Shego looked down at the navigation systems of the black helicopter for the second time since she’d hit the Tri-City area, confirming she was just a minute or two away from the subdivision Kim’s house was in. Flipping a series of switches on one of the control panels, Shego engaged the chopper’s “whisper mode” and then grimaced slightly as she felt the sudden sluggishness in the controls resulting from it. Still, better that than the alternative of waking up everyone in the neighborhood when she landed.
Looking back into the rear compartment briefly, Shego felt a faint smile curling her lips at the sight of Kim fast asleep on the back seat, curled up under her bomber jacket. A second later she realized what she was doing and shook her head sharply, her features twisting in annoyance while thinking; Jesus! What the fuck are you doing? Yeah, ok, so you like Possible, great, but fuck! It’s only been a day! Get a fucking grip! You’re not some twelve-year old schoolgirl with her first crush here or something! Christ!
Shaking her head again, Shego reduced her speed a little, then twisted in her seat so she could reach across her body and over her right shoulder with her left hand, lime-green energy springing up across her fingers as she flicked them at Kim, sending a barrage of pencil-sized energy bolts streaking towards the girl while loudly declaring; “Rise and shine Kimmie; you’re almost home!”
Between the near-shout and a quartet of impacts on her thigh that felt like someone had thrown a bunch of erasers at her fairly hard, Kim came awake all but instantly, pushing herself off the seat in a half sitting position while Shego’s coat fell from her shoulders. Looking up and blinking, Kim’s bleary eyes focused as she mumbled; “Hunh? Wha’?” A second later she tensed and sat up even more, shouting; “Shego! What are yo—”
Kim cut off suddenly as the adrenalin spike and a little pain from her cracked rib cleared the sleep from her mind, and after blinking some more, she blushed slightly and dropped her embarrassed gaze now that she remembered everything that was going on.
Up in the front seat, Shego smirked and laughed, responding; “Ye-a-ha, good thing I didn’t take you up on that no-tell motel offer there Kimmie. Last thing I need is a punch in the face for an alarm clock.”
Kim blushed even more and stammered; “Ummm, yeah… sorry about that… took me a second… reflex, y’know?”
Shego just snorted and chuckled some more, shaking her head slightly while reducing the speed of the helicopter to a relative crawl now that she could see the shadowy form of Kim’s house off in the distance. Behind her, Kim spoke up once more.
“So we’re almost back to Middleton I take it?” Kim sat up as she asked the question, sliding her legs off the seat and holding Shego’s jacket so it didn’t fall on the floor.
“Yeah, coming up on your house now.” Shego responded.
“What?” Kim leaned forward, nearly coming out of her seat. “Shego, you can’t fly me straight to my house! You’ll wake up everyone in the neighborhood! Not to mention my parents!”
“Do you hear anything back there Miss Observationally Challenged?” Shego countered dryly.
“Hunh? What?” Kim trailed off as she realized that it really was unbelievably quiet in the aircraft’s cabin now—even more so than it had been before. If it wasn’t for the slight wavering sensation and the vibrations from the engine running through the seat and floor, Kim wasn’t sure she would have been able to tell if they were still in the air or not.
Almost blushing again, Kim said; “Oh. Ahhh, stealth-mode I assume?”
“Right in one! Give the girl a prize!” Shego quipped.
Looking to change the subject, Kim responded; “Well, I was actually able to get some sleep back here. This has to be the most comfortable helicopter I’ve ever been in.”
“Yeah well, you can thank Blue Boy and his girly constitution for that.” Shego said while putting the chopper into a hover for a second, gauging Kim’s driveway in preparation for landing. “He couldn’t stomach long trips in a regular helicopter—like, literally; he got airsick from them—so, he put inertial dampers in these things just to give them a smoother feeling ride.”
Kim gave a soft laugh in response to that, and a few moments later she could see the front of her house seeming to rise up out of the darkness before them as Shego set the helicopter down, only the merest of judders and a settling sensation announcing when Shego touched down in the driveway with consummate skill.
As Shego shut the engines down, Kim stood up and then hunched over in order to reach into the cockpit so she could lay Shego’s bomber jacket on the copilot’s seat. After that she lifted the suitcases on the right-hand side of the cabin onto the seats to clear a path to the door. Before she could open it however, Shego turned and said; “Hang on a minute.”
