of his presence, “Nonsense, you haven’t signed any marriage documents have you?”
“Well no, I don’t think so,” Katara said shaking her head.
“You didn’t. Trust me at this point I would not let you. But you are now an official royal concubine Katara of the Fire Nation. The items in honored grandmothers Kesuk’s and Fire Lady Nini’s vaults are now officially yours. You may do with them as you wish,” Ozai said knowing she wouldn’t do anything worse than remove a few trinkets.
The Fire Lord added, “I do suggest speaking with the head scribe about preserving the book. Sometimes they can deteriorate with exposure. Zuko, go fetch them and do not forget the two of you have your sitting with the court artist today. The ship leaves at sunset. Zuko make sure she selects something appropriate for the portrait and your journey.”
Zuko nodded and practically ran down the hall away from his father. He placed his hand over his chest when he was halfway there and leaned against the wall to regain his composure. He’d always suspected Azula’s ability to lie was an inherited trait but for his father to say something of that magnitude without flinching was mind blowing.