Kim paused, looking back, and Shego continued; “Gimme your phone.”
“Why do you want my phone?” Kim asked.
“To run up a bunch of long-distance charges. Now gimme the damn phone…” Shego growled.
With a muted scowl, Kim dug her phone out and handed it to Shego. After flipping it open and looking at it for a few moments, Shego worked the controls dexterously with the same hand she was holding it with, only using her thumb. She quickly input a number and stored it before starting to hand the phone back to Kim, only to pause, a smirk on her face as she instead went into a flurry of button presses, scrolling through multiple options before finally finishing nearly two minutes later.
“There you go Kimmie.” Shego said with a satisfied grin once she finally handed the phone back to Kim.
Kim took her phone back and looked at it to find a new number added to her list under the initials S.G., complete with a custom ring tone for it no less. A moment later Kim raised an eyebrow and looked at Shego, saying; “Ahhh, Shego? This phone number has an extra six numbers at the start of it.”
“Don’t worry Kimmie, it’ll work just fine, trust me. Those are just routing numbers so your network can find whatever one I happen to be using at the time.”
“Using ‘at the time’?” Kim emphasized, her eyebrow still raised.
“You think using a normal cell phone is very conductive to my not being found by everyone that’s after me? Mine’s unchipped and cycles through networks every time I use it, accessing them with the identification codes of prepaid SIM cards I buy every so often. Which, by the way, is so there’s no suspicious activity on the networks when I’m using them, like there’d be if I was piggybacking or hacking them instead.”
Kim snorted softly at Shego’s unspoken “not because I think I should pay for it or anything,” shaking her head gently and smiling as she closed her phone and put it away. A moment later both women exited the helicopter, and shortly thereafter Kim found herself carrying two of the lighter suitcases to her front door while Shego lugged along the two heavier ones and the last remaining lighter one right behind her.
Kim set her bags down on the porch and dug out the keys to her house, only to pause and look at Shego, who still hadn’t set down her load yet. After a few moments of Kim looking at her, Shego whispered; “Well? Are you just going to stand there staring at me all night, or are you going to open the door already?”
“You can’t just waltz into my house Shego, what if someone sees you?” Kim responded just as quietly.
Shego gave her head a quick shake and shot Kim a dirty look.
“I’m one of the best thieves in the world Kimmie; I think I can manage to step into your damn foyer and set down some suitcases without waking the neighborhood, now open the fucking door.”
Kim hesitated a moment more, then turned and opened the front door—more because she feared getting into an argument with Shego in front of her house than anything else. As soon as Kim moved out of her way, Shego eased past her as quiet as a mouse, stepping into the front hall and setting all three suitcases down with barely a sound.
Kim followed Shego inside a moment later, after picking up her two bags again, and the dark-haired woman moved aside so she could set them down beside the others. As she did, Shego grinned and stepped forward, a pale figure in shadow as she reached out and goosed Kim while she was bent over.
It took everything Kim had to choke down her shriek of surprise, and the instant she regained control she whirled on Shego, glaring daggers and hissing; “Shego!”
Shego just smirked and murmured; “Turnabout is fair play Princess. Now we’re even.”
Shego turned and glided out the door, making no more noise than the specter she resembled, leaving Kim to stare wrathfully at her retreating figure. A moment later Kim ground her teeth together so hard the muscles in her jaw stood out and she grimaced while venting a hollow sub-vocal roar of outrage. Shaking her head sharply afterwards, Kim followed Shego out into the night, quietly closing the door behind her as she went.
Once outside, Kim caught up to Shego just as she reached the helicopter and furiously whispered; “What the hell was that for?”
“A little object lesson Kimmie.” Shego responded calmly, though her eyes had a fierce hardness to them stronger than Kim’s. “I don’t mind being your dirty little secret if that’s how you want to play it on your end, but if you think you can treat me like it, you’re sadly mistaken, because I will give you back every ounce of attitude you give me one way or another.”
Shocked, Kim gaped at Shego as she stood there with her arms crossed beneath her breasts, and struggled to respond; “What are you talking about?”
“Oh, like you don’t know? I heard what you were really saying back there Kimmie; what you really meant. That you don’t want your family knowing anything about us—whatever the hell ‘us’ is. And that’s fine, but I will not accept you expecting me to behave as if I were dog shit on your shoes, understand? I’ll play nice as long as you appreciate the fact that I’m doing you a favor—because I am—but I won’t let you try and make this about me when it’s all you. I don’t need any of that bullshit thank you very much.”
At Shego’s words, Kim felt a wave of shame and guilt rise up inside her and crest over her anger, drowning it out nearly completely. For the first time since this night began, Kim finally became aware of just how different pursuing a relationship with Shego was going to be compared to what she had—had had?—with Corscan. There were so many things she took for granted with Corscan because of the way she lived her life and what she believed in, along with how she usually acted as a guide for Kim, letting her come to her own decisions instead of trying to assert anything on her. Shego… Shego was unlikely to stand around idly waiting to be asked her opinion on something if she had something to say about it, and she wasn’t the type to put up with being taken for granted in any way either—at least, not without giving you a hard time, which Kim already knew from the way Shego treated Drakken at times.
Looking down at the ground, Kim spoke in a soft, apologetic voice as she responded; “I’m sorry Shego. You’re right, I wasn’t thinking about you when I said that.” Kim looked up, seeking Shego’s eyes with her regretful gaze. “It’s just that I haven’t had to think about anything like that before, and I’m still afraid about how my parents would take all of this if they knew. And you’ve got to admit that explaining why they saw me with you is going to be next to impossible unless we’re fighting at the time, right?”
Shego quirked a half-smile, uncrossing her arms as she answered; “It’s ok Pumpkin; I understand. But, like I said, I won’t put up with you giving me attitude over it, ok? I’ll help you keep your secret, but you treat me like it’s something I should know I’m obligated to do for you, you’ll get more than you bargained for, got it?”
Kim smiled back hesitantly, saying; “All right Shego, I’ll try to be a little more considerate.”
Shego broke into a full-blown smirk as she responded; “Oh, you don’t have to if you don’t want to Kimmie; I’m fine with just giving you flack over it—I’m a big girl after all. But if you don’t want that flack, well…”
Kim shook her head gently, smiling in earnest now. “You know you’re crazy, right?”
“Hey, what can I say? I gotta be me.” Shego grinned.
Kim laughed softly, and a moment later Shego stepped in close to her. Before Kim knew what was happening, Shego slipped her right hand behind Kim’s neck, tilting her head up slightly, and pulled her in tight with her left arm around the small of Kim’s back, claiming her lips in the sudden tempest of a deep, zealous kiss. Kim responded instinctively to Shego’s hungry mouth, matching it move for move almost immediately, but by the time her mind caught up and she was just starting to enjoy it consciously, Shego broke away and turned, heading to the door to the helicopter.
“G’night Princess.” Shego grinned as she looked at Kim while opening the door. “I’ll call you tomorrow after school if I don’t hear from you sooner.”
Kim shook her head as she watched Shego climb into the helicopter, slightly flustered, and then stepped back until she was clear of the rotor as Shego began powering up the aircraft. Kim gave Shego a little wave goodbye as the rotor got up to speed, the wind from it whipping her jacket and hair around as she did, and Shego waved back just before taking off, the eerily silent black helicopter quickly becoming nothing more than a dark, starless spot moving against the night sky high above.
Meanwhile, unnoticed by the two women as they made their goodbyes, Jim and Tim eased back from the window blinds of their room and took off their night-vision goggles.
“No way! Kim’s totally gay for Shego?” Jim whispered in amazement.
“I thought she was dating her boss…” Tim whispered back in a puzzled tone.
“Yeah, me too. Well, maybe they broke up. Or maybe we were wrong?” Jim responded.
“Or maybe she’s seeing both of them.” Tim countered.
“What? You really think Kim could do that?” Jim asked with honest skepticism.
“More than us being wrong about something, yeah.” Tim grinned with his boastful statement.
“Well, any way you look at it—” Jim broke off with a sleepy yawn before continuing. “This is probably going to make our job harder.”
“Not necessarily.” Tim responded while climbing into bed. “I mean, it’s not like Kim’s going to be any less secretive about dating Shego, right?”
“Yeah,” Jim answered, crawling into his own bed, “but I don’t think Shego’s going to be as easy to deal with as her boss.”
“Good point.” Tim conceded before yawning himself. “Well, one good thing at least; now we know for sure that our airspace monitoring system works.”
“Hoo-shaa.” Jim answered in a soft, smug voice before both brothers drifted off to sleep.
